Alexis Winston has been obsessed with famous race car driver Seth Keller ever since her older brother became best friends with him. After her parents pass away, Seth’s father becomes her legal guardian, and Seth begins referring to her as “kid sister.”
But when she returns home from college a grown woman, she becomes determined to prove to him that she is definitely not a “kid,” and the spark that ignites between them is anything but sisterly. Now they must battle her brother, her guardian, and his fiancé, all under the watchful eyes of the media as they fight to hang onto each other.
Adley Maddox has lived all over the United States with her husband and two daughters. She loves spending time with her family, snuggling her little pups, and consuming books voraciously. When she isn’t working and trying to give her girls all the time and attention they demand, she continues to write her character’s stories in the hopes of sharing them with her readers.
I didn't like the weakness of Lexi at first. However, she showed everyone that she was stronger then they had thought. Sure she had a rough childhood. She lost her parents at an early age. Grew up in a house of men. She spent time at the race track. The men in her life her brother, guardian and his son always protected her and wanted the best for her. What they didn't know the best was with them. This also gives you a better insight to what goes on at the track. Good read.
Kimberly Montague’s first novel, Racing Outside the Line: A Love Story at 190mph is a romance centered around the racing world and focussing on central character Alexis’ love for Seth, whose father has been her and her brother’s guardian since her parents died. The novel focuses on not just the beginning of the relationship but what follows and covers an extended period of time in order to fully establish the characters and their connections These family relationships and their impact on Alexis and Seth’s romance are a focus of the novel, as is the scrutiny and judgment of others, and it is this broad range of interconnected themes which, for me, makes this novel more interesting than a conventional romance.
Alexis, who narrates the novel, is not perfect; she is at times selfish, manipulative and childish, and it is often these flaws which cause her many of the problems she has to overcome. It is these flaws though which make Alexis an interesting and appealing character and which got me involved in the plot of the novel. Montague’s writing engaged me in her character’s emotions, which are well described and believable, although the dialogue is at times less so. As with many first novels any flaws in the beginning are far overshadowed by the end of the novel, where Montague’s writing becomes natural, original and enjoyable.
Montague’s husband races and her familiarity with this world allows her to explain the interesting parts in just enough detail that it doesn’t bore those with little knowledge of or interest in racing like myself. This focus also adds interest to the novel as Alexis must reacquaint herself with the racing world, and those for whom it is a living, if her romance with Seth is to have any hope. Romance is not a genre I usually read but the engaging characters, interesting focus and broader focus on relationships outside of the main couple’s romance helped me to really enjoy Racing Outside the Line: A Love Story at 190mph.
I got this book because I enjoyed Altered. Although I gave them same score, Altered was way better! You may ask why did not give it a 4 or 5, I reserve 4's and 5 for the books that I read over at least 3 times... if that happens in the future I will update my score. As it turns out I have re read this book on numerous occasions so it's now a four
But the story of Seth and Lexie was compelling! However I did have some serious problems with the story that I will discuss further in my spoiler section. In summary I found Lexie a bit too dramatic and Seth did something that I would have a hard time forgiving, with out some serious grovelling and suffering. What bothered me the most is has action did not seem to match his character, especially as you read further into the story and realize how much they had been through.
Good fun light read! hope you enjoy but I wont be rereading this book .........this is not the first time I have been wrong about a book

I have to start by saying I really liked Kimberly Montague's Accidental Texting. I believe Racing Outside the Lines was her first book but I recommend you don't start with it. I picked it up because I liked Accidental Texting so much and I only finished it out of sheer stubbornness. I found it immature, overwrought, filled with unsafe sex and, oddly, filled with the kind of sex scenes you see on tv - all build up and then the good stuff happens off camera. Finally, the editing was so-so.
Part of what bothered me about this story is that Lexie (h) equated sex with love in their first encounter and she's still doing it despite very mixed messages from Seth (H). Since the rekindling of their relationship happens while he's still engaged, I found her attachment odd - and the lack of references to his fiancee troubling. I'm the first person to admit that romance novels are escapist and inherently unrealistic (in most, not all, cases) but wouldn't a sane woman be more hesitant? It's as if Ms. Montague pulls out the fiancee card when she remembers it instead of weaving it in throughout the story.
I liked the idea of the plot and liked some of the characters but felt the execution could use some refining and editing.
Incredible Love Story! Any fans for Beautiful Disaster should jump on a board for this truly amazing romance. I was so completely overwhelmed by this story, and was hopelessly captivated from the start. This is one of those loves that you would lay down and die for. Seth and Alexis are amazing characters, and perfectly matched to offer a romance that is perfect in every possible way imaginable. Kimberly Montague starts off with a sucker punch that will knock you off your feet. She quickly follows this up by building such an incredible and life long romance that will overcome you as the story progresses. Racing Outside the Line is solely based on this romance; everything gravitates around Seth and Alexis, and their life long powerful and romantic story. This is a BOOKWHISPERER RECOMMENDATION, and a new addition to BOOKWHISPERER FAVORITES.
A falls in love with brothers best friend book. Liked the chemistry between the two main charcters, Seth and Lex as well as the side characters Desmond and Chelsea. Most of the book I really liked until about two thirds in when it felt like a longgg epilogue, I understand the need for closure on some issues but it could have all been cut short. Overall a great read and worth a read.
This was a super sweet older brothers best friend romance novel. It was so much more then that but that was one of the main catalysts in this story and the author did a good job with it. Seth and Lexie. I loved the communication that they had. They had this way of opening up to wash other and I have to say that it was one of my favorite parts of the whole story. Add in passion that they held for each other, great secondary characters, the book was for he most part a winner. I do feel like some things didn’t give me enough closure and that the ending felt really rushed, but other then that I really enjoyed it. Personally, I also wish it would have been in duel POV so we could see what Seth was feeling but that didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the back. 4 stars #2OCCJD

The world of racing is not a private world. Auto racing is one of the countries national pastimes, it is very public, and rumors abound. Growing up in the racing industry would certainly be exciting, yet television and news is an avid reminder that everyone is in the spotlight, and secrets do not last long in the business. Romances are hot and breakups are cold, and most are reported in vivid detail.
In Racing Outside the Line, Kimberly Montague has given us a story of love and romance set in and around the racing industry. Well written, her knowledge of the industry and her characters seem to fit the classic characterization of those we often watch on Television or hear about on the news. From the time her parent’s death, all Alexis (Lexie) and her brother Desmond know is the love and caring of Wyatt Keller, her father’s best friend and their guardian. His son Seth also lives with them and they are frequently in and out of the racing circuit. Her brother Desmond goes into the business as a publicist, and Seth becomes one of the top drivers. In fact, Desmond is Seth’s publicist and keeps him out of trouble and in good standing with the communications industry. Racing fans are often fickle and it is important to maintain a certain image. That was Desmond’s job. For as long as Lexie can remember, she has been in love with Seth. To him she is just a kid. Not only a child, but his annoying kid sister. The difference in their ages seems insurmountable to Lexie at her young age, but as time moves on the spread no longer seems to matter. Seth is not as immune as he pretends. As he hand her off to her date for the senior prom, he struggles with his feeling, she is so beautiful and grown up. Her prom attire brings out her beauty, and Seth has mixed feelings. When Lexie leaves the after-prom party early, and calls for Seth to pick her up, she is angry. Her date whom she really does like, wants to be her first sexual partner, but she can only think of Seth. Knowing he is unreachable, she is angry with herself, but also at him for being there. As he tries to calm her down, one thing leads to another and they find themselves in bed together. To Lexie, she is in heaven; this is what she always envisioned. And Seth really cares for her. Life is suddenly everything she had ever expected.
Waking in the morning, she finds Seth has gone. She goes into a deep depression and loses herself much as she did after the death of her parents. To help keep sane, she goes through her College acceptance letters and finds the College furthest from where Seth lives. She will have to remake her world and rebuild her confidence in order to survive. Watching Seth’s career will be the only view she will have of him. Can she survive without him in her life? He is still a part of her extended family; will her heartbreak keep her from the rest of her family as well?
This is a fun and yet intricate story of love. Sadness and depression permeate parts of the story, and Lexie must lean on others to grow and regain her confidence. She struggles through the years trying to turn each of her conquests into Seth. No one seems to be able to live up to her expectations. She does not realize she is making this contrast, and yet it is apparent to all those who know and love her. I found myself a bit disturbed by her character. First, she has so much depression and low self-esteem, and then recoups with a strong backbone and high esteem. Yet as she encounters more vicissitudes again with Seth, she seems to lose her equilibrium and again sinks into a depression. It seems like such a manic-depressive state, and yet she is again an entirely different person at the end. Having grown through the years, she seemed to gain more control and not rely so much on others to know who she is.
Seth is very much aware of himself, and surrounded by beautiful women. Used to being fawned upon he only realizes how much he loves Lexie when it is too late for him. Now, engaged to be married, it is only when he sees Lexie again; he understands his reaction to women. He begins to understand why he has never been able to follow through on his commitments. Can life be fair, and allow them to finally be with the one they love.
This is a fun love story, full of bits and pieces of depression and bitterness. Yet it is also full of love and yearning, family ties, and a love that lasts a lifetime. Sexual tension is high and there are some vivid love scenes. If you enjoy romance, this is the book for you. It is steamy and sensual, with a heartwarming tale of deep and abiding love.
This book was received as a free download from the author. All opinions are my own based off my reading and understanding of the material.
Rev your engines and take this baby out for a spin! Kimberly Montague's debut novel RACING OUTSIDE THE LINE takes the checkered flag. Well written and teeming with interesting, believable characters, Ms Montague makes her reader feel like they are listening to a new friend tell her "how we met" story!
At 17 years old, Alexis Winston has had to deal with more tragedy than most people three times her age. She lost her mother to cancer, and then a few years later, she lost her father in a car accident. All that remains as constants in her life are her over-protective brother Desmond, guardian Wyatt Keller and the object of her affection, Seth Keller.
Lexie has been in love with Seth forever. She learned how to work on cars just for another excuse to be close to him. But Seth, who is 4 years older that Lexie, doesn't even know she exits, or so she thinks. The night of her senior prom changes everything for Lexie. After losing her virginity to Seth, she wakes up the next morning and he is gone. Devastated and humiliated, Lexie falls into a deep depression and decides to go to college as far away from home as she can get.
Fast forward four years, Lexie is preparing to graduate and return home. This Lexie is a strong, confident woman who no longer worships the ground Seth walks on. Seth calls her, and with some help from her sorority sisters and a little liquid courage, she returns his call only to discover he's engaged! More determined than ever to get on with her life, Lexie returns home and starts to date other men, but she knows deep in her heart that she will always love Seth.
This story is told from only one character's POV, which I don't normally like but worked for this story. The author brought me so far into this story that I felt myself remembering my own first broken heart.
Lexie is a flawed character, who creates a lot of the angst and drama for herself, but the love that she feels for Seth is so apparent and deep that you can't help but root for her. Seth made me want to scream: "be a man and fight for what you want" for most of the story. Her brother and guardian, while trying to be helpful, just add to her heartache and create more drama. Lord help her from the well-meaning men in her life. Thank God for her best friend who pulls her out of the initial depression and gives her some tough love later.
It is apparent that the author is familiar with the behind the scenes, of the racing world and that adds some reality to the story line. With great story telling, strong romantic leads and interesting secondary characters, I can't wait to strap in and go along for the next ride in this series. Amusing and fast-paced for certain, Racing Outside the Line is an enjoyable romance story.
There were times where some typos got in the way of the scene, but they were easily overlooked overall. Another pass over by an editor wouldn't go astray.
I am not a car buff, nor will I ever be, so I was quite happy when Kimberly didn't go into too much detail about the cars and the racing. It was enough to satisfy my interests in the topic, providing enough filler to make the characters real and three dimensional, while not too much so as to cover up the real reason we want to read the story... steamy, sexy Seth! I loved Seth... maybe it was the bad-ass racing boy that got to me?
I will admit, that at times I wanted to smack Lexie... she got a little too frustrating towards the end of the book with all her emotional baggage. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand why she was going through it, but I felt we got to see just a little too much, which made her become a bit annoying at times.
I LOVED Gene! I wish we'd got to see some more of him... perhaps a side story about Gene?
I quite like the cover art, though Seth is better looking than the guy on the cover in my mind :)
The sexy side of this story was both sweet/romantic and sexy/steamy. I liked that we got to see both sides of the couple, not just the sweet and gentle side, but the crazy out of control side too.
This book had everything! A super sad love story, hope, devotion, soul mates, drama, humor.
Lexie, Seth, Desmond, Gene, Wyatt and Chelsea are amazing characters. Some of the most down to earth, real writing and background that I have ever seen come together in a story. I adored each and every one of the main characters and loved the interaction between them all. The realness of the racing industry and other details only added fuel to the already burning fire of reality in this book.
I sat back and rooted for Seth and Lexie and cried during Lexie's heartbreak and laughed during her amazing strength of character and amazingly deep soulful love of Seth.
I'm not usually a big fan of romance books but this one captured my heart. I'd LOVE to see this book be turned into a movie and can hardly wait to read the next addition in the Love Story at 190 mph series. I understand there to be a total of four books and next one is Lexie's brother Desmonds story!!!
Great job, Kimberly Montague. I can't wait to read more from you!
It is a romantic, fun read. Ok...I wud say sickeningly sweet.....toothache is sure :)!! I loved Ms. Montague's Accidental Texting: Finding Love despite the Spotlight and I wanted to try her other books, so this one and also, I love race-car heroes....so obviously I had to read this! And I enjoyed reading Racing outside the Line. One thing I love about the author is her books always has the sweetest, romantic hero, so soft-hearted, you will just melt...!! I don't want much into the storyline but, Alexis and Seth were enjoyable characters and I liked it!
The summary looked so exciting, original and fun, while it actually was not. It was kind of boring, couldn't keep my attention. I've read the entire book but still don't feel like I know the main characters. Only in the last 10 pages has racing some kind of importance, but that's all.
I had alot to say about this book, and none of it was good, but ROL was so boring even my comments slipped my mind. I expected better of Montague. The only reason I gave it 2stars is because (in the summary) I really liked te plot, though that is kind of unfair.
So, I'm sort of a closet NASCAR fan. I love my tatted up rockers and my bad boys of romance, but there is something about a man that drives a fast car too!
This wasn't as much of a racing story as it was a great love story. The best part of the racing scene that was highlighted were the parts women would appreciate, like those catty driver's wives/girlfriends.
I was so blown away with the depth of this love and storyline. Just a wonderful book. I'm an official fan of Montague and will buy every last thing she writes, period.
I really liked this book. I was craving a racetrack themed romance novel after reading the Racing on the Edge series by Shey Stahl and I was not disappointed. Alexis Winston was a typical sorority girl, however, and a lot of relationship building was incredibly cheesy and predictable, but I couldn't help but enjoy it. What happened to the sequel, we were left with a bit of a cliff hanger?
To make this short, Lex (the main character) is a helpless female who lets her emotions get the best of her most of the time. She depends on other people to help her get out of her funk. She's the other woman/third party in this story, yet she talked about not being able to trust the guy. Well, isn't that ironic?
Really not impressed. Contrary to Accidently Texting, this book didn t drew me in at all. I thought the idea interesting in the beginning and decided to give it a shot but was really disappointed. I felt like there were no really story building no deep development. It was just so so sadly.
This book was an enjoyable read I agree in part with some of the negative comments but still enjoyed it. The female was a bit winy in parts but did reprieve by the end of the book. I like the strong friend character I guess that is where the writer will take the next book.
Such a great story. Love the characters from beginning to end. Seth is yummy. Can't wait for book 2 of series. Kimberly does a great job keep the reader wanting more.
