I work at a public library. I noticed these books when shelving one day. I read it on the spot. I called my 2 granddaughters when I got off that evening, and told them about the (My weird school) books. We all have kindle's, so we decided to read the books together. After they got into the books, we had to read every night. We talk, then read, we all enjoy our reading time together. Our time is full of laugh's. I highly recommend these books, if any parent has a young child who doesn't like reading, try these books. They may turn your non reader into a reader for life!!!

A. J. hates school and vegetables until a strange lunch lady from France comes to his school and begins to change things.

The adults at A. J.'s school are all a little bit wacky which might appeal to young readers, especially young boys.

Maybe in the next read?

The book Ms. Lagrange Is Strange is about AJ and his friends meeting the new weird lunch lady and AJ eating his vegetables. In the beginning of the book Mrs. Mcgillicuddy, the old lunch lady came out her office to tell the kids to be quiet but when she slipped on a puddle of apple juice spilled by AJ. When she got up she started saying “ I can take it anymore I quit!” She took of her Apron and her gloves and left the room. But AJ and the gang were worried that the lunch lady quit. The next morning Mr.Klutz told them that their new lunch lady would be Ms. Lagrange. When it was lunch time everybody was excited .When AJ’s class walked in the lights were dimmed .There were tablecloths on the table. AJ’s class got in line to eat lunch. AJ was not happy because the food looked the same as before. The lunch lady tried to get AJ to try her French carrots and peas but AJ refused to so she squirted him with a water bottle. When AJ got home he received an invitation to Andrea’s party. AJ’s mom made him go. When AJ got there he was shocked to see Ms. Lagrange in the kitchen . Ms. Lagrange made escargot . AJ did not see Emily next to the trash. He threw a snail at the trash can and it landed in Emily’s hair. She let out a cry for help. Then she tripped and landed on the table. All the tea got on her dress. The next day at school Andrea came to AJ and said that he ruined her party. They went back and forth. Then Andrea took Ryan’s spaghetti and dumped it on his head. AJ threw macaroni and cheese at her. Before you knew it there was a food fight. You won’t believe who walked in the vomitorium Mrs. Ella Mentry .She looked around then joined the food fight. She said this is the best fun she had in her life. The End

Well let's start with AJ who hate's school and vegetable, why was it so hard for him to eat one pea. I understand AJ not likeing vegetable because it's hard for me too, but come on one pea that's not hard. Why do they call their cafeteria the vomitorium that's gross, I wouldn't want to eat in there. When Ms.LaGrange came she decorated the vomitorium to look like a fancy resturant, with tables cloth, fake candles and the lights turned down low like they do in France where she's from. I think that was a cool idea, it was something different. Now the food had to have the word french in front of each word like french sloppy joe sandwiches, french salisbury steak, french chili suprise and french tuna casserole. Even though it made the food sound really good to eat, but in the mash potatoes she had the letters Y-A-W-Y-E spelled out which means you are what you eat. And why do AJ and his freinds always think that when some one replaces a teacher in the school, that the real teacher is locked up down in the basement of the school, but this time the real lunch lady is locked in the freezer. So they went snooping and got locked in the freezer and you know who saved them Ms. LaGrange. She wasn't to strange she just do things in a different way, but what about the food fight, we had those in my old elementary school but we would get into trouble. In AJ's school when Ella Mentry came to visit the school, she's the person the school is named after she joined in with the food fight and dumped some pudding on Mr Klutz head, that was funny. Bonjour is a new word I learned form Ms LaGrange it means hello.

The Weird School series is a seemingly never-ending saga of kids enduring elementary school life that gets odder and odder...in ways I personally find profound...but then I WAS the guy who in my senior year did a book report on the original English translation of Bambi AND graduated with honors BECAUSE of that damn deer! I'm proud of that, sure, but I may never live that down! In the series, AJ shares, I think, my gritted-teeth response to the BS of school education. He hates school with a passion worthy of a James Dean, the Rebel minus the Cause, yet certainly AJ has no cause to hate girls who (admittedly!) are smarter than himself--IE: EVERY GIRL!!! Included in his personal vendetta is Andrea, the 8-year-young Stephen Hawking AJ would LOVE to "hawk" spit at! Today, though, he once again finds himself out-classed IN CLASS! This time, it's the new cafeteria lunch lady...scuse me, mademoiselle, since Ms. LaGrange is a French Chef...scuse me, THE French Chef (not from PBS but she is French so let's show some respect!). Ms. LaGrange wants AJ to TRYYYY some of her cuisine art, s'il vous plait? (As in: see, boo, the plate? Eat your peas like le good booooy!) AJ, though, won't take his pea! (Except in the men's room. TAKE HIS PEE, wink wink?) Can the gentle reversive therapy of the Weird School curriculum break down his defenses (again, as it has been attempted 7 other times! The brat is more resistant than I thought!) and bring him outside le comfort zone? If a redone version of John Lennon's Give PEAS a Chance don't work, NOTHIN WILL!!! Good adition to the epic adventure. Bon Appetit!

I have to say that this is the sort of book I turn my nose up at. My nearly 7 year old daughter had some friends reading the series at school. From what she related to me it seems that the book is full of "funniness" - the kind that is right up elementary school boy alleys. For example sticking carrots up ones nose and then later eating them. We had a great discussion about how these sorts of books are good "palette cleansers" of sorts. Something fun and frivolous between more engaging books. Books that can make your mom squirm just knowing you have it under your covers with a flashlight at night! I love playing into the fact that she think I consider this completely taboo and she feels she is getting away with something great. No amazing piece of literature - but a good fun read.

Kid approved!

We started reading the books in the My Weird School series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot together during storytime, but our oldest started reading ahead into the series on her own and our youngest seemed to lose interest. So now, I am just reading to catch up with our oldest.

This story features a strange lunch lady, French food, a birthday tea party, and a food fight. It's a short and funny book and our oldest and I had a few laughs talking about the plot. We enjoy these stories and have put the next few books in the series on hold at our local library.

This easy chapter book is part of the "My Weird School" series. Like most good series, it provided a bit of background at the beginning of the story and throughout the story so that the reader was not lost. This book is the type of book for anyone who might not like school or might find many of the things that the grown-ups at school do to be strange. There is a little bit of mystery -- who is Ms. LaGrange and where did she come from, but it is quickly solved. Black-and-white illustrations are provided throughout to keep the reader engaged. The main character is a boy - A.J., but the story also included his two (male) friends and two girls in his class. This seems like a good suggestion for reluctant boy readers who need the predictability of a series to keep them reading.

This is Book #8 in The Weird School Series and it is my second favorite, right after Miss Daisy is Crazy (#1). In this book we meet the new lunch lady, Ms. La Grange, who is French and really encourages the students to try new foods and make healthy choices. But the book is far from "preachy". The reader will try to solve the mystery of the writing in the mashed potatoes (YAWYE) and they will also enjoy the "B plot". The School was named many years ago for a former teacher and now the students are preparing for a visit from her.
There are many unexpected incidents in this story that will keep the reader laughing and reading until the very end.

A.J. and Andrea cause a little mishap in the lunchroom, AKA the vomitorium, which causes the school lunch lady to quit. The new lunch lady, Ms. LaGrange is French and very strange. She tries to get A.J. to eat his vegetables.

Andreas mom makes her invite A.J. to her birthday party. A.J.'s mom makes him go.

Very funny 2nd grade book. I don't recommend you let 2nd graders read it as it may warp them for life.

After reading 7 of these books, I came into this book salivating for adult-level subversion. Indeed, the book sets the table for a critique of modern foodie culture as seen through the eyes of a child. It was ripe for plenty of French puns! But, alas, none of those expectations ever came to fruition.

Ensimmäiset osat tälle jaksoi vielä hymyillä, mutta mikäpä vitsi ei kuluisi käytössä. Helppoa helppolukuista vasta lukemaan oppineille kuitenkin. Hieman huumoria, kohtalaisesti kohellusta ja sitä rataa.

Another fun-filled adventure for the "My Weird School" gang by Dan Gutman. This time, the lunch lady has abandoned her job and a new lunch lady must be found. Ms. LaGrange takes the job and brings along her "French" cuisine and French accent.

I like this book because it was very funny. Spoiler Alert my favorite part was when Aj finds out that Ms. Lagrange was not a monster. I have no favorite character. I would recommend this book because there are mysteries to solve.
