Little Star lands in Penny Pasketti's backyard, and in a twinkle the night is filled with fun. Eventually, though, it is time for Little Star to go home. But how do you make a star fall up?
Nick Bland was born in the Yarra Valley of Australia, in 1973. He was the son of an artist and a primary school teacher, and spent his early years on the farm where his parents lived. At age six, he moved with his family to 'the bush'. He wanted to be a cartoonist and a writer from a very young age. In 1996, he took a job at a book store, and decided to write and illustrate children's books. His first book, "A Monster Wrote Me a Letter" was published in Australia in 2005. He currently lives in Darwin, Australia and works full time as an author illustrator.
LOVED! Definitely one for a bedtime story or a read-aloud to a group- peak in on the illustrations, and see if you notice anything (or anyone!) else out at night.....
Author/Illustrator: Nick Bland First published: 2010
Self taught Australian author/illustrator, Nick Bland's illustrations of acrylic paint on paper have a particularly mesmerizing use of light and everyday settings. The book draws the reader in creating a visually stunning book which appeals to older readers, just as the simplicity of the narrative appeals to younger.
"Twinkle" is beautifully illustrated in calming night scenes as Penny and her new friend, Little Star, find a way to send him home. It's lovely to have a young female protagonist, but Bland also tells us through the illustrations that other stars fell, and other children have similar adventures. A nice dreamy imaginative story with gorgeous attention to detail.
Purchased at Adelaide Writer's Week 2013 after we heard a talk by Bland. Daughter had read it at the school library and chose this out of all Bland's books as the one she wanted signed. It doesn't have the humour, colour, and cartoon quality of some of his other works, but this is the one she responded to.
Age (taking into account comprehension, concentration, language): Read aloud - 3+ Read yourself - 6+
I found this on a sale table and snapped it up for my son; we have Nick Bland's The Very Cranky Bear, which was (until now) my favourite children's book. Twinkle has ousted it. Bland's artwork is, as always, beautiful - I love the beautiful details. My son (who is three) and I have happily spent several minutes just looking at a single page. And the story is sweet too - a little girl finds a fallen star in her yard and helps him to go home. What the words don't capture but the pictures do is that it seems there must have been a shower of shooting stars, because there are a dozen other children in the background trying to do the same thing. I love it!
My favourite page reads, "Together they chased the quietness away and filled the night with giggle and bounce." Aww. :)
A great bedtime story. Brilliant illustrations which carry extra meaning not found in the text. Appreciated some of the humour as well. If the emotions carried through a little stronger, this would be very close to 5 stars for me.
Beautiful illustrations but I found it quite sad for a children's book - I interpreted it that the protagonist doesn't have any friends and is lonely (and so are all the other children at the tops of the buildings releasing the stars and in the neighbouring houses).
