For the last ten years, Ana has spent summers with her Gram. With nothing to do, the closest beach two hours away, and Gram, who Ana is convinced is crazy, always in her garden talking to things that aren't there, Ana is bored out of her mind.
One day, Ana sees strange colors floating around Gram as she works in her garden. Gram says they're fairies. She can "See" them, and there are others who can see things. Ana's a Seer, too.
When Gram gives Ana a book that explains about the many different creatures, like selkies, unicorns, vampires, and others, Ana gets curious. She is shocked when she comes across the entry about famous werewolf hunters - her parents.
Determined to learn where she fits in, Ana's summer gets a lot more exciting as she sets off to find out what she can "see." Only problem is, she's not sure what to do when she finally discovers the truth. And she's not sure she'll live to tell anyone.
Nicole Zoltack is a USA Today bestselling author who loves to write romances. Of course. She did marry her first kiss, after all!
When she’s not writing about knights, superheroes, or witches, she enjoys spending time with her loving husband, three energetic young boys, and precious baby girl. She enjoys riding horses (pretending they’re unicorns, of course!) and going to the PA Renaissance Faire dressed in garb. She’ll also read anything she can get her hands on. Her current favorite TV shows are The Walking Dead and Stranger Things.
This is a very quick read, at only around 17 pages it took me around 10 minutes to read. I think Seeing For The First Time definitely has potential and that the second book in this series could make for an interesting read, if a number of things are done. I think Ana definitely needs to be developed as in around 17 pages she definitely didn’t have time to become a proper character and be unique within herself. Because l didn’t really get enough time with her l don’t feel l can judge her character or any of the others in this book. Another thing is l still don’t understand is the ending (explained below, Spoiler) but like l said, l do feel this book has potential. I like that this book includes many creatures, something for everything. Also l think that because everyone can see different creatures, some good and some bad, then the second book could definitely be a good read which a lot of action in and gripping chapters. ______________________________________________________ **Spoiler** **Spoiler** **Spoiler** **Spoiler** **Spoiler** I didn't understand the ending. I don’t know if it’s just me but l have read over it twice and didn't understand if the man who got killed was Frank? _____________________________________________ This review is only a short one due to how short the book is.
'Seeing for the First Time' is a short story rooted in fantasy and supernatural lore. Author Nicole Soltack's unique take on the supernatural makes 'Seeing for the First Time' a worth-while, well written e-read.
As far as characters go, we don't meet many of them. I liked the character of 'Ana', although I would have liked to have learned more about her.
Storytelling-wise, 'Seeing for the First Time' was a pretty quick, action packed read. It wasn't too heavy in action'y bits or lengthy details. All in all, the quick plot was pretty solid.
Though quite short in length (under 20 pages), 'Seeing for the First Time' left me wondering, 'what's next'? Even though as a reader, I only got to see the wee beginnings of Ana's journey, I want to know what happens to her next. What will she do with her new found power? Will she meet any handsome seer's like herself (or even a reformed supernatural) and fall head over heels? Will her grandmother ever give up on her gardening enough to tell her more about this strange world that Ana now finds herself?
'Seeing for the First Time' is the first portion of a six part series. While I applaud the author on taking her own road in terms of self publishing, I would have loved if she'd, say, released all six parts as one novel, as opposed to separating it out. I would have loved a longer look into Soltack's world. 'Seeing for the First Time' gets 3 out of 5 stars.
As usual, I like to be very critical and technical with my reviews.
-I found at least three typos - one missing a letter, and two that just didn't make sense. -Punctuation issues are always present in books so that's a given. -"GRAM" was overused. It was in every sentence in the first page alone and three times on the first paragraph. -Grams didn't talk much like a Grandma. -I guess since it's a short story, the characters weren't as developed, but Ana just seemed so naive. I mean, really? Go to a seemingly abandoned house by herself, get out of the car in the middle of a dark forest by herself... Kind of unrealistic.
I love how the name "Arianna" was used in the story. :D This book apparently made it so that vampires cannot be seen by everyone but it was weird because vampires have human shells, so how can they be invisible to humans?
Overall, the story was interesting at best. I love how there were so many different creatures in the leather-bound book. Would have loved to explore that more :D
SEEING FOR THE FIRST TIME is the first of a series of 6 short stories titled What you see is what you get. It is an extremely fast read at just 17 pages. The characters definitely were likable and the story was catching. Ana is strong willed and didn't freak out completely and lose her head when she had all the reason to. I had an issue in the beginning, Ana goes from saying her Gram is completely crazy in one paragraph and just a couple paragraphs later she has completely accepted her Grams explanation of what they are and turns to being extremely excited about the information with no hesitation and it just seemed like a way to fast turn around for a teenager. Other than that I enjoyed the little journey as Ana figured out what kind of seer she is.
Getting kids eager to read is more difficult than ever. I have two children of my own. One LOVES to read, and the other would rather eat belly button lint. Now I came across a new series designed to interest kids from the get go. Nicole Zoltack had that in mind when she created her Seeing for the First Time. The characters were instantly likeable as well as the storyline. Between the werewolves and fairies, my kids were hooked.
Without giving away any teasers, the MC is a girl who is thrust into a world that she knew nothing about. The problem is it was the world she was living in her whole life. Sight is a gift and with it she learns there are things in the world, not entirely human!
It's a fun quick read. I suggest it for your kids. (I liked it too!)
Seeing for the First Time is a short eBook, at only 17 pages, however, after those 17 pages you're left wanting to read more. Just like the main character, Ana, you're introduced to the world of paranormal by her grandmother, and together you learn that there are different types of seers, each type being able to see a different breed of paranormal beings. From fairy seers, to werewolf seers, and Ana's Gram even mentions unicorn seers. I'm not going to mention any other types though because then I'd ruin the mystery. ;)
This story is short, fast-paced, and leaves you craving more! If you like paranormal stories and love seeing them reinvented in different ways, then you should definitely check out Nicole's What You See Is What You Get Series! :)
In only seventeen short pages Zoltack's Seeing For the First Time packed a punch. Ana has spent every summer with her crazy Gram. This summer is going to be different. Ana finds out that her family has a secret that keeps her family in two worlds. As the family secret is revealed she sees that her Gram isn't crazy after all and she is thrust into a new world filled with creatures both good and evil.
Zoltack's story is well described containing a refreshing angle in the paranormal genre. If you love the paranormal then you'll definitely enjoy this adventure into Ana's world. So many creatures are mentioned leading you to believe that so much more is coming...hopefully a full length novel of Ana's adventures. MORE PLEASE!!
I was given a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun quick read. Ana is the daughter of Werewolf hunter and granddaughter to a fairy seer. Yes a theme here is the family are a family of seers. They see different things and Ana never knew any of this as she never saw anything before. Until one day at her Grams she saw a hint of the fairies. So she goes on a mission to see if she could see anything and boy did she find what her seer powers are. In away I thought she was a bit silly going off on her own, but then I probably would be tempted. It be fun to see how she copes with this and if Victor shows up again.
This is an easy, quick read for younger audiences. Ana comes across as a kid with smarts. The fantastical element in the story certainly is present, though I would've liked to have seen more done with the fairies instead of vampires, since the fairy-filled book cover intrigued me. The fast pace might deter some readers and feel rushed, and there are a few typos, but if you're looking for something light to read that might give you a jolt of pace and action, you can take a look at "Seeing for the First Time".
Nicole Zoltack’s Seeing for the First Time gives a taste of myths, legends, and the people who see them. Ana believes her Gram to be crazy, but she soon discovers her family’s secret: they are seers of magical creatures. Ana can’t wait to find out what she sees. Ms. Zoltack hints at an entire fantastical world within our own, and she makes this world and characters come to life in such a short story. I look forward to what will come next in the What You See Is What You Get series.
This story about a seer was very short but long enough to make me want to read more. I really didn't want the story to end so soon when I just got into knowing a little about my characters. It was really sudden and vivid. Fast paced and very detailed.
