After centuries of war an uneasy peace has finally been negotiated between Elves, Dwarves and Men, thanks to Elon of Aerilann, Elven councilor to the High King of Men. One final task yet remains, one final bone of contention - to set the boundaries between their lands. It's a task that will be easier said than done. Although most of the lesser Kings signed the Alliance, not all wish to see it succeed, and some are willing to oppose it. Violently. For journeyman wizard Jareth it's the opportunity of a lifetime. Unlike many he's long admired the calm, seemingly aloof Elves, especially Elon of Aerilann and his paxman Colath. What he doesn't know is that the journey will test him to his limits, forge a friendship that will last for centuries, and change the Kingdoms forever.

In this novella of(The Coming Storm) Land Boundaries must be set. For each of the Elves, Dwarves and Men. Elon of Aerilann, Elven advisor to the High King of Men, helped negotiate the treaty between Elves, Dwarves and men. Along with is True Friend Colath and Wizard Jareth they must travel the entire Kingdoms to set up these Boundaries. There are those that don't want this and will stop at nothing to prevent them. These 3 will form a friendship to last a lifetime.
Having read the coming Storm Series first I decided to read this book last. *Laughing* I can't say what I did would work for others as now I want to reread for the 3rd time the Coming Storm & A Convocation of Kings! This is not a hardship as this series is Masterfully Written and puts Lord of the Rings to second place! I really liked how I got to see how these 3 become such trusting friends , the beginning of all.
I highly Recommend this Book and this Series. 5 STARS Patches

I don't usually read fantasy, so this novella was a bit out of my usual reading style. However, I did enjoy it. It was a tale of how Jareth, the Wizard, and Elon and Corlath, Elves, set out on a mission. They fight the firbolg, boggats and boggins along the way, win over hostile dwarves, and in the process bond together as real friends. If you like fantasy you'll probably like this.
(Note: This is supposed to be an introductory to the main characters in The Coming Storm)
In the spirit of Tolkien, this was very much akin to his adventure tales spanning travels by companies of mixed races across the various breath-taking terrains of Middle-Earth. Not to mention including the politics and racial prejudices of the different people. And just like The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring, this also included a visit to the Elven woodland realms with houses and walkways built into trees, and even a brief glimpse of the Dwarven people, which are every inch like Tolkien's Dwarves. And just like Tolkien's creations, the Elves of this piece are also tall, willowy beings of insurmountable beauty, grace, and aloofness in their quiet, reserved ways. Jareth, though, is certainly original in his rumpled wizard robes, messy hair, and endearing naive eagerness, only too happy to meet new beings and fight for trying to unite his world.
This would be breath-taking as a movie, but as a book, I was a bit bored by the journey from place to place, marking stones, trying to negotiate with the people along the way (think Fellowship of the Ring but without being chased by the Ring-wraiths or the impending doom of Sauron). It just felt like yet another epic road trip (though beautifully written) without really trying to stand out from works like Tolkien's. But I did grow attached to the characters, and I will most certainly be continuing on with The Coming Storm.
