Louisiana homicide detective Kara Gillian is doing her best to cope with everything that's happened to her over the past year, all while s continuing to hone her skills as a demon summoner. But lately she's beginning to wonder if there's a little too much demon in her world. She has a demon for a roommate, the demonic lord Rhyzkahl is still interested in her for reasons she can't fathom, and now someone in the demon realm is trying to summon her . And there's no way that can end well.
Meanwhile, people who've hurt Kara in the past are dropping dead. Kara is desperate to find the reasons for the deaths to clear her own name, but when she realizes there's an arcane pattern to the deaths, she knows that both the human and the demon worlds may be at risk unless she finds out who's behind it all. She's in a race against the clock and in a battle for her life that just may take her to hell and back. Sins of the Demon is the exciting fourth installment of the Kara Gillian series.
Diana Rowland worked as a bartender, a blackjack dealer, a pit boss, a street cop, a detective, a computer forensics specialist, a crime scene investigator, and a morgue assistant, which means that she's seen a lot of weird crap. She won the marksmanship award in her Police Academy class, has a black belt in Hapkido, has handled numerous dead bodies in various states of decomposition, and can't rollerblade to save her life.
This may come as a complete shock to you guys, but I know a thing or two about urban fantasy. Not too much, mind you, but enough to recognize a good UF novel when I read one. Here’s what I can tell you: Diana Rowland is one of the best. Whenever I get my hands on her latest novel, I’m absolutely certain that I will enjoy it immensely.
Sins of the Demon picks up just a few weeks after the great discovery at the end of the third book. Now that she finally knows what he is, Kara would like nothing more than to try and figure out all the details concerning Ryan, but she’s too busy saving her own life and career. Someone is killing people from Kara’s past, people she had every reason to hate. There isn’t a doubt in her mind that the deaths are connected, but she doesn’t know whether the killer wants to frame her or simply do her a favor. At the same time, someone from the demon realm is trying to summon Kara (oh, the irony), but unlike the demons Kara summons, she will not get the chance for a fair bargain. If they succeed, she will be nothing more than a slave to a demonic lord, and it certainly won’t be one as lenient as Rhyzkahl.
Here’s another thing that might surprise you: I hate love triangles with a fiery passion. I usually say that there’s no such thing as a good love triangle, and it is my firm opinion that there isn’t a good reason for an author to introduce one. But you see, that’s not entirely true, and Diana Rowland made me eat my words. She managed to write a love triangle that I actually enjoy, one that isn’t too angsty, that makes perfect sense, and is, in fact, quite necessary for the story.
I’ll write just a few words about the characters because that’s really where Rowland’s strength lies. (Well, that, the awesome plots and the simple-yet-intriguing worldbuilding.) After reading this novel I can honestly say that I want to be Kara Gillian when I grow up. She is now more skilled, more confident, but still has the good sense to run in fear when she’s out of her league – which happens often when you’re in the business of summoning demons. As for Ryan and Rhyzkahl… oh, dear *fans self*. I wouldn’t mind being in a position to choose between the two at all. As for the other characters, it is clear that Rowland takes the time to build each one, even the really unimportant ones. They all come alive for me every single time.
But this also needs to be said: I absolutely despise cliffhanger endings. A fourth book of the series either has a steady audience or it doesn’t. I simply refuse to believe that a cliffhanger influences this in any way. I took one star off my rating only because of that. Otherwise, this would have been a perfect 5-star urban fantasy, and I don’t give 5 stars to UF novels all that often. In fact, Hounded by Kevin Hearne is the only one I can remember.
If you love urban fantasy or simply enjoy reading one from time to time, make sure to put this on your tbr. Each book is better than the last.
Here's where we start getting some world building and I'm doing a happy dance. It's not that much, of course, but anytime I get a peek into a hell dimension (even one that seems to be as nice as this,) I get all giddy.
Mind you, this isn't even that significant to the story, but I love my little quirky loves. :)
Oh, and this novel gives a whole new dimension to relationship woes. I'm not going to spoil it, but ex's can be hell on a story. :) Poor Kara!
I also need to say that I really love her bodyguard. Eilahn is simply a delight. And a half. Kara is so lucky. And the xmas decorations? Delightful! But that cat??? Let's send that cat to hell!!! Just saying.
I'm having a great time with these books. It's still all about the investment factor, alas, but since I'm in the thick of it, I'm just rocking along without a care in the world. This is binge-watching for books and it's great great great. :)
Ok so when I reviewed the last 3 books in this series they were very positive and I enjoyed them very much and gave them 4 stars. This book took this series to a whole new level and I have to say, "OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK!"
Soo, Kara has gotten REALLY interesting, there is a great mystery plot that is tied into Kara herself, plus someone from the demon world is attempting to summon HER there against her will, which is cool. Her demon protector Eihlahn is literally the funnest character in the series (the way she deals with the cat Fluffykins is my literal favorite part of the series to date. Other than the Rhyzkahl lovin' scenes of course.) I am so interested in the bleeding over of the demon world to the real world (how is this stuff going unnoticed at this point? oh well, lol). I was kind of bummed we didn't see more Rhyzkahl here and...(RE:Ending which was AMAZEBALLS cliffhanger time!)
SPOILER:
Ew major step forward with Ryan + Kara! I WANT HER WITH THE BLONDE HUNKY DEMON LORD PLEASE! I am SUPER excited about the cliffhanger though, I think there's a really awesome potential to turn that lovey twist on its head, because who really knows why Ryan is brainwashed? I think he's more of a jerk than we've been led to think, and REALLY hope that now Kara is in the demon world that we can get to know Rhyzkahl better and get them more emotionally attached. I really wish she'd used the "f" word less and "sweet lovin" more in their scenes, then the Ryan + Kara thing could be more tenuous. WTF WAS WITH THE CLIFFHANGER?!?! HOW WILL SHE GET OUT OF THIS! TURN THE CAPS LOCK OFF!
Anywhoo, really really excited for the next one!!!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
*ahem* Excuse the language, but what the HELL kind of ending was that?! No, I’m sorry, that wasn’t an ending… that was more like a chapter ending, except my book must have been missing the subsequent pages. AHHH! What a cliffhanger. And now we have to wait a whole YEAR!? Is it available for pre-order yet?? Someone shoot me now. *Sobs*
Something that’s been ongoing in this series for a while, a bit of an issue with Kara, is resolved but not until the very flipping end of the book which made that ending that much worse but still made you happy that it nonetheless happened. Yes, I’m aware that sentence makes absolutely no sense.
I’ve attempted to collect my thoughts and form them into a worthwhile review without giving too much away. I do believe worthwhile should be replaced with ‘I’m going to ramble and forget to use periods occasionally so don’t mind me’.
The Storyline
The fourth installation in the Kara Gillian has finally arrived. Kara’s back and trouble seems to be finding her at every turn… but then again, what else is new? She’s dealing with her complicated relationship with Rhyzkahl and Ryan, people are dying who she personally knows and who she also has personally grudges with, someone is attempting to summon her to the demon realm, and on top of that her emotions are going straight haywire.
New Characters
I find that the further you delve into a series it’s usually a requirement to add in new characters to keep it fresh and new. Usually these characters end up being written in as useless characters that are easily disposed of. The few characters (mainly one) added into ‘Sins of the Demon’ were so well written and established in the story that I couldn’t remember a time when they weren’t a part of the story.
Eilahn is Kara’s demon bodyguard and roommate, put in place by Rhyzkahl when he realized that someone was attempting to summon her to the demon realm. Eilahn was hilarious and her sense of humor went extremely well with Kara’s normal snarkiness. (Is that not a word? My red squiggle tells me not, but it should be.)
Fuzzykins: Eilahn’s accidental cat. The presence of Fuzzykins led to some bust a gut with tears in eyes laughter. I think the scene that had to be my absolute favorite was the cat’s obvious dislike of Kara (and obvious love of Eilahn) when they were getting him in the car and the cat gives Kara a ’fuck you glare accompanied by a I-want-to-claw-your-face-off-hiss.’
”I do not wish her to grow upset,” Eilahn said, frown puckering her forehead. “I have heard that cats do not care to ride in cars. If I am in the front and she in the back, will she not grow distraught? Perhaps I should hold her in my lap.” “Um, that’s a pretty darn big carrier to hold on your lap,” I pointed out. She blinked. “I did not intend to have her in the carrier. Why can I not simply hodl her in my lap so that I can stroke her fur? Will that not calm her?” I had a vision of a psychotic cat careening around the inside of the car – following by an image of my mangled death in the ensuing wreck. “No,” I stated. Firmly.
Hahaha… Funny times.
So… I don’t believe I can say much more without giving anything away. This wasn’t a disappointing book at all and I still recommend this series highly… I’ve become a rabid Kara Gillan/Diana Rowland fan and I’m impatient as hell and the next book could not come sooner.
Things I should not do: review this book immediately after reading it. That sort of thing colours your perceptions and prevents objectivity.
Things I am going to do any way: review this book immediately after reading it.
Holy mother of crud on a fish cracker, but I thought the last Demons book ended on a cliff hanger. I'd go and spoil it for you but nah - you should just go read it . If you liked the first three you'll like this one too - more demons (new and old!) more secrets, some answers, but way more questions. But seriously this plot is dangling by its fingernails, the ledge is crumbling and the sharks of suspense are circling below.
(blah blah plot summary blah: Peeps from the demon realm are trying to summon demon summoner Kara to the demon realm to enslave her because they are totes jealous of her new summoning contract with sexy demon lord Ryhzkhal. Also people Kara has no reason to like and every reason to dislike are ending up weirdly dead. Kara also adopts a cat, and Ryan does that thing where he is a huge crotch wad, but Kara simultaneously forgives him and calls him on it because she wants to run her fingers through his hair. Eilahn is awesome.)
Disappointments include fewer sexytimes. That's pretty much it, so I hope you weren't reading only for some inter-planar bumping of uglies - because not so much of that this time. Also, this one is sliding a little further out from the police procedural genre - although I'm not surely this is a disappointment so much. Other disappointments include that cover, which seems better suited to tentacle hentai than this book (note: do not look that up if you don't already know what it is. Or at least don't look it up at work) Thank goodness I've got it as an ebook.
The mysteries have shifted away from monster-of-the-week murders to the larger plot bunnies that have been simmering below the surface the last three books. We are now familiar enough with the characters and setting to do some good background chewing, and delve deeper into the relationships. This is the traditional point in a series where it will either descend into melodramatic badness, or the melodrama will only serve to make it more awesome. I'm putting my bet on awesome, as Rowland seems to be able to contain the impulse to add lots of angst and fluff that doesn't contribute to the story. There are some entertaining "fluff" sections for sure, but all that fluff goes I to stuffing for filling out the world. Plus she follows the most important rule of not wasting her characters- by which I mean that everything in this installment was well set up for in the previous books. I am always irritated when series drag on and authors decide to dredge up some backstory they conveniently forgot to mention in the first 4 books or so just so that they'll have a plot for the new one (I'm looking at you Jeaniene Frost Don't give me that look - you know what you did).
Surprise delights: This one was actually kind of funny. Eilahn is officially my fantasy room mate, and I kind of love every second she is on the page.
Rating : 5 stars in a fit of post cliff hanger frothing, to be later downgraded to 4 once I sit back to think that it maybe wasn't as good as some other book I gave 5 stars to, and then later shamefacedly re upgraded to 5 when I think downgrading it is weird and screw that, I really enjoyed it anyway.
Really? That's the cover? WOW that's awful! The original art for the first two books was beautiful & then book 3 had that comic book cheese art & this just looks like a doodle by some 15 year-old emo perv kid! If I didn't know how amazing Diana's writing was (aka new to the series) that art work would have me running in the other direction! Still looking forward to the book but damn that's a cheesy cover!
Okay now that I've read the book, the cover art is the only bad thing about it! I would have given it a 5 star rating if not for the cliff hanger ending. Like so many others have said in their reviews, fourth book into a series it's unlikely that anyone reading is "new" to the series so for us rabid & loyal fans a cliff hanger is just mean! lol Though honestly I think the cliffahnger ending only really gets to me so much because it's such a damn long wait between books!
Anyway onto the actual content of the book. First of all I absolutely adore the fact that real life things, like money, no car, traffic & a broken water heater are just as likely to screw with Kara's life as demons & arcane practioners. I think that aspect of Diana's writing is what makes me enjoy her books so much, they are very relatable because at the core her characters are very much rooted in the real world, no matter if there are demons running about. I thought it was hilarious that Kara's water heater was busted & flooded her basement at the worst possible time because that's the kind of thing that happens all the time in real life.
As can always be expected from this series, for every scrap of answer we get 5 more questions raised. As much as the cliffhanger ending kills me, I do appreciate the impact it has. We the readers are left with the same feeling of shock & desperation that the characters are all in at the same moment. Especially everyone other than Kara because of the difference in time passage between the human world & the demon one. Just as we the readers have to endure a torturous year waiting for the next book, Ryan & the others are going to be freaking out for a chunk of time trying to figure out how to save Kara.
I am really looking forward to the next book because I'm sure we're going to get a huge heaping of answers since the bad guys never keep their mouths shut so you just know that evil demon lord who's collared Kara isn't gonna be able to keep from being all "Neener, neener Rhyzkahl" & reveal to Kara something that's bound to have her & our jaws hitting the floor.
Holy moly. What an ending!!!! If you have any intention of reading this series, all I can say to you is buy them all at once, because as soon as you finish one, you will want to start the next one. I am so anxious to keep reading that I can barely stay disciplined enough to share my thoughts before I rip in to book 5. But this book definitely deserves praise, so let me give credit where it is due.
One of the many things I loved about this book is that the mystery is all centered around Kara. Her old enemies keep popping up dead under mysterious circumstances and the only connection among them is her. It’s hard to investigate a case when you are the prime suspect. It’s even harder when some powerful demon lords are trying to suck you into their home dimension every time you leave the house. Thank goodness Kara has a widening circle of allies and a particularly butt-kicking demon bodyguard.
The book moves really fast. Obviously, someone is trying to frame Kara, but who? Why? I can tell you that I didn’t even come close to figuring it out on my own. (I never do with these books.) In fact, the villain turned out to be someone I never would have suspected. But as always, the reveal made perfect sense.
I love how Diana Rowland keeps building on the history we have learned from previous books. There are new layers uncovered throughout the story, and many play into the central mystery. But we also learn more about Ryan. The last book told us what he is. Now we learn who he is and I am so very intrigued. I am captivated by the push and pull between these two characters. I want them to get together so much! And yet I can’t bring myself to want to get rid of Rhyzkahl. I don’t want Kara with him, don’t get me wrong. But he is such an interesting character.
The thing is, Rowland has crafted so many interesting characters. I want to know more about Ryan. About Zach. About Jill. About Eilahn. Every new discovery about them just whets my appetite for more. I finished this book at bedtime on a work night and all I can think of is how I can keep my eyes open long enough to get started on the next book. Of course, part of that is the cliffhanger, but part of it is just because I am enjoying this world and these characters so much.
You should be reading this series. Start with book 1.
I always find it difficult to start a review for a book that I have mixed feelings about. I'm unsure of what I want to discuss first and I don't always know what to say when someone asks me if I enjoyed it.
I think I did. Mostly. Sort of.
I'm not sorry that I read it, but I'm not eager to initiate conversations about it with my book reading buddies either. So I guess that it ultimately falls into the "it was okay" category.
It was easy to transition myself back into the world that Rowland has created. It's a world of crime-solving mysteries, demons, summoners, oaths and bindings. It's well written and easy to understand, with a bold, foul-mouthed heroine that I enjoy.
But while I do like Kara, she isn't quite entertaining enough to carry the series on her own. I always find myself more fascinated by the secondary characters, including the demons that she has the ability to summon. But as with the previous installment, their appearances are scarce.
Rhyzkahl fans will be disappointed to learn that he makes one brief appearance. Ryan fans may be a bit more satisfied, but I found the interactions between him and Kara to be somewhat dull and occasionally awkward. This caused their emotional outbursts at the story's conclusion to become an eye-rolling moment for me.
The mystery that unfolds has some intrigiung aspects, such as the questions surrounding the victims' causes of death and the tragic ways that they were connected to Kara's past. But by the time the guilty party was uncovered and plans were made to apprehend him (or her), I had already begun to lose interest.
The giant cliff hanger ending has ensured that I will snatch up the next installment on its release day. But I suppose that's what it's designed to do....isn't it?
Anytime I'm really pissed because the book ended in a cliffhanger, I know I loved the story. If I hate the cliffhanger, it means I cared about what was going on in the book to what to know what will happen next. This cliffhanger rivals only one other cliffhanger... Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between and the book was just as good.
I love this series. I love the characters. I WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!!
**The only reason I'm not EXTREMELY freaking out about this ending, is because the next book in the series is being released in a couple of weeks...otherwise, I think I would be ranting**
This was by far my favorite book in the series. The Author's world, and character building has progressed wonderfully since the beginning of the series.
The writing, bantering between characters, and 'wicked' humor is what has kept me reading, and wanting more.
However, I have a confession to make... I REALLY don't 'like' Ryan that much, and I rather prefer Kara with Rhyzkhal (I'm hoping deep down that the more Kara learns about her 'past' the more she comes to realize that She and Rhyzkhal are meant to be together.. *crosses fingers*.. here's hoping).
I CANNOT WAIT TO READ THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES!.. the suspense is killing me :)
I know already that not all my sentences are going to make sense. I'm literately vibrating with excitement, confusion, anger and sorrow. I'm excited with how fantastic this book was, confused with where the turn of events will take us, angry that it ended and sad that I have to wait a full year to find out what's to come. I mean, come on..I love a good cliffhanger, but that was just mean. Brilliant. But mean.
Okay, I'll try to make a somewhat normal review, although all I want to do is rant and rave. I'll try to tone it down, even for just a moment. I'll also try not to give too many spoilers away, but no promises. All I can promise is that if it's a serious spoiler, I'll warn you.
Poor Kara. She's had a tough go this past year. She may be protected by her syraza/"roommate", but something big has in it for Kara and they'll try anything to get her.
I LOVED Kara's demon bodyguard, Eilahn. She was a hoot. The scenes with her and the cat were hilarious. Who'd a thought a demon could be so... normal?
Although this installment was more about Kara and who's gunning for her, I was disappointed there was only one scene with Rhyzkahl. Right when they seem to bond a bit closer, he's pushed aside for the action. *grins* Okay, so the action is great, but maybe we could slip a small scene in here and there. Is that too much to ask? *laughs*
So I have many conflicting thoughts on both Kara and Ryan's relationship and Kara and Rhyzkahl, but how about those ending lines with Kara and Ryan? That's plot changing lines right there. I'm not sure if I'm excited, or disappointed it wasn't Rhyzkahl. *throws hands up* I'm so conflicted, but none the less it was a fantastic novel. It keeps me guessing and had me on edge. This series keeps getting better with each book. I' begging for the next release... Is it available for pre-order yet?...
wow! check that cover out! that's freaky! is that skeleton head licking her face? very interesting cover. i'm more curious about what it's hiding though. come oooooooooooon more Rhyzkahl!
* * *
=( not as much Rhyzkahl as i would have liked. and that ending is just plain mean Diana Rowland!
After the dramatic ending of Secrets of the Demon, Diana Rowland is back with a vengeance with her fourth Kara Gillian novel, Sins of the Demon, that serves to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Despite all that has been thrown at her during the course of the past year, between murders with heavy demonic influence, her ties with a demon lord, and the discovery of another demon lord in hiding, Kara has managed to come out ahead. Unfortunately, someone is now trying to summon Kara from her world back to the demon realm.
If things weren’t tricky enough, Kara’s latest case is the first in a series of mysterious deaths, all with one link; Kara has a bad history with each and every one of them. While the murders are rooted in the Arcane, it isn’t exactly information she can pass along to the police force. Luckily she has her friends to back her up, but will it be enough to save Kara?
As anyone who follows the series knows, the previous book, Secrets of the Demon, left us with a bit of a surprise ending. This book picks up where the last one left off and does manage to fill in a little bit more about the revelation concerning Agent Ryan.
On the subject of Agent Ryan, I’m starting to like him more and more. We’re really starting to see his character develop, especially concerning his friendship with Kara. In earlier books, when there was a situation that would frustrate him, such as Kara spending time with demon lord Rhyzkahl, his immediate course of action would be anger. While this is understandable, especially given the circumstances, I like seeing him develop to the point where he is more willing to analyze a situation or at least try to put his friendship with Kara first over his dislike for the demons she surrounds herself with.
Speaking of Rhyzkahl, I do wish we would have had more of an opportunity to see him in this novel. He appeared in an early chapter, giving answers to Kara that only left us frustrated with more questions, before showing a display of temper that cools your affection for him. If anything, it feels like Rhyzkahl is being phased out while Ryan is brought to the forefront. I’ll withhold judgment, though, until the events of the next novel since I feel that Rhyzkahl might play a big part, given the final event in Sins of the Demon.
In regards to the mystery, I love that Rowland stepped it up and had her readers guessing at two different plotlines at once. Both were intriguing, both had you pinning your thoughts on one suspect then having to switch at the last minute. And Rowland does it in a way that, even after the book is done, you wonder how much deeper all the intrigue goes that wasn’t shown.
It was wonderful to get a chance to catch up with these characters, but it’s going to be hard to wait until 2013 for the next novel in this series.
Sidenote: I really do wish they would go back to the design seen on the first two books, Mark of the Demon and Sins of the Demon. This cover really just didn’t do it for me.
My Exact thoughts when SINS OF THE DEMON ended " Holy crap what just happened? NO you CANT END THERE." WOW WOW WOW. This is hard to write without spoilers but I will try super hard.
Kara is a fantastic lead character. I absolutely love all the police procedure stuff and investigating skills that Diana writes in. The world building is great, I love the different classes of demons and their descriptions. I have no problem picturing all of them and imagining them in our world. I was completely shocked when the "bad guy" of the book was revealed, I had NO clue it was that person. I absolutely love Elihan, I would so pick her as my demon roommate. I have always loved Ryan, him and Kara are so frustrating together but I continue to have high hopes for them. Rhyzkahl, we get to see some new sides to him and I cant wait to see what he does about the situation at the end of the book. The revelations in SINS OF THE DEMONS definitely helped me understand some things I had questions to but also added so many more questions to my head.
How long must I wait for book 4? PLEASE tell me it wont be to long. The cliffhanger is a killer but I have to say SINS OF THE DEMON is my Favorite Kara Gillian book yet. If you have not started this series you are totally missing out.
This time, we get to see more of a “human” side to the demons: specially Kara’s live in bodyguard/roommate. Their antics had me cracking up many times; but it wasn’t only there, the Demon Lord Rhyzkahl seems to be showing a softer side towards Kara, he can be almost tender with her, and not just during the throws of passion. Hmmm
Kara is given more and more clues on the big mystery that is Ryan; even though none of the demons can answer questions directly, and Ryan has absolutely no recall of what is going on. It’s a huge mystery that Kara is itching to solve. Then people who have once wronged her start popping up dead, Kara is be framed by someone, but why? Meanwhile, someone from the demon realm is trying to summon her to that side. Oh yeah, to say she has A LOT going on is putting it mildly.
The ending, OMG, the ending! I have been trying to read a few other books in between these, but nope I can’t, I have to KNOW what is happening! OMG, just WOW!....Sara
The beginning was a little slow but absolutely worth it as everything adds up. Not necessarily nicely (because it's Kara Gillian's life after all) but it all comes together.
Can't really give a review because this is brand spanking new and there's no way that a Spoiler cut is going to stop me from spoiling something.
Needless to say, there are a lot of things answered but every single answer seems to kick up new questions. There is a declaration that made me squeal with delight and there are two different sides to a character that confuses the hell out of me.
Love the "crew" and love Eihlahn
The end? I need the next book now because there's no way it could've ended like that.
OMG! This books ending! It's just Wow! I can't wait for the next book! Kara Gillian is a homicide detective and a demon summoner, so her life is both interesting and complicated. Most of the bad guys also have supernatural, demon summoning abilities, so it's not easy to do her job. Besides she has quite complicating love life, after all she sleeps with a demon lord Rhyzkahl and she suspects Ryan Kristoff being a demon lord.
Omg, omg, omg, omg, omg! There I said it...I have to say more? But I already said it, omg! I raced through the whole book and then the end. I kicked myself for not having the next book, and then I ordered it at once. Now I have to wait DAYS, DAYS I tell you for it to arrive. I am dying here. I am dying for that ending was brutal. BRUTAL. If I was not a fangirl of Rowland I certainly became one now. And Kara Gillian turned into one of my fav UF series around.
Ok here is where I tell you something about the story line. But I have not really gotten over the ending yet. Now that was a cliffhanger, pure evil and good. It made me want the next book like crazy, it made me love the series. It made me come to some conclusions (I do not know if I am right but if, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!)
Story *thinks about the end again*. I can't, the end! Ok, pull it together girl! People are dying and the only connection is Kara. She needs to figure it out. We learn things. Someone is after Kara. There *thinks about the ending again*.
Hell, hell, hell! 1) This is an hell of a story: less procedural cop, more darker UF. 2) Hell: more denizen of it than ever before, more detailed. (But less demon lord.) 3) What the hell? If you dislike cliff endings, wait before buying. This book ends with a huge bang (both because of what remains uncovered and what's revealed). Honestly, I hate to know I'll have to wait a full year before knowing what's going on.
Okay. This book was much better than the previous two. Which were crap. First off I LOVE her new roommate/ protector. And her crazy cat. Lol. And why was there pretty much no Rhyzkhal (am I even spelling this right?) ? Why did the author make us like him and get so hot for him in book one? Only to slowly make him a lame extra (bootycall) and then basically faze him out completely in this book ?! Very annoying. I want her with him damn it. Not Ryan!!!!! And Zack and Jill!!!! How cute are they?!?! Love them. They’ve all basically become the arcane Scooby gang. And I love it. Now the arcane/human cop case was secondary ( like it always should have been) and her life/ friends/her abilities/demon lore/ all the real juicy stuff was front and center where it always should have been. Finally this series is looking up. I didn’t like the ending with her and Ryan. But I did love the last few paragraphs. THE SUSPENSE!!!!!!
I could tell from nearly the beginning this installment would be, for lack of s better term, passive as compared to the first three. After chapter 5 it was apparent it was a lead up to the next book in the series. And I think it's necessary. I understand more. The story is far more interesting and intriguing than I first thought. Very happy with this book. Although I hate the cliff hangar at the end. Glad I am reading this series late in the game and have books five and dix waiting.
