Very very very simple for first time readers. Great to practice sounds in very short, achievable, books. The "after you read" questions are really good for boosting concentration and comprehension.

Eadie's favourite is "Bug On A Rug".

Our five year old is starting to show interest in reading. But regular picture books have too many different types of words for her to tackle, so they end up frustrating her. What should you look for in a book for beginning readers? It should have words that are simple to sound out, but they should also be funny so kids want to keep reading. Here's a series that we love: Now I'm Reading! Playful Pals, Level 1. It's fun but also easy for beginning readers to read successfully.

Now I'm Reading! books are little CD sized binders with 10 very short stories each. Each story focuses on a different sound: Rat Naps for the short a, Pig Sits for the short i sound, and Bug on a Rug for the short u sound. They also introduce common sight words like on, is & and. These are the building blocks your child needs to be able to read more varied picture books. After reading one story, your child can put a sticker on that story - a very exciting moment. Emily is so excited that she can read the first story that she almost leaps at any adult walking in the door asking if she can read them a story.

The best thing about these stories is that the illustrations and stories are funny, without being cutesy. They'll appeal to boys and girls, and they'll also appeal to older kids who are working to learn phonics. They have clear story lines (a beginning, middle and end) - so kids read to understand the silly story, not just hear the words.

If you like these stories, check out the others in the series: Animal Antics is another Level 1, Amazing Animals is Level 2, Snack Attack is Level 2, and On the Go is Level 3.

What I really want to get for summer fun: Rhyming War! (Now I'm Reading! Games) It's new last summer and doesn't have any reviews on Amazon yet. But we love playing games, and rhyming skills are so important to early reading.

General review for the Now I'm Reading Level 1 series -

Perhaps my very favorite phonics book, I mean books. There are 10 books here, each with a different vowel (or 2 books with one vowel sound). I love how the books build on earlier words - A cat. A tan cat. A tan cat sat. and so on and so forth. My new reader has gained a lot of confidence and speed through these books.

The pictures are hilarious (and in color) and we spend a lot of time laughing about them. He also loves to put a sticker on the front when he's read a book. The stories are a bit silly, but there's not much you can do when you're reading simple words. We've tried several, many, lots of different phonics books and thus far, these are the winners. I also love how they are stored in the plastic sleeves, all neatly tucked into a small book. No hunting all over for them and they stay nice and neat, no bent pages.

I have all three Level 1 books. We use them all, although the last book deals with consonant blends which he's still not totally fluent in. I'm not sure if we'll use the Level 2 books or if he'll be ready to tackle "regular" books by them. We'll see soon enough!

Highly, highly recommended.

Working off advice from The Well Trained Mind, I got Natalie a first level phonics book focusing on short a with CVC pattern. And she read it! Wanted the Bob books, but did not see them or have time to ask today. Plan to work through this set one vowel at a time mixing with other sets offerings on the same vowel.

This book contains:
1 Rat Naps - She read this one first, but it was very hard for her.
2 Fox Hops - We took a break for a couple weeks, then read this one. She read it much more easily. She had memorized a few sight words (on, of, a) and had more fluency. She also used the picture cues a couple times.
3 Pig - She read this with her father. Much harder time like #1.

I've had this on the currently reading shelf for months and finally just going to call it read. We've done several more, but not technically the whole group of books. She is currently working more on commonly occurring sight words and picture cues. We'll come back to these for more practice.

These are great books! Both my kids (4 & 6) enjoyed these. They promote reading, even if they aren't quite reading yet. I highly recommend these!
