Delving into the recesses of Kyo's past, we find the Sohma trio returning home on a rainy day. There, a mysterious man who has known Kyo for a long time meets them. Trust, loyalty and the bonds of family and friendship are tested, as Tohru must help Kyo deal with the "monsters" that he's been trying to avoid.
Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
Kyo and Yuki... I still haven’t decided which one of them I like more. As a teen I loved Kyo but I also couldn’t get enough of Yuki. As an adult it’s still the same. *lol* I really wonder if Tohru will be able to choose one of them. XD
Highlights of this volume:
”If I’m going to lose her anyway, I’ll make it so bad, I’ll hurt her so much that it couldn’t possibly hurt any more! I’ll make it so bad that she’ll never feel sorry for me again. That she’ll never want to come back.”
Awww Kyo!!! This was so sad! I think I understand him better now and it’s no wonder he’s trying to keep his distance to everyone. My poor boy! T_T
”From now on just like you listened to my complaints, Kyo-Kun, I want you to let me listen to yours. When things get tough… when you’re scared, when you’re weak, I want you to tell me. I want you to let me care about you. I want to be together.”
Is it bad that a Manga actually managed to make me cry? Because this scene with Tohru and Kyo… it made me cry so much. *sobs* Those two … they tug at my heartstrings. >_<
”People would say things so terrible you’d want to puke. Things that wouldn’t have been said if it weren’t for me. Shishou accepted them all and raised me in spite of it.”
I love Shishou!!! He’s such a pure and gentle soul and he must be protected at all costs! <333 Such a wonderful and rare person! And his relationship with Kyo… *sighs deeply* So precious.
”If you don’t come along willingly I’ll kidnap you. You’d better watch out.”
*LMAO* And this from Yuki of all people!! I know he was just kidding but I think there was a grain of truth in it and haha I rather like that seductive and playful side of him! XD
Can I have more of it in the next volume? Please? *makes huge puppy eyes*
Well that was... weird. Things took a really strange turn, way different from the rest of the story so far, and it was GREAT! Loved it. Then everything just kind of went back to normal. This is such a strange series!
Another fun read, it was good getting to know more about Kyo and his past. His relationship with his sensai/adopted dad was really sweet and cute as well. I really wish Kyo would wake up to his feelings about Tohru though, it was so obvious he had a huge crush on her.
Holy. Fricking. Fudgeballs. Natsuki Takaya has a way of violently ripping your heart out and letting you almost bleed to death...and then kindly putting it back and helping you to your feet, like nothing ever happened.
This book was honestly the best manga I have ever read. It was so emotional and had so much meaning behind it, taking a serious turn. I honestly loved how they revealed more about Kyo's past and how the relationships in the book grew larger.
tohru said “eh?” too much & the final chapter about ayame’s shop was a little weird but i still gave it 5 stars purely for the kyo chapters…oh my heart bleeds just to think about it 💔💔
spoilers //
kyo’s true form being revealed & tohru following after him despite being afraid, persisting on comforting him despite him hurting her & trying to shove her away…”i want you to let me care about you. i want to be together. i want to stay together.” 😭😭
and oough augh little kyo & the plot line between him & his shishou…how he acted so angry when he arrived to hide the fact that he was actually really happy…how shishou took him in & made him his son ,, their misunderstandings over all of the years ,, neither of them realizing that they felt the same way about each other…(i don’t want to be anyone’s burden. i don’t want you to be my dad if it’s going to hurt you.) (😭😭😭) “someday i’ll be the kind of guy who’s worthy of calling you my dad!” “you’re still my troublesome son” 😭😭
Five stars... did you expect anything less? Especially in this volume? Man... this volume was very, very, VERY hard to get through. It was extremely sad... you wouldn't think it because of the cover but it's true! The cover is a bit misleading. (Don't get me wrong. I love Momiji! He's so adorable but with what happens within the volume... yeah... you'll be like, "How can something so horrible be inside something so cute!?") It's THAT depressing. Sure, it has a great ending... BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS SAD! ESPECIALLY IF YOU LOVE KYO AS MUCH AS I DO! YOU'LL BE CRYING YOUR EYES OUT! *Blubbers*
Oh, Takaya-sensei... why do you do this to me? I love these characters so much and you make me cry by making them go through crap! It hurts me so bad... why? WHY!? You love seeing me crack, don't you!? *GASPS!* I knew it! You do! >_< In all honesty, she did a real good job in this volume. The suspense was killer! The sadness was overwhelming. And the love... *Sighs* ...the love was beautiful. Oh, my... I don't even know what to say... I'm still shaking from everything that took place in this manga. And to think that it's only going to get more hurtful from here. It's good but at the same time, it's bad! I don't want to keep crying! My eyes already hurt from all the tears I've shed in this volume! How can I take anymore? Not to say it was completely sad. Takaya-sensei did an excellent job in ending the book in a nice positive note. It was a very light and fluffy feeling which was nice considering how awful everything else was. For that, I thank you, Takaya-sensei. (Your talks of video games really helped me out as well!)
If you had any negative thoughts towards Tohru (and I have no idea why you would) then this volume will change your mind about her. She really was shining brightly in this book. She did what no one would ever do. Ever. Because people suck that way. She did something so wonderful that... that... if I was a guy, I'd want to go out with her... hell, I'd still go out with her! But Kyo would kill me if I did that so... no. Tohru was so kind to Kyo and understanding. God! It's so rare to find people who just understands now-a-days! She is amazing. Your heart will fall for her because of what she did. I cannot stress that enough! As you can see, Kyo went through... something dreadful... it was really hard reading through those parts. His pain... is so deep... it's as if it's happening to you. Reading it... it IS happening to you... Man... I can't even write about it because I'm already starting to choke up. My poor Kyo. *Squeezes him*
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the way Yuki and Kagura acted towards what happened to Kyo. I know they don't have ill will towards him but... I don't know. It leaves me feeling... yucky. Kagura... I don't know what to think about her yet but Yuki... blah! Then again, I never really liked Yuki that much. He seems to look down on a lot of people. I know I'm supposed to sympathize with him but... eh. I don't hate him but... it's that arrogance that gets to me sometimes... plus, he's a wimp. Personally... I would love it if my brother was a pain like that... on second thought... never mind. HOW IS AYAME THE SNAKE!? I JUST WILL NEVER GET OVER THAT! >_< I love Ayame. He's so much fun. He doesn't care what people think of him and for that, he earns my respect. There's a new character introduced! (I know... there's a lot of them! XD) Kazuma, or Shishou, is Kyo's martial arts master and the best daddy anyone could ever ask for! I am sooooo in love with him it's not even funny. I love how much he cares for Kyo! It's wonderful! Speaking of characters I love, Haru and Hatori makes a cameo. And so does Momiji and Shigure but they weren't in this volume as much. I can say that the small screen time Hatori appears in is so funny that you don't care if he wasn't there for most of the book. <3
Okay, so this one is going to leave you with a broken heart, red eyes, and a runny nose but it's worth it! I promise you that! If only to see how much more the characters grow and to see the relationships finally take off in the right direction! Yeah... it's going to hurt as hell, especially if you've come to love these characters to death... but... it's okay. Not everything in life is fluffy... the same thing goes for manga. Or anything really. Trust me. This series just keeps getting better and better with each passing volume. And from here? Well, only better. Please, don't take my word for it. Go and check it out yourself. You will not be disappointed. Besides, don't you just love hot guys in dresses? Or cute girls in dresses? Or hot guys and cute girls getting it on? Okay... so that last part doesn't happen but damn it! IT BETTER SOON!!! *Flails* GO READ IT NOW!
And in this volume, we saw the HUGE revalation about a character... The anime had more heartbreaking scenes and I preferred it more than the manga in this case but how can you not love both? Also, Ayame's shop...This person is so weird xD
This still brings me to tears, even after all this time. Kyo’s past brings me nothing but empathy for what he’s been through. Not only did we figure out how much pain he must’ve carried by himself, but we also find the root cause behind his angry outbursts since the first volume.
Mother’s love is said to be the best one can receive. That is, if we’re talking about a gesture done out of genuine compassion. Otherwise, if it’s simply due to pity for the sake of saving their child from the dangers of the outside world, never letting them enjoy their youth (with parental supervision), then what’s the point?
The rest of the volume returns to its same theme of lightheartedness, but comes off as a filler instead. The author must’ve put it out on purpose to get the story back its normal progression like the old chapters.
My baby! My heart bleeds for Kyou. I loved everything about this volume! From the mystery reveal to learning more about Kyou's painful past. His relationship with his adopted father was especially heart tugging! Onto volume 7!
My mom’s friend found a random manga book while cleaning out someone’s house, so they gave it to me (because of course!). In a fit of nostalgia I decided to read it, and that is how I came to read the 6th book of Fruits Basket, without having read any of the previous volumes! I don’t think I ever read this series in my weeby youth, but I do remember watching some of the anime. A lot of the anime? Enough that I recalled character names and the basic plot. Anyway, even though this is labeled “romance” and I remember that aspect of the story, this volume was way more about dealing with personal issues and interpersonal conflicts than I remembered from the show. I had fun reading this! (Even though the ways in which a lot of shojo manga has very problematic aspects are glaring in hindsight 😂) The pages with submitted fanart and stuff were a very entertaining blast from the Y2K past, too.
This volume had a lot going on!! First of all, Kyo's master came to town and he had a test for Kyo. One that involved Tohru! We also learn about his past and how his mother isolated him from everyone. After her death(suicide?), Kazuma adopted him and brought him to the dojo. There were so many feels in this one, OMG so many!!!!!!!! Like I'm 200% Kyo x Tohru. Sorry not sorry. The curse isn't quite mentioned in this one, but there is an addition to it for Kyo since he is the cat which is explained during his test. Also Kyo's past is introduced, so we begin to understand why he has so many anger issues and how his past has affected him. We also see how this test has affected him for the better! He definitely matures after it and I think he'll continue to afterward. I'm so looking forward to it!! Tohru and Yuki also investigate Ayame's mysterious costume shop. Yuki is annoyed by his brother of course, but they both begin to understand each other a little more. Ayame more so than Yuki because Ayame is really bad at communication and deciphering other people's advice. One day he'll get it...Maybe.
i love Fruits Basket because it's that story where a girl comes into a boy's/two boys' lives and changes them for the better but where the boys would turn into a-holes and keep treating her like crap in other stories, Kyo and Yuki are just increasingly lovelorn idiots who would do anything for Tohru and routinely look at her like she's their moon and stars and while you could nitpick and say there's like, a little bit of sexism inherent in this treatment it's just! so! cute! and! good! they adore Tohru and Tohru adores them and it's my literal favorite thing.
when Kyo is yelling at Yuki because he's an idiot and then suddenly stops to LOOK at her and... smiles? when Yuki is walking up those steps to tell her how much she means to him, and stops a few steps down and just... gazes up at her? when Tohru tells Kyo how scared and sickened she is but that it doesn't matter, she's strong enough to love him through it?
Fruits Basket Vol 6 INVENTED love, romantic and platonic, don't change my mind
Please help me... how does one recover from volume 6 of Fruits Basket? How do you cleanse yourself of the emotional overlode? Or do you just carry this emotional baggage along with you everywhere you go? Well its been eight years since I first read it and I would say that I haven't put this suit case of emotion down since.
Why is this such an emotional volume? Well I could type it out and spoil it for you, or you know, you could just maybe, possibly, perhaps just read it yourself and find out? Hint hint, it is amazing, go do it.
A volume that emits a Beauty and the Beast vibe, about looking past terrifying appearances and seeing the person beneath the surface. After years of rejection to find someone who accepts you for who you are, is beyond moving. So I beg you go read this series, the story of Tohru and her kindness needs to be shared.
This was just amazing, we learn about some of the darkness that keeps Kyo captive. This was just expert level at conveying emotion! One thing I have always loved about Fruits Basket was the level of story telling and character arc skill Takaya displays in this series. It makes me want to explore more of her works. It also reminds me why I love classical shojo manga. :)
Kyo's true form is revealed, and we reach about the point where I'm familiar with the story, as it were. That said, I feel like I have read a bit further than this? Not sure. I'm not always sure the comedy and the serious side to the story mesh super well, but hey.
I can officially say that this book is my favorite in the series so far. I can see the artwork improving, same with the characters Relationships with each other. Im glad that this book shares the deep thoughts of the characters and their greatest fears.
