Books of the Ancient Legends Series:
A Job From Hell Beelzebub Girl Voodoo Kiss Dead And Beyond Forever And Beyond Shadow Blood
The books can be read as stand-alone stories, but it is advisable to read them in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.
Omg, no. I'm not sure why I even bothered to start this, except for it was $.99 and has like 8,000 five-star reviews. I can understand the $.99 part, but the five-star reviews? Nope. Must be from all those folks who love the Casts' House of Night series. Amber and Dallas are the absolute stupidest characters I've come across in a very long while, and the whole set-up is just...so badly done. It reads very much like a first draft to me, like Scott was just sort of coming up with things as she went along and then didn't bother to go back and make sure all of the pieces fit together in a way that was believable. I haven't even really gotten to much of the paranormal stuff yet, but the everyday life stuff seems so ridiculous to begin with that I can't imagine the fantasy aspects working at all. And on top of all that there's the goopy soul-mate stuff that is so hokey it kind of makes me gag. Okay, yeah, I know, this is a pretty harsh review. I am not the person this book is marketed for, and maybe that makes all the difference. It's hit pretty much all of my pet-peeve buttons though. I'm moving on.
Having just completed an epic fantasy series I have spent the past 3 hours trolling Goodreads to find a new series to sink my teeth into. That's right - 3 hours of going though the lists, reading the reviews and deciding if I felt like sticking with the historical/magical fantasy adventures or dipping back into the vampire genre of which there is a disgustingly high amount of seriously crappy reads that upset my inner hippy when I think about all the poor trees who gave their lives in the process. There were many, many books that offered plots far more interesting to me at this moment however, the amount of excellent reviews for this book caught my eye and thus, I began the search for an ebook version.
Admittedly I have only read the first 15 pages, but I am dumbfounded, so much so that I have actually written a review (of the 200+ books I have read since I was lucky enough to come across Goodreads I think I may have possibly written 1 or 2 and they were nice ones)
Issue 1 - The mention of McDonalds. Really..3 mentions in the first 10 pages- are you being paid for these mentions Ms Scott? or is this a diabolical plot that, in the hopes that some mickyD honcho will read your book and offer you free cheeseburgers for life?
Issue 2 - The cab driver, you jump in a cab and they agree to drop you somewhere for $20 then, when you're 10 minutes from the location they dump you out on the side of the road AT NIGHT, offer no real explanation, won't even get out and get your bag from the trunk then ask for $30 instead of the aforementioned $20 ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? I'm from Australia, we are a laid back people but come on, do this to me and I will likely swear my head off at you, refuse payment, kick the side of your car door in then run like hell, hide in the bushes and hope to god you don't go American Psycho on me, but no, not our MC she just thinks to herself "well there's no point arguing" here mister, take my $30 even though I'm meant to be broke and working as a servant to scrape together enough money to pay my bills whilst studying. No, just no.
Issue 3 - Amber is meant to be a house keeper, WHY then would one of the occupants of the house whom she is there to serve 1.carry her bag for her and 2. tell Amber that because she must be tired, occupant/bosslady will serve her dinner in her room in 30 minutes?? huh?? again housekeeper no, but then little Amber has an internal sook about her ex, jumps in the shower then goes straight to sleep in the nude......yeh ok....
Issue 4 - Edward Cullen anyone??? really, what self respecting denizen of the night would lower themselves to to watch a girl sleep? Ok so she was nude but still.....
Issue 5 - some random old lady shows up, makes her breakfast, tells her not to bother cleaning up (helloooo did I mention that she is meant to be the housekeeper)as they have a dishwasher which, incidentally smells like lemons....offers no information helpful to her job then "mysteriously" mentions weirdos who hang around the front gates and stare at her..but she calls said weirdos are the house owners "friends" I don't make my friends hang out at my front gate (although I must admit it does appeal for some of them) then she takes off with a parting "if you need me, you know where to find me" hell, maybe my book is missing a page or two because at no point during this conversation did the random old lady say what her job capacity was OR where she lived/worked/housed her many cats and knitting. Also, I cant help but mention the part of the conversation where Amber says she needs to call her brother and random old lady's reply is "oh you have family that live around here, how nice"...... I spoke to my brother on the phone yesterday, he lives 3000km away...why does random old lady assume he lives nearby?
Issue 4 - Here's the real reason I felt the need to spend the last 20 minutes writing this...her bother calls, first she has a picture of him in a diaper as her called ID picture - really, a diaper, if i saw either of my brothers in a diaper I would go to my nearest surgeon and request an immediate eyeball transplant. Said diaper clad brother then suggests Amber should go into the woods, break into someones hut and make off with their loot. now, I don't know about you but I have to say that this confuses me deeply, particularly when she seemingly agrees to it and her only concern about the whole event would be that her ex boyfriend can then add "deception" to the list of reasons why they cant take their relationship to the next level...no I think the number one reason of abject stupidity would make all other reasons entirely superfluous. Stupid, diaper clad brother then somehow, suddenly arrives in the house with her - no knocking at the door, no one shows him in, he just appears in the kitchen...
This all happens in the first 14 pages and annoyed me enough that I stopped reading and came back to Goodreads to register my annoyance. but, being the sucker for punishment that I am, I feel it almost necessary to finish this book - If I could struggle and force my way through 3 of those awful house of night books then I can, by god finish this....in the words of the disgraced former Californian governor - I'll be back...
Head over to yabookscentral.com for more of my reviews. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars. Everyone who knows me knows I don't give 5 stars easily. In the end, I decided it deserved five stars rather than four because it truly stands out from the crowd and was one of the most entertaining, action packed and funny books I've read in a long time. I'm not going to sum up the plot because others have done it before me. Here's what I liked and what I didn't like so much. To begin with, the punctuation is British English. This is a long book, think 430-450 print pages, with plenty of action. At less than a dollar, it was a bargain. I expected it to slow down in the middle, but instead, the pace picked up even more. There's so much plot, most authors would probably have turned this into three books. Even still, it doesn't read rushed. The world building is very well done. The characters are enticing, diverse and likeable. The plot kept me on edge. By chapter three, I was completely pulled in and couldn't stop reading.
+ excellent writing with an intrinsic plot and description + good editing with no grammar or spelling issues + the main character, Amber, wasn't your usual whiny heroine. She actually had a backbone. That's commendable nowadays when every book seems to feature someone who keeps moaning, whining, complaining and so forth + a very original plot with many new paranormal elements that haven't been done before. Yes, we had vampires already, but it's not all about them. We also have Shadows (a group of immortal warriors), succubi, a demi goddess, demons, ghosts, a fallen angel in the form of Lucifer's daughter. + it can be read as a stand alone novel because the story per se is rounded up and complete, with a few elements left open for further exploration in future books + it was one of the most hilarious books I've ever read, if not the most hilarious one + on the cover you see a girl in the middle of nowhere, lost, scared, but going on, still fighting. It suits the main character seventeen year old Amber. In a time when covers are often chosen for the sake of attracting readers rather than to tell the story of the book, this cover is a breath of fresh air.
- it's advertised as grade 8 and up. At times, the language was advanced, so I'm thinking more grade 9 and up. - don't get me wrong, I liked Amber, but I felt Cass stole the show. I can't wait to read more about her.
Even though I usually reserve 5 stars for the classics out there, it really deserves 5, no question about that. Thoroughly recommended!
I read this book in less than 2 days after I stumbled across the free sample chapters. I highly recommend it to everyone. Once you start reading & laughing, you will love it as much as me! The book was full of twists & turns I didn't expect and kept me hooked from the first pages... I thought Twilight was good, but this book nearly threw me. For one, all the characters were so diverse and likeable. There is Amber, a normal teenage girl with wit and humor, her overconfident brother Dallas, who gets her to steal some jewels, then there is Aidan, who shares a bond with her, and Amber's friends Angel, Clare & Cass, who are all from different backgrounds and who try to help her. The characters are so easy to relate to and I was quickly wrapped up in the story. There is no tediously long and boring getting to know the characters. There are no pages where nothing is happening. I can only say: This book was beautifully written and is perfect because it has everything: Humor, romance and a plot that won't allow you to stop reading. A job from hell is definitely a must have. My Rating: It's the best paranormal book there is. Download the sample chapters and see for yourself!
This is one of those books--one of the LEADING of those books--where I just really can't say what I hated the most! Was it the moronic Amber who can't make up her mind about anything and whines like a neglected teakettle stuck in a time-loop? Was it the dumb, dumb, DUMB Aidan who, throughout the entire book, is sticking his face in beehives, tripping over his own feet, or serenading a girl he shared all of three words with? Was it the cardboard secondary characters, who sit around and twiddle their thumbs, trade bland insults and things that I think were supposed to be jokes?
Was it the fact that nobody in the book ever SHUT THE HECK UP?! I swear, there wasn't a single scene that wasn't stuffed with inane dialogue, no matter what's going on, who's dying, how close the hourglass is to emptying, etc.
Was it the oh-man-Aidan's-gorgrous-but-wait-maybe-I-should-run-away-my-ex-is-an-idiot-but-man-Aidan's-gorgrous-but-I-really-think-I-should-run-away mentality?
Every second scene, someone in the book was either flying off the handle about something that didn't matter, snapping at people they profess to 'love', or crawling on their bellies for forgiveness in a scene that inevitably ends up with them kissing or slapping each other's backs and getting back to the nonexistent plot for a paragraph or two, BEFORE THE WHOLE THING REPEATS OVER AGAIN.
I cannot BELIEVE that so many people thought this piece of trash was good. Books like this make me fear for the fate of all humanity.
Read a book written by an author who shares your initials.
After a little bit of thinking and pondering, I actually decided to give this book 3 stars instead of 2. Which rarely happens. But it just did.
So basic plot in a nutshell, Amber comes to remote Scotland to be the maid of enigmatic and wealthy Aidan McCallister. Though cooking and cleaning is not Amber's forte, she was selected from some pretty stiff competition, and she really needs money for college, so instead of having fun in London, she takes the job.
When her hardheaded brother Dallas shows up and says he found some hidden jewels stashed in a cabin in the woods and persuades her to help him steal them, Amber unwittingly finds herself a pawn in a supernatural war. And then finds out her new boss and his friends are creatures of the night, that she is fated to love Aidan and no other forever, and that she now has a special gift that everyone in the superantural world will literally kill her for.
So Aidan has to protect her. Because if this girl who he doesn't know dies, then he will die also. Because if this annoying and immature girl is not in the world, then he can never love anyone else and life will not be worth living.
Sound familiar?
Its really hard for me not to compare young adult vampire romance novels to Twilight. Particularly when they borrow so many tropes from that series. And this one definitely does that. But after reading this and thinking about it, as much as it borrows stupid cliches, recycled characters, and annoying habits from that series, I do like this book better. And here's why.
Though Amber, our main protagonist, is really annoying, I like her a whole lot more than I like Bella. Amber actually fights back against Aidan's Edward-like controlling behavior and does not let him tell her what to do. She has no interest whatsoever in becoming undead and rather likes being a seventeen year old human. In fact she has plans for her life which include drinking espresso, going to college, being with her family, and you know, living.Amber has a respect for life that is so lacking from Miss Swan.
In addition to vampires, there are demons, succubi, and other such dark and twisty supernatural creatures present. This is definitely a darker, more action packed book with an abundance of supernatural creatures warring with each other both on Earth and in Hell. Though I feel like the supporting cast in Twilight are deeper and more well-rendered, a lot of these characters have more potential for awesomeness, and I am really looking forward to hearing more of their stories.
The vampires in this series don't sparkle in the sun. In fact, they drink human blood, can't go out in the sun, and are actually, in fact, dangerous.
There is an actual plot that involves a paranormal war, political alliances, betrayal, necromancy, psychopomps, and traveling between worlds. It is not a book that pretends to be action packed but is basically 90% romance.
There is no love triangle. 'Nuff said.
With all of those positives, there are quite a few negatives as well. The world building in this book is flimsy at best. There are a lot of good ideas here but the writing is weak and needs honing. There are a lot of holes and not enough imagination or creativity. Because honestly, this book is kind of like the love child between Twilight and The Mortal Instruments. It was still entertaining and a fast read, but there was nothing new here. Nothing mind-blowing, inventive, or anything that I couldn't have predicted would happen. The characters, for the most part, were one-sided and carbon copies of many a cast from young adult paranormal romance. No re-inventing of the wheel here, but light and fun, nonetheless.
I am also quite sick of instalove being somehow justified by fate. It is a lazy excuse to insert instalove into a storyline, and no matter how hard you try to justify it, instalove is still instalove, and still something I loathe. Having the MCs "bound by fate" actually makes me like the love story less. Because these characters are not in love because they've gotten to know each other deeply, or have a connection that is real and believable. They haven't peeled away their respective layers or taken time to really delve into their minds or bodies. They don't actually "fall in love," they are just are already. This is an incredibly lazy way to write romance. Having two people skip the actual falling in love part just to be automatic soulmates is stupid. No matter how much paint or glitter or fake stories you attach. It still amounts to nothing.
I'm gonna just snowball on the instalove point by saying that Aidan and Amber are both really annoying. Aidan is a hotter version of Edward Cullen. Another trope I hate is justifying a controlling vampire's behavior under the guise of him trying to protect his beloved. And Aidan is no different. But as I stated above, Amber makes it a little better by refusing to listen to him and actually fighting back. However, this doesn't completely save her from being completely annoying. She is supposed to be seventeen, but if I hadn't known that I probably would have placed her about 14. She is immature, young, whiny, and oblivious. She kept making really annoying and sarcastic comments that I think were supposed to make her funny, but really just made her more of what I mentioned above. And almost more annoying than the instalove was Amber's complete inability to make up her mind. Every other page I had to endure this immediately followed by this And then back to this And then in two pages, guess what? Yep.
And the ending was very very meh. So there's that.
On another plus side, Cass and Kieran are pretty awesome. Maybe not as awesome as Alice and Jasper were, but I enjoyed these two characters more than any others. Cass is a minion of hell, the daughter of Lucifer himself, and she is a wise-cracking, sarcastic, take-no-prisoners, spunky know-it-all and I loved her. Kieran is Aidan's big brother and I loved his cockiness and bad-boy attitude. I found him much more enticing than Aidan and thought just because his eyes didn't smolder or lip curl up with angst, he was sexy and underrated. And I kinda like sexy and underrated. I hope that his story gets juicier as the series progresses.
So this book sits in the middle. It annoyed me, but it was entertaining. There were things I hated but things that were funny. And since the next book in the series is about Cass, my favorite character, I will give it a shot. Looks like I've got a new series on my plate. This does not bode well for my reading list.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE. I mean: WOW. This book was amazing. I’m lost for words....
I wish I could write this review in red or gold because that’s how much I loved it. Seriously, when I started I didn’t expect much. Now I have an addiction. It’s called “I lost my heart to A job from hell” – This book has hit home with me.
To start… When I got the book, I wanted to save it for a quiet weekend as I was supposed to learn for my exam, but lazy me, I had to start rather than learn and couldn’t put it down after I gave in to my curiosity and read the first 5 chapters. I ended up doing nothing else but read, ignoring my family, my beloved dogs, who were attention starved (and grumpy) by the time I finished and I was way behind my learning schedule. Was it worth? Oh yeah. Definitely! I will probably end up reading it a second time because Amber is so funny.
I hoped it’d be like any other paranormal book: good, exciting with some clichés and a whiney character. But I was wrong: This book was mind blowing, Funny as hell (something I never expected from a paranormal book) and just fascinating from beginning till the end. It was perfect.
I. LOVED. IT. Need I say more? The characters, especially Cass, Amber, Kieran, were strong and likeable – at times, I wished they existed and were my friends. Oh well! Anyway, I feel this book deserves praise for being so original & amazing. The author did a good job to interweave elements to keep you hooked throughout the book. At the end of the last chapters I was only thinking “please don’t end, please let there be more pages”. My only complain is: This book should come with a big warning " highly addictive", so save it for a quiet weekend, and for good reason: it’s impossible to put down. Anyway, I loved, loved, loved it and can’t wait for the sequel. ********************************
When I saw this book I instantly wanted to read it, I love all of J. Scott's work because she fills each book with lots of plot and action, I'm a big fan and I think this book is great. It's funny, and if you can't laugh at it then maybe you're a little too uptight. It was made to be funny and I think any paranormal fan would like it.
I'm the author so, naturally, I'm biased. After a year of writing and editing 94,000+ words, this is my baby. Never felt about any other book this way before.
A word of warning before you read this book, this book is difficult to put down. Just thought I should warn all potential readers and trust me you DO want to read this book.
A job from Hell by Jayde Scott is an astounding book, it’s not very often that a book grabs me from the first page and holds my attention till the very end; but Jayde Scott did absolutely that. The characters are well written, I especially like Amber’s sarcastic personality, it made for some very enjoyable reading.
Seventeen-year-old Amber is forced to get a job during her summer holidays before starting college. She gets a job as a house-keeper in a mansion located in Scotland; let’s just say that her housekeeping skills are nearly non-existent so its lucky for her the mansion is already spotless. Amber hardly does any work at all, instead she spends most of her time snooping around the mansion and of course drooling over Adrian who just happens to be her boss. Everything is going great for Amber, but all too soon she finds out that her job is turning out to be a lot harder than she ever imagined, there are secrets that she must uncover and her life will never be the same again. I’m telling you this book has everything, humour that had me laughing out loud at times, romance, action, hot guys hehehe and suspense, this book had me on the edge of my seat at times and I just had to know what was going to happen next. This book is superbly written and exceptionally expressive; it makes you feel like you are in the beautiful world that Ms Scott has created.
I could go on and on about how great this book is but I don’t want to say any more because I don’t want to spoil your reading experience. This is a definite must-read. I highly recommend this book to all Paranormal-Romance lovers. An unquestionable 5 stars from me, I just hope I will get to read something written by Jayde Scott sometime soon. Well done Ms Scott thank you for this is truly remarkable book that I will be reading over and over again for years to come.
Every now and then comes a book I wish it would never end. This was one of them. It was very funny, I've no idea how many times I actually laughed, but it was a lot. Seventeen-year-old Amber's forced to take a work placement in Scotland as a housekeeper during the summer holidays before she starts college. She needs the money and the job pays well. The house is eerie, dead. Its inhabitants, sexy Aidan, his brother Kieran and beautiful Clare, are hardly ever there, always arriving at night, if ever. Amber hates the job; she has higher aspirations but lacks the money. Her brother, Dallas, persuades her to break into a shed in the woods in the middle of the night because he claims to have spied valuable gemstones through the window. The ploy goes well, until Dallas disappears and Amber's forced to find her way through the pitch black alone while being followed by a blue light. She finds the gemstones, but someone's after her after she's just unknowingly entered a paranormal race and scooped up the first prize. Days later, strange things start to happen, like seeing people no one else can see. Aidan's suddenly starting to spend time with her, making her fall in love with him. Soon, she's exposed to an immortal world she never knew existed: a world of love bonds spun by fate, a world where demi goddesses, succubi and demon children reign, one where Shadows and vampires have been fighting to find an ancient spell book for centuries. By winning the prize, Amber's now the only one that can travel to the otherworld to retrieve the legendary book of secrets. But she's mortal, and no mortal has ever survived that journey. Who can she trust to bring her back from the dead? Sexy vampire, Aidan, who wants the book so badly but claims to have a bond with her? The Shadows, whose demon child queen feeds from her own people? Or the devil's daughter and chaos angel, Cassandra, who keeps helping Amber for no apparent reason? I'll stop here so as not to give away too much of the plot. Let's just say a lot more's going on with various subplots that intertwine at the end very nicely. The writing was absolutely beautiful, the strong voices, mostly Amber but a few times we get Aidan's perspective, drew me in straight away. Amber's not a whiny girl, she's fierce but also vulnerable. Aidan, her love interest, was sexy as hell. Each character suited their purpose with plenty of hidden layers to them. No one was truly good and truly bad. I liked how the author showed their emotions, motivations and what drove them to act the way they did. A very original plot, the twists kept coming with plenty of cliffhangers. But what I liked best was the voice because it really spoke to me. From the the plot, to the characters and beautiful writing, everything drew me in and kept my attention. I was also surprised to see such good editing with no grammar or spelling mistakes in an indie book, but given that Ms Scott is also a published non-fiction author this might not come as a surprise. I hope the second book in the series will be out soon.
My thoughts? The cover was definitly an eye-catcher. That's what lead me to 'A Job From Hell' in the first place(it was b/c of the title too). And when I read the summary I made up my mind- Read it is. Once I was through half the book I realized this wasn't what I expected(in a good way). The most lovable thing is -what else?- the relationship. Amber and Aidan are great together. You have all the conflicts and humor(Bonus!). Also the wonderful characters- Cass and Kieran always getting on top of each other is enjoyable. I wouldn't say you'd die if you dont read this(exaggerating much?).. but this IS a goodread.

MY GOD, STOP WITH THE FRICKIN' BANTERING! *deep breath* Okay, with that out of the way, this is a book with some nice ideas that rubbed me entirely the wrong way.
Amber has just been dumped off at a castle in Scotland to work as a housekeeper. It's clear she is out of her league, but that's okay because they are there to steal some diamonds from a hut. I'm not sure how Amber's brother even found that they were there, but okay. Unfortunately those diamonds are part of a puzzle that confers the ability to see and hear the dead, and by pure dumb luck, Amber manages to win that prize. Too bad the sexy vampire Aidan needs that prize so he can perform a ritual to remove his vampirism.
Now to explain my all-caps outburst. Every single character in the book banters and snarks every five seconds. It doesn't matter if the person has almost been killed, or is enduring a heroic trial in a supernatural land, they will not shut the hell up. When they don't banter, they have commitment issues. You think I exaggerate this, but I don't. I wanted to commit bodily harm on both Kieran and Cass halfway through the book due to this. When it's not banter, or commitment issues, it's slap-slap-kiss. Words cannot describe how annoying this gets. These are an assortment of hundreds year old immortals, and the daughter of Satan, and they don't know that you should shut up and stop arguing when someone is dying. The book drastically needs a "Dude, shut up!" character.
The plot starts out okay, but quickly gets tortured with a lot of irrelevant characters and an unclear purpose. I really wasn't sure what the Shadows were, for one, or how they truly related to the plot until they finally go out and say what their stake in it is 3/4 the way into the book. There's horrifically bad insta-love going on: Aidan sees Amber once in London and it's sweet fate despite really no reason to like her. He then arranges to get her alone in his castle, and I'm really not sure it was for good intentions originally: if she had never stumbled into the race, she'd probably be a vampire herself, regardless of her ideas on it. There's something called the Lore court, but it's not particularly developed well either. Cass particularly again is the daughter of Lucifer for goodness sakes, and that never even gets developed. Apparently the daughter of hell is quite friendly when you get to know her. It's just this fantastically uneven plot that needs far less banter and some actual set-up.
The characters? Eh. Amber acts stupidly, Aidan acts stupidly, pretty much everyone acts stupidly. The only characters that are interesting in concept never get developed: Blake for one could have shined, and I wanted more about Aidan's former love and master Rebecca. Many of the characters have no depth: Claire for one is just there, and Devon too.
Finally, good lord, you do THAT to Amber at the ending, and you don't even spare a few pages to go into the implications? The ending just stops, and while the book feels a little long, I wouldn't have minded a lot more added to the ending.
Honestly, this book annoyed me. I'm sure others might like it, but it just grated on me.
Warning: This book is CONTAGIOUS! This is the best supernatural book I have read! OMG it kept me on the edge of my seat.
My Rating: 5 of 5!
My Cover Thoughts: I love the cover because it shows a girl dressed in a white dress running from the woods towards a house.
My Thoughts/Review: okay, okay so where to start! OMG I got this as a book recommendation and thought hey this sounds like an awesome read. This is the BEST read I have had in a long time. I was so entranced in this book I could not put it down.
It starts of with Amber needing a job to pay for school so her brother applies for a house keeping job for her for the summer. But when she gets there to the new house she does not see the owner. She tries to cook and clean as best she can but is not very good at it. Then she meets the owner of the house Adian and realizes he is the same age as her or so he looks it. She knows that there is something wrong with him but she is not sure what it is. Then her brother comes up with this crazy plan to steal some jewels he found in a hut in the middle of the woods. They make a plan for that Friday and she steals the jewels for her brother only to find out she won a paranormal race and has won the ultimate prize.
I would go into more but I would ruin the read for the reader but I will say this, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED BY THIS BOOK!
Memorable Quotes: I am not sure what page because I read it on my Android phone and it does not display page numbers. Adian talking to Amber, tracing a finger along my collarbone, adian nodded and planted a kiss on my lips. “I love you. We’ll always be together.” (Adian) “I love you too.” I stood on my toes and pulled him closer. “I thought you’d never say it.”
This is a must Summer read!!! A Job from Hell was a real page turner I could not put down. If you're new to Jayde Scott, then hang on for a heart pounding author who knows how to get the blood pumping. Jayde Scott has done a phenomenal job by taking us into the daily life of an intelligent woman stricken with a gift that she doesn't want to have but makes her the target of people who have real supernatural powers and want what she has.
I had so many questions with this book: Can Amber trust Aidan since he wants to have the prize? Did Aidan really murder his lover Rebecca or is someone taking advantage of Amber's feelings for Aidan? Jayde Scott has taken this mystery to a whole new level. If you love a good mystery and enjoy some laughs, don't let this one pass you by!
There are so many things that annoy me about this book. So I'm not going to go into it too much, otherwise it'll just turn into a rant.
It has all the cliches of a paranormal romance, and all the characters are quite flat. The lead - Amber - is supposed to be all strong-willed and adjusts to the idea of vampires/demons etc. very quickly, yet gets talked into stealing some jewels in about 30 seconds flat. She can't make up her mind about Aiden (gorgeous vampire cliche - check!) and seems to go from absolutely-hating-him-and-she's-going-to-leave-and-she-never-wants-to-see-him-again-and-she-just-wants-to-have-her-old-life-back to letting him kiss her and melting into it (kissing cliche - check!), also in about 30 seconds flat. And this happens about 12 times. Then she has periodic weird moments when she's all like SASS! which don't really fit with the way she acts the rest of the time.
Then the editing wasn't great; Amber's brother's name is Dallas; the author, character and book are all British yet American words for stuff (diapers, college instead of university, parking lot) kept appearing; Amber's parents are all like "yeah 17-year-old daughter, totally go live in Scotland for two months. We're not even going to make sure you get there ok or anything!".
There are a couple of saving graces in this book, in that some of the secondary characters are quite interesting (namely Cass, and I think Blake has the potential to be an interesting character) and there are a couple of funny moments.
I got this book because it had been recommended to me loads, and was free. I don't really understand all the rave reviews, and wish it hadn't been free so I wouldn't have got it.
I loved it. It's one of my favourite books of all times because it's funny, has a great, original plot and lots of hot guys. The writing's beautiful with lots of depth, witty dialogue and picturesque description. It reminded me a bit of Sophie Kinsella's style but with more action, better dialogue and lots of paranormal elements. The romance part was sizzling hot. And Lucifer's daughter Cassandra and Aidan's brother Kieran had me rolling on the floor with laughter. The paranormal elements were very inventive and didn't focus on the vampires alone. I could see the Shadows and their queen (aka Exorcist kid) would play a bigger role in the books to follow, which is awesome since I love reading about voodoo and dark magic. I really liked Aidan and hope there's going to be more of him in the books to follow. Nothing beats a story with a hot, Scottish hunk. I'll be the first to buy the next book in the series.
OK so here goes.I never write reviews for books- as I think books are like art, creatively written with everyone having their own interpretations so there is not really a " best" and " worst" out there. Right? I happened to find this book while searching for a good book to read and for 99 cent I don't think I had anything to lose. But Wow. A job from hell is amazing. I am complete awestruck. Everything fits perfectly. The whole book was intense, loved especially page 308 till 398 when Amber descended into darkness to the threshold of death that no-one survives and the way Aidan reacts- I thought I would need a heart monitor. What a beautiful heart wrenching story of almost betrayal and dark love. The price of 99 cents is way too low- it was worth much more than that!!!
A job from hell blew my mind. Non stop action from start to finish. Lots of twists and an end I didn't expect. Loved all of the characters especially Amber and Cass. This book is the first series since Twilight and the Vampire Diaries that I really like and that says a lot. There are many fiction books that show a weak protagonist, but this was the opposite. Amber shows courage in the face of a deadly situation. She doesn't allow her strong feelings to intervene or cloud her mind. It's very well written. I enjoyed it and recommended it to my friend who enjoyed it just as much and finished it in one day after reading for hours because she couldn't stop
I was sad to put this book down. It was that kind of book that wormed its way into my heart and when I was finished I just felt like I have lost some special friend! It tells the story of Amber who meets a vampire, both of which are kinda star-crossed lovers that want to be together but due to various circumstances they can’t. And Amber sacrifices, giving up what is important to her. And this way risks a lot. This book is funny but it is also sad and thought provoking. That she was dumped by her boyfriend before meeting Aidan makes it so real. It’s definitely an enjoyable read.
A job from Hell is a breathtaking story where there are no coincidences, only destiny. All in all I can say that I have read A job from hell in threes sittings ( with over 400p it’s not a short read) and the chapters often end as cliffhanger prompting you to read more. There were plenty of pages where I had to laugh and got back to work with a huge smile on my face. Her description of Amber, and her work situation is just a must read to get a good laugh during your breaks. And if humor isn ‘t enough for you, the fantastic plot is just thrilling. I can't imagine anyone not loving this book.
Amazing Amazing! It's my all time favourite. The writing is so captivating and every chapter left me clinging for more. It's the humour that I love. The twists that took me by surprise. The plot line that is just perfect. The ending I didn't see coming. Some complain that it is too fast paced. For a book with almost 450 pages, I think this is the best part. ok, so it is filled with lots of action but I don't think one can complain. You feel like you take a world travel by reading it and Jayde scott could have easily made two books rather than 1 out of a job from hell. So, it's a good offer in my opinion and I would have paid easily $14.99 rather than just 99c- that is had I been familiar with her before.
This is one of the best books I have ever read! I don't think that any other book can really compare with it. It's not just a book with some love romance and vampire/angel stuff and good character development, it's got a really good mystery to it and the humour makes it funny to read. This is a novel I will love to read again and again. The story itself is so different from a lot of books I've read and the suspense kept me going, going, going. I honestly think that people would miss out if they skipped it and want to thank a reader for recommending this book to me.
UGH, why did I read this. Moments of my life I will never get back :(
No I don't want to read the sequels and no this book shouldn't have been published.
No imagination went into this book. It was more like,"hmmm what are people into these days? The supernatural world! I KNOW! I'll write a completely generic book with a really annoying main character and a vampire who loves her." Sound like something you know? I'll give you a hint: Edward and Bella. Now I've never read Twilight, but I know what it's about and it was pretty much the book that made vampires popular. So people tried mimicking that and A Job From Hell copied Twilight, big time.
I felt like I was being punched every word I read But I hate not finishing books, so I finished it.
When I was done I was as happy and carefree as vamps in a car with Starbucks
I was captured on the first page. I don't do spoilers in my reviews and, in fact, I don't generally do lengthy reviews either. Amber's humor and her way of dealing with a " boring" housekeeping job immediately pulled me in. I was there with her, readily willing to fight alongside the heroine. Her character is just refreshing. Forget typical love romances where the heroine gets all wobbly and weak. Forget long drawn out plots or uninteresting characters. A job from hell was a mystery. Every time I thought I had some small piece of it figured out, it would all get twisted around all over again. There was always a new curve-ball being thrown, and a new discovery being unveiled. The ending was jaw dropping. There is nothing predictable here. I loved that my mind got some workout. Would I recommend it? Yes, without one single doubt. You will love it and for a 99 cent book, I honestly don't think anyone can go wrong.
Got this for a Euro not expecting much and was really surprised how much I liked it. It was a bit slow to begin with all the characters being introduced but once I got past chapter 4 I couldn't put it down. There's something happening in every chapter! I really liked how the Shadow world was created and the novelty of the characters with the vampires being able to teleport to places and the hint at all the things the Shadows do like shamanism and voodoo rituals. I felt a bit sorry for the Shadow girl, but at the same time I liked how the writer described everyone's motivations and why they acted the way they did. For fantasy, this actually had depth to it and I could really picture the characters. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
There is one thing I have to say about the ancient legends series: you can't trust any of the characters. There are so many twists in the books that it's best to read all of them in order and keep an open mind. Really, don't judge too early. Don't rate this book until you have read at least the second one too.
A job from hell is sort of the beginning- the prelude. The REAL action starts with the next book and WOW it really picks up! You really get sucked in. You think Kieran is hot? Wait till you meet Thrain. [image error]
You think Amber is funny ? Cass proves to be actually more mature than Amber and more funny. You liked Aidan? If you care to read the other books, you will find he is not the "nice" guy everyone thinks him to be. You think Devon is a bad guy? You should read how he and Amber gets intimate in the sequel, dead and beyond. [image error]
All I am saying is: When I finished a job from hell, I was under the impression I knew everyone BUT A LOT is changing- including the writing, the romance, the passion...in the rest of the ancient legends books. A LOT is happening. And I feel that in order to rate this book, the first 3 books have to be read because I think the author purposely sets up a scenario to fool the readers.
And I LOVED THIS. I love the drama, relationship and all the hot stuff. I love how the author is able to make me laugh out loud. [image error]
All in all: I liked a job from hell a lot but I have to admit I did not like it as much as the rest of the series (beelzebub, voodoo kiss, dead and beyond). To be honest, when I finished this book, I gave it 3 stars and was not really ready for book 2 because I was disappointed that the next book starts with Cass. BUT I still gave it a try and I found out I judged wrongly. Amber was still the main character. The story continued, became more complex and really picked up after page 40. The writing got better and the characters become more mature There are a lot of hot scenes, and you see the relationship between Amber and Aidan evolving.
If I didn't know what a shadow was, I found out in the sequel.
It is about two people being stuck together for life and having no say in the matter. It was an afflicting read and I highly recommend you to give the next book a try.
A Job From Hell is a quick, fun read. I really enjoyed all of the different immortals thrown into the book. The story is told from two seperate POVs. Amber, the first POV, is half good and half bad for me. Not my favorite but definitely not the worst. She has a tendancy toward bitching and whining and groaning and complaining that drives me up the wall, but she is also flippin funny and sarcastic and I love love that about her. The other POV is Aidan, Ambers "bond mate". I don't really know yet how I feel about him. I think I am pretty neutral on the issue. There are several other characters that show up in the book, but the only 2 that are worth mentioning are Cass, Princess Hell, and Kieran, Aidans brother. There are both smart a@#es, and you just gotta love that.
Jayde Scott has a really good, fast paced writing style that kept me interested in the story. One minor downfall for me are the editing issues, but compared to a lot of the ebook writers out there, she is an editing saint. So, I won't take away from my rating for that with this book. All in all, it was a great time passer. I will definitely check out the rest of the series and any other book she throws out there.
I was really enthralled by this story and enjoyed it immensely. So would I recommend it: yes!!! Would I reread it: Yes, double yes!!!! The plot is fantastic, the writing beautiful, the characters very likable. I loved Cassandra more than Amber, but still i would not take stars off for that because i realize that that no two people are the same and what I find irresistible in one character, might not be someone's cup of tea. However I laughed a lot and I loved this series, and I will sure buy all other books too because I just love J.Scott's style of writing. For anyone who is not sure, I recommend to read the free sample chapters that are available on Amazon. They are super good!!!!
Overall: I wanted the book to go a certain way, it went another way, but it was still an entertaining (infuriating) ride at times.
I heard about this book about a year ago and it had always been on my mind. The cover was gorgeous, it was a fellow indie book and the description sounded awesome. Oooh, snarky girl takes a job as a housekeeper in the Scottish Highlands and falls in love with her mysterious boss. To me, this sounded like a wicked take on my fav book Jane Eyre and I was dying to see how it would all play out.
Well it started out excellent…
5 Stars!
We meet Amber, our protagonist, who isn’t your skinny bombshell, just a normal gal who needs to make some money before college. She’s witty, sarcastic, funny…awesome.
Then she’s dropped off at the ominous mansion, introduced to her hot boss and, well, how awesome is this going to be? I foresaw tons of sexual tension, intrigue, brooding moments and mystery.
Aaaaaaaand. There was none of that.
The book quickly lost steam and all plot and reasoning. It went from potentially subtle sexy times to just…just…I can’t even. But I’ll try.
Amber’s brother, Dallas, randomly shows up at the isolated mansion where she has just started working, saying he found a shack in the woods with a lot of expensive gemstones in it and he wants them both to rob the place and then live happily ever after on the money.
Got that?
So they do it, in the middle of the night. Her brother Dallas gets lost in the woods, she steals the gems, there’s some random person in the woods who is all “drop the backpack” and she doesn’t and runs and then later we find out that the gems were part of a Interracial Supernatural Race that happens every 500 years and that by finding the gemstones she’s now inherited a gift of…seeing ghosts?

And how do we know this? Because the book switches to the POV of Aidan, her boss. Um, slash Vampire. Because yes of course this book had to go there. Fucken vampires. ANYWAY the author does an excellent job of keeping the dual POVs very different – thankfully both characters have very distinct voices and Aidan is very believable. However, that doesn’t prevent me from not liking him. Especially when he reveals that he’s in love with Amber ever since he saw her walking through a crowd years ago and arranged it so she would be working for him and oh, she’s his mate and he’s going to make her love him and become a vampire and happily ever after.
Talk about insta-love. What’s worse is that we go back to Amber who “discovers” the truth about Aidan (via Cass, Satan’s literal daughter, who is actually a great character) and is all, “Well you’re right, he does tend to sleep a lot during the day so he must be a vampire.”…wuht? That’s all the convincing you needed?
- 1/2 star
Then, like next day or something, Aidan is kidnapped by some evil princess or something and tortured by Succubi and Amber decides to risk her life for him because he’s the love of her life. Forget insta-love, now we have…insta-sacrifice?
- 1/2 star
And so she strikes a deal with Aiden’s enemies, these Shadow people and they kidnap her and take her to this LOTR-type enclave in the mountains where she’s essentially held prisoner and will never escape. And all she can do is CRACK JOKES. Like, dude, you’re going to die but she’s all “No mints on the pillows? Even prison cells are nicer than this” and “can’t believe I’m going to die, totally not included in the job description” and suddenly she can’t take anything seriously. Meanwhile Aidan and his vamp brother are joking left and right and while it’s funny, I can’t help but stop taking this book seriously. It’s life or death and everyone is laughing? Well I’ll join in but don’t expect me to have any personal involvement with the fate of these characters.
ESPECIALLY when, later, Amber and Aidan have a “tender” scene where they talk about making their love work and she tells him, I’ll never become a vampire, I don’t want to, not gonna happen and then HE BITES HER. Oh, not to drain her blood but just so she’ll see he’s not some sort of monster that will rip her throat out. But biting her when she specifically told him not to? Yeah that’s totally cool.
-1 star
Then her brother shows up randomly and Aidan thinks the following things:
“Killing Amber’s brother was out of the question though. How could I persuade the in-laws that I was the right one for their daughter” – yeah, that’s totally why you shouldn’t kill her brother. What a swell guy you have there Amber.
“So Dallas still thought Amber was just the housekeeper. She hadn’t told her brother we were on the verge of dating? I shot her an irritated glance….Clare was right, Cameron (her ex) wasn’t forgotten yet, or why else would she not make our dating official?” UM WTF?! Maybe she hasn’t told him yet because she’s spent the last few days being held prisoner in the Scottish mountains by a Queen of Shadow People? You’re a 500 year old vampire and THIS IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN RIGHT NOW? I…I…
And so I reached a point, around 70% into the book, where I hated everyone. With Aidan becoming Count Douchenozzle and Amber getting demoted to Bella Swan indecisiveness. One minute she hates him, next minute she’s making out with him, next minute she hates him, next minute…you get the idea. And Aidan…what 500 yr old vampire says “you rock, babe” when they’ve recovered the most powerful spell book in the world?
And don’t even get me started on the friggin mess of an ending.
I know I sound really mad at this book…but it means I care. I care because the writing is really good. I really adore this author’s style, I really like her voice, everything is described perfectly, she’s funny, sure she overuses some phrases (lots of “moistened lips”) but I like her prose very much, even with the typos. I care because the characters have total potential and GAAAAAAH this could have been so brilliant. I wanted it to be my favorite book ever and it let me down!!
So, I dunno…check out this book if it piques your interest. If you’re a vampire fan or insta-love fan, you may love it. It DOES have a lot of great reviews. It certainly flows very well. If I give up on the characters then it’s pretty much over for me. But it might work for you so give it a shot.
As for me…I may still read the sequel…I may not…I may...
A Job From Hell is a fast paced, intriguing, paranormal thriller complete with richly-developed conflict, a fantastic plot, romance, mystery, humor, and amazing characters, loaded with exciting twists and turns at every angle. This author drew me into a completely different world of legend and myth, and I was completely fascinated and totally connected to every character, but especially Amber, a very likable, independent, and down to earth heroine. She never thought taking a summer temp position as a housekeeper would be dangerous, but when she is thrust into Aiden’s dangerous and secretive world, winning the coveted Prize, life will never be the same.
The taxi driver is beyond rattled when he has to drop off Amber in an isolated area at a beautiful and mysterious mansion in Scottland. He says the place is cursed. She needs the money, so she ignores his warning. Amber doesn't believe in stupid myths.
Her first day begins and she finds the house spotless. So she occupies herself by reading books in the library and snooping a little which leads to question after question. When she learns she has to cook, she is mortified. And when she makes her first meal for the hunky new boss, he turns up his nose at her dish. She wonders if it’s more than just her bad cooking. Less than a week into her new job, her brother Dallas stops by with a hair-brained idea of stealing a stash of jewels hidden in the woods. They’ll be rich beyond belief and all of their problems will melt away. Little does she know that touching those jewels will be the beginning of ALL of her problems. Amber throws the stones into her backpack when she realizes she is being stalked. She is chased and runs for her life. Her destiny has been set because she’s won first place in a paranormal race that happens every five hundred years. The Prize isn’t a trophy, but a gift she’d rather not have—a gift immortals would kill for: the power to travel to the otherworld and talk to the dead. And now Amber has a target on her back, and being human makes her easy prey. Immortals will hunt her down for the rest of her life. She’ll never be safe no matter where she goes.
But Aiden, her sexy boss, has a plan to save her life. But she must enter his dangerous world and sometimes, things aren’t what they seem. Getting to know him, his brother, and his friends only raises more questions. She doesn’t know who to trust or what to do. Her mind screams she should run for the nearest exit, but her heart holds her hostage. Aiden and she are bonded mates. She has awaited him unknowingly her entire life. Amber can’t explain it, but she feels the bond strongly. Aiden and Amber start to explore their feelings for one another. But is he just after her gift, too, like every other Immortal out there. Is his love a lie? Is she a pawn in his game? She has the gift he’d kill for—literally. To make matters worse, a beautiful, insane demi-goddess is in love with Aiden, and when she finds out Aiden has found his true mate, she adds to the mayhem by trying to kill Amber.
Aiden is thrown into an immortal dungeon to be tortured for centuries. Amber strikes a deal with Aiden’s enemy behind his back—a deal Aiden would never approve of—to save his life and rescue him. A deal written in blood, that she will honor, taking her away from Aiden and everyone she loves forever.
When she learns how dangerous Aiden really is, she questions his motives. Time is running out. The Immortals are closing in on her. There is nowhere to turn. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. Amber will NEVER be safe again…unless she risks her own life…and does something drastic….
I enjoyed this book immensely and the fantastic storyline will keep you guessing until the very end. The surprise ending came together in such an exciting way, you’re cheering and rooting for the heroes. On the last page you’re going to blink…and say….no way! This book can be enjoyed by young adults, as well as adults. Suspenseful, humorous, romantic, and above all, beautifully written and wonderfully told. This book did not disappoint and promises to be a paranormal favorite! I eagerly await the next book in this series!!!!!
