Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

Just a quick review for this one as it's a comic book and there isn't that much to say! All I can say is that I LOVED IT! It's just a blast, so much fun. Having seen the movie first it's hard not to picture Stephen King and Ted Danson etc in their respective roles.

My favourite story is probably The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, he's such a lunk-head. Least favourite... it's hard to choose one because I really did enjoy them all, but They're Creeping Up On You is the one I maybe loved the least?

The Creep is such a wonderful narrator, he had me laughing out loud several times. Creepshow is a fun way to pass an afternoon, and a nice addition to any King collection!

To me this "horror comic" is so childish and utterly stupid.
the first story was good all the rest are trash nuff said!
Note : this review used to be longer because i was mad thinking that Stephen king took this lightly, but as it turns out from conversations with A reader friend in L McCoy, i have learned that this is a tribute to older cheesier comics, i guess for king and his generation they would love these because it meant something to them as they read them growing up and when you are young, you probably wouldn't notice how cheesy some of the content that you read is, i know because i have been there, when i would read or watch something that i used to like when i was young and discover that its an absolute shit read or show honestly, but to others who feel nostalgic where these works reminds them of simpler times, or good memories, i don't really get emotional when it comes to that.

In the spirit of classic pulp horror comics, in the early 1980s Stephen King released Creepshow in print (and, with the help of zombie master, George Romero, on the screen). While it does have a bit of a dated, early 80s feel, it is still worth it for a few creepy scares!

The five stories in this collection are very quick hits. There is not a lot of time taken to flesh things out. Each story gets in and gets out . . . if there is backstory, it is covered in a few short panels. Because of this, it makes for a quick read whether you are just reading one story, or all of them at once.

The artwork is pretty good at reflecting the traditional pulp comic art. You would see something similar in old issues of Tales From the Crypt. Nothing too fancy, but the gore and horrors are perfectly balanced with a cartoonish feel. You will be both terrified and amused at the same time!

Graphic novel fans who also happen to be King fans, I will assume you have read this. And, if you have not, you have no reason not to hunt it down. It may be a bit harder to find than some of his other work, but I think it is worth the effort.

Believe it or not, the copy I read is a first edition my Dad bought back in 1981 when it first came out. It has been around for a while!

Stephen King and George Romero's ode to the old horror comics of the 1960's like Creepy and Eerie!. These are adaptations of the stories from the movie not the Stephen King short stories they were originally based on. Bernie Wrightson was the perfect choice to illustrate these. If you liked these, do yourself a favor and watch the movie. I've been chanting "I want my cake! I want my cake!" at every birthday party I've had since 1982. Fun fact: Stephen King plays Jordy in the movie.

I saw this movie some time ago and this comic pretty much is the movie, from what I remember. I don't know which came first, I thik the movie. I do remember seeing the Creepshow show they made on HBO later on thinking it was so scary.

Stephen has spoken about his love of reading these things when he was a kid, these comic horror type stories. This is his own. It's Schlocky and there is some gore to go around. This is full on gross, this is more emotional than graphic.

I have seen this and I knew it existed, but I haven't seen this anywhere. I found it at my library throught the ILL service and I was finally able to read it after all these years. One more Stephen work down. He should do a new, updated one.

The crypt keeper is the scariest thing about this. That puppet always gave me the creeps as a kid.

If you've ever seen the movie Creepshow, you know what this book contains. Its five stories are homages to EC comics. Stephen King handles the writing and Bernie Wrightson handles the art, apart from the Jack Kamen cover.

I was tempted to give this a four based on feelings of nostalgia for the movie but I ultimately decided on a three. It's a cool thing to have for a fan of the movie and the stories are 99% similar, owing to Bernie working from an older version of the screenplay. I love Bernie Wrightson but I don't think the stories made full use of his talent. The settings weren't shadowy enough and there weren't enough rotting corpses and monsters. It's like bringing a grenade launcher to a skeet shoot.

Ultimately, I think Creepshow has more value as a piece of movie memorabilia than it does an actual book. Three out of five stars.

THIS. WAS. BRILLIANT. I felt absolutely giddy with glee to finally have this as a part of my King collection and I swear I was dancing a little in my seat as I was reading because I was just enjoying it so damn much! The Creep is the BEST narrator ever, he actually made me laugh out loud more than once. And the stories themselves made my little horror loving heart so happy! These are quintessential 80s horror comics and I adored every second of every story. The illustrations are worth 5 stars just on their own, they are (and laugh at me all you want for using this word) RAD! If you’re a King fan or a horror fan of any sort, do yourself a favour a pick up this little gem!

I can always turn to this beloved adaptation of my favourite movie to give me such a big sense of comfort. I have re-read it many times over the years. I am a huge fan of horror anthologies and this is one of the greatest. Each tale has a great premise, but my two favourites are Father’s Day and The Crate. It works so well as both a comic and a movie, I adore both equally. If you’re a fan of Stephen King, or have seen the movie but not read the comic as so many people tell me, then you absolutely must. The illustrations are utter perfection.

Checkout the cool cover art horror lovers!

This creepy graphic comic book is based on the 1982 horror anthology and cult classic film Night of the Living Dead....and gives us....five wonderfully dark and sinister stories.

Just a few words about each....don't want to spoil your creepy fun!

No. 1: Father's Day (5 Stars) ~~~ Happen to like decorated birthday cakes to celebrate this special day? I'd pass on this one....hehehe or should I say clakclakclak!

No. 2: The Lonesome Death Of Jordy Verrill (4.Stars) ~~~ Something very creepy and very green from out of the sky here. DO. NOT. TOUCH!

No. 3: The Crate (5 Stars) ~~~. Ok, you can go down the basement, just stay away from the box....unless, of course, your name is WILMAAAAA!

No. 4: Something To Tide You Over (5 Stars) ~~~ Yikes! Cruel and unusual punishment....you bet....but be wary....or you just might end up at the beach!

No. 5: They're Creeping Up On You (4 Stars) ~~~ Yep! Bugs....lots of bugs....and an old bugger too....Ewwwwww....they CAN hide anywhere!

OMGOSH, I love THE CREEP narrator AND the super creepy graphics AND the final words of No. 5...."Casablechha".... AND, of course, Stephen King!

How fun! Great Collection! Creep.Creep..Creepy...

P.S. (Looking forward to the movie....on its way....hope I can stomach No. 5.) And one final note: Checkout E. Lorn's review. I had the same problem with my Amazon order of this book. Returned the first one. (missing red ink all down binding) They sent another, much better, but not perfect. Called again, they refunded $ and told me to keep it.)

Well that was disturbing.

This graphic novel is a collection of 5 short stories, and I really enjoyed them all. I think first story (Father's Day) was my favorite, but last one (They’re Creeping Up On You) was one of the most disturbing stories I've ever read. No wonder I hate bugs. Nasty little suckers.

3 out of 5!

Fun to read during Halloween time for nostalgia reasons, but I just love the movie too much and prefer it over the graphic novel.

My main issue was the Creep inserting too much humor throughout. It would take me out of the story.

Still fun to check out if you enjoy graphic novels, though!

In the good old days before easily affordable VCRs, you saw a movie in the theater, and then it disappeared for years until a heavily sanitized version might appear on your TV screen. And, then it basically vanished forever.
Yeah, life pretty well sucked in those dark days before streaming.
So . . . imagine my delight when, after seeing this movie back in 1982, I found a comic book version of it available on the shelf of my local bookstore. Yes, children, I saw the movie in a cineplex attached to a mall, then walked over to the mall that was filled with actual stores (including TWO bookstores), and bought a book.
Well, maybe life didn't suck completely back then.

This is simply a cartoon version of the film. Though it doesn't skimp on the violence, the dialogue is taken nearly word-for-word from the movie. It does not have, however, the line uttered by Stephen King himself playing the lonesome Jordy Verrill. When he discovers the strange rock that's fallen from the sky, he touches it, gets slimy, and utters the words that set my boys to giggling when they saw the movie:
description
Yeah, for days afterward, they roamed about the house poking each other, and saying, "Meteor shit!"
Ah, memories!

Anyway, just know that there was once a time when you couldn't watch any movie you wanted any time you wanted, and if, HORRORS, that ever happens again, you can always turn to your old pal Books for entertainment. Honestly, seeing Fluffy, the toothy critter from The Crate whenever I want? Well, I guess life really doesn't suck that much after all.

What a brilliant little read. Every short story in this little graphic novel was really good fun. The illustrations were fantastic and I really have nothing bad to say about this. It doesn't quite get 5 stars because it didn't blow me away - and as always I wish it was longer.

I read this in one quick sitting on Halloween and it LOVED it.

A great throwback to horror comics of the 1960s and 70s, featuring a handful of spooky tales to give you the willies...Or at least, they might, if you haven't seen the film. Being someone that has, the endings weren't a real shocker, but they were still cheesy, horror fun with some of the best artwork from Bernie Wrightson. My favorite was probably the Crate.

Perfect reading for the month of October, kiddies (hee-hee-heee) 🎃 💀 🪦

A book I’ve wanted to read for years.

Finally got hold of a copy and devoured it in half an hour.

Each story hits the mark and the illustrations are the perfect style for the dark and twisted and deranged tales we consume!

Loved it!

(Also side note - I’m really enjoying Kings work being adapted into graphic novel - read Sleeping Beauties last year - might see if I can find a Dark Tower series of Graphic Novels - if there is such a thing!)

This book is less than 80 pages which is the cut off line for a book to be entered onto my all time book list. I do not really consider this to be a book at all. This is a mere 66 pages, which gets it a written review instead of a video review. This is graphic novel based on Stephen King’s screenplay for the movie Creepshow. The movie is much better than this book (if you could call it that). The five stories are much shorter with less detail and some changes have been made from the film; most notably They’re Creeping Up on You. The story does not really require much depth to be entertaining. It is striving to mimic old school horror comics of the ‘50s and ‘60s. It meets this goal. The book pales in comparison to the newer graphic novels based on King’s work i.e. The Dark Tower and The Stand, but I think those series had much more to work with starting out. A must read for King fans. I personally thought the stories from best to worst would go in this order:
1. Crate
2. Father’s Day
3. Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill
4. Ther’re Creeping Up on You
5. Something to Tide You Over

4 out of 5.

This was loads of fun. The stories are, of course, great, it’s King after all. But in graphic form, especially featuring art deliberately stylized to look like classic old school scary comics of the 1950s…that’s just excellent. These days there’s such a variety in art styles in comics and some of it is just…too minimal, too experimental, too unrealistic, too something, but this…this was just right. People looked like people, objects looked like objects, colors looked right…the entire thing had a terrific look to it. What a great read, really. It’s scary, it’s funny, it’s just the right kind of campy. It read quickly and entertained greatly. A lovely blend of three things both my fiancé and I adore (in different degrees) scary stories, art and graphic novels. So glad to have found it among our library’s random comic digital acquisitions. Recommended.

SUPER FAST REVIEW:
Cheesy, creepy fun.
So it’s not King’s best work. I don’t think it’s meant to be a masterpiece in literature though. This is a weird collection of 5 short stories in King’s tribute to old-school horror anthology comics.
Like many of those older horror anthologies, the stories inside may be cheesy and there are some miscellaneous issues to be had (examples: I found it predictable, I didn’t care about the characters, etc.) but it’s ultimately fun. We get 5 fun, pretty intense horror adventures and good art. This comic really brings the same feel the comics that this is a tribute to bring.
Normally I would be torn between a 3 or 4-star rating but since I can tell it’s meant to mostly be a tribute to some other kinda cheesy horror anthologies of the past and it greatly succeeded at that, I see no problem going for the full 4.

4/5
