Truth, Dare, Kiss, Promise #1

White Lies and Barefaced Truths

Rate this book
The Barnes & Noble Review
Cathy Hopkins, author of the bestselling Mates, Dates books, spins another first-rate series about good friends and figuring out relationships.

Named after the popular game, Truth or Dare begins with this first installment in which Cat realizes that she and her best friend, Becca, both have eyes for a hot guy named Ollie. What's more, Cat has been dating good-mannered Squidge for a while but isn't "mad" about him -- how can she be true to her own feelings but still keep Becca and Squidge as friends? For Cat, it's not easy to know when to speak the barefaced truth or to spare others' feelings, but after rumors begin to swirl about Cat and Ollie kissing on the beach, she knows she has to do something. Thankfully, Cat finds out that being honest and open may not be the worst thing after all.

With friends and situations that will resonate with girls, Truth or Dare #1 is a page-turner that will hook you from the start. Whether girls have been in Cat's situation or not, they'll understand her troubles and feelings, realizing that Hopkins delivers another of her non-preachy, positive message about life. A great complement to Mates, Dates that you'll want to check out. Shana Taylor

Sorry Cathy Hopkins, but this series just was not for me... which is strange really, considering the characters are the same age as the Mates Dates. I just didn't like this as much.

Main protagonist Cat was just a bit boring and silly (at one point she runs from her dad and stands on a beach iN THE RAIN ThINkINg AbOuT hOW sAd LifE iS) but at some points she was alright. Ollie was just exactly like Tony - the only difference being that I actually like Tony whereas with Ollie I felt you didn't know him as well - and Cat's bestie, Becca, just seemed awful and if I was Cat I would have sorted everything out 2924372509235 years before Cat did.

Typical teenager story about a 14 year old who has sooooooooooo many things going on... when in reality 14 year olds do nothing.

This was fun!

I really enjoyed the Mates, Dates series by the same author so I was excited to find something else by her.

This book was really good! I hope the rest of the series is just as fun. Definitely a quick read!

Very cute, light story. More realistic than the Gossip Girl or It Girl series. Relatable characters and situations. Eas, quick read.

Woow, buku ini lumayan "berat" dibanding seri yg lain. Well, emang ngga semua remaja seperti Cat. Baru saja ditinggal ibu, sulung dr tiga adek2 yg masih kecil plus dr keluarga biasa2 aja secara financial. Fortunately, dia punya sahabat2 yg okey banget!
Cat jadi berpikiran dewasa dan termasuk anak yg baik klo menurut aq. Becca jelas2 belum sedewasa itu. Lia mungkin tp dia anak borju. Klo soal jujur ngga jujur-nya aq setuju. Just being diplomatic ajah!
Sempat ikutan mau mewek di akhir2, pas Cat dipantai. And I don't like Cat's dad. And I prefer choose Squidge than Ollie.

A fun, flirty teen read with plenty of laughs and a dash of drama. When Shell faces a truth-or-dare challenge that pushes her into awkward situations (and closer to her crush), she learns that even small lies can spiral into big messes. Cathy Hopkins captures teen banter, friendship dynamics, and romantic mishaps in a way that feels light and effortlessly entertaining. Perfect for fans of quick, feel-good YA.

Nice story. Its all about friendship, father daughter relationship and how cat protect others feeling with her white lies. And until she makes confession to his father about the truths and that makes me touched and cried a little. 😂

I prayer Alvarez recommend the book "white lies and barefaced truths" on the basis of lying to protect your friendships.for example a young girl named cat who is 15 years old lies to her friends because she's afraid of losing her friendships and her relationship. This demonstrates that lying can cause a lot to happen. When trying to hide a secret from others cause your scared that it will hurt their feelings and hurt your relationship with that person. When I started the book I was thinking it's an ok kind of book. However after finishing some of the story, now I think that the book is really good. Personally I love the book because it explains a lot about things I've been through. Overall I would recommend the book because this book "white lies and barefaced truths " explains how to come forward about lying even if it hurts you and your relationship with others. In the story the book leaves us thinking about how cat fixed her problems with every relationship she has with others. Apon reflection, I realize that keeping a lie to keep from hurting yourself and your friends. In "white lies and barefaced truths " the author emphasizes how one person can fix something by just being true to there selves and there friendships. The focus of the literary work is to fix your problems instead of hiding them because your only hurting yourself way more then you think. Then and only the readers will be left thinking about how did lying get cat in trouble when only she was really trying to keep her friendship and her relationship between her and her friends. The whole reason why cat started to lie was cause she was afraid of losing her friends and their trust.

Cathy Hopkins, known for her Mates, Dates ... stories, begins a new Truth or Dare series with White Lies and Barefaced Truths. A few days before school starts, Cat and her friends play one of their favorite games, 'Truth, Dare, Kiss, or Promise'. Cat is dared to talk to Ollie Axford, the gorgeous son of an American rock star (she secretly has a crush on him).

The problem is, Cat's best friend Becca also has a crush on Ollie, and Becca wants an introduction. When Cat does meet Ollie, the two really hit it off. Cat knows Becca won't understand ... and neither will Squidge, Cat's longtime boyfriend. As the school year gets underway, Cat gives a lot of thought to truth. She keeps a log of how many lies she tells, and then tries to be completely truthful - with mixed results. How much of the truth does she owe to her friends? At what cost to them and to herself? The premise is interesting (and provides food for thought) and the story is engaging. Cat is a very sympathetic character, and you can't help but root for her to work through problems and misunderstandings.

This new series is off to an excellent start. The characters are multidimensional, and the plot moves at a quick pace. The author adds just the right amount of humor to keep the story light, yet the tone remains thoughtful. And although White Lies and Barefaced Truths is set in England, readers everywhere can relate to these teens and their struggles, which are universal.

Cat, the protagonist of the story, is facing some major issues. She have a boyfriend, named Squidge, but she's long over him. However, she couldn't find a way to break up with him. They had been together for really long and he really love her. Another problem she's facing, which connects to the first one, is she liked someone else. This guy name Ollie and Cat's friend, Becca, also liked him. How can she ever find a way to clear everything up?
The reason why I chose to read this book is because I forgot what white lie means and I want to be reminded. Because of my curiousity, I came upon this faulous book. This book keeps the reader interested by always starting off and ending with a hook that pulls us in. Sometimes, I don't regret being noisy.

I had never read this author before (she also writes Mates, Dates, and Inflatable Bras), so I didn't realize she was British. That threw me off a bit.

The store is of a girl, Cat, who has a boyfriend Squidge, who she might just want to break up with but doesn't know how. Her best friend, Becca, likes a boy named Ollie, who Cat also likes but doesn't want to hurt Becca. Can she learn to keep all her secrets safe?

I thought this was a little too much on the light and fluffy side for my taste. I'd say read about Georgia Nicholson or Mia Thermopolis first.

It was the very first book I ever read just for fun, and my obssesion for books started with it.

I was twelve years old when I read it and I absolutely loved it. Gosh, it was so good it even made me cry in the part where Cat is in the beach crying under the rain. Also, what I loved the most was that I could definetely relate to the main character.

Perhaps Hopkins' writing style is not the best ever and the book is a bit too short, but it's perfect for teeenage girls and, most of all, it's quite amusing for people of all ages. :)

This book was about Cat who likes a guy her best frind likes. This guy happens to have a reputation of being a heartbreaker and the brother of her new friend Lia(wait..im pretty sure that was her name) Also, Cat already has a boyfriend who she thinks of as a good friend and doesn't know how to break up with.

I thought this book was a bit shallow and predictable and typical but overall it was okay.

This book is about Cat, who has a boyfriend named Squidge. They have been together for really long. Cat doesn't like him anymore, but doesn't know how to break up with him. she asked her best friend, Becca to help her. Later on, she has a crush on Ollie and Becca loves him too. What do you think Cat will do?
I enjoyed reading this book. Right now i'm learning about different relationships in health and this is one of them. I get to make connections between these two books.

It was like the Dates, Mates books, which I loved. The characters were so similar though, that it was like reading the other series and not this one. I love Hopkins' writing because she really gets teen girls. It's a fun book to read! Oh and it's really cool how it takes place across the pond, so you get a sense of their culture a bit. All in all we're all teens and we go through the same problems, ok, maybe not the same, but pretty close. lol!

This book seems to me like your classic teenage clique which is why I liked it it was a simple read but yet very enjoyable. The main plot was simple and I really like the characters because they we not too exaggerated especially Cat as throughout this i thought she was quite level headed and generally just wanted to make everyone happy even if she made some mistakes along the way. I am definitely going to read the rest of the series

Good real-life discussions. Mates/Dates totally raised me and reading this book has reminded me that I was in good hands. Funny hearing girls say they're gong to call each other... Old school.
