I can’t review a book like this with a star rating, but I read it in a few hours and have already not smoked for a few hours. It’s a different way to look at it and I think it’s really helped.

I can't say enough about how wonderful this book is. I'm not a smoker but I work with smokers and others with unwanted habits plus have a few of my own. The proof will be in the pudding when I start to put these tactics to work for myself and my patients, but I read a LOT of material on cravings, addictions, habit forming and breaking, and I find her approach practical and already have had success using some of the techniques (favorite quote: "Understand that it's not your desire to smoke that makes you smoke. It's the inevitable consequence of your willingness to manage and accept the feeling of the desire." And she tells you how to go about that as well as assures you that the feeling will become much easier to reside alongside as time goes on. She herself is an ex-smoker who didn't gain weight. I can't wait to read her books on Overeating (my personal bugaboo).

Excellent book. Perfect size. This book ot only helped me stop smoking but helped me to take back control of my life and my happiness. You have to study the book for it to be successful, writing notes, drawing pictures and being actively engaged in the process. Most importantly, you can continue smoking whilst reading it. I actually had cigarettes on me during the process, occassionally liting up one and watching it burn to the end whilst internalizing Gillian's theories.

The writing is excellent and extremely relatable to anyone battling this addiction. The author recommends smoking throughout reading the book, which I did. I found her recommendation to embrace the desire/cravings (rather than fight them) unique and interesting. I intend to utilize this and the many other techniques to her process when I quit. Definitely recommend.

Turns out this is really about mindfulness and exercising the abilities of your prefrontal cortex. Good stuff.

Plus, I can't resist an English or Austrailian accent when listening to stuff on audio. Almost always makes it seem a million times more valuable. See Proust as read by John Rowe and Eckhart Tolle's audios.
