Good Faeries/Bad Faeries by Brian Froud is the faerie bible for any faeriephile. This is not just a catch phrase I'm throwing around. I have read and own hundreds of books on faeries, folklore, Celtic tradition, and the history of faeries throughout the world. Within the faerie lover's community it is widely known that this is the book of basic faerie lore with the most comprehensive selection of fae and the most accurately illustrated of all books on the subject.
To those of you, who can understand the perpetuation of the myth we call Santa Claus to alight the sparkle in a child's eye, I speak to you.
Brian Froud is widely known as one of the best artists of all things magical, but he is probably best known for his work with Jim Henson in creating the puppets for the movies Dark Crystal and the Labyrinth. His wife had help in designing Yoda from Star Wars and they both have many other books and works under their belt. But this book, by far, in my humble but accurate opinion, is the best. The art alone is worth the purchase price. Not cutesy or childish, the images are seductive, alluring, and sometimes dark and sinister. This is no child's book. He details the main species in the world of Fae, which are not, as many believe, just fairy's. Fae refers to all magical creatures from sprites to elves to goblins to trolls. It is informative and beautiful. It also has an unusual aspect not seen in many books, which is that the first half of the book, Good Faeries, takes up half the book, then, you must flip the book over and backwards, to read the second half, Bad Faeries. The picture in the middle of the book dividing the two is multi-faceted in that it has no top or bottom of the page. That is, the picture looks the same right side up or upside down.
There are many hidden gems in this book, both written and illustrated. And because it contains four of the characteristics of a classic (a source of the highest expertise of its field, unique, the magic factor, and a huge following) I will define it as such.

I first learned about this book three years ago, and although it's been on my list since then, I haven't gotten around to buying it until last week.
Wow - can I say that I regret not getting it sooner. The drawings are gorgeous - Brian Froud is, without a doubt, one of the most talented fantasy artists alive today. More than that, though, was that the information about faeries, from the introduction, to the picture captions, seemed to take on a life of their own. You can tell, just by skimming, that Froud truly put all his heart into this book.
It's usually hard for me to justify high price tags for quick reads - in this case, it took me three hours to finish. While I found this book at a half price deal, I would have been more than happy to pay the full price. Although you go through it fast, you will find yourself going back through it, over and over, studying the pictures, re-reading the captions and notes, and, in a way, building a relationship with these creatures.
Froud has a one of a kind style. It's almost as though his notes about faeries are field observations - musings that he recorded as he was surrounded by faeries. With this style, you feel as though you are reading a non-fiction - for fans of fantasy, you cannot go wrong with this book.
I look forward to reading more from Froud; his writings have taken me on a rare adventure, and he has gained a loyal reader out of me.

Brian Froud is a fascinating artist - with creatures from both the Dark Crystal and the Labyrinth to his credit the man has an incredible affinity for the weird and wonderful - this book is no exception.
So here you have two books in one in a back to back and reverse binding - you have two books (with similar introductions) in one. As the title states one is about good fairies and the other is about the bad.
Each have lengthy descriptions and explanations along with the trade mark illustrations. Some of beautiful with others are down right hideous the breath of the members of the Unseelie Court (to mention but one of the various groups represented) is staggering.
Yes the book is written in the style of a field guide or encyclopedia the amount of work that went in to the book is staggered and possible out weighs the work that went in to the actual art themselves.
If you are a fan on his work this book is a must and I certainly am. yes you can see hints of his other creations here however the mixture of text and art make this a distinctively unique experience.

I bought this book for my daughter because she is obsessed with fairies. Disney fairies, complete with pink tutus and silliness and ugh and all sorts of cotton candy pink feminine yargh. And can I say blech? I love fantasy and imagination and believing in things beyond our understanding, and I feel like my daughter has completely missed out on the mystical, fantastic, and even practical world that belief in fairies has consisted of throughout history.
This book was a great book to share with her. She loved the illustrations and was amazed by some of the descriptions. The writing is fairly brief but very creatively done, and some of the best traditional fairy stories are in there. King Arthur and Avalon get a mention, for example. I adored this volume and I am really glad that we own it. (Plus, my daughter tried to sneak it to school. Contraband fiction is always a win in my book.)

The five stars are for the superb and very atmospheric art that Mr Froud excels at. The downside is the writing left me feeling meh, but lets not dwell on that. GREAT artwork and worth every penny for that.

A beautiful book about faery lore. The artwork is fascinating, alluring and otherworldly. Brian Froud's artwork and description of magic and myths never ceases to amaze me and stir the imagination. I intend to buy more of his books.

A beautifully illustrated book that’s a delight to dip in and out of. Froud makes sure to explain that our ideas of good and bad don’t really apply to faeries. They all have both lightness and darkness. This grey area is exemplified in how the book can be turned upside down as you get towards the middle, and we can see the “other side”, so to speak, of a particular faerie. It’s always best to stay on a faerie’s good side, no matter how “good” they may appear.

Absolutely stunning and informative book about fairies! There are so many different kind of fairies both good and bad that I can’t imagine I’ll remember all of the different names and what they’re about. I am not very familiar with Brian Froud’s work but I would like to learn more about his work and see if he’s published anything else.
As for this book, it would be great to someday add this book to my collection!

I acquired this book while working at Barnes & Noble in college, had one of his posters hanging in my home for years and even considered inking his artwork on my body permanently. Froud is by far one of my favorite modern artists alongside HR Giger-
Froud's style defined what fairies look like in the general population's mind, in my opinion. If you were an 80's kid like me, his work with Jim Henson in The Labyrinth likely impacted your childhood in some special way.
So about this book- what is super special aside from the ample magical and breathtaking illustration with amazing detail, and lovely scribbled side notes detailing symantics about the faeries and other mythical realm creatures is that the book is reversable, when turned backwards or upside down-

Love Brian Froud: love, Love, LOVE !!! I have loved his art since I was a kid. I do not, however, have vast, knowledgeable, erudite things to say about this book.
But when I explore the art, I mutate internally into six-year-old Christine, plastic fairy wand in hand, commanding all of my tiny invisible subjects. Or sixteen-year-old Christine, cuddled on the sofa with three-year-old cousin Jessie, reading her stories of fairies and gnomes. These books are sentimental, the art is whimsical and somehow joyful.
If you are a fan of fantasy art, give them a try. This one is a fun dual-covered book: good fairies in one half, and flip the book over for bad fairies in the other half.

July 17, 2016I am someone who is often doodling creatures in the corners of my notepads. I feel the touch of magic return to these creations after reading this book. Froud encourages the reader not to see sketches as flat shapes, but rather as ethereal beings captured in time by those that have second sense to see them.

One of the best Froud books ever! I get so much inspiration for my poetry and art from this book. It is also a very good introduction to the world of the faeries, especially the bad/dark ones, for anyone just getting interested in who they are. Gorgeous art and insightful prose, a must have for any faerie buff.

Last book to review!
So I was worried about not having enough time to finish this so I probably rushed it a bit and tbh was a bit tiring to keep reading how her genuinely believed in these fairies like Logical Brain Shira is like I call BS the runs in my stockings develop cause... actually idk. Those things just rip.
And oh lol maybe it’s (one of these faeries I cant find now) who’s tricking me into thinking this is logical.
It’s totally not and that makes me sad cause I really really REALLY wanna see faeries.
Okay I’m batshit crazy okay but I kinda liked how he puts it in the intro and other places cause honestly I do believe there is something we can’t see can’t sense something otherworldly or supernatural, spiritual or Godly, and that can manifest itself as faeries or whatever
Also the illustrations lovely of course that’s why I have this out
God I am NOT good at drawing wings, I have this other fairy book with lovely dragonfly-esque wings, there are lovely statues I see, Brian Froud’s (how do I pronounce his last name??) kinda like butterfly or leaf based but then just STRANDS OF PURE LIGHT they just are....

Anyways so when I was way younger and my Bubby would come to visit us from Australia and she would bring presents!! And she once brought me Enid Blyton books (why am I listing these BECAUSE IM NOSTALGIC AND WANT TO OKAY ok I won’t list them all here cause that’s not relevant) like The Magical
Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair also there were these books of just short stories about random things like children or good turns XD fairies or the odd Greek myth actually when I read Percy Jackson I’m like wait some of this I recognize...
But anyways there was also this thin book about fairyland which I read over and over
And so like this book GOD SO NOSTALGIC cause the whole vibe of it I felt I was reading one of those Enid Blyton short stories that often ended like “and I know this is true for the birds have a nest at the bottom of my garden” or something always like I know this happened cause I met this character.
Also any time this mentioned brownies. Brownies always featured in her stories.

So I was worried about not having enough time to finish this so I probably rushed it a bit and tbh was a bit tiring to keep reading how her genuinely believed in these fairies like Logical Brain Shira is like I call BS the runs in my stockings develop cause... actually idk. Those things just rip.
And oh lol maybe it’s (one of these faeries I cant find now) who’s tricking me into thinking this is logical.
It’s totally not and that makes me sad cause I really really REALLY wanna see faeries.
Okay I’m batshit crazy okay but I kinda liked how he puts it in the intro and other places cause honestly I do believe there is something we can’t see can’t sense something otherworldly or supernatural, spiritual or Godly, and that can manifest itself as faeries or whatever
Also the illustrations lovely of course that’s why I have this out
God I am NOT good at drawing wings, I have this other fairy book with lovely dragonfly-esque wings, there are lovely statues I see, Brian Froud’s (how do I pronounce his last name??) kinda like butterfly or leaf based but then just STRANDS OF PURE LIGHT they just are....

Reading this and learning more about faeries, I kept thinking about Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince, now I’m super looking forward to the third book cause as I read this I kept finding creatures or elements she had included

Also I was just reviewing Little House which was MY FAVORITE SERIES as a child

Enid Blyton
So my sister she was into the boarding school series and before that Secret Seven and Famous Five and those mystery books
But me
Anyways so when I was way younger and my Bubby would come to visit us from Australia and she would bring presents!! And she once brought me Enid Blyton books (why am I listing these BECAUSE IM NOSTALGIC AND WANT TO OKAY ok I won’t list them all here cause that’s not relevant) like The Magical
Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair also there were these books of just short stories about random things like children or good turns XD fairies or the odd Greek myth actually when I read Percy Jackson I’m like wait some of this I recognize...
But anyways there was also this thin book about fairyland which I read over and over
And so like this book GOD SO NOSTALGIC cause the whole vibe of it I felt I was reading one of those Enid Blyton short stories that often ended like “and I know this is true for the birds have a nest at the bottom of my garden” or something always like I know this happened cause I met this character.
Also any time this mentioned brownies. Brownies always featured in her stories.
So many brownies.

Don’t like the use of the word slut
I was looking at the picture on the inside flap and I suddenly was like HE LOOKS LIKE THE YOUNG DWIGHT REPLACEMENT GUY FROM THE OFFICE am i the only one?
