Dinah Bucholz is the official author of The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook. Dinah was born to a large family and grew up in a small New York City suburb called Monsey. The most exciting things that happened in her childhood were getting her pony tail pulled by various brothers, also getting teased by the same, and enjoying spectacular good times and spectacular fights with her twin sisters.
Dinahs first experience with baking occurred when she received for her ninth birthday a toy mixer from her mom that actually worked. She mixed up a chocolate cake batter without following a recipe and then poured the brown glop into plastic bowls and set them in the oven. Thankfully, she forgot to turn the oven on.
Dinah went on to bake many more chocolate cakes and it wasnt long before she was making fine desserts and cooking delicious food had become a passion second only to eating it.
Today, Dinah lives in Philadelphia with her husband, and to the sorrow of her four children, no pets. She spends her time cooking and writing and wearing a professional-looking white chefs apron when she remembers to put it on."
The recipes in this book are for serious cooks and bakers. To be honest a little bit intimidating for someone who is terrible at both. It does a good job of explaining the techniques though and even giving advice on substitutes for hard to find ingredients. I also love how they give a short history on some of the dishes and always show where in the HP books they drew their ideas from.
The one big con for me was the negative tone in which they describe American's eating habits. I have no illusions that a good chunk of Americans have poor diets and eat way too much fast food. However, to sit there and say all we eat is burger, fries, pizza, and McDonalds is condescending and doesn't really take into account our nation's diversity and the types of food that diversity brings.
While some households may find it normal to eat fast food there are plenty out there that find the opposite true or that live vegetarian, organic, or vegan lifestyles.
I get the point the author/editors were making and maybe if they had backed it with some solid facts it would have more of a punch instead of just feeling like some terrible stereotypical overgeneralization of American eating habits.
Okay rant done.
Really though if you want to try some challenging, HP/very English dishes and desserts then I would definitely recommend this book.
Seems only potentially good for the Lemon Pop and Pumpkin Juice. From what I've seen from the full Unofficial HP Cookbook, (and of course Pinterest), these could definitely be better.
Never tried to make homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker but would love to give it a try after reading this book. Pumpkin juice recipe sounds interesting too.
A fun way to bring the book series alive for the kids (or kid at heart). Great for summer treats with a Harry Potter theme. Especially if you are going out to see the latest movie or planning on a visit to the theme park. Lots of good ideas but I think I am going to have to buy the full length version for some of my favorite treats from the books.
I only own (and love) The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook and was thrilled to find this mini book I can carry around with me on my iPod Touch. And it was FREE!
I'm making Triple Power Icy Lemon Pops this week and will make the Butterscotch Brew Slushies as soon as I have the ingredients on hand!
Such a cute little ebook. I always enjoy (free) recipe books, and I can't wait to give these summertime/Harry Potter themed recipes a try. Such great ideas! Would be great for a Harry Potter themed wedding or any other summer party.
This cookbook was only a 3 star for me. I do believe there is good information, substitutes and clear instructions. I feel this cookbook may be a little difficult if you don’t cook at least a little bit. I feel the recipes can be a little much for some and or they just appear to be a little overwhelming at times. There are quite a bit of desserts or was that just me? It’s good not horrible just maybe a little much at times but I do believe many of the recipes would be very good.
Honestly, I just did a quick flip through. There was some narrative on where the recipes came from and why they were included but I didn't read that. I mostly just looked at the recipes and honestly, most of them I wouldn't make and probably wouldn't eat.
Haven't tried any of the recipes as yet, but I'm glad there's a collated book of all my fav HP foods, recipes do look promising and do-able so will definitely try!
