Perhaps being born on Valentine’s Day was an omen that Susan Napier would become a romance writer. This New Zealand author has written over 30 Mills & Boon category romances since 1984. Napier and her husband Tony Potter met when they both worked at the Auckland Star newspaper. After they married, she left the newspaper to work for a film company where she learned the art of dialogue. After the birth of her sons, Simon and Ben, she was a freelance scriptwriter for documentaries. It was soon after that she decided to try her hand at writing the romance fiction she dearly loved.

She and her husband still live in the home they bought in Auckland shortly after their marriage.

I reviewed this earlier this year on Amazon:

Recently I decided to stop being a snob about Harlequin and try reading the books for myself. Resolving to start with the zenith (or nadir), the Presents line, I considered 2 possible methods of attack: a) pick up a book with the least cheesy title from the bookstore shelf and cringe at the checkout, or b) research reviews on Amazon and order 1 of the best rated. Having tried a) and slogged through a barely 2 star read, I was more than ready to try method b). What is all this leading up to? Mistress for a Weekend is not only 1 of the higher rated HP books, it fully deserves its high reputation. And I'm more than happy to find that, with careful selection, there are indeed great reads to be found in the HP line.

Blake and Nora are a wonderful couple, and their romance is steamy but sweet. She's a geeky, clumsy IT nerd - emotionally fragile after finding her boyfriend cheating with her roommate, but ballsy enough to splurge on designer shoes and go in search of a man to get the foul taste out of her mouth. She's endearing and no pushover, and she's not above using her clumsiness to put the moves on the hero.

He's the usual HP millionaire alpha male, but he's refreshingly non-jerky and non-too-arrogant. It's funny how his family are all union activists who look down on his capitalist ways. He's never cruel or abusive to Nora, even after she flees and leaves him high and dry, or even when he suspects her of setting him up and being an industrial spy. He's honest about his feelings too, but he's a strong and determined man don't get me wrong. He's not above "kidnapping" our heroine to suit his purposes.

The writing is of very high quality, with an endearing use of Britishisms like "lift" in place of "elevator". Someone needs to tell the author though that disorientated is not a word - the word is disoriented. The first 50 pages are 1 long verbal foreplay leading up to the first sexual encounter. It's a testimony to the writer's skill that it never drags or bores. The sex scenes are hot and steamy, although the staircase scene challenged my notions of plausibility and comfort :-)

In short, if you've always thought that the HP line contains only verbally abusive jerks and powerless TSTL heroines, then Mistress for a Weekend will totally change your opinion, as it did mine. And now I'm off to find more good reads!

Auckland, New Zealand’s Sky Tower
is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere.

description

★★★★★ LOVED this one. Auckland’ Sky Tower is where Nora Lang and Blake MacLeod meet for the first time. (BTW, Nora is afraid of heights and the restaurant at the top revolves! Not great for her equilibrium.)

Plus, I learned a new word in this book, and I like it!
           Concupiscence: strong sexual desire; lust.
Geez, put “smoldering” (or “smouldering” – as they spell it “down under”) in front of that and it is pretty H.O.T! Used in a sentence?
Nora blushed at the graphic evidence of the violent excitement, her flustered reaction turning his mockery into smouldering concupiscence.
Yes! This one worked for me. Let me tell you how Ms. Napier further set the scene.

One thing leads to another and the heroine, sweet-geek Nora, who is a little clumsy, pulls a Cinderella maneuver and leaves her shoe behind in a hotel room. This is a type of shoe that is NOT her normal conservative style. This little number is extremely high (to finally elevate her above her cheating boyfriend) and goes with a little black party dress. I had a hard time determining what the shoe would look like, so I put it to a POLL vote in the Harlequin Presents Readers Group . This shoe won:

black, sheer linen, peep-toe, Laboutin
       [image error]

Fast forward:

Blake MacLeod’s wine-red ‘96 TVR Cerbera with V-8 engine.

Yes, yes...

Click on the hyperlinked title for YouTube’s [image error] version of Ravel’s Pavane , the CD Blake puts on that causes Nora to fall asleep (thinking she’s on her way to work). **sigh**

Then she wakes up and the conversation is thus:
“Where exactly are we going, MacLeod?”
“Somewhere nice and secluded–”
“—where no one will hear me scream?” she concluded with acid sarcasm.
“Where you can take time out—relax and unwind in the peace and quiet of tranquil surrounding.” His deep voice mingled with the sexy growl of the car.
Yes! You guessed it. The Conniving Rat ! All with justification, of course. The following sight, while gorgeous, is not something to which a person with acrophobia wants to open their eyes.

Looking South over Karekare Beach.

They eventually arrive here, where Blake has a second home:

Yes, definitely a GoodRead! And fun! ☺

Cute story of a clumsy computer tech heroine who attends a high society party right after walking in on her fiancé cheating on her with her roommate. CEO hero is bored by the party and amuses himself by watching the “sparrow” heroine enter the party. Heroine ends up spilling her purse in front of the hero and later spilling her wine on him.

They end up in his hotel room, but when the hero decides to have a shower before the main event, heroine panics and leaves without saying goodbye. She inadvertently takes a computer disk of the hero’s before checking into a cheap motel and drinking vodka.

Hero thinks she’s stolen company secrets and finagled the whole meeting. Heroine tries to assert her innocence, but hero “kidnaps” her to his beach house with no phone.

That’s the set up and it’s really cute. The H/h have great chemistry and there is a lot of witty banter and droll narration. The only thing that bothered me was the heroine’s crappy behavior of just walking out without saying good bye and snooping on the hero’s computer disk. That’s not on.

I liked the hero and his mother and sister. It refreshing to see an alpha who has a good opinion of women and good relationships.

I wish the heroine had confronted her roommate and had stronger words for the cheating fiancé. No comeuppance at all. *sigh*

Nora ends up at a company cocktail party reeling from catching her roommate in the bathtub with her fiancee, Nora's fiancee to be exact. Ouch. Intelligent, freckles and a little on the gangly side Nora does not have much self-confidence in her attraction and finding her jerk of a fiancee in flagrante did not help.

Essentially, Mistress... is the story about the slow burn between Blake and Nora. Toss in some insta-lust, possible white collar espionage, and a smart hero, a sassy heroine who keeps him on his toes and you have another solid read by SN. It's not quite a screwball comedy, but almost. It falls nicely under rom-com.

Some parts of this were brilliant. Some not so much.

I liked: The clumsy heroine who remained clumsy throughout. So many times authors start with a clumsy character then conveniently forget about it after the "cute meet." Loved the fear of heights, how it added humor but also allowed the hero to show his considerate side. Liked the banter. The sex scenes were really hot and felt fresh.

I disliked that the whole book was about 3 or 4 really long scenes taking place over 3 days. After awhile it was hard to remember just how long they'd known each other and what day it was. Then at the end things started happening randomly in a rush. It seemed like the author had to wrap it up and just threw stuff together. Here again, I was flipping back to find out what day it was only now the days were rushing by with a definite lack of words like 'later that week.'

This felt like the beginning of a mainstream contemporary novel that needed another 150 pages to tell the rest of the story. Which novel I would have loved to read.

"Mistress for a Weekend" is the story of Nora and Blake.

Don't go by the cheesy title, this is actually a super fun read!

Our h Nora is a computer whiz, who finds her long time BF in the bathtub with her roommate. Utterly infuriated, she leaves the home in a little black dress, buys a pair of kickass heels and crashes a business party. There she meets Blake MacLeod, infamous womanizer and tycoon, and sparks fly! He whisks her away to his apartment, and gives her the O's of her life. Next morning she escapes, only for Blake to chase and kidnap her, whisking her away to a remote cabin as he fears she might have come across some important information that might cost Blake millions!!

Witty, charming and funny main leads with instant chemistry, wicked banter and loads of adorably awkward moments. We know the hero was smitten, and the heroine was so exasperated it legit made me smile when they fought. The sex was hot too!

Mistress for a Weekend by Susan Napier is one of those few books that I have left over from the author’s backlist of books which I have not read previously. Ms. Napier is a dying breed when it comes to romance authors. Even with books that did not turn out to be high in terms of rating, I have enjoyed the journey the main protagonists take towards their happily ever after, and I feel sad knowing that Ms. Napier stopped writing a couple of years ago for whichever reasons.

25 year old Eleanor Lang (Nora) is on the hunt for the most dangerous man in the room that she can find. Betrayed by the man that she has been with for the past five years, having been labeled as a bore, someone who lacks initiative in the bed and out of it, Nora is determined to forget all of that and move on as she sets eyes on 33 year old Blake MacLeod.

Blake is a business tycoon, who normally prefers sophisticated women that might challenge him in bed, but never out of it. That is how he prefers it, and it shocks him when his body reacts in a most primitive fashion when it comes to the woman who makes eye contact with him in a way that speaks volumes.

Needless to say, the one night stand is more than either Nora or Blake bargained for, a night that ends in a misunderstanding which makes Blake weary of all that is Nora and what she presents. Keeping Nora at his side until she gives up the information that he cannot possibly risk being leaked out, tests his self-control to its very limits, given how much he desires to possess Nora at all levels.

Blake was a delicious hero who unleashes his sexual magnetism in a way that leaves, not just Nora, wanting. I loved Blake and all that he was in the story. One might think that he would be a typical brooding alpha, but he is charming and also ruthless on a level that just adds to his appeal. Finding out his roots and where he comes from just adds to his appeal.

With Ms. Napier’s books, you never know what you will get. That is one of the main reasons why I remain a steadfast fan of her books even now. What may start out as a conventional romance is never just that. Ms. Napier always manages to advocate for equal rights, shedding light on the sexism of the workplace and more, without sounding preachy about it. That is where a lot of authors fail today – as if the author is up on a podium preaching to the lesser intellects on what is right and wrong.

Recommended for those who love a good category romance. Ms. Napier’s books is a wonderful place to indulge in!

Final Verdict: Susan Napier always manages to surprise readers with delicious twists and turns in her stories and Mistress for a Weekend is no exception to that rule!

Rating = 4/5

Well this was cute and fun, if misnamed. There was nothing mistressy about it, he hijacks her for a weekend, and fun shenanigans follow. Low angst, a clumsy and mouthy heroine, a hero that sneakily seduces her and comes with a big wacky family. Gotta have a lot of baggage for the long haul!

Sweet, enjoyable story about a klutzy, computer whizz heroine and a hot-shot tycoon. The banter between them was cute.

I loved the sense of retribution when she waltzed off with the hottest guy in the room after her rotten boyfriend cheated on her. Who wouldn't want to snag a dreamboat right in front of the betrayer's nose, to soothe their battered soul after that?

I would have given it more stars but a couple of things irked me. Hated that she invaded his privacy by looking into his computer disk. Bad enough that she made off with it, but worse that she deliberately opened it and nosed about.

Secondly, the romance wasn't all that plausible since it took place over three days. It didn't seem so much as love at first sight as lust at first sight. Not sure if there will be anything substantial to build a relationship on after the lust wears off and the novelty of being with someone so completely different fades.

But it was still a fun story.

This was a really funny romantic read by Susan Napier.
Stmargarets https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and AgentScully https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... have reviews with more details.
First up is our adorable, tall and lanky, clumsy heroine. She is a 25 year old computer nerd who has just caught her boyfriend of 5 years in the bathtub with her roommate. He has the decency to towel up and basically tell her if she wasn’t such a deadbeat in the sex department, then maybe things would have been different, but let’s still be friends.

The heroine leaves the flat to attend a party that both she and the om had been invited to.

While there she tries to blend in wearing a dress that is revealing yet not flattering to her slim more athletic build, she catches the eye of the H. She’s not his usual type, but he can’t stop watching her because she is the most interesting thing at the party. She first catches his eye with her obvious fear of heights(top floor of a revolving restaurant) has her gripping the nearest column.

Of course it doesn’t help when she causes the spillage of wine more than once…

Or dropping the contents of her purse with tampon rolling to the hero’s feet

When she “accidentally” spills wine on the Hero he takes her back to his room so he can clean up and they can have “dinner”. The hero uses his magical hands with a promise of “more where that came from”after a quick shower. Our h gets cold feet and leaves….unfortunately she leaves with one of the H’s computer discs with sensitive information on it. Basically the H hunts her down the next day and kidnaps her to his beautiful beach house because he can’t risk having any secrets get out. This is where most of the romance happens. I am skipping soooo much, but I know any review I do will not capture the sexual heat, mutual respect, and friendship developing between these two. My review will definitely not capture the funny moments. Our clumsy heroine keeps the story interesting. Let me clarify that she is clumsy, not ditzy.

Some of the funnier moments include…. When the H kidnaps her(she is unaware that she is being kidnapped) he goes back into her apartment to grab her some clothing(she thinks he is grabbing his cell phone, and she is too hung over in the car to care) One item he grabs, that comes up later in the sexiest scene in the book, is her cartoon bunny underwear. In the sexy scene she is wearing one of his dress shirts( I won’t say why, but at this point there has been no sex). She isn’t wearing a bra, but she is wearing her bunny panties.

.. Well, well...not as wicked as you pretend to be, are you...?’ He withdrew his hand to flip up the tail of the shirt and splay his hand over her exposed panties. ‘Why, it’s Mr Rabbit!’ he exclaimed in deep tones of fond recognition, smoothing the printed cotton fabric over the plump curve of her blushing bottom. ‘And look, there’s a Mrs Rabbit, too, both primly dressed in their Sunday best. But bunnies are no- torious for their lack of restraint. I wonder what naughtiness the pair of them get up to down here when the lights are out...’ He stroked with his finger where Nora knew no bunnies frolicked, and she jerked violently.

The scene involves running around the house where the h is finally caught on the stairs and they finally give into their passion. This scene rates high on the sexy scale! There is also a whole shirt destroying theme throughout the story that makes me lol.

Sadly, even though she gives the om some disparaging words, the now engaged roommate and om do not get a comeuppance. However, I think they will get their comeuppance later. I base this on a few tidbits hinted at by the h. First off, the om may think having sex in “unusual” places will make it better, but if you don’t know how to pleasure a gal in the bedroom, then sex in a bathtub, against a wall, or on the dining room table isn’t going to make it better for her. Plus, the h indicated that the om was lacking in places that the H definitely wasn’t. Since the h had only ever been with the om she had no idea what she was missing out on. In addition to this, the H is fabulously wealthy. The om often relied on the h to help him with the harder things in his job, something his new gal won’t be able to do for him. The h also wasn’t able to wear heels because the om was shorter and had an inferiority complex about it. So, if the om eventually marries his tart, I doubt it will be a forever thing. He will probably let himself go, and she will eventually seek out comforts elsewhere, because in physical attraction, she sounds like a 10 and he may be a 5 who isn’t even rich.

If you are looking for a story with mostly likable human beings, fun times, and low angst(you really won’t miss the angst with this one, and I am an angst junkie!) then this book is worth a try.

Very cute and fun story. Not a lot of substance to it, but not lots of unnecessary angst either. On the evening that Nora Lang find out her boyfriend is cheating on her, she meets the dangerously sexy Black MacLeod. To prove that she isn't the uptight and cold woman her boyfriend accused her of being she returns to Blake's room with him. Before they get down to serious business, however, she has a change of mind and run off, but not without accidentally taking something that Blake desperately needs back. This misunderstanding sets up a sexy and fast-paced romp between two very likeable characters.

Mistress for a weekend is Susan Napier’s 33rd romance novel. After making the dismaying discovery of her boyfriend and her flatmate together, Nora Lang needs distraction, preferably by a good-looking dangerous male. Enter Blake MacLeod, tycoon, trouble-shooter and playboy. She’s not his type, but somehow she gets under his skin. Nora is unable to fight her attraction for him, and somehow ends up at his coastal hideaway for a long weekend. Surprisingly, it takes these two quite a while to get into the real action, but when they do, some very hot sex scenes follow. An enjoyable romance with a Kiwi flavour.

This book was extremely similar to Devil to Pay, also by Susan Napier. Both, Nora a Cressida, were very clumsy and not the type of the men characters at all.
Both got accidentally business secrets that couldn't be public.
Both were kind of kidnapped by her men and in both this men told to their families that they gonna marry before telling to Nora or Cressie.
The main differences are two: this is more moder story with internet, cell phones and laptops. And also Nora had had a terrible break up that pushed to his arms. Cressida instead was very ill she she met Devlin...

2009 Review: My mom actually bought this book online even though I told her I had a million HP novels to choose from first. Well, I'm glad she bought it because this was a totally cute book! As mentioned in previous reviews I normally don't read new HP novels but this book was fast paced, cute and enjoyable. I can definitely re-read this book again. The previous reviewers (from Amazon) already stated that this book is two thumbs up and I can second that emotion!
