Fated Mates of the Zaarn #2

Taken by the Alien Rogue

Rate this book
The charming blue alien says I’m his. It’s got to be some kind of line. But how can I resist him… or his wicked tail?

HAZEL
I get lucky when horned blue aliens rescue me straight from cryo. So when I get the chance to use my communications skills to help save other human women, I jump on it.
It’s perfect. Except for him.

Of all the handsome devils, why did I get stuck alone on a mission with a heartbreaker? Especially one who keeps losing his shirt and carrying me everywhere.

Kirel is all smooth talk and easy charm. He claims I’m his fated mate. But I refuse to be fooled by a handsome face again, no matter how tempting his whole… package.

KIREL
I never met a computer system I couldn’t hack or a female I couldn’t tempt for a fling. But without a fated mate, all of it was flimsy and fleeting.

Until her. My soul’s breath. The one destined to be mine forever.

Hay-Zul is the puzzle I can’t figure out and the one I’m the most desperate to solve. I ache for her and her lush curves. When we go undercover to find more Hyoo-mon females, we pretend to be fated mates. But it’s not fake, and I’ll prove it to her.

Then I’ll take her as mine.

Taken by the Alien Rogue is a steamy alien romance featuring a dashing alien mercenary who hides his heart behind charm and a curvy heroine who needs to learn to trust again. Strap in for a fun ride filled with adventure, toe-curling steam, and a heartfelt HEA.

This is the second book in the series, and I’ll say again if you love Mass Effect: Andromeda pick this series up! It has mad Andromeda vibes and makes me want to play that game again every time I dive into these. This story is exactly what I look for in alien romance- lots of action, a slower burn, a MFC slow to trust and a Roguish MMC obsessed with her and determined to win her over, both slightly misguided by their past. PLUS SENTIENT ROBOT PUPPY PET!!!! I love pets in sci-fi! Gahhhh I loved this book so much.

I have never read a book with a linguist MFC and that was SO COOL and fascinating! I loved her anecdotes about language, and found myself geeking out about the little bits of info. Hazel was extremely relatable for me, with a shit ex that broke her trust. Her brain goes big nope at any traits in others that reminder her of said ex, no matter how much your body may be attracted to them. Her frustration with her body’s attraction when she didn’t want it was just such a relatable experience that we never talk about too!

I loved Kirel and his roguish personality, he wasn’t the typical rogue though, and when we find out why he is that way, omg 😭 my heart hurt for him and his past. Plus he’s a complete genius with computers and tech, which I also love!

The overarching story in this series in so FASCINATING, the Grug are kinda this borg-ish race, and I was so excited to find out more about them in this book, I’m totally hooked on the general story and can’t wait to see what happens next!

Alien-ness:👽👽👽🔘🔘(Knotting plus some interesting tail involvement in mating👀)
MC’s Together: 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂(together from the start basically)
Burn: 🔥🔥🔥🔘(first spicy scene around 44%)
Spicy: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🔘🔘 (I can’t completely remember, but around 3-4 full scenes I think?)
Sweetness:🧁🧁🧁🔘🔘(a nice level of sweetness)
Angst: 😈😈😈🔘🔘 (some angst, not a ton)
Action: 💥💥💥💥🔘 (a fair amount of action, I had trouble deciding between 3 or 4 💥)

Better than the first book.

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💙🩷💚❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️😮😋😀
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Hazel - Cara, from Claimed by the Alien Rogue was the only female with a translator chip and she went out the air-lock a few minutes ago. Hazel was a linguist and a coms specialist. So her training helped a bit since she was holed up in a cramped shuttle with some huge aliens until they docked with the large Zaarn ship. She had a bit of a crush on Kiril the huge Zaarn warrior. Hazel knew from Cara that the Zaarn were good aliens as opposed to the aliens who had kidnapped the three Cryopods from their ark ship and tried to sell Cara; Hazel and her friend Molly were lucky to be awakened from her cryo-stasis pod after all that hubbub.

The Hero: Kiril - he is a seven foot tall blue alien, built like an athlete and handsome to boot. He was a quiet male when he was around Hazel because the things he wanted to say to her had to be understood by her. He was a computer and tech wiz on the Zaarn ship, the Daredevil. His kind were banished from their home world if they didn’t find a mate by a certain age. They lived and worked in space and didn’t think they had any hope of ever finding a mate, until Gravin found Cara and knew immediately she was his mate. Kiril had a crush on Hazel and felt the mating pull toward her.

The Story: Hazel worried about what she would do now. Since Cara could fight and Molly was a pilot, they were set, but Hazel was a linguist in an alien world where everyone had translators. She was afraid because she knew if those in power didn’t find you useful, that you wouldn’t have a good time of it. Now that they were on the larger ship, she got her translator chip and was finally able to understand the Zaarnian males.

Of course Hazel had a past bad relationship, so even thought Kiril told her right away that she was his fated mate, she figured he just wanted her because she was one of the only women around and that if someone better came around, she would be dropped. I hate it when the heroine is a BBW, especially when their self-esteem is not great because of it. Hazel worried a lot about her weight. Especially after seeing pictures of the toned bodies of Zaarnian females.

I did end up liking this story better than the first book in this series. I liked the fact that they went on an adventure to try to rescue the rest of the human women on the ark ship. Kiril was perfect for this task since he would be able to hack into the Grug systems and find out where they had come across the ship. Hazel had to go with in order to provide access to the ship. Though I didn’t really understand that since obviously the Grug were able to access the ship and kidnap Hazel, Molly and Cara.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Tor Thom and Elle Sonali. Elle has a soft, feminine voice that sounds age appropriate for Hazel. I really like her voice, she is one of my favorite female narrators. Tor Thom is also very good. He has a super deep voice which is just perfect for a large alien male.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

“If they’re something you enjoy, I’ll get them for you.” His voice dropped to a suggestive register. “I am, after all, here for your every pleasure.” - Kirel to Hazel

After their rescue by Cara and Gravin, Mollie and Hazel are getting used to being on the Daredevil with the Zaarn sent to Roam. Sul and Kirel, respectively, realize they are their fated mates which is the beginning of their romance. Meanwhile, they want to find their original colony ship, and other women that might have been abducted by the treacherous Grug.

When I tell you this had me in a stranglehold for a week, I mean that in the best way possible. Am I a fan of this series? Yes, absolutely. I even have Zaarn mood lighting for reading this series and whenever we get a new release by this author. This was no exception but another amazing addition to the world of the Zaarn. Hazel, while being quite different from previous FMC’s we’ve seen in this series, also stands on her own, and lord these two had me emotional from the beginning to the end. Much like Uhura from Star Trek, you expect that a linguist/communications officer might not be that exciting, especially in a world with translators, and yet Hazel is pivotal in the plot and it’s easy to see that continuing as this series moves forward.

I also loved the cameo’s of characters from previous stories. That made my heart so freaking happy.

On the romance side of things, Kirel is a dirty talking flirt. In my notes I actually made reference to the line from Into the Woods, “I was raised to be charming, not sincere.” In Kirel’s case, he was raised to be charming, but he’s actually sincere. And that, that is just devastating.

My only question left is: is there a sign up list to be wrecked by a Zaarn? How do I get on it?

4.5⭐️ 3🌶️

Fast-paced and exciting, with dramatic twists, and a slow burn that was so worth the wait 🥵🪢💥 Kirel & Hazel make an excellent team as they try to hack enemy systems to track down the ARK-1.

I love this series and Kirel is solidly my favourite. A hunky, flirtatious computer geek with deep insecurities caused by familial and romantic rejection 🥺 I just wanted Hazel to give in ASAP and tell him he’s 100% good enough! His charm would’ve worked on me 🫦👌🏻

That said, I also applaud Hazel for not immediately falling for this handsome blue alien. Not knowing anything about fated mates and having no way to verify it, I’m sure it just sounded like a lot of pretty words.

They were really pretty words though - I am once again trying to convince my partner to solely refer to me as his “soul’s breath” 😍

These books are perfect little pick-me-ups! ❤️ Combining action and romance, with fun space pets, and cameos from previous couples - this series is one you do *knot* want to miss! 😉

Thanks to the author for the ARC - all opinions are my own.

Hazel was rescued in book one by Cara and friends and is attracted to Kirel. However, once they are able to understand each other, she is unsure if Kirel is just a charming playboy like her previous boyfriend on earth. Kirel has a reputation as being good with the ladies from book one. The book also advances the plot of trying to find the missing ARK 1 ship.
Although this book had more depth than book 1, it still felt rather superficial. Some of the main issues that kept them from being together from the beginning were never talked about as a couple. We get a little more background on Hazel than we did on Cara. The spice was also fun.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: mention of cheating and abduction

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5)
Trope: alien, fated mates
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

An awesome alien adventure story with some sweet and spicy smexy times! Smooth talker Kirel doesn’t understand why his fated mate Hazel doesn’t fall right in his arms when he’s never had this hard of a time in the past. But curvy girl Hazel has already fallen for a bait and switch in the past and she doesn’t plan on making that mistake again - attraction, or not. Cute read in the ongoing saga of the humans and the Zaarn in their attempt to fight the Grug and find the lost human ship. Can’t wait for the next one!

Another sweet installment to the series. I was worried all the characters would feel the same, but I shouldn’t have. Cara and Hazel were so different, though Gravin and Kirel did have a lot of personality similarities due to their home world abandonment issues.
The action was a little lacking in this one…I was really hoping to get a better look at the pleasure house. 😉
It was sweet and once again, these blue aliens know how to treat a woman.
I was hoping the Grug main hub would give Hazel some kind of powers after tearing her mind apart, but I guess not.
I can’t wait to see what happens when they finally find the Ark1.

So honestly I was already a huge fan of author Krista Luna - what’s not to love? She writes Orcs, Aliens, Fae, special peens and adorable pet companions! But I’m continuously impressed by the skill of her descriptions, now luckily she only describes certain things in such detail but honestly she paints such clear images it’s impressive.

This story follows Hazel (our plus sized and untrusting FMC) well she navigates life in an alien part of the universe and more importantly the alien concept of fated mates. Her MMC Kirel is a bit of a charmer which instantly puts Hazel on high alert. But, theres still a missing ship FILLED with human woman still missing.. can Hazel give in and trust Kirel so they can work together to find them?

🔥 “My dear mate, I would be more than happy to fulfill any fantasy you might have…”
~~~
Hazel is a linguist and a communications specialist. She’s brilliant, brave and feisty. And I couldn’t help but admire the strength of character she showed throughout the story. I also loved that she was not afraid to face any danger in order to find her fellow humans and her dedication to that mission. Hazel is one amazing woman and I loved her so, so much!
Kirel is a Zaarn tech wizard who can hack any system. He’s smart, honorable, confident, fiercely protective and patient. Even more, he’s irresistibly charming, flirtatious and quite the smooth-talker. I loved that Kirel could be playful and fun but also serious and dedicated when work needed to be done. And he could be quite full of himself but he also cared immensely for the others. Kirel is one phenomenal male and I adored everything about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Hazel and Kirel! From the moment they met, he knew she was his fated mate and he patiently waited for the moment when they could finally communicate. But when that happened, the last thing Mr. Suave expected was for the feisty female to be utterly resistant to his charms. Being burned before, it took some time for Hazel to learn to trust the smooth-talking warrior. And I adored Kirel for proving her time and time again that she’s more to him than just the only option and that he’s the right male for her. I just loved those two together and they were such an awesome team! Hazel and Kirel were absolutely perfect for each other and when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another, the passionate moments they shared were off-the-charts hot! Oh, I was all in for all the horns-steering, tail-vibrating, dirty-talking, knotty and naughty delight! And, finally.. The special gift Kirel made for Hazel and all the attention to detail he put into it… 🥺🥺🥺🫠🫠🫠
In addition, the storyline was spectacular! The dangerous and wild missions through the Grug facilities, pleasure houses and hidden strongholds in search for any information about ARK 1, kept me glued to the pages till the very end. And, holy spaceballs, everything that was discovered was mind-blowing! Even more, as I’m a sucker for alien pets, I couldn’t help but absolutely love Vree - the most adorable, excitable, smart, adventurous and lovable robot puppy in the whole Universe. And his rivalry with Space Kitty made me laugh so much!
Overall, Taken by the Alien Rogue is another thrilling, fun and smoking-hot addition to the series! It’s filled with danger, fast-paced action, humor, suspense, violence, twists, hot romance and phenomenal characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every page of it!
Enjoyable again. I think the amount of action in these may start to wear on me but for now, it's alright. This book had some mystery woven into it that I appreciated a lot and helped to balance out some of that constant action. The mystery in question has to do with the Grug, how they exist, and how they've managed to maintain control over the other races. It was both interesting to read and gave me hope about good changes to come for this world.
Kirel and Hazel were enjoyable. I think I liked Hazel a little bit more than Hazel because I can relate to a chubby girl trying her best better than a smarmasaur. That said, I was relieved that eventually Kirel not only explains why he kept trying so hard to be charming but relaxes to act more like himself. It took awhile to get there, though!
I also appreciated that even while Hazel mentioned some concerns (e.g. not wanting to appear out of breath compared to the other women), she and the book in general had a positive outlook on her size. Kirel certainly seemed to love it, the other women never mention it, and Hazel herself doesn't think of being physically fit as exclusive from being heavy:
"Say what you will about being in space, between all the adventures and marathon bouts of sex, I’d certainly stay in shape. I’d be big and beautiful and healthy and loved."
Yes, all at once!
I couldn't help but laugh at Hazel arguing her communications major made her special out of thousands of women on ARK 1. I am so sorry. Also a four year degree isn't specialized, at least it isn't today, so it sounded extra funny to me for her to keep stressing that she has specialized knowledge.
There was more unbelievable stuff in this one - namely the human pilot being put in charge of piloting a one of a kind stealth ship without knowing the alien language and having only shadowed the other pilots for a few days. Um what. I'm sure Mollie is amazing but that sounds really incredible and unnecessary given they had another alien pilot. Gravin chose not to go in order to stay with his mate Cara but he could have left her alone and prioritized their mission instead of leaving their safety to a human who was relying on memorizing unknown symbols on an unfamiliar alien ship. It made no sense.
3.25 stars for Hazel and Kirel’s action packed fated mates storyline 🛸🛸 we meet this couple in book one where Hazel is rescued and needs a translator to be able to communicate with the big horned alien man. Once they do connect Kirel’s charm is a HUGE turn off for Hazel 😅
Most of the angst in this storyline comes from Hazel not trusting Kirel’s intentions. But it definitely felt like this could’ve been avoided with actual COMMUNICATION from the comms and linguistic expert 🫠🫠🫠 I did like that both the heroine and hero were smart and supportive of one another interests. There’s plenty of comic relief from Vree, Kirel’s AI puppy too! However, there often felt like there was a forced disconnect between the hero and heroine. 😬
What I liked:
Alien romance🛸🛸
Fated mates💕
Lots of plot👏🏼👏🏼
Adventure and action🦾💪🏼
Vree and his competition with the Kreecat is super cute!
The tip of Kirel’s tail is basically a vibrator 😂😂
When they touch their foreheads. I love that this is intimacy for them. 🥰
Thicker than a snicker heroine
Accomplished and competent heroine
Smart hero
I loved that they covered the impact of language and how the grug use it as a form of control
Plot continuation from book 1
Kirel’s background with rejection and how his family wasn’t expecting him to not have a fated mate 🥲 so they weren’t prepared for him to be set out to roam.
Set up for future books.
Dual POV.
What I didn’t like:
The mating heat doesn’t happen til over 85%. The time it took felt forced and I feel like I would’ve felt more connected to this couple sooner if they hadn’t waited to take this step. 😬
Even though Hazel is a plus size heroine it didn’t feel like she was written by a plus size author. Hazel’s size is often referenced when discussing fatphobic experiences or comparing her to others. It’s not organic. At one point they’re on a literal desert biome and nothing plus size is really covered (chub rub, sweat, etc) 😐
The pacing felt slow at some points.
TLDR;
This is a good action packed sci-fi, fated mates, mars needs woman storyline. It’s an easy read and only 230 pages. Buuuut it wasn’t like the best sci fi romance I’ve read. I liked book 1 more.
This is book 2 and what a brilliant book it was the main character were perfect for each other and the other characters from the 1 book were all there as well which made this book a must read. Hazel is a human that left Earth in a spaceship called Ark 1 hoping to find a new planet to call home and her job was as a linguist and Communications specialist but they were taken by Evil aliens called the Grug who took them while in cryo sleep to be auctioned off but they were saved by Cara a human that was saved by her now mate Gravin and his crewman Kirel and Sul and now Hazel and Mollie want to save other and find Ark 1. Kirel is a Zaarn warrior and a tech wiz who is apart of the mercenaries on board the Daredevil and are now fighting against the Grug who have stolen human females one of which was his fated mate his Souls breath Hazel but she keeps pushing him away and he doesn’t know why but he will fight to win her over but for now they must work together as pretend fated mates to infuriate the Grug network system and find the others. The more she learn about Kiel and his robot friend Vree she start to change her mind and knows he is nothing like he ex and wonders if they can have a future together and finally trust the smooth talking alien. There was danger, suspense, action, wild mission, hot and steamy scenes and let’s not for get about Vree Kirels mechanical robot I want one so bad and his rivalry with Cara’s space kitty was a fantastic addition to the great storyline. There is so much more going on in this book and it was a thrilling ride and I look forward to the next one in the series. Brilliant book and a definite must read.
Seriously love me a nerdy alien babe
Okay I’m officially obsessed with these blue boys 🥰 Kirel was so freakin sweet even if he was a bit of an idiot when it came to all the showing off and “turning up the charm”, but boy did it come from some trauma 🥺 I think that’s a huge part of their appeal to me though, these guys have been through some rough stuff and yet they still are extremely sweet and extremely grateful to/for their mates. That Kirel is a super smart hacker in addition to how awesome the males appear to be over all was *chefs kiss* 😘
The fact that the ladies are all STEM and space-ready is a huge bonus to me too. I get a little tired of the unprepared, mostly useless heroine thing; I love that so far they’ve all had their strengths that have come in handy. But I think Hazel is my favorite so far, since she’s incredibly relatable as a fellow fluffy babe AND she isn’t kicking @$$ and taking names like Cara was haha.
Stellar characters aside I really like that there’s a fast undercurrent of action throughout the entire story, and the series, so despite all the cute, sweet, and eventually spicy, there are no lulls in the story. It’s REALLY hard to put these books down, Krista really knows what she’s doing!!
Also I am completely in love with these alien pets 🤩 I’m really hoping they get more screen time in the future! And I wouldn’t complain if there were more pets later too 🤭
🌌Trope: Fated mates/ Found Family
📖Story: I love the balance of both action and spice. Gotta love the action and the thrill. A solid story.
💦Spice: Not to spoil too much but it involves a built-in vibrating tail & heat lubes. Keril knows how to use it and Hazel knows how to enjoy it. 😏🔥🤤
🐕 : I love how each story has its special pets. In this book, it's Vree, a puppy bot programmed by Keril. A very smart one too.
I will drop some snacks and morsels because I'm struggling to write a review without spoiling too much.
Hazel is amazing; her character is strong and I can tell she'll do great with her speciality in the upcoming book. She will contribute a great change alongside Keril.
Her character shows that strength doesn't necessarily mean you gotta be a badass in physical fights.
Keril will charm you but will also make you cry. When I get to read the part about why he was determined to be better, that broke me down.
The way he wins Hazel's affection, the way he built her a special gift on the ceiling inspired by Hazel's freckles... god! that was
one of the best grand gestures I've read in a book.
And Vree?! I'm looking forward to how much personality he will develop. I'm pretty sure I will be seeing him again.
Because according to Vree, He can do a loooot that other pets cannot!
Here's another book that proves why aliens do it better!
Hazel, the female human lead and linguistics/communications expert, is in the company of Kirel, the male alien lead and technology expert, and his companions because she was rescued from another alien species who thought humans were pets. Kirel knows she’s his fated mate but Hazel thinks his charm is false because of her past and doesn’t want to believe him. As they work together, with the rest of Kirel’s team, to locate the rest of the ship of women in cryostasis, Hazel realises that Kirel is charming as a cover for his own pain of being exiled from his planet because his fated mate wasn’t there…
This story is dual POV, well written, and a gorgeous, steamy sweet, adventure romance. I empathised with Hazel’s initial reluctance to engage with a charming partner. I appreciated Kirel’s patience and willingness to wait. I enjoyed his efforts to engage Hazel where she was at and to work towards his longterm goal. I enjoyed the overarching plot development - it’s interesting and fun. I enjoyed the secondary character integration and found the pet adorable. Whilst this story is part of a series, it does stand alone, though the overarching plot is best enjoyed in order.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
Hazel found herself squeezed next to some enormous aliens until the Zaarn spaceship docked. She had a crush on Kiril, a tall Zaarn warrior. Her friend Cara had told her that the Zaarn were friendly aliens, unlike the ones who had abducted three cryo pods from the Ark ship.
Hazel felt anxious about her future. In a foreign world where translators were common, she worked as a linguist. Her main concern was that if she wasn’t seen as useful, she would struggle to find her place. Once she received her translator chip, she would finally be able to understand Zaarnian males.
Kiril is seven feet tall, athletic, and handsome. Members of his race face banishment from their home world if they do not find a mate by a certain age. He serves on a Zaarn ship called the Daredevil, where he is recognized as a genius in computers and technology.
They live and work in space without any hope of finding a partner. That is until Gravin discovers that Cara is his mate. Kiril feels a strong attraction to Hazel and senses that she is his mate. She doubts Kiril's claim that she is his fated mate and worries that he might only be interested in her because she is one of the few available women.
Dirty Talking aliens, tail play, and knotting – oh my! Krista Luna’s books get better and better. Her writing style is always perfect with the most interesting characters. I love a steamy romance with a dirty-talking man who has a naughty side. Krista takes that and add horns, a tail, and knotting in a galaxy far far away. Oh, be still my naughty but nerdy heart! I especially love the FMC in this one. She’s uniquely strong-willed and fearless. She really is the perfect fit for Kirel, who is equally as strong and determined. They’re both confident, honorable, and protective. The push, pull, and passion between these two is out of this world. (See what I did there) The way they both rush into to danger with an ‘I’ve got this’ attitude was exhilarating. And let’s not forget the fun alien pets! [Insert geeky squeal here.] This book has everything from danger and adventure to heartfelt moments and a destined love. It had the perfect amount suspense and romance. I loved every moment of it. Thank you to the author for gifting me this romantic adventure in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this story. Krista continues to build her world and add characters with so much depth that it pulls the reader in. It is fun to be with previous couples and learn more of their lives. This story continues with the Zaarn that are looking for their mates, and there is hope. There is hope they won't be alone forever- that they too will find their Soul's Breath
Kirel was told he would find his mate by his parents, for years. But when he turned 18 with no mate he did the speed dating route till he turned 20. Then he had to leave the planet and his disappointed family.
Hazel was taken from ARC 1 by aliens while in cryo. The Zaarn rescued her and she meets Kirel. A smooth talking and charming alien that Hazel doesn't trust.
With numerous plot twists, the Grug, danger, adventure, Vree, and so much more, our author brings her reader into her story and you won't want to leave. But dang, this story does end- too soon. But there is a HEA and the promise of more absorbing tales ( tails) to come.
4.5/5
The absolute hold this series has on me now is wild! I can't get enough of these Zaarn males. And I would love to know where I can get one for myself.😉 I mean this series has everything that makes a good book. Excellent world-building. Check. Interesting characters. Check. Fantastic writing. Check. The perfect amounts of romance, angst, and spice. Check, check, and double-check. This is must read series if you are looking for a good alien romance. This is book two of The Fated Mates of The Zaarn and our main characters are Hazel and Kirel. Hazel is beautiful, funny, and smart, but she's also a little skeptical about the smooth-talking Kirel who says he wants her. She isn't sure she can trust her feelings for him, she's been burned in the past by guys like him. It's going to take more than a few good lines and a pretty face to convince her he is all in. Kirel is smart, probably the best hacker in the galaxy but he can't seem to crack the code of wooing Hazel, the stunning and intelligent human he's desperate for. He's never had a problem with the ladies but Hazel isn't like the others, she is his fated mate and he's determined to make her see she's the only one for him. But Kirel’s going to have to be more than a smooth talker if he wants to win her over. If he thought it would be easy he was wrong, not only does he have to win her over but now he has to keep her safe, as they go undercover on a dangerous mission. He's ready to lay down his life if he has to. Hazel isn't sure how she's supposed to keep her distance from him and keep her feelings at bay when they're forced together. Going undercover as mates to complete a mission isn't exactly what she had in mind when she planned to avoid him but now she's stuck and she has to rely more than ever on this smooth-talking male. The risks are high but so are the rewards. Hazel and Kirel are in for the adventure of a lifetime but will they make it out unscathed?
Hazel is the communications officer for the ARK 1, a human exploratory vessel looking for a viable alternative to a failing Earth. Hijacked by the powerful Grug aliens, who see humans as non-sentient pets, Hazel and several of her cohort are rescued by males from Zaarn, who have been sent to Roam space since they have not found their fated mates.
Kirel knows he has found his fated mate in Hazel, but doesn't know how to convince her. Hazel is put off by Kirel when he ramps up the charm, just like her player ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. Will they be able to get past the superficial and find love?
This is the second book in this series that has strong, intelligent, brave main characters. There is great world building of this alien universe. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this series!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
Deeper into the lore
In book two we really take a dive into the world building of this series, this time through the eyes of Kirel and Hazel. Excitement and adventure levels skyrocket, as Kirel takes his fated mate to hack their way into enemy territory. Maybe it's my linguistics background, but I really connected with Hazel and her methods of understanding the power language holds over societal norms as well as freedom. I'm so curious to find out what else Hazel has discovered.
In the meantime we learn more about the secretive Grug race, in addition to the capabilities of the Zaarn AND the humans. We also get a front-row seat to watching jaded Hazel connect with her zealous flirt of a mate, even though she's not sure about Kirel's insistence that fated mates are real. She's understandably guarded with the male and their character growth was excellent. The new sidekicks are pretty cool, too. Four stars.
This is book 2 in this series, and the plot thickens.
Kirel and Hazel were gorgeous characters. They spent the first few days since meeting each other unable to communicate. When they are finally able to talk, things don’t go the way either expected. Hazel has been looking forward to getting to know the real Kirel, but since he was expecting his fated mate to be as immediately into him as he was her, she ends up just thinking he’s a total player. And she has been there, done that, and is not interested in a repeat.
But the group is now on a mission to find the human ship and the rest of their fellow passengers. So a bit of time and close proximity means these two begin to find each other.
This story was sweet and steamy, and there’s also an overarching story developing that I’m very interested in following. Looking forward to the next one.
Hang on to your horses, this is such a fabulous read! Kirel, when it comes to his job, is focused, honourable and dedicated which is good considering he is not only a tech wizard but an excellent hacker. He is also “that guy”, the one that all the girls like and all the guys want to be like. He is flirty, fun and could charm his way in anywhere. That is until he comes up against his mate where he somehow manages to lose his bravado and confidence, which truth be told is delicious. Hazel is more than capable herself as she is both a linguist and a communications specialist. She is more than willing to put herself on the line to ensure the safety of the other humans. She is compassionate, kind, competent and not afraid to stand up for herself. If she can survive being fake mated to Kirel then she can survive anything, right??!!
"“It’s my secret body!” Vree answered, running in circles around my ankles."
Hazel wasn't expecting any of what she's gotten when she woke from cryo, add to that the emotional baggage she thought she left behind on Earth and she's trying to find her footing in this new, alien, life.
Kirel knows Hazel is his fated mate, and he's going to be so charming, so wonderful she won't find a single reason to reject him... he's had enough rejection to last a lifetime.
This kindle unlimited book has some interesting world building, scene stealing pets, and does a great job of reminding us that while we have to learn from our pasts, we also have to give our present a fair chance... something that can feel like walking a tightrope as we try and avoid getting hurt or repeating past mistakes just because we want to take a chance.
More Adventure
This was more like a 3.5 star book, mainly because of the FMC. I didn't care for Hazel. She was so insecure and have lashed out at poor Zirel. After all she had been through getting kidnapped by aliens and then rescued by a n human and more aliens and yet she keeps thinking about a guy from college.
Zirel was a hurt soul who put up a good front. He, like so many of his brethren, felt the ache of not having a mate. He also had the hurt of disappointing his parents and having to leave them.
This book continues the adventure of trying to find Ark1, with the thousand of other female humans. There's fights and hiding out and space zip lines.
I can't wait to see how much closer they get to finding ark 1, in the next book. I hope by the end of the series, the Zaarn all have mates with the humans.
Space Adventure with Romance
This second book in the Fated Mates of Zaarn is a fun read full of adventure.
Hazel was rescued in Book 1 of the series and she was unable to communicate with any of the alien rescuers until she had a translator chip implanted. The linguistics expert was challenged with not being able to communicate. I loved how the author tied Hazel’s unique talents into the story.
Kirel is a sexy Zaarn warrior/computer coding genius and he knew the moment he saw Hazel she was his fated mate. He is one of thousands of Zaarn males exiled from his home planet for not finding his fated mate. He is focused on doing whatever he needs to do to win Hazel’s heart.
Their adventure captured my interest and has me excited for the series to continue as the Zaarn’s and the human women they rescued search for the Earth spaceship and the other human women.
Absolutely loved the story. Kirel and Hazel both felt the relationship from the beginning. Both need time to get to know each other and the difference in their culture. Kirel knows right away that Hazel is his fated mate, "He found his soul's breath." Hazel is more guarded as her ex boyfriend shredded her heart. Kirel finds that he has to be patient with Hazel and let her come to the same fated mate conclusion that he has. The story has suspense, danger, fun, humor, violence, action, heat and filthy talking charmer. I loved Vree, Kirel's mechanical robot. I enjoyed this so much and can't wait till the next story. Highly recommend.
