With this story we see the same brilliant storytelling and captivating writing that we`ve come to know and love from York. This story is uniquely exciting with a well-developed plotline that keeps you on your toes and guessing. Although this story is quite fast paced, it`s never rushed. York has a well put together world of the supernatural that she presents gradually to the audience. Her descriptions vary from dark to light, the contrast highlighting the battle of `good vs evil ‘going on within the story.

York has created a host of well-developed and unique characters to carry this story forwards. You get to know them quite well and form intense relationships with the major characters in the tale. Some you will love, others you will hate, some you will root for, and some against. There is a character for everyone to identify with in this tale. The character development in this story is also quite unique in that there is no middle ground. The characters are firmly on one side or the other.

Overall, this was a brilliant story that could easily be read as a standalone or as part of the Protectorate series. It was a quick yet enjoyable read.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book uses a good trope of an evil vampire trying to create a follower, defying the powers that be, and fighting a rule-abiding enforcer.

Vlas, an evil vampire who wants to control humanity and rule vampires has searched for a scientific human to turn to a vampire and control. This human-turned vampire can then use their scientific skills to cure humanity of all diseases, creating a perfect stable of food for Vlas and his vampire followers. He also plans on making the woman he turns into his consort. Vlas searched until he found a human suited to his needs, one without family or friends to miss her when she was turned. He settles on Amber Black, a 22 year old who is just getting her PhD in microbiology. She is very smart, has doubled up on her classes to graduate so early, is beautiful, and has multiple fourth degree belts in 3 different martial arts, as well as being amazing at kickboxing. Vlas attacks her on campus 2 days before she is to defend her thesis to get her PhD. He drinks her blood then injects her with his venom, starting the turn to vampire. He will need to inject her a second time with his venom, in 1-2 weeks, or she will die in terrible pain without completing the turn to full vampire. Vlas is astonished by how strong she is a vampire almost immediately upon the start of her turning. She experiences the improvements of starting the change to vampire much more rapidly than usually occurs.

Maverick is a by-the-rules vampire who works for the Protectorate. The Protectorate polices all of the paranormal creatures in the world, including vampires, witches and warlocks, werewolves, and fairies. The Protectorate keeps the humans from findings out about all the supernatural creatures living around them, and keeps everyone safe. The Protectorate mandates that vampires exist on Synth, which is synthetic blood, rather than feeding on and killing humans. This synthetic blood also gives some immunity against sunlight. Maverisk is busy getting supplies for casting out a demon from a person when he stumbles across a rogue vampire (Vlas) turning a human (Amber). The Protectorate gives him the job of tracking down the rogue vampire and bringing in the newly partially turned vampire for monitoring.

Amber is overcome by her newly awakened vampire lust when Maverick comes to her apartment. She attacks him as soon as he comes through the door, and they begin to have sex like rabbits. The Protectorate wants Maverick and their other enforcers to remain celebate, and certainly not to get involved with other paranormal creatures. Maverick explains to Amber about the Protectorate, and how what Vlas is doing is against the rules. Over the course of the next week, Amber and Maverick fall in love, and continue to have unsanctioned sex with great frequency. Maverick refuses to bring Amber in to the Protectorate offices to be monitored directly, and so his handler instructs Maverick to draw blood and transmit the results to the Protectorate every 15 minutes. Amber becomes increasingly and uncharacteristically unreasonably enraged over these blood draws. In 2 weeks, the pain from the uncompleted turn and Vlas's repeatedly mental blood calls to her draw Amber unwillingly back to him. Amber is forced to return to Vlas for a second injection of Vlas's venom to complete her change to be fully vampire.

After the second injection of venom and her complete turn, Vlas lures her out into the streets of New Orleans and tricks her into killing multiple people, in order to tie her more strongly to him. She kills 4 bad people in the streets who had done and intended to do more evil things. Another still-living person in the group of people she killed shoots her with a gun, and she is angrily about to kill the shooter when Maverick shows up. Vlas tries to kill Maverick, and then Amber turns on Vlas as well. Vlas shoots both Maverick and proceeds to beat the crap out of Amber. I will not give away the ending of the book for you- you'll have to read it for yourself to find out how it ends up.

I did enjoy how Amber was presented as a badass. She was a fighter (of course, since she was a 4th belt in multiple difference marital arts). She pounded on Maverick several times as well as Vlas. "The though(t) of fighting made her blood run hot. She wanted to feel the crunch of bone under her palms and hear the slap of flesh against flesh. Her heat for battle would surprise many of her classmates."
I also enjoyed that she was credited with being very smart- I like my heroines to be brainy. Vlas thinks about her: "Her voice was musical, her body hot, and her brain off the charts. She would be his ace in the hole. People would listen to her. She could present the facts in a way that the science would amaze people. Then he would have his minions. It may take a while, but when you were immortal time meant little."

I did end up very distracted by the huge number of editing errors. It pulled me out of the flow of the book repeatedly to have to figure out what a word or phrase should have been. Probably spellchecker was used and changed many words to the wrong ones.

This author has written several other books that I found listed on Goodreads. All her other books had good or great ratings on Goodreads. The highest rating was an average of 5 stars for Murder Stalks. Murders Stalks had 9 reviews, the highest number of ratings for this author. At the time of my review of this book, Vampiric Assignations had 1 rating on Goodreads with a rating of 3 stars. This very short book (a little longer than a short story) feels to me like an early work by this author. The first half of the book appeared less polished to me, and I did enjoy the second half of the book more. Sher has a good underlying plot for this book, and I believe she will continue to mature and develop in her writing style. I look forward to seeing what future books may hold.

*read in super fast forward mode
-hated Vlas
-for someone who supposedly knows how to fight, Amber plays the role of the damsel in distress a lot
-Maverick was ok...ish :))
-the writing style wasn't that incredible either (too many 'awesome' and 'cool')

I believe I won this on LibraryThing. I love vampires and romance. This is a bit of both! Hope there is a series. Maverick is part of the Protectorate which keeps the paranormal populous in order. Vlas is reckless Vampire who want's to rule the world. Amber is trapped in the middle of these to volatile men. She is beautiful, brilliant and wants more. She wasn't expecting to be turned into a vampire to give the world more.

Suspenseful, sexy and scary! Great read.

I love vampire stories and it is a great book. I can compare to an action movie, it hasn't got the most original storyline, but it's well paced, such difficult to put it down, full of action, spiced with some erotics, some bloody parts, great fights, just ideal to escape from the reality for a time.

While not the most original plot this was well written with engaging fleshed out characters. I enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to others who enjoy this genre. Read more reviews, author interviews and enter giveaways on my blog.
