This was a cute, simple love story. Both characters were likeable, there was nothing extraordinary to set them apart from others in the genre but overall the story was enjoyable, the conflict minimal and the drama next to none.

“You’ve been nothing but trouble since the day you showed up on my porch.”

What a lovely book! I loved it!

Rachel Gibson can always be counted on to deliver a delightful and subtle story with the characters that you can easily fall in love with. And Nothing but Trouble was definitely a winner for me. This book grabbed me from the very first page and I had a difficult time putting it down.

Here is the love story of Mark Bressler, a grumpy former NHL superstar, and Chelsea Ross, an unemployed actress.

Six months ago, Mark was a superstar hockey player, captain of the Seattle Chinooks. But the car crash almost took his life and it ended his athlete career. One day he was a strong athlete, and the next he couldn’t even walk ten feet without pain. The accident not only broke his bones, but also ripped out his soul. He felt hopeless and broken inside. When the Chinooks’ organization sent a new home health care worker to his house, he didn’t want to be dependent on anyone and he needed no one to take care of him, so he intended to get rid of this home care worker as soon as she arrived.

Chelsea was hired to work for Mark as his personal assistant. If she could last three months with him, the Chinooks’ organization promised her $10,000 bonus, and she already had a plan to spend this ten grand on breast reduction surgery. After that, she would get back to chase her acting dream. But first things first, she had to deal with Mark’s somber moods, and failure was not an option.

As much as they tried to fight their attraction toward each other, their feelings kept growing even deeper and more intense. And both of them knew… there was certainly going to be trouble.

I’m so glad I finally got the chance to read this book. I loved every page of it and thoroughly enjoyed the story from start to finish. It had a little bit of everything I want in my contemporary romance reads.

Another one of the things I loved best about this book was the drama. I really wonder how on earth the author could come up with such heartbreaking and emotional scenes that got me a tad bit teary-eyed. It broke my heart to see Mark and Chelsea break up because of the misunderstanding. Thankfully, it didn’t take him long to find out that she truly loved him. Despite the fact that I wanted to see him grovel for her forgiveness just a little more, I was still very satisfied with the ending.

I got everything as expected. How could I ask for more? Highly recommended.

-----------------------------------------------

He liked being with her. He liked talking to her and making her laugh. He liked the twists and turns of her mind and her sense of humor. He liked that she thought she was impulsive when she was clearly in control of everything around her. He liked the look in her eyes when she was determined to have her way. He especially liked the look in her eyes when she was determined to have her way with him.

She loved everything about him. She loved the sound of his voice and his laughter. She loved the way he smelled and the touch of his hand on her arm or the small of her back. She loved how she felt when he looked at her or simply walked into a room. She loved that his hard shell contained a soft heart.

Okay, so, I was really scared to get started on this book!

The thing is, in See Jane Score and True Love and Other Disasters, which are the books in this series I'd already read, the main characters pretty much achieved most (if not all) of their professional goals by the end of their journeys, and their HEAs with their love interests were the cherry on top.

This one, however, is the story of Mark Bressler, the former captain of the Chinooks. All he ever wanted was to lead his team to the Stanley Cup, to be the best, to win. But, as we know from the previous books, he was involved in a catastrophic car crash, and will never be able to play hockey again. All of his hopes and dreams have been shattered. So I was like, what's his love story going to be like? Will the author be able to convince me by the ending that he is happy and fulfilled?

Well, my first mistake was thinking I knew anything about this guy from seeing him through other characters' points of view. Mark's journey is less about learning how to be happy without hockey and more about examining what drove him to it, and how his attitude on the ice reflected into his life, and whether any of that was actually healthy.

The main female character, Chelsea Ross, was the perfect counterpart for Mark. She was essentially going through a very similar path in professional terms, but her attitude was very different than his.

Chelsea is the black sheep of her family; while all of her family members have very serious, prestigious careers, she spent her twenties living paycheck-to-paycheck in LA, hoping for a big break into acting stardom. Now thirty, Chelsea saw no other option but to return to Seattle, where her family lives, and take a job as a personal assistant to Mark (against his wishes), since the bonus the Chinooks are offering if she makes it three months without quitting could help her in a number of ways (including career-wise).

Mark and Chelsea's single-mindedness about their careers was so interesting to see, because their approaches to life without the guiding compass of their dreams were so different. Chelsea was a ray of sunshine in crazy designer clothing, while Mark was a Vicodin-powered cloud of stubbornness and bad mood.

I was so invested in their antagonistic dynamic and the attraction they couldn't seem to turn off. Rachel Gibson heroes always start off despising the heroines, which is hilarious, because then they're the ones chasing after them the whole time.

I loved this one even more than I was expecting to. On to the next!

Sadly, I was bored through most of the book. In five words? Boring. Uneventful. Lackluster. Forgettable. Predictable.

I used to be a huge fan of Rachel Gibson, but a few years back she changed her writing style and now her books are noticably shorter and have far less layers and plot development. The characters are more one dimensional than her earlier books too, and the heat just doesn't sizzle as well because of it. BUT, on the plus side she was always able to keep the dialog, heat and storyline interesting enough for me. Despite not loving them as much as her earlier books, I kept reading and anticipating more. However, in this one everything pretty much failed. A quick forgettable read with a boring plot, no funny dialog, a lackluster romance that didn't feel genuine, and a just OK hero/heroine that in my mind didn't really fit together. I wasn't sold. Oh well, at least it was a quick read.

I long for the Rachel Gibson of before, but I guess I will have to give up on that wish. Luckily, authors like Toni Blake are picking up the slack and writing some fun, interesting and hot romance contemporaries.

**Edited to added my full review, as posted on Amazon**

Mark Bressler is recovering from a terrible auto accident and lucky to be alive. He was the captain of a Seattle hockey team before his accident, and his team even went on to win the Stanley Cup without him. Chelsea is a struggling scream-queen horror movie actress and a Hollywood personal assistant who comes to Seattle to see her sister (the PR agent for the hockey team) and takes a 3-month job helping Mark recover. If she can manage 3-months, she will get a $10K bonus check and a chance to change her life for the better.

The premise of this story was shaky to start, but I was willing to buy Chelsea being hired by the team as a personal assistant (when he needed a nurse assistant but he ran all of the ones in Seattle off with his a-hole personality), if only the humor and romance made up for it. Most of the story takes place at Mark's house or showing the two of them running errands and her doing his personal secretarial work. Boring. I did not find much of this interesting or humorous, as Mark was just a jerk trying to get rid of her. We mostly see his bad side, and therefore must believe Chelsea falls for that kind of guy. There are some scenes with him coaching a young kid, but Chelsea is not around for many of those so she really does not get to see the brief glimpses of his good side.

Chelsea was a likable and different heroine, and she was great at letting his many insults roll off of her. However, I would have liked to see her spit back a few insults at times as he really had it coming. She was too passive at times and wishy-washy. They liked each other's physical look and had some sexual dream fantasies about each other, but I never got the feeling of a budding romance. The need to scratch an itch? Yes. A romance? No. The sexual tension was mostly missing, so when they finally do come together it seemed a bit sudden. His declaration that he is only good at hockey and sex was his odd way of wooing her. In his mind his reasoning is since he can't play hockey, let's have sex and see if that part of him still works after the accident. Ugh. Not romantic.

As with all romances, there is the conflict and resolution. Without spoiling it, let's just say I didn't buy it at all. The conflict was a minor issue that is blown out of proportion. The resolution was too quick, too easy, and too who-gives-a-hoot.

In the end, I never cared for Mark, Chelsea was OK, and the relationship just did not feel like one that would work past six months. There was a secondary storyline with her sister, but it was glossed over. It was not a strong secondary romance story. There were a few cameos from past players and their wives, but we see very little of them.

Overall, I thought it lacked all the normal Rachel Gibson magic. It had little humor, boring characters, no honest sexual tension, a boring storyline, and a lackluster romance that didn't convince me at all. I've read everything Rachel Gibson, many books multiple times, but this will not be one of them. I long for her more layered, heart-felt, sizzling romantic stories from her earlier writing days, but that may just be a thing of the past.

Hot, funny, sexy contemporary romance + hockey = one happy reader!

I'm lovin' this series--I haven't read a bad one yet! Rachel Gibson has me hooked and I couldn't be happier. I'm having a blast reading this series, and devour each one and can't wait to start the next. I'm a sucker for a sports romance, and a sports romance where the heroes are all studly, somewhat grumpy but ultimately sweet hockey players in love with their spunky heroines? I'm sold!

This one's the story of retired (due to a horrifying car accident that nearly took his life) captain Mark "The Hitman" Bressler and his spunky personal assistant/part-time actress Chelsea Ross. Chelsea's twin sister is Bo from the Chinook's PR department. Bo has arranged for Chelsea, who left her last PA job in L.A. after her employer expected special "favors" not related to her job, to work for Mark as his assistant. Mark is recovering from a car accident that ended his hockey career and left him with a limp and a damaged hand and a reliance on pain killers. Mark (and his bad, cranky attitude) doesn't want the petite, funky Chelsea or anyone that the Chinooks send around him and does everything in his power to make her quit like all the other health care workers/assistants who came before her. But Chelsea's no quitter, no matter how rude Mark is--especially if a $10,000 bonus from the Chinooks is on the line if she sticks it out with him for 3 months. Chelsea has big plans for that money--breast reduction surgery for her double D's...

Mark...
Photobucket

I loved this one so much because of the heroine, Chelsea. I thought she was adorable, spunky, cute, funny, and very relatable--the kind of girl you'd like for a best friend. And Mark, even though he was a typical RG asshat for a lot of the book...well, I had to cut him some slack since he was in a lot of physical pain and his career was over. And I knew that he really liked Chelsea, even though he was hell bent on not admitting it. I loved the dialogue throughout the book, loved catching up with all the Chinooks, past and present, the humor (which RG does really well), loved the part about the ringtones they had for each other's cell phones--especially the one that Mark programmed on Chelsea's phone at the end of the book, and the sexual tension was off the charts! You do have to wait a long time before Chelsea and Mark get busy, but when they finally do...whew!

Of course, there is a little snag in the romance near the end just when these two are finally connecting, and the inevitable break-up and a really sweet makeup where Mark finally spills his true feelings (had me tearing up too)...but I loved it! Mark and Chelsea may be my favorite couple in this series, but honestly--it's hard not to love all RG's pairings.

Readers who love hot contemporaries with a healthy dose of sports action and well developed characters who spar and bicker but ultimately fall head-over-heels may fall in love with this series like I have. They are sexy, fun reads that leave a smile on my face and a tear or two in my eyes. I can't get enough of them! 5 stars

Really really really enjoyed this one!

❤'d Mark

❤'d Chelsea

Chelsea was full of sass and fun while Mark was burly and moody. They made a great couple and I loved the tug and pull with them. I loved it even more when they finally gave up and gave in. ❤

Another fun, sexy and sweet story!

Murder and mayhem are my normal reading material, but sometimes you just need a little romance and Rachel Gibson is one of my go-to authors for a little spice. I got my spice, but the story failed to hold my attention.

When Mark Bressler skidded off the highway and crashed not only his car, but his superstar hockey body, he knew he would never play hockey again. He has a real problem because there are only two things he was good at and one of then he can't ever do again. He has been a nasty piece of work and is only more so when his team wins the Stanley Cup, without him.

Chelsea Ross is bunking with her twin sister, Beau, trying to figure out what is next for her. She was a total bust as an actress with the highlight of her career being "Pretty Dead Girl #1" in a slasher film. But Beau gets her a job as the personal assistant to a superjock hockey player. With the added incentive that if she stays for three months there will be a $10.000 bonus. Chelsea could sure use the money.

When Mr. Nasry meets Ms. Determined, let the sparks and smack talk begin.

12/28/2014 -- Re-read

Not sure why I only gave this 4 Stars before. I don't adjust ratings, but if I did, I think it would be 4.5 Stars. Maybe its because of all the crappy reads I've had this year? Who knows, but this is a go to author for me. Even her 3 Star reads are better than most books available right now. Bitch about big publishing, but I do think they separated the chaf from the cash crops. Pretty apparent lately. I hope we can get to a happy medium. Maybe 2015 will be that year.

Overall Rating = 4.5 Stars

Another really nice read from Rachel Gibson. My second by this author. Reading the Chinook series out of order.

What I liked about this story:
1 -- the quirkiness of Chelsea.
2 -- Mark. He wasn't a terribly strong character, but was believable and you really felt for his accident and what the change meant to his life.
3 -- Bo and Jules -- loved these two together and would love to see them have their own story, but not sure it is in the cards. Jules especially, is intriguing. I've never understood, or been particularly attracted to "metro-sexuals", but he seems to be defined this way and I liked him.
4 -- the role Hockey played in this story.
5 -- Chelsea's busty problem. This is a very real problem for some women [myself included] and having a large bust and the issues this can cause addressed in this story was familiar. I liked this not well known topic addressed was nice.

This could have had a higher rating by me, but I thought Mark a bit lacking. And, the story ended rather abruptly for me. One minute they were starting to develop their relationship, then it hit a bump, then "ta da" he misses her and wants to marry her. All in about 25 pages at the end [or it felt this way].

I'm looking forward to more in this series, but am reading them out of order because the older ones aren't available on Nook. BUT, looked again today and they are coming March 27th. I am so there!!

Rachel is becoming a must read/buy author for me. Like the way she spins a story - but wish they were longer!

Happy Reading!

3.75 stars. A reread, and my star-rating is the same as before. An enjoyable addition to this old fav series, although not a perfect read. Mark, the former professional sportsperson who lost his career after a car accident. He's still suffering pain, anger, grief. Chelsea, with her love of wild and colourful fashion, has dabbled at various careers including bit parts in 'slasher' movies. She rolls her eyes and rolls up her sleeves when she takes a position as assistant to this difficult, moody man. If she can last three months, she'll get a $10,000 bonus. Nice.

But predictably, they fall in love (it's a romance novel after all, LOL). I quite liked the gradual development of their relationship, as they started to open up to and understand each other. Mark showed himself to be quite an evolved person at times. He completely respected Chelsea's intentions and her rights to make decisions that were right for her and her body. Even her own family weren't sympathetic, but Mark was supportive. I liked that.

The ending of the book did feel somewhat rushed, and perhaps not totally convincing as a consequence. But still, I enjoyed the reread. Almost a comfort read, I guess, when I'm not in the mood for anything new. I haven't enjoyed all of Gibson's books that I've read, but this series is well done, perhaps a little dated now, but still funny and appealing.

3 Estrellitas.

Sweet romance. Our heroine is an out of work actress who knows her big break is just around the corner. All she needs is a bit of plastic surgery. Where to get the $? Enter our hero. A former hockey star who was benched by a horrible car accident. All she has to do is stay on as his assistant throughout his ill-tempered actions.

This is fifth in a series and includes cameos (some kinda forced, really) from pretty much all of the others (even the first). Because they're so short, you don't really need to have read the others to enjoy this one. I do recommend you read True Love and Other Disasters first, though, because you get a lot of Bo and Jules in that one and this has them as strong secondary characters.

I really enjoyed this all the way until I didn't. I mean, it was solid 4.5 and only needed a small push to hit 5 stars. And then it got stupid and I lost all sympathy with Mark and the book never recovered. Which is a real shame because the relationship was outstanding (until it wasn't).

A lot of that is down to Chelsea. She's really sweet and I love that she lets Mark's barbs bounce off long enough for her to see beneath them to the man who was hurting so badly (both physically and emotionally). I also liked her determination to pursue her dream and that she did so in a controlled and practical way that was completely planned, even though acting is such a chaotic pursuit. And she really won my heart as she drew Mark out and let him gain the control over his own life that he first lost in his accident, but then was letting slide in his emotional recovery as well.

And truth be told, I got to really like Mark as the book wore on. You could see how his accident had changed him, but I suspect the man he became was even better than anything he could have become without it—i.e. it seems like he'd been something of a controlling jerk and I think he emerged much better off (partially for having Chelsea's guidance, but also just because he made the choice to be better). So yeah, I fell for Mark, too.

And then . . .

So this dropped a full star and any thought of rounding. And for some reason my gift for rewriting things in my head didn't work. Maybe because I'd have to rewrite the entire ending as well? I mean, even once Mark came to his senses (yeah, not a spoiler given the genre) his "grand gesture" was neither grand nor even much of a gesture. Talk about ending on a pfffffew.

A note about Steamy: There are two and maybe a half explicit sex scenes in the story, so about the middle of my steam tolerance. I'm sure if the book had ended on a better note, I'd be happier with them, but as it stands, I remember them with kind of a meh.

Nothing but Trouble picks up right where True Love and Other Disasters left off. Mark Bressler, the former captain of the Chinooks, was nearly killed in a serious car accident 6 months prior. He's alive, but will never play hockey again due to the injuries he received in the car accident. Playing hockey was all he ever wanted to do and winning the Stanley Cup his life dream. Well the Chinooks have finally won the Stanley Cup, but Mark doesn't feel like he deserves any of the recognition because he didn't play in that one game.

Chelsea Ross is a down on her luck actress that has decided to move to Seattle for a break from the LA life. Her sister (Bo Ross) works for the Chinooks organization and gets Chelsea a job as Mark Bressler's newest personal assistant/home health care aide (he's been through about 5 at this point). The Chinooks promise Chelsea a 10k bonus if she just sticks with Mark for 3 months.

The storyline is typical big, bad, moody athlete falls for sweet, totally not his type girl who knows nothing about the sport. Of course, there is a secret that will be revealed that will cause some trouble between Mark & Chelsea. There is also a nice side love story between Jules (Faith Duffy's assistant) and Bo (Chelsea's sister). My only real complaint of the book is the abrupt ending.

Rachel Gibson has a way of writing a typical story that will have you laughing out loud and finding tears in your eyes. I just enjoy her books so much! There is a sneak peek at the end for her next hockey player book featuring Sam LaClaire - which definitely has me interested to read more. I just hate that Gibson only releases her books once a year.

This was a pretty decent read. It was fast paced and a fun read. The dialog between Mark and Chelsea was witty and didn't feel forced.

However, what bothered me most about the book was Chelsea. For the most part she's a likable heroine. What bugged me is that in the beginning she's only taken the job to get the big bonus of 10 grand so she can have breast reduction surgery. Yet she wears designers like Pucci (who I never heard of before this book) and Kate Spade shoes (which I know are not cheap - if a purse costs $300+ what can shoes cost?) It's not like she had a lot of money to begin with (so I would love to know how she paid for these items - only once was it mentioned she got some dress at a consignment shop) since she wasn't a big star and only played the slutty friend who dies first in Slasher movies. Maybe if Gibson had mentioned that she had an addiction instead of Chelsea was in to fashion it would've worked but she didn't, so it didn't. That was an aspect of her character I found really annoying. It just really bugged me.

Another thing I didn't like was her family and even her twin sister thinking she was stupid to have her breasts reduced. (She was a size double D). Her twin sister (who has the same body type) was not supportive and was actually a bit mean to her sister about it.

If you're looking for a quick beach read this will do. There's nothing mind blowing about the story and the big misunderstanding was predictable. It's just a nice, light read with a bit of an annoying heroine at times.

This and #2 are my favorite out of the series so far. I loved Chelsea and the whole premise of her being a personal assistant to an injured hockey player.

4.5 stars. Enemies to lovers with a complete douchebag of a hero that redeems himself throughout. A clever sexy heroine that doesn’t take his bull crap and sizzling chemistry with the right amount of angst thrown in at the end! Perfect.

3.5 stars.

I couldn't put this down because Rachel Gibson's storytelling was quite engaging but at the same time, it left me feeling a little bemused.

Separately, Mark and Chelsea were really interesting characters and there is no doubting their sexual chemistry; but there was just no emotional connection between them. It felt like something was missing. Especially when they finally caved into their intense chemistry and made a go of it. It just seemed like they were together because that's just how the story goes.

I feel with Gibson throughout this series it's like she isn't provided with the space to fill in the gaps of each story. It's like she's running against the clock. This was a cute read and quite sexy but just didn't get there completely for me in the end.
