Alice - computer honcho and closeted dyke by day/swimmer in the lesbian sea of women by night - has been touched by an angel, but not the television variety. Phoebe is a different kind of angel in America, Alice's insolent guardian angel. And she wants to be human.
Worlds upon worlds inside of worlds beside worlds, and also in dimensions we don’t imagine. This book is exploding with stories tangent to each other, tangled with each other. Spoiler alert, as in the best fiction, nothing is tied up with a bow - but although the ending is not an ending, it is, from a felt sense. There were some issues of pacing and the storyline was confusing at times, but ultimately I wanted to follow where the author was leading, and I enjoyed the surprise.

This was a really tough review to write, not because it’s a bad book. On the contrary, this is an interesting and entertaining little fantasy. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The writing is pretty good for a first novel. It was tough because it’s such a short book. To describe the plot gives away a lot, that is, it can be a big spoiler. So I’ll do the best I can. The author hasn’t written much since this book, which is too bad. I felt that the imagination that went into this was great. It was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in 1999, but it is currently out of print, as far as I’ve found.
A solid and quick beach read, but I was confused towards the end, and felt there was some unresolved plot-holes. I did love the interconnecting aspect of the stories within the book to the main characters.
