Joie is a high school graduate that recently lost her father and ends up reluctantly trailing after a rock and roll band with her best friends only to find love in a very unexpected way. She must avoid letting her mother know what she is up to, keep one friend from jumping from one frying pan into another while helping the other hook up with the love of his life and all this while attempting to thwart a killer who is seeking revenge. The dialogue is humorous, the characters engaging and the dramatic tension both romantic and murderous.

Joie received the keys to a '68 Volkswagen Van that her father left her after he passed away. Never having really known her father, the van became nostalgic. It was the summer before Joie was supposed to go to college, but unsure with what she wanted to do with her life, or even if she wanted to go to college. Joie's two best friends already had their summer mapped out. Riley got a position writing show reviews for the famous Grimm Brother's band web site which included free tickets for the summer tour. Lizzie's idea was to spend a memorable summer together, going around the country following the band. Add to the fact Lizzie was dating the drummer for the opening act. All they needed was money and transportation. This is where Joie comes in, not only does she have her '68 Volkswagen but her dad also left her some money. Content to stay home, Joie gives in to her friends after being hounded by her mom to sign up for college. So starts Joie's journey to growth, freedom and finding love in the last place she would expect, if she can survive the summer.....

I have to start off saying that I absolutely loved this book!! This is classified as YA and while I do enjoy YA, I'm always nervous when I first pick up a YA book from a new to me author. I can be intrigued with the storyline, but I need to feel an intense connection with the characters ten times more than I would from the other genres I read in. Most YA's don't contain those hot, steamy bedroom scenes that I love. Without those scenes, I need to feel the the connection that much more and I need it to really pull me into the story. It always amazes me to come across an author who can give me all that, give me butterflies, make my heart speed up and sigh at what's happening on the page with just an innocent touch, a look, a kiss and a few simple words. All without that smexy bedroom scene. Leah Spiegel gave me that and more. I have to thank Book Whore for allowing me to be a part of their group read and for introducing me to this story. It's one I will definitely pick up again and again and leave on my bookshelf for my daughter to read.

Hawkins, sigh, Hawkins....I wasn't sure what to expect with Hawkins when he first stepped on the page. Upon first meeting, I was as confused and upset as Joie was. He turned out to be a great character and I loved the image he made in my head. Hawkins was a famous rock star, lead singer for The Grimm Brother's band, who was dealing with loss and writer's block. He seemed almost lost, just going through the motions until he met Joie. Hawkins was a little bit older than Joie, but he didn't have the characteristics I would expect a big star to have. He was grounded almost humbled. I loved the bantering between Joie and Hawkins, it kept me glued to the pages early on in the story. They may have been trashing each-other and denying their attraction, but it was plain to see the attraction was there. Joie's character was full of patience (one word...LIZZIE!!!) and she was so strong in everything she put up with. She really faced things head on, she was selfless when I wish she would of been a little selfish. Lizzie's character was easy to hate. It started out with a little dislike, but once she showed her true colors, it was full on hate. Leah did a great job in giving me a character I despised and then having me soften towards her, just a little towards the end. It's always great when characters can pull out a range of emotions with me, and these characters had me laughing, swooning and wishing I could choke someone out :) Riley, I just plain loved Riley. Riley is the best friend any girl wishes they could have. He really rounded out this story and I looked forward to any and all page time he had. Though I felt like he was sometimes left out, I don't think Riley's character really minded. I minded though, I would have loved to knock Lizzie out of the picture and replace her with Riley. LOL Did I mention my strong dislike for her?? :)

The greast aspect of this story was Joie and Hawkins. I loved watching them come together and seeing them both grow when they were together. Their first elevator ride together that sarts out the book was a complete disaster, but their second elevator ride and the third had me cheering and seeing there was so much more to Hawkins. When these two finally quit the bantering and gave in to their feelings, I felt like I could breathe easier and all was right in the world. My favorite scene with these two was their picnic in the meadow. Even though it was cut short, I found it beautiful.

Of course I have to mention the suspense in this book, combined with Joie and Hawkins chemistry is what wouldn't let me put this book down. When word of a stalker was first mentioned, I was immediately intrigued and had no idea the path it would take or the things this stalker would do. Who was this stalker they called the Grimm Reaper? What did this person want? How were they getting past security? Were they on the crew? I was honestly trying to figure all these questions out and and my mind was trying different scenarios trying to decide who else was involved and I was wondering who to trust right along with the characters. It really brought Joie and Hawkins together as they realized they could lose each-other. Hawkins protective instinct kicked in and all he wanted was for Joie to be safe. When I did discover the reasoning behind the Grimm Reaper, it was shocking and sad all the while a very real aspect that many people deal with. I guess I was expecting something cliche, but was hit with a very real tragedy. Kudos for the author for giving great insight into human emotion and what can push someone over the edge and make them crack.

The only thing I can say that bothered me was there was quite a few grammar and spelling mistakes. Being that I loved the story so much, I was able to look past it and still loved this book. Also, I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the big climatic showdown with the Grimm Reaper. It didn't end the way I wish it did and really wished it would have been drawn out a little and maybe ended to quick. I really think Joie should have been more a part of the Reaper's demise.

I really wasn't ready to let go of these characters and though I'm not sure if there story will get a chance to continue or if it's the end for them, I really would have loved an epilogue to see these characters a few months after the story ended. What the heck, I just really wanted more page time and didn't want it to end :) Overall, I loved this book, as I think I have mentioned on here a few times before :)

”So take your place here next to me
And I’ll take my place there next to thee
And no matter how far we may roam
It’s by your side I will make my home”
~ “Loving Wings” by Dave Matthews Band

The book began with a lyric from Dave Matthews. I knew immediately that I was going to LOVE this book. I seriously devoured this story. If it wasn’t for sleep, I would’ve read this in one setting. It was one of those non stop page turners. I kept thinking that it’ll eventually slow down. Nope. That did not happen at all. Page after page, after page, there was never good place to stop.

Hawkins & Joie made a dynamite couple. Their relationship started off as a battle of he said/she said. Hawkins did not make the best first impression on Joie. As a matter of fact, he pretty much dismisses her stating that he prefers blondes. Joie, of course, wasn’t even trying to gain his attention. What does get his attention is when Joie shares her opinion about him with her BFF, Riley, who accidentally posts it on a blog, stating that he’s just an arrogant and smug rock star. He of course wasn’t going to take that jab lying down and tweets a reply. Thus begins their banter. They pretty much go blow for blow. The buzz about their altercations on the internet gives Hawkins’ band a much needed publicity boost. The only draw back is that, through a misunderstanding, the public believes that Joie’s other friend, Lizzie, is the face behind the words. Lizzie’s character annoyed the crap out of me. She’s beautiful, but she is one selfish, attention-seeking B. She has this demented perception that she can have anything and anyone, anytime she wants. Fortunately Hawkins sees through her façade and only has eyes for Joie.

However, being the lead singer’s muse, Joie is now a target of a deranged stalker. He is out for revenge and is out to destroy Hawkins and his band. The suspense of finding out who’s who is another reason why I enjoyed this book. The action wasn’t overwhelming and didn’t take anything away from the couple. It actually brought them together.

The only thing lacking in the story is that I wanted a little more steam between our H/h, but it’s YA, so it’s expected. Without a doubt, I recommend this book for anyone wanting a solid story involving a hot, arrogant, rockstar hero and an extremely likable heroine who knows how to dish it back. Throw in her BFF, Riley, a lot of banter (and you know I love that!), a stalker and you got yourself a fantastic story.

What a sweet and suspenseful read! This was one of those stories that had a lot going on and that made it hard to put down. I think that the romance and suspense components worked well together in this story. I really liked the roadtrip setting going to various concert venues, the moments of suspense, and the overall romance.

The characters were fun to follow. I loved the tension and banter between Joie and Hawkins, the hot rock star. I really liked the concept of them both not being able to stand each other, but really they secretly like each other. Their overall relationship was believable, and that was refreshing.

If you like your romances with a bit of suspense and mystery then this is one worth the read.

this was a fun book to read, with a boy-meets-girl, girl-hates-egocentric-boy, boy-hates-cynical-girl, but-secretly-they-wanna-tear-their-clothes-off plotline.
I liked the gay best friend, and the romance interest.
but there was SO much about this book that could have been better. The roadtripping aspects, music parts, the focus...
but in the end it was the BELIEVABILITY that did me in.
I mean, how many people are SHOT AT, almost KIDNAPPED and just get up and continue their daily business like nothing went wrong?
how stupid can people be? SERIOUSLY?
And what the hell was up with (because, for the life of me, i just cannot remember her name. *cough cough* forgettable?) the protagonist's best friend?? WHAT WAS UP WITH HER? she was the biggest bitch, a horrible person, shallow, conceited, self-centered and MEAN.
Why would anybody be friends with her? Hell, if my sister was like that i would disown her and refuse to ever speak to her, let alone some girl i became friends with 2 years ago.
Anyway, Foolish Games had cute, funny moments, but it was just not a stellar read.
It was simply... unbelievable.
Honestly, SHOT AT. WITH A GUN. and we just carry on like it was a scuffle in the ladies' bathroom.
WTF?

A good love story ruined by the far from good "suspense" plot.

Joie's father has died recently and left her some cash and his van. Now, Joie has no idea what she wants to do with her life, so she decides to spend the summer with her two friends, Riley and Lizzie, "chasing" a band. A band whose singer is one J.T. Hawkins.

Hawkins is cynical, tortured, disillusioned and in a serious need for inspiration. His band is not doing so well, and he simply can't make himself write any songs. It seems that since his brother's death nothing can go the way it should. And then he meets Joie. And the war starts.

He tweets something not so complementary about her. She writes a slightly insulting blog post about him. And so on and so fort.

I really liked that part of the book. The tension and chemistry between them was amazing. The insults were just a cover for their true emotions. And when they started to open up to each other - awesome.

Unfortunately, a stalker showed up. And suddenly, Joie become the embodiment of TSTL heroine. I mean, the guy tries to abduct her and shoots at her, and she has the bright idea to try and trap him. Really?

I might have been able to come to terms with it and give the book a higher rating (that the romance itself deserves), if it weren't for the grand finale. It was simply to ridiculous for words. And it totally killed my enjoyment of the book. I'm too irritated right now to completely explain everything that is wrong with it, but take my word for it - ridiculous.

There were some other slight faults with the characters (her refusal to acknowledge their relationship for example), but it wouldn't have bothered me too much. As I said, the suspense is the reason for the low rating.

Anyway, it seems like this is the first book in the series. I might pick up the next book, simply because this one showed such promise.

I saw this books many times and kept coming back to it, and finally purchased it, and I am sooooo glad I did. From the minute I started reading the booked I was entranced. I couldn't put it down!!! However when I started getting closer and closer to the end I had to put it down simply because I didn't want it to end.

I was enraptured with Joie from the beginning and when Hawkins came to the scene I couldn't stop. I don't want to give to much away because I think EVERYONE should read this book, and no one would be disappointed!!!! I will read everything by Leah Spiegel! She is brilliant and I love her writting!!!!! This is one of my top 5 favorite books!

This book took me by SURPRISE!!! I have never heard of this author or the book, but a friend said I had to read it. I was complaining about heroines in YA/NA books being idiots and she insisted that I read Foolish Games. Well, it did not disappoint. I LOVED the heroine, Joie. Loved her. Smart, caring, loving and strong. Does not take crap from anyone.

So the first half of this book I give 3 stars. The second half 5 stars, so that leaves me at 4.25 stars. Yeah, I really liked this one.

It had everything I liked in a YA/NA book.
#1 – AWESOME heroine.
#2 – HOT, rich, bad boy rock star of a hot band.
#3 – AWESOME characters.
#4 – The banter between hot guy and cute girl.
#5 – Suspense and mystery. This was not silly suspense where the bad guys just threaten the band. No, this guy was evil and I loved trying to figure out who it was. First, I thought it was predictable, but there was more.

Joie had these “rules” that she promised she would follow while she followed the band, but of course, certain circumstances make it harder and harder for her to keep her rules. I loved her rules and how she had to break them and her frustration with having to break them.

Did I already say how much I loved the hot, rich bad boy rock star??? HA! I loved Hawkins!!!

“Joie, I want you in my future. I don’t want to hide our love away any more like it’s something to be ashamed of,” he murmured in to my hair. I knew that he means everyone; the press, the public, and probably more than anything, my mom. “You need to decide what you want,” he continued, “because being with me means breaking all your rules forever. No more games.”

Hawkins, was just awesome. He was the perfect match for Joie. Joie may argue/banter with Hawkins, but she never comes off as annoying or whiny. You will love her and you will love him.

And I cannot end this review without talking about Joie’s best friend, Riley. Everyone needs a BFF like Riley. Riley is supportive and awesome in every sense of the word. He is just a good person with a good heart and I want him to find his true love in the next book. Crossing my fingers for Riley to get together with “you know who.”

Did I skim? No

Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes. Loved them!

Pace of the story: When I saw that the book was 442 pages, I thought that it would be too long. No, the pace was really good.

Positives: I loved the characters. I loved the suspense mixed in with the romance. This book may sound like a typical hot rock star falls for the cute girl next door girl, but Hawkins and Joie are just different together. Joie is smart and is a perfect equal to Hawkins. Hawkins may be your typical bad boy rocker, but he has a heart and he is just wow.

Negatives: I am not sure what it was about the first half of the book that felt slow for me. Not sure if it was slow or something else. However, after 45% or so, I could not put this book down.

Do I recommend? YES!!!!

When I first read the synopsis for this book I thought it was going to be a romance/erotica to rival Olivia Cunnings Backstage Pass, and I couldn't have been more excited about that...BUT I was so wrong.

So beautifully wrong.

While I kind of feel that the synopsis for this book is a little misleading I couldn't be happier about being misled. This book was a refreshing surprise, and I couldn't put it down!

To set the record straight this is NOT an erotic read. It is however, a gripping suspense/romance so sweet that you won't be able to look away. Joie is a snarky/witty 18 yr old that after road tripping from concert to concert, her mouth ends up getting her on the lead singers of J.T. Hawkins radar. It all started with him making a comment about preferring blonds over brunettes while riding in an elevator with a very brunette Joie. Later the next day when her friend Riley draws a blank on writing his review of the bands performance for their website Joie helps him out...while taking a few jabs at Hawkins to get back for the "brunette" comment. Little does she know that he will actually read it, and even twitter about it later.

Hawkins makes it clear that he doesn't want anything to do with Joie, and she does the same, but it doesn't take long for them both to realize that they are lying to themselves. But it's not a good time to get close to the Grimm Brothers Band. With a stalker on the rise, and the threats getting worse, can Joie escape unscathed? Or will falling in love with a rock star be the death of her?

The tension and the snark between these two is great. It sucks you in until you can't put the book down. I will say that the beginning of the book may seem a little slow at first. There's not a whole lot going on there, but trust me it picks up before you know it. In the end the love will make you swoon, and a little jealous. And the suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I say this is a book for anyone who loves rock stars, snarky girls, and suspense. And AGAIN this is NOT erotic...in fact the physical stuff is very YA approved!

I LOVED this book. I love a book that starts off with H/h interacting within the first couple of pages and this one starts off with them interacting with each other right from the word go!
Foolish Games is about a battle between a rock star and a young woman who is trying to find her next step in life. She just lost her father and her best friends convince her to follow the band across the states, since she is now in possession of a vehicle. As things between Joie and Hawkins escalate (they have a verbal battle online as well as face to face) Joie is thrown into the sites of the stalker and things get really interesting from there.
This book has it all, great friendships, not so great friendships, the girl you want to kill for being so self involved, the rockin' best friend, the rock star, the stalker, jealousy, mystery....the list could go on forever. I enjoyed this book so much I read it in one day. My family is lucky I stopped long enough to make them dinner. :)
Do yourself a favour, spend the $0.99 for this book, sit down and forget yourself for a while.

I had hope. I liked parts. I couldn't stop because I wanted to know what was going to happen... but it just didn't sit right. I don't know how many times I was reading... just scrolling along.. and then something MAJOR would happen... no prep. Just BAM! Out of nowhere

I tried to overlook it because I really wanted to like this book. But then... IT JUST ENDED! Seriously... just dropped.

So I'm being generous and giving this three stars. I still liked it and I couldn't stop reading it... but overall:

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

My Summary: The last place Joie wanted to be was stuck in an elevator with the Grimm Brother's Band... but she couldn't just let Lizzie follow them back to their hotel alone, could she?

Soon Joie and Lizzie are forced to be part of a huge scandal to bring up the popularity of the failing band, but things start to go bad when a creepy stalker begins harassing them...

My Thoughts: This book was so awesome! It was extremely refreshing and the writing was original and interesting. My personal favourite characters were Joie and Hawkins - I loved the chemistry between them!

When I first read the summary for this novel, I thought it'd be just another light romance... After reading it though, I realize how wrong my original expectations were. This book was anything but 'light' - the characters and the romance were complex, relatable, and interesting. Joie was someone I think every girl can relate to, and that fact alone helped me connect with the story more deeply. The supporting characters were also very realistic (we all have a Lizzie , I think!).

Final Thoughts: I definitely recommend this book to anyone who's looking for something new and refreshing, and to anyone who enjoys a (realistic) romance. Check it out - you'll be glad you did.

I thought this book was ok. It had some nice moments and the internet exchanges were fun. The suspense portion was waaaaay over the top which took up 1/3 of the book. I felt a disconnect between Joie and Hawkins even after when they finally admitted to having feelings for one another. Also, Lizzie, the friend, was such a b*tch. I just don't understand why Joie, who has a strong mind of her own and who seems to be pretty smart, would be friends with such a person. That just annoyed me and didn't seem realistic to fit a personality like Joie's. Riley, the other friend was fun but poor guy was always left behind when Joie and Lizzie was off backstage and at after parties. Joie's asked to get Riley backstage way later than she should have. You just don't leave friends hanging like that even though he said he didn't mind. Overall, this was a decent read but didn't blow me away like I hoped it would.

I liked the beginning of this book quite a bit. The Pride & Prejudice influenced elevator scene hooked me with the snarky main character refusing to give a self-important musician the time of day. Then a suspense plot derails the story into a farce, which goes on for way too many pages. Worse, my early liking for the characters evaporated as they devolve into the worst versions of rockstar & groupie cliches. In the end its a surreal Lifetime movie drama with a side of girl ends up with a jerk from some overblown radio band.

Review posted here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2012/03/indie-book-review-foolish-games-by-leah.html

Joie is fresh out of high school, she doesn't know what she wants to do now that she is out of high school. Her mother is scared that she won't make anyhing of herself. So for the summer, to get out of the house, Joie and her best friends go on a road trip to follow their favorite band. One of her friends, Riley, is a professional blogger. It is his job to write about the famous band. So one night while joining her other friend Lizzie who is hooking up with one of the band members, the leader, Hawkins, make a snide comment that Joie doesn't take lying down. This tiny conflict quickly spirals into a fun back and forth between both sides that puts everyone and everything in the spotlight. Unfortunately, this spotlight attracts the attention of a psycho whose mission is to hurt the band and everyone they know.

I have been trying to expand my horizons this year. Everyone knows that I pretty much breath anything supernatural. But fellow book blogger and friend, Danielle at BookWhore Blog, started a book club for this book and I thought why not. Contemporary Romance is a genre I don't normally gravitate to, but I am so glad I gave this a chance. I love finding books that surprise me in such a great way. Definitely unexpected.

I love this book. It started off like a fun, sweet read perfect for February and it turned into a murder/mystery just like that. Foolish Games is incredibly layered. This is not some simple love story. You would have never guessed by the looks of the cover, which is beautiful, but this book packs a punch. I won't spoil it, but this book is full of secrets and conspiracies. It will keep you on the edge of you seat for sure. Trying to find the connection is very exciting and will keep you guessing until the end.

We have plenty of characters to love and some not to love. Joie is a great lead character. I said if this were to be made into a movie, I could see Emma Stone playing her part. She is witty, spunky, and isn't afraid to say what is on her mind. I loved Hawkins. I wish I could find a guy like him. The verbal attacks between Joie and Hawkins were so entertaining. They definitely suit each other. Riley was definitely a fan favorite. Funny and smart as hell, he definitely helps solve a lot of the mystery of this book. I couldn't stand Lizzie. Her head was way too far up her own ass. I couldn't believe her and Joie were friends. As I have said, it was a mystery why Joie stayed friends with her. She low balls Joie numerous times throughout the book. Drove me mad!

This book was sweet, fun, and action packed. You will not be bored with this one at all. Foolish Games is very memorable and has scenes I know I will remember for a long time. The chemistry between Joie and Hawkins would have set the book on fire if it wasn't a YA which is probably the only disappointment about this book. I love YA books that aren't annoying and this wasn't. But as I said before, I would have loved for this book to be for adults. All it needed was a good sex scene and I would have been set. You know you were thinking it too, don't deny it. Nonetheless, Foolish Games is a gem. I loved it so much, I will read it again. So put whatever doubts you have aside and check this book out right now.

Foolish Games is an amazing story that takes two people with secrets and haunting shadows, throws them together, creates tons of "push and pull" conflict and weaves an unforgettable tale that grips the reader firmly until the very end.

I have to say that Foolish Games by Leah Spiegel has made my top favorite reading list of all time. This story is so much fun, the chemistry between the leading characters of rock star Hawkins and reluctant tour follower Joie is smoldering. There is suspense, romance, test of friendship and loyalties and a bit of behind-the-scenes rock and roll life blended into one superb story that was almost physically painful to stop reading at any time.

Foolish Games is the story of three friends - Joie, Lizzie and Riley. Riley has a job of writing reviews for the rock band, The Grimm Brothers Band. Lizzie is dating one of the guys from the opening act and Joie has the money and wheels to take the gang around from city to city. What begins as something that should be simple, turns into anything but.

Joie's first personal encounter with The Grimm Brothers Band's lead singer Hawkins is anything but sweet. Instead, the conflict between the two begins an online war that sends emotions rolling. Then, if dealing with that isn't bad enough, Lizzie is turning into a devilish friend from hell - who needs enemies with a friend like her?! Tons of conflict and adventure - all of this before the threat of the Grimm Reaper kicks into full gear. Someone is out for blood and will stop at nothing until his victims are dead.

I absolutely loved the smoldering chemistry between Hawkins and Joie. Neither one of them wanted to admit the attraction that everyone around them could quickly and easily see. This is a YA novel, so no overly hot and heavy scenes are depicted, however the heat is there and impossible to miss. Leah Spiegal does such an amazing job with this novel. I found myself completely trapped within the story - both physically and emotionally. I read this for an online book group (thanks Danielle at Book Whore for pulling this together - it was awesome), so the rules were that you were suppose to only read a certain number of chapters each week, quit and then discuss before moving on. Let me tell you - I could have easily gobbled this up in just two settings. I wanted to sob because I just wanted to read until the very end. Yes, it was that good. I truly detested Lizzie, adored Riley and was completely under the spell created by Joie and Hawkins. So many emotions that blended together to create a not-soon-to-be-forgotten story. I can't forget to add that I also loved the twists at the end - I was taken quite by surprise and loved it!!

I very highly recommend Foolish Games by Leah Spiegel and can't wait to delve into more by this amazing author!!

Foolish Games was a great read for me. It had everything! Super hot rock stars, mystery, suspense, best friends (both great and evil), life changing events, and lots of opportunities for three just graduated teens to become adults. Mix all that with an original (although slightly predictable) plot line and a romance almost every girl has dreamed of and you've got yourself one sweet treat.

Joie and her friends Riley and Lizzie are following the Grimm Brothers Band around on their summer tour. Riley has been hired to write blog reviews of the band's shows. Joie has the transportation and a little cash that her father recently left her and Lizzie just happens to be dating one of the opening band members. After a not so nice run in with lead singer Hawkins, Joie writes a derogatory fake blog review about what an ass Hawkins is basically. Things happen and the fake review accidentally gets sent and published. This all kicks starts the beginning of Foolish Games.

I was really enjoying reading a light hearted romance in the beginning of Foolish Games and then the book took a turn. A good turn. Things got kicked up a notch by crazy dude stalking the band and in all of the craziness he ends up stalking Joie and friends as well.

Leah Spiegel did a great job of intertwining a romance with a suspense novel and even though I was pretty confident that I knew what was going to happen in the end, I had no idea of the roller coaster ride that I would be on to get to that ending.

Even with all of the great twists and turns my favorite part of this book were the characters. What an amazing mix of people and emotions. The vulnerable rock star with a huge chip on his shoulder. Joie our main character who is just as vulnerable and has set up all of these walls to keep herself from ever being hurt again. The bitchy friend that you want to slap repeatedly. Riley, oh I can't say enough about Riley. He is always there for Joie with concern, honesty and a shoulder to lean on ( I loved him so much if you can't tell).

Trying something new for me at the end of this review let me know what you think.

Plot: Unique and fun
Characters: Amazing
Writing: A definite page turner
Ending: Slightly predictable, but awesome all the same
Kid Friendly: For a book about a bunch of older teens following a band around not as bad as you would think. Mentions of sex, drugs, and drinking but no overly descriptive scenes
Overall: A highly addictive, sweet romance with a touch of heart pounding suspense

This was the first book I had read by this author so I really had no idea what it would be like when I started reading. It’s certainly a long one! I love me a good long book though so I was really glad to get started on it.

This book was a little hard to rate for me. There were parts that seemed to drag a bit and other parts that I was so glued to the book I literally was walking around with my Kindle just plastered to my face (I walk with it rather close to my nose). Sometimes I would be reading and think, “Well, this is good but a definite four star” and other times I would think, “Wow, this is a five star book!!”. Let me break it down a bit (without giving away a single thing, because you need to read it for yourself!).

The things that had me thinking that I would write this review as a four star were mainly the parts of the book (this is hard to do without giving away the storyline but I’ll try) were how some things would be rather unlikely when a life was at stake. It would seem that such things would just not be done under the circumstances. It’s not a bad thing at all (otherwise why read at all! It’s far better to read a book and escape into another reality :D ) Also, at times it seemed to have a bit too much detail in areas that didn’t really forward the story.

Now that aside, let me explain what it was that gave it a higher, well deserved, rating. The author is brilliant. Her writing style is incredible and she seems to have the story just flowing in her mind which in many ways explains away my initial thoughts about the whole “too much detail”. Many times what I thought, as I was reading, was too much detail was actually there because it was later referenced in the story thus even though it seemed as if it was dragging a little, it was actually leaving something that would come back later. Also, the author has a really way of writing that seems so flawless and easy. I think it was simply the authors writing style that I just love and it was enough to totally deserve a five star and I will be reading all I can from her to see what else her mind comes up with. I’m so curious to see what else she writes. I really love her style.

All in all, I did enjoy reading this book and I would really recommend it to anyone who likes a book with a lot of storyline, characters that come to life on the pages and that you’ll be spending quite some time with, and who enjoy reading an author who is brilliant with words. It’s a really good book and story and one worth reading.

My favourite scene is when Joie pretends to be Hawkins:

Grabbing the damn thing [guitar]out of his hands and swinging it over my shoulder, I was in full strut mode...while Hawkins laughed.
“I am the shit.” I nodded. “Bow down.”

It's a good book with a sucky, unrealistic, WTF ending.

This book is about a roadtrip with two crazy rock group fans and one pessimistic almost cynical heroine, Joie. She's not at all fanatical and is practically babysitting her travel companions. Joie takes care of the money, the driving and all the organising of the trip. Joie has a more maternal outlook on her two road trip buddies. Rylie is her best friend and Joie is oddly protective over Lizzie, the groupie. Next to them, Joie is uptight and reserved. She's more interested in sightseeing historical locations around the States than rocking it out with popular bands. The icing on the cake is that she reads a book while attending Hawkins' rock concerts. She has a major temper and a lot of pride though and lookie loo, so does Hawkins. I liked that Joie isn't thrown by Hawkins' fame or all the girls that he's been through. She's a lot more mature than grown women.
Joie and Hawkins don't get off on the right foot. These two have a lot of snarky things to say to each other.

“Wow, you really are a piece of work, aren't you?” I glared up at him.
“And you're a lousy drunk,” Hawkins retaliated.
“And you're just plain lousy.” I retorted while passing him to head out into the hallway.

Joie is delightfully condescending to Hawkins. The two engage in an internet battle, exchanging insults for the world to see in a distorted/angry form of flirtation. Funnily enough, Lizzie becomes the face of Joie's blog posts so Joie happily battles wits with Hawkins and Lizzie soaks up the public attention. Sometimes Joie and Hawkins relationship sinks into nasty territory, but when they're getting along, it really is bliss.

Hawkins - ”I didn't think you'd be able to handle it. I'm pretty direct and usually make most girls cry.”
Joie - “There's always tomorrow.”
“There is.” He patted my knee. “Thanks for the pep talk.”

I liked how Hawkins protected Joie both physically and emotionally. Who doesn't love a guy who stands up for his girl? Hawkins is definitely a moody musician. He gets jealous easy, is quickly possessive, and flicks through moods like a magazine.

Verdict: Good - don't read the sequel.

2024 review - I still enjoyed reading this book as much as I have in the past but now that I’m older and slightly more mature I can definitely tell that it’s written in a more immature way. Multiple phrases are repeated that felt out of place and while the suspense is there, the comeback from the suspense seem quite fast. I love the enemies to lovers arc, especially with a rockstar and the storyline itself I adore but for the way the book reads I have to lower the rating. I will say it’s more of a 3.5 than a 3 but that is unfortunately not an option!

This book is one of my favorites. I love that its a longer ish book, so it takes me a little longer to read {even though I could read it in a day}. I LOVE the romance in it between Hawkins + Joie and their love / hate relationship at the beginning / middle. Then there is the suspense part. The 'grimm reaper' will keep you on the edge of your seats, needing more. The storyline seems kinda cliche at first, teenage girl following a band, but it's really not. at all. It's different than most books where girls fall in love with lead singers of bands. I can't even describe it. I've read this twice so far, and even the second time I read it, I could not put it down. Amazing book.

riley is Joie's gay best friend. he looks like an abercrombie model and really is rhe best friend a girl could hhave. he's protective of Joie and tries to be brave even when he is scared to death.

I really like this book except for the editing errors. Anyhow, I love the characters, J.T. and the Grimm Brothers Band. Joie and her BFFs (Riley is great but Lizzie is such a cunning b***h). I think Joie should have put Lizzie in her place earlier in the book. I love the banter between J.T. and Joie and their tweets and blogs about/against each other. Their love and hate relationship is very entertaining. The books starts as a fun, light hearted romance but it has suspense in it too, like when the stalker of the band strikes. You would think the reason of the stalker is because he loves the band so much but, the root of it is a little deeper than that. There are moments when I go, “Really? Really?!” while reading this book but for the majority of the part, I was laughing out loud.

I don't know what's wrong with me!! Because lately I've been crying in a lot of the books I'm reading, and I cried in this one too!! I'm not even sure if it's worth it, but I'm sleepy as fuck so that might be the reason.

Hmmm to put it simply, I loved this book! It made me laugh, swoon, and scared the crap out of me in the last 40% or so. I would definitely recommend people to read this, I seriously needed something like this after reading captive in the dark, and I'm supposed to be doing the bookTubAthon and this wasn't even on the list, I just read the description and said to hell with it, this seems like something I would like, and was certainly not disappointed!
So grab this book people and start reading it!

Based on the cover, I thought it was a typical teen love story.

I say that the book is well written because the author was able to evoke the right feelings or perception for each character. I was annoyed with Liz and was touched by Riley loyalty. The writer was able to establish the characters really well that the flow of the story is believable and engaging.

I liked that it is a mix of love story and mystery since I tend to favor the latter. I did suspect Cyrus as the Grimm reaper. At first I thought that the pacing was too fast since because I was only half way through the book and the main "villain" was revealed, but all in all I liked the way the story unfolded.

The writing style of this book has potential, her characters were engaging and I identified with them, however, there were jumps that I just couldn't follow and I just don't get texting rather than ringing in an emergency situation. Many times the characters did something outside of their relationship and I though - why? Within the relationship it was good but the story just wasn't enough.

Really enjoyed this one. The relationship between the h/h was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the humorous tone the book was written in. It almost had a chick-lit vibe to it, although it was definitely more romance oriented.

Was the writing trash, yes. Were the characters predictable and one dimensional double yes. But did I have a blast reading it? Yep. It was surprisingly fun even though the main character is a special little I’m not like other girls Mary sue snowflake and her bestie is for sure not a girls girl. It was entertaining to say the least.

There is a mystery at hand which kept me intrigued but the writing of each and every action scene was beyond all atrocious.

So if you’re looking for a low stakes silly adventure rockstar romance and borderline mid tier book this is for you.
