Steve was born in London, England. He holds a BA degree in Biology and English from Castleton State College in Vermont. He has worked as a ranger in a number of national parks and is the author of over 30 children's books. His extensive travels to faraway lands such as Africa and treks through Yellowstone have all influenced his book projects. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published Steve’s book Sea Turtle Scientist in 2014. His most recent title is from Scholastic and entitled Safe in a Storm, a comforting read-aloud story, where all the animals find cozy places to keep them safe and warm. Steve visits nearly a hundred schools a year across the United States as well as many international schools. He lives in Vermont with his wife Heather, two dogs named Scout and Jem, and a cat named Skittles.
Despite the dated photographs, this is a great title for shadows. The concept is simply and clearly explained, then shadows of all different kinds are shown for kids to guess. I liked how the text talks about shadows lengthening and shortening depending on the light.
This book explains what a shadow is and shows some very very basic examples. Your audience should be young or new to the idea of a shadow. There was much potential to do some intriguing things with shadows, but the moment was not seized.
This book had some great information for kids to start exploring and understanding their shadows in the sun. The pictures were taken decades ago in either the 70's or early 80's and I'm surprised that my kids didn't seem to notice.
Learning about shadows has never been more fun! In addition to a guessing game, I appreciate how this book provides the reader, or listener, with simple facts about shadows. At times, introducing topics to children can be challenging, especially because you do not want to overwhelm them with too much information at once. This is a great introduction that starts off slow and gets the kids involved and interacting with the reader and each other. I absolutely plan on reading this book during story times.

Read for Storytime, February 1st Theme: Groundhogs and shadows
I love using this book for storytime! It is a great picture book style non-fiction book. There is a sequence on the middle of the book that lets the kids guess the shadow. They loved it!
