Basketball. The court, the ball, the hoop. The hopes, the dreams, the sweat. It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and the Shohoku High hoops team wants to be just that—the best. They have one last year to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true—will they do it? Takehiko Inoue's legendary basketball manga is finally here, and the tale of a lifetime is in your hands!
Sakuragi Hanamichi's got no game with girls—none at all! It doesn't help that he's known for throwing down at a moment's notice and always coming out on top. A hopeless bruiser, he's been rejected by 50 girls in a row! All that changes when he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko, and she's actually not afraid of him! When she introduces him to the game of basketball, his life is changed forever...
Slamdunk is a golden example on how you introduce an excellent manga series. While balancing humor, story and basketball, Takehiko Inoue I believe perfectly executed two things that make his sports manga series stand out: first is characterization and the other, panel study.
Inoue nailed it in introducing (most of) the main characters as colorful as possible in the most efficient way, giving them personalities that are highly likeable despite their quirks and imperfections. Central to that of course is our red-headed protagonist Sakuragi, who is way more annoying, dedicated and hilarious than the one we have seen in the anime! Inoue made sure that Sakuragi and basketball will always be the central point in the series.
The panels are carefully constructed. They are funny when things are supposed to be goofy and awe-inspiringly serious when the plot needs to.
Growing up, Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk was an anime that has truly captured my imagination. Primarily because it features a basketball playing protagonist and the sport is entwined into the socio-cultural fabric of Philippine society. I frequently saw myself as Hanamichi Sakuragi, especially the way he bumbled around learning to play the sport.
The source material, the manga has the more complete story as the animated series covered only around two-thirds of it. We may never know the reason why such creative decision was made. This only made the 31-volume series required reading for the Slam Dunk fan.
I recently started on rereading the entire series again and this time, I'll be documenting my progress here on Goodreads.
The first volume is as funny as I remembered it. It has always been a gut-busting laugh every time I read it.
The rating is for the first volume. The review is for the whole series.
This manga is (arguably) the most popular basketball sport manga. Even after more than a decade, I haven't found a better sport manga for the art or for keeping thrilling matches (especially THE final match of the manga).
I don't know what manga that started it, but it is popular to start a sport manga by telling juvenile delinquent theme for multi volumes before switching into sport theme. Slam Dunk used this approach too. I personally don't like this approach, that's why I gave 3 star for first volume. And there is the mandatory silly jokes by silly characters at the beginning.
After endure the delinquent theme, the sport theme of this manga is still one of the best! Even with the formulaic matches (I believe many of the sport manga fans can predict which games the protagonist team will lost), the thrilling is still working for me.
.
But if I see the sport plot, I saw flaws. For examples: There is an opponent that introduced but then unused for the main story; in another extreme, there was not enough background for some tough opponents.
In conclusion, I recommend this sport manga. This is one of the classic in sport manga.
This book has so much personality. The main character is so expressive and so sincere in his feelings. On top of that, the facial expressions that the artist draws are so hilarious. I laughed out loud several times just from the art itself.
Hilarious! I’m such a sucker for sports anime/manga. Sakuragi and his gang reminded me of Josuke and Okayasu from Jojo part 4 and those iconic meme worthy facial expressions - of One Piece. Definitely going to continue with this series.
Oh, this brought back some sweet memories. I enjoyed every single moment of reading this manga. I also had a much needed laughter. So excited to read the remaining volumes 😁
I remember watching Slam Dunk’s anime back in 2019 and was throughly enjoyed it. Of course others down the years talking about the series, literally spoiled the rest for me to read it all. At least I managed to read it all in one go this time than “Vagabond” which was one I never read before by Inoue-sensei. As a non basketball fan, you still would root for the character Hanamichi to win every basketball game he partakes and woo the girl of his dreams. Character development was good like Rukawa was a interesting sort for being a cold oddball but attractive guy that you want to get to know more! However although it seems like a simple story, he has come far so much from being a delinquent to a talented basketball player.
This is definitely considered one of the most decent sports manga series out there for any sports or even non-sports fan out there like yours truly, to binge read. It’s long and old skool but it really captures the way how basketball works in general!
This is probably gonna become one of my favorite mangas of all time because omg I couldn't stop reading it once I started it and it's so fun seeing the focus on Sakuragi and his antics and the humor here is so good and you will laugh out loud and his quest to impress this girl Haruko who seems to sweet talk with him and what happens next and their equation is solid and then the way he tries to impress her and then her crush on someone else and how he gets roped into a basketball match with the captain of the team whose her brother lol!
I just love this manga so much, it's so humorous and has some great character scenes and explaining about basketball and solid support characters and setting up a lot of arcs already and a great main lead who will make you laugh, and whose stubborn and persistent and whose journey to become the greatest basketball ball player will be awesome to read about!!
Slam Dunk popularised basketball not only in Japan but it spread through entire Asia. It pioneered new visual and narrative techniques in the genre of sports manga. A truly legendary manga. I've never watched the anime or whatsoever. Enjoyed the first volume a lot. Interesting and very funny.
This..I have to say is an ABSOLUTE PURE CLASSIC for Manga/Comic.
Even if you're not a fan of basketball or any sort of sports, this is not to be missed.
It begins with a red-haired super tall freshman delinquent, Sakuragi Hanamichi who happens to been rejected by 50 girls. Seriously 50?? That's a record! LOL
Anyway, he was madly head over heels when he met Akagi Haruko. Haruko was so taken by Sakuragi's physique and thought that he could be the saviour for the School's Basketball team (her older brother, is the captain).
Thinking that she's the one, Sakuragi agrees to join the basketball team in order to win her heart.
But there's a problem......
Sakuragi knows nothing about basketball!! He only knows how to fight!
But his determination to learn (boy he is a super fast learner..but hey, this is a manga. Anything is possible) took everyone by surprise. It's all thanks a freshman Ace, Rukawa Kaede.
You see Sakuragi hates Rukawa all because his angel, Haruko is madly in love with him...(note that Rukawa doesn't even care about others but basketball). This also lead to constant bickering between the two sportmen and it never gets old! Surprise cos I'd usually would get sick after a while.
Along the whole series (I think it was 31 vols all together and I owned the whole series along with 4 side complementing manga based on a short movie anime of it - (I owned the Malay edition version btw).
In this manga, we get to learn the ups and downs to be the best of the best in sports (basketball in this case) as well as some painful life journey by a certain former Ace and how he bounce back. Growth by the rest of the characters and of course, crazy humour/antiques thanks to the red-haired Sakuragi himself!
Although physical characteristic of the characters are so over the top...A red-haired Japanese? (OK maybe he dyed his). But a basketball captain who looks like an African descend (even his skin tone gives that off) while his sister is adorably passable Japanese? (He could be adopted..no?)
OK who cares?... This is a top notch! I've never enjoyed this series as much as other mangas I've came across. It always brings laughter to me whenever I'm down. Not to mention, this is shonen genre which is targeted to boys and I'm a girl! OK, maybe One Piece came a close second.
[Note: this is a review of the entire Slam Dunk series, not just the first volume.]
Slam Dunk is an unparalleled expression of the shounen manga that captures the hearts of readers in a way no other shounen manga before it has done and none after it is likely to do. The series relies on the tried and true tropes and patterns of shounen manga. We have a hot-blooded protagonist, cool and arrogant anti-hero, and slightly nuanced variations of these and other archetypes. What makes Slam Dunk so great is that it uses these familiar elements with scientific accuracy to keep the reader turning pages.
Sakuragi is an extremely compelling protagonist despite his archetypal nature. He's not simply an apparent underdog with amazing powers, but his lack of refinement gives readers a more meaningful picture of his progression which goes alongside with his character development. The other characters are, likewise, textured and relatable.
While many shounen manga falter and fail at the last minute, Slam Dunk remains strong until the end, delivering one of the most satisfying conclusions in manga history. For people who absolutely hate the familiar feeling of a shounen manga, this series probably won't change your mind. But any interest at all in shounen manga makes this series essential reading.
Having next to zero knowledge about basketball, I didn't expect this manga to intrigue me so. Providing not only shonen humor, amazing characters, vibrant artwork, but also knowledge of basketball as the story progresses, Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk is a milestone in sports manga.
Turns out watching basketball in stills is almost as fun as watching it in motion. I watched Kuroko's Basketball before reading Slam Dunk and already I can tell Slam Dunk is gonna be the more satisfying story. No insanely overpowered basketball demigorgons, and I can conceivably see myself doing some of the things that the players in Slam Dunk do in games, aside from ... slam dunks (5' 6" on a good day). It's definitely crazy and interesting to read the manga that made basketball popular not just in Japan, but East/Southeast Asia in general (my parents even recognized this shit). You can tell Inoue loves the NBA and culture that came from it with each panel -- the hyper-realistic drawings of Jordan 6's, name-dropping stars like MJ and Kareem, and even the players themselves. Shohoku's center Akagi was modeled after Patrick Ewing (down to the hair), and Sakuragi (defensive rebounding stalwart) was modeled after Dennis Rodman. The anime even has jersey colors copied straight from NBA teams -- Shohoku has the Chicago reds for example.
It's sometimes funny to see simple things like defensive double teams be hyped up like the second coming of Christ, but it's wholesome and genuine at the same time. Slam Dunk readers learn about basketball at the same time as the red pompadour hero Sakuragi. Gotta love it!
I stopped recording manga on gr, but making exception for this absolute banger, classic and page turner that paved the way for many others <3
I’m leaving link for this cool video, if anyone wants to hear more about the true impact of Slam Dunk.
This is my third (?) time rereading this series and, oh my god, every time it just hits the spot!!!
Little bit about our MC (who I absolutely adore) - Sakuragi is hot-headed anti-hero with a heart of gold. He sticks out like a sore thumb with his red hair, he is famous first year hooligan in desperate need of a girlfriend, and his impulsive nature gets him to encounter captain of basketball team. Next thing you know, Sakuragi emerges himself wholeheartedly into the world of slam dunks, rebounds, shoots, and fouls.
Even if you don’t watch basketball or any other sports (like me), but you like your manga (even if you don’t read manga, this is your time) with some of this elements: action, drama, comedy, coming of age, high school setting, going thru trenches to better yourself, unyielding love for that one thing in your life, comradery, dynamic story paneling, silly MC that joins basketball club because of the girl he likes (fun fact: author of the Slam Dunk started playing basketball for the same reason)… this one is for you my friend!!
That being said, now that I’m older and more critical with media that I consume, I wish characters were more well-rounded. (Note to myself: I wonder if Inoue's seinen manga Real provides this aspect of the story? At this point I haven't read author's other works, but they are high on my tbr.) We never get to know them that much outside of the basketball court and school setting. Main focus is basketball and character’s constant improvement, which fair, this is shonen, I get it. I enjoyed it nevertheless because of the lovable and diverse cast of characters and Inoue’s power to cast a spell on reader with his art and story. That ending of the final game?! Sakuragi and Rukawa being magic duo!! UNREAL!! SHIVERS BABY!!
Other things I really appreciate: - games are somewhat realistic (anyone that is familiar with this genre knows there is tendency to incorporate fantasy elements when stakes are getting too high/to further down the storyline (@ Kuroko’s Basketball, Blue Lock)) - reader gets to learn rules in an appropriate pace - physical injuries (and recovery) are BIG deal and constant reminder that their sports careers can be over in an instant - Inoue's is funny AF, thirty years later and the comedy still holds up - (next thing makes me go feral) even so-called "prodigies" have breakable bodies and can fail and in need of a rigorous training and strong mindset.
Also, this story has relatively happy ending? It’s more bittersweet and ambiguous, but that is just another aspect that makes this story so great.
Loads of laughter and a protagonist with potential, it probably shouldn’t have taken me so long to pick this up.
Order of review - Summary - Thoughts
SUMMARY Sakuragi Hanamichi is a hopeless bruiser who isn’t known for much among his peers – other than getting rejected by girls. But when Haruko, a girl he takes a liking to, introduces him to basketball, it awakens something within him.
Genre: sports manga (demographic: shounen)
THOUGHTS There’s not much to say seeing as I’m only one volume in and you’ll also notice I haven’t included how much knowledge of basketball is needed to enjoy this, simply because we haven’t got to those bits yet.
Regardless, I will say that I got quite a few laughs out of this and Hanamichi is an interesting protagonist to follow along with his crew of friends who’re always in the background.
The art style is refreshing (I haven’t read much manga from the 90s so bear with me) and the sequencing is pretty easy to follow as well.
I’m a little impatient to get to the “basketball bits” but the set up that Takehiko Inoue is doing with the characters and setting is interesting to read and will no doubt come to fruition later on.
This graphic novel, "Slam Dunk" is the best comic book I ever read. This book is funny, and it shows how Sakuragi Hanamichi learned to play basketball to impress a girl. I think that this book is good for people who love sport and love old, Japanese manga. This book made me laugh and it will for other people. I love the pictures, and I think that other people will love it too. Everyone should read this book "Slam Dunk" and then read the other series.
I remember when at college, I had an exam where we could use as many textbooks as we could carry, and my friends shocked with my bulging bag, tried to find out what kind of books I brought.
And it turned out to be these Slam Dunk mangas which I borrowed from book-rental ( ̄ ̄|||)
What can I say~ I need refreshment while doing an exam!
