Look at these sweet skinless, fleshy titans, I want one as a pet

Looking forward to more backstory exploration
I can hardly remember a case where a mysterious worldbuilding and background event is so obviously and huge put in the main focus. One more great example of how Chekhovs and MacGuffins can be used in ridiculously giant ways.

Digging deeper into behemoths flesh
The symbolic aspect of this shouldn´t be underestimated, let´s say Japanese and general East Asian isolationism during the last centuries. And in most of these cases, the monsters won because of technological and military superiority. Without the specific Asian focus, it could also be seen as a general metaphor, allegory, or just freaking deep message about xenophobia, building walls, and fearing everything foreign.

Medieval feelings with grains of demonic megalomania
The setting is just perfect, because people like their genres, especially fantasy and not so hard science fantasy, without too many techy elements. Sci fi fans like me are more tolerant regarding some wizards and dwarfs in their worldbuilding, but fantasy heads are often a bit fastidious regarding their genre soup.

Perfect military division for maximal plot options
By mixing infantry, reconnaissance units, and military police, there aren´t just a lot of war and battle, but also story complexity tuning opportunities. I guess this will develop into and accelerate forward to some great, more character than plot driven, fights for power between the already losing humans.

Nom noming in manga horrorland
It´s one of the most graphic and dark mangas I´ve read so far, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, and a little bit of Full Metal Alchemist are dark fantasy too, but this one is especially disturbing because of the amazing quality of the art. So maybe not for everyone, but for special people like me, who are into darkness and invite gore, torture, and human suffering in their already struggling souls to feed them with the screams of the dying, a great entertainment.

Tropes show how literature is conceptualized and created and which mixture of elements makes works and genres unique:

Honestly speaking?

I didn't think I'd love this manga SO MUCH

I dived in because I wanted to watch the anime, but felt the need to read it first... Then it just blew me away. I loved everything about this manga... the rawness, the gore... the action...the mystery... omg am just in awe and am eager continue it~~!!!

I havent had a manga hold my attention for a while to such an extent (apart from usual obsession of those I keep up with xD)

Ah~!!

This is a really good story, and the art is amazing, but be prepared. This is some dark stuff. It's listed as YA, but in my opinion it probably shouldn't be. It is listed as horror so at least there's that. I mean, people are getting eaten left and right so it's a little rough if you are emotionally sensitive, or get attached to characters easily. If so, I would say this book isn't for you. The characters are fascinating, and I'm hoping we will see more of their backstories in future volumes. I love how each person is completely different. They all have distinct personalities, and the art is impeccable, so it's easy to tell them apart. For once there weren't any panels I was confused on, or struggled to understand. It was wonderful. As an added bonus, the world itself is intriguing, and from reading the extras, it seems like it's going to get more fleshed out as the series goes on. I highly recommend this series to all of my fellow lovers of the horror genre, however I would stick to ages 16+.

Well, damn. This was grim...
These drawings were horrifyingly brutal and some scenes truly gave me shivers.

I’m really curious to learn more about this world and these characters, and I hope to see a lot more development in future installments.

That ending genuinely shocked me beyond anything I anticipated, so I’m not sure what to expect at this point…. but I can’t wait to find out.

In the future overly simplistic stories exploring the Japanese xenophobic mindset will bore you with their complete lack of imagination! The evil Titans (or, “foreigners”) threaten the tiny human population (or, “Japanese”) by eating them (or, “consuming their culture”). The humans live in medieval-type castle structures with multiple layers of walls that don’t work to attempt to protect themselves from the Titans who want to eat them for some reason.

Our hero is the perpetually constipated Some Guy who wants to join the ineffectual Something Corps who go out and get eaten by the Titans sooner rather than live as well as they can inside the large walls before getting eaten later. To combat the Titans, the humans have developed grappling hooks and spears that don’t work - this is set in the future!

Snore as Some Guy and his sister Some Girl fight to become part of the elite Something Corps so they can fail to defeat the TItans first while swinging from hooks like a fairground attraction! Attack on Titan Volume 1 sucks ostrich balls! Do ostriches have balls? Well, Attack on Titan Volume 1 is sure sucking something! Stop molesting those sexy ostriches, Attack on Titan Volume 1!

Marvel as you feel your brain actually punching the inside of your head for subjecting it to this drek and then attempt to escape through your ears! So long, Attack on Titan Volume 1, you were a total waste of time!

Cannibalistic giants that are almost impossible to kill...mankind reduced to cities behind walls...a massive attack forces young warriors band together to fight a stalling battle - WOW - not for the faint of heart! All of my friends who are really into manga told me to read this; super creepy for sure! Can see why so many people are into this!

2nd reading: You know what, I liked this a little bit more after reading it again. It's possible that the crap I read before this made this seem better overall ... but, meh. Not bad.

~

Original review:
I don't know man ... I finished this and started on the second volume and I feel like this might be one of those instances where I just don't get the hype. I also don't understand how this is already up to 11 volumes when (some spoilers for volume 2 as well)

I don't think the art is particularly good, and while the story is pretty unique, I was kind of bored, honestly. Everyone is going nuts for the anime and I even started the first episode though got distracted halfway through and stopped watching for some reason and never went back. What I watched though was pretty much scene-by-scene for what happened in the manga, though I'm not sure how long the anime stays like that.

I found the main character brash, whiny, and annoying, and the fact that he's prone to shouting and going nuts didn't endear him to me at all. The other characters were practically faceless/nameless to me and completely forgettable, except for Mikasa (thanks, FREEBIRD.) She's a badass and should be the real main character,

I guess a part of me wasn't really paying attention that this is dystopia, because I'm not a big fan of the genre at all and would normally just steer clear of it. The fact that this isn't clicking with me could be my own fault, since dystopia almost never entertains me. So many people were talking about the manga and the anime though that I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and that's not always the greatest idea.

I don't know, I might give this through volume 3 before I drop it, just because it's so popular and I'd hate to miss out on something that turns out to be spectacular. No way am I reading all of it though if I just end up feeling the same way after three books. I'm glad it has its fans though and that a series that breaks the mold is doing so well, but I have a feeling this might not be for me.

I didn't think that this would be as good as anime (because anime is bloody fantastic), but it was. I loved the art style, characters and above all amazing and brutal story.

Trash That Works

Formulaic? Crude? Amateurish? Appalling? Yes, definitely, all of the above. Make no mistake, this series falls squarely into the trash category. Not tongue-in-cheek-I-am-actually-so-above-this pseudo trash, but just plain trash. I mean, this guy tries hard but simply isn't the most gifted of artists. And yet - somehow - he has been able to capture the imagination of millions around the world with this story centered around an eerie mystery: Who are those "titans" that have nearly wiped out humanity? Where do they come from? What do they want? Apart from eating human beings, that is.

People have known for more than a hundred years that the titans are out there, but they have buried their own heads in the sand, barricaded themselves behind high walls. Out of sight, out of mind. Now those walls are crumbling, and the threat can no longer be ignored! Thankfully, our young heroes finally take action - and as it turns out, countless young readers around the world can relate to the desire to restore human dignity and, yes, save the world: "Finally we can be useful," as Krista puts it just before the battle starts.

A key element that makes Attack on Titan so popular is its openness, I think: a wide range of meanings can be attached to those all-devouring "titans" that threaten the survival of the human species. Do they represent the processes of globalization? Corporate power? The mass media? The government? Or yet another oppressive development or institution? Once you have made up your mind, you'll probably find yourself cheering for our young heroes.

So I'm finally using my three-dimensional gear to jump on this bandwagon, at long last, and what a wild ride it is!

After what seems a slow start but still an interesting world-build, the emotional impact is still severe and bone-crunchingly immediate. There's usually never a warning before someone you love dies, but it's doubly so here.

The manga has a very serious tone and it wears its heart on its sleeve.

The ending of this volume is very strong, but honestly, I am not entirely certain I like the artwork that much.

In full honesty, I already know a lot of the story because I just did a marathon of the Anime, but because of how it left off, I'm now in a tear to know what happens. :) So, just to be clear, the Anime is a top-notch production and deserves tons of accolades. I'm pretty sure this manga will step-up, too, so I'm remaining patient.

I might not have continued this manga under other circumstances. :)

4/5

I remember that four or five years ago I watched every episode of Attack on Titan that was available at the time — okay, maybe I didn't watch it, I devoured it in less than a week because I was in love with them — and I promised myself that I would read the manga someday, but then final exams and my first year of college came around, so I kind of forgot about it. I don't know why it took me so long to remember this promise and finally pick up the manga, but I'm glad my love — or more like obsession, for this story hasn't waned since then. I literally can't wait to devour all the volumes this summer.

I love how Mikasa, Armin, and Eren (especially Eren) were just small innocent beans. I also didn't know how I missed Hannes until I read about him again. I love almost everything from this book!

¡Brutal!

4.5 Stars!
I have always felt that the giants in fiction today are starting to become bumbling, stupid fools that just happen to be oversized and love destroying things, stripped of the fear they held around them a long time ago. So whenever I see this wildly popular manga series online or in the bookstore, I think nothing of it and pass by it. That is, until the anime adaption started airing this year and I saw the opening. And that opening was just so glorious that I just had to at least try out the first volume of Attack on Titan.

After reading the first volume, I couldn’t help but think of myself as an idiot for ignoring this title. Hajime Isayama has completely went above my expectations with his portrayal of the giants, or titans in this manga. These monsters aren’t intelligent but they actually make that up with their extreme brute force and numbers, causing humans to go down in the food chain and become prey. The humans are constantly losing battles against the titans, losing hope, and losing dignity, later retreating inside a wall that is no more than a cage in humiliation, only to have it be broken down one hundred years later, right when the people inside it are starting to feel safe and peaceful . Hopefully the mangaka keeps writing the titans in this way.

There are always people who don’t like gore and nudity, so I feel the need to talk about how those things come into play in this manga… There isn’t much gore in this manga so far as I’ve seen in other manga, but there is definitely a lot of dead bodies shown and the necessary gushing of blood whenever a titan slaughters and eats a human. Although, manga is in black and white so I don’t think that this should take away someone’s enjoyment of the series. Also, while the giants are naked, they can’t reproduce sexually, meaning they don’t have sex organs (thank God). So for the people like me who don’t like excessive nudity don’t have to worry… Unless Isayama spontaneously decides to change that…

As of this first volume, my favorite aspect is the wonderfully realistic depiction of emotion that Isayama write and draw. Screaming and crying isn’t just inserted, but is executed in a powerful way that made me want to cry also. Like that scene when the only surviving members of the scouting legion that come back from a mission outside the wall and a mother finds out that only her son’s hand is with them, or that scene when Eren finds his mother stuck under a pile of rumble that was their house before the titans broke through the wall, is carried away from her, and watches as she is killed by a titan. Both those scenes and others were beautifully executed in a way that only made it more terribly emotional.

The characters are great and I am really invested in their story of fighting back and survival. One of two male leads, Eren, does have the common motive of trying to avenge his mother’s death by crushing and killing all of the enemy and also has a desire to escape from the confines he is currently under, but it doesn’t matter if the motive is common in fiction if it is done well, and it is in this manga. Armin, the other male lead, is very weak and hates himself for that, ignoring all his other good qualities. Again, it has been done before but is written well. I’m really looking forward to reading about his growth. And like Eren, he also has a desire to escape from inside the wall. Mikasa isn’t at all like many other females in the shounen genre. She hasn’t had much page-time yet, but she is clearly a person who is tough and won’t be a damsel in distress.

Attack of Titan‘s current side characters are not exactly memorable and really only serve as characters to help out the main three and to get eaten. I’m not exactly a fan of this but it is kind of required as this manga is all about titans and humans battling. But this is the first volume, and If the side characters do get a more important role than their current one, my love for this manga is only going to increase.

Isayama also includes a couple of lovely pages that give information on how the wall was constructed and how the equipment the characters use to fight the titans work. It’s all very thought out and I appreciate that a lot.

The art is hand-drawn and it shows quite a bit. Not that that is a bad thing. The backgrounds are wonderfully detailed, as well as the characters. I do think that the body proportions are a little off sometimes, especially in the beginning, which is when the characters are children. But the flawed drawings of the humans are immediately made up for with how the titans are drawn. They are incredibly unsettling, many of them having mouths that are set into huge grins, never turning into anything else. The colossal titan is the most remarkable as it is literally only muscle, bones, and teeth.

Attack of Titan‘s first volume is an extremely good beginning and introduction to what the mangaka is able to do. If the utter brilliance of this manga continues, well, I dare say that it might be able to tie with Pandora Hearts as my favorite manga and might even beat it. I know that this might be too early to start assuming things, but I am seriously impressed. Also, that cliffhanger is freaking genius.

“On that day, mankind received a grim reminder. We lived in fear of the Titans and were disgraced to live in these cages we called walls.”

3.5 stars.

Eren Yeager and his family have lived on the interior side of the wall for all their life, they have no clue as to what the outside world looks like. The outside world, is inhabited by a colossal group of Titans who intend to bring mankind into extinction! The 50 metres tall wall which has kept the people safe for so long is now no longer reliable…The titans have found a way to storm in and devour human beings that get in their way with the most satisfying crunch (the snapping of bones mhm). Okay I’ll stop before this review gets any weirder!

Overall I loved the plot of this manga and the illustrations were fearsome! Specifically the one of the Titans! I certainly recommend this!

“Channel the anger swelling inside you
Fighting the boundary 'till you break through
Deep in your soul there's no hesitation
So make yourself the one they all fear

There is a wild fire inside you
Burning desire you can't extinguish
Your crimson arrow
Rips through the twilight
This is the moment for war!”

This is a review of the entire series.

Attack on Titan takes place in a horrifying dystopian fantasy world that somewhat mirrors our own, like an apocalyptic Europe where the last remnants of humanity live behind massive, skyscraper-sized walls to protect themselves from the giant, man-eating monsters known as Titans lurking just beyond them. The walls have successfully protected humanity for a hundred years, yet that short era of false peace comes to an end when a colossal titan bigger and deadlier than any other of its kind brings judgement to the last survivors of the world. The story follows an ambitious and hotheaded young boy named Eren Yeager, who vows to take revenge on the titans after they break down the walls of his city, killing his mother and thousands of innocent people right before his very eyes.

The story begins with Eren having a disturbing nightmare. At first, the nightmare appears to be a senseless series of violent images that don’t seem to mean anything in particular and the images we see are quite easy to forget about when you view them without any kind of context. It’s not until a hundred chapters later that the nightmare and the events that follow it begin to come together. Incredible foreshadowing is a reoccurring thing in Attack on Titan. The most minor and seemingly insignificant characters and events always end up having major significance much later down the road. The further you get into the series, the more you begin to realize that the author had every single plot point, revelation and twist planned out before he ever even published the first chapter. Speaking of which, the name of the first chapter (to you, 2000 years from now) is a huge foreshadowing in itself, but we’ll touch on that later.

After Eren wakes up from his nightmare, we are introduced to Armin and Mikasa. Armin is Eren’s best friend and he fills Eren’s head with dreams of seeing the outside world beyond the walls, telling him stories of oceans, deserts, mountains, volcanoes and all sorts of things they could never imagine witnessing with their own eyes if they continue to spend the rest of their lives hiding in mundane safety behind the walls. Armin is frail and timid, but he’s incredibly smart and proves his worth as a brilliant tactician. He’s also very loyal and protects his friends when the going gets tough.

Mikasa is Eren’s adopted sister who watches over him and comes to the rescue whenever he’s in trouble using her superhuman combat abilities, a signature trait of the Ackerman bloodline that’s been passed down to her by her warrior ancestors. After their relatively peaceful lives are torn apart by a titan invasion, Eren, Armin and Mikasa enlist themselves in the survey corp, an organization of soldiers and tacticians that are trained in the art of killing titans and defending civilians from their wrath using a pair of swords and a device known as 3D Maneuver Gear.

The 3D Maneuver Gear was created to be able to navigate through a three dimensional space. With it, a person can travel from point to point at extremely fast speeds by firing steel wires with hooks attached on the ends so they can latch onto structures and titans. This is a very unique way of portraying tiny humans being able to stand a chance against giant titans in combat. The weakness of all titans is the nape of the neck, and the only way to reach the nape is to perform all kinds of twists and turns in midair with the maneuver gear until you can give yourself an opening.

After being put through years of brutal military training, Eren and his friends are prepared to lay their lives on the line to exterminate every last titan in the world and bring freedom to humanity once more. But Eren doesn’t yet realize that he isn’t prepared for the many horrors that lie beyond the walls he grew up in. There’s more than just titans out there that want him and his friends dead.

The biggest strengths of Attack on Titan are the numerous plot twists and the layers of mystery that are evident from the very beginning. Some of the twists are so massive, that they literally change the genre of the entire series because of the new perspectives they bring. It can go from survival horror, to psychological mystery, to political thriller at the drop of a hat and none of it is ever done just for shock value. There isn’t a single twist or plot point that wasn’t already planned out from chapter one. All the pieces of the puzzle are right in front of you the moment you begin reading, you just don’t realize they’re there until much later. Because of the amount of planning ahead at play here, Attack on Titan has a truly impressive level of re-readability. The constantly shifting genres and conflicts is what keeps it fresh and exciting. There are human vs titan conflicts, titan vs other titan conflicts, and finally, there’s the tried and true conflict of humans vs humans.

That’s always been a recurring theme in most dystopian fantasy and horror stories. Even when the world is destroyed and overrun with monsters, humans will still clash and tear each other to pieces. I’m happy to say that the human vs human conflict in Attack on Titan is extremely different from what you would normally expect from a series like this. It’s not like the average zombie apocalypse movie where people kill each other and cause havoc just because there’s no law and they’re free to do whatever the hell they want, there’s a much bigger twist behind the cruelty of the humans pulling the strings from behind the scenes. I won’t delve too deep into that because of spoilers, but let’s just say that there are no real winners or good guys here, morality is extremely gray in Attack on Titan and it only continues to get more complex and conflicted the longer it goes on. Near the very end of the series, I honestly couldn’t bring myself to root for or against anyone, I just watched helplessly from the sidelines as the chaos unfolded. There are so many good characters on every side that it was making my head spin around in circles because I couldn’t decide what the best outcome could possibly be. And I absolutely loved the ridiculous levels of tension this conflict caused.

All in all, I can’t believe how good Attack on Titan turned out to be. Let me just say that the early chapters of the series are extremely misleading and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Just like everything else in this series, the misleading nature of the early chapters is totally intentional. I went into this series expecting a straightforward, action-packed monster movie type of story like Jurassic Park or Godzilla, and it does start out that way to be perfectly fair. But it progresses into one of the most genius stories I’ve ever seen, that’s rich with psychological depth, human morality, countless twists and even quite a bit of intelligent commentary on the unspeakable tragedies of war. Don’t let the simple premise of Attack on Titan fool you, there’s so much more to it than I’m sure anyone could’ve possibly predicted when the series first started being published.

This is a review of the entire series

Back when Attack on Titan first came out it seemed as though it would be a typical straightforward and sensational shounen, and I was fine with that - it wouldn't be my new favourite thing, but it was enjoyable and had an interesting setting. In later volumes, however, it pleasantly surprised me with how dark it got, how well it handled complex themes, and how grey even the main characters had become. Now fast forward to me forgetting about all ongoing manga I used to read, coming back to them, and then not reading the ending of aot for months after the series had already ended. By this point, I knew most people weren't happy with the way it ended, but I thought 20ish chapters wasn't enough to completely ruin a series. Even if the ending turned out to be bad, it still wouldn't affect my enjoyment of the series as a whole, right? Well... Hajime Isayama has proved me wrong; one can indeed ruin a series of over a hundred chapters in the last few dozen (granted, it had been going downhill with the real world parallels since the basement reveal, and I also found out about the author's harmful views).

A solid start of a serie seeped in blood and ripped limps galore

I get the end of the Dark Tower vibes with this opening of Eren waking up crying from a dream at the start of the series, hoping very much I am a bit paranoid with 33 parts still to go.

This basement reveal being teased is so unfair. As Eren’s dad says: There’s no holding back an inquisitive mind. 😒
And how humanity got into this pickle in the first place is also something I have loads of questions on.

Mikasa the bad-ass, she is shaping up to be my favorite character by far.

The mom scene in the anime scarred me permanently, in writing I am better suited to handling something terrible like that.

Eren is annoying in his conviction (even starting a speech with “I have a dream”) but a well rendered teenager in a way, one could say

Grim ending, quite impossible not to read on!

As if the fandoms that I'm in weren't enough, I'm getting myself into more fandoms.
Attack on Titan was entirely an 'out of comfort' manga and experience for me and even though it confused a lot of times, I ended up liking it.
