Kimberlé Crenshaw (also writes as Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw) is a professor of law at UCLA and Columbia Law School. A leading authority on civil rights, black feminist legal theory, and racism and the law, she is a co-editor of Critical Race Theory (The New Press). Crenshaw is a contributor to Ms. Magazine, The Nation, and the Huffington Post. She lives in Los Angeles.

Reading her famous essay on intersectionality was one of those "consciousness changing" moments for me as an undergrad. I just stumbled on a pdf of it online, which reminded me that I never read anything else of hers...so I will rectify that shortly...

Une lecture qui permet de bien comprendre le principe de l’intersectionnalité. Contrairement à ce que certains opinions véhiculés laissent penser, il ne s’agit pas d’une idéologie plus qu’une façon de « cartographier » les différents systèmes qui peuvent discriminer quelqu’un. Ce faisant, il est beaucoup plus facile de prendre en compte la totalité des oppressions pour trouver des solutions qui ne minent pas un groupe particulier — dans ce cas, on parle de l’exemple des femmes noires. Malheureusement, comme les autres femmes racisées, elles ont trop souvent laissées pour compte par les féministes qui laissent leur cause aux antiracistes, et inversement. Cela provoque un vide dans le support/la lutte et augmente le fardeau du groupe.

Crenshaw utilise un vocabulaire précis pour bien expliquer son concept. J’apprécie qu’il soit issu d’une perspective juridique, étant donné l’énorme impact que l’intersectionnalité a dans ce milieu — et de l’efficacité du jargon du droit pour mettre au jour un tel principe. Si parfois l’autrice peut se répéter, la lecture reste pour le moins essentielle pour quiconque voudrait réellement comprendre le fondement technique de l’intersectionnalité. Cependant, si vous êtes déjà familier, ce livre ne risque pas du vous en apprendre outre dans quelques subtilités.

I read this freshman year of college and still return to this because I was that moved. Still am. This was an assigned reading, a “textbook” that I rented, but loved so much I went out and bought. 💛 It was the first book that really opened my eyes to the intricacies of systemic racism and sexism and what I can do to educate myself to do better.

Kimberle Crenshaw is…powerful. Amazing. I try to read everything she publishes.
She writes in a way that can be understood, yet her words never lack depth. Highly recommend for those who would like to dip their toes into what intersectionality is and how it plays a vital role in dismantling the harmful systems in place.

Kimberlé Crenshaw est la première théoriciennne de l'intersectionnalité. Son métier de juriste la place dans une position particulièrement privilégiée pour aborder ce phénomène à la fois sous l'angle sociologique et sous l'angle juridique. Ce petit livre reprend ses deux premiers articles, publiés en 1989 et au début des années 90. Ce n'est pas une lecture aisée, mais le cheminement des idées se fait petit à petit, à travers de nombreux exemples, notamment de décisions de justice, ou encore de statistiques des bureaux de police. C'était vraiment très intéressant !

Intéressant, mais beaucoup de phrases obscures écrites dans un jargon juridique qui au final n'exprimaient pas leur but si bien que ça. Ça reste un ouvrage clé néammoins.

Un essai intéressant sur le concept d intersectionnalité qui regroupe à la fois les luttes féministes au regard du sexe, de la classe sociale et de la race.
Sur le plan intellectuel, l ouvrage est riche. On y apprend notamment la différence de traitement judiciaire entre races au regard du viol. C est édifiant.
Mais en pratique, l auteur donne assez peu de pistes sur comment articuler ce concept théorique à des politiques publiques pratiques.
Aujourd'hui encore, ce concept est traité de façon marginale dans les politiques publiques françaises, il reste toujours mieux reconnu par le milieu associatif.

This is a life changing text and also probably one of the most important pieces of feminist writing of all time. Crenshaw is unfathomably brilliant and this work was what brought the idea of intersectional feminism to the forefront of the Western feminist consciousness. Everyone should read this regardless of whether or not they are involved in feminist academia.
