Who says getting eaten by a shark is a bad thing?

That Old Black Magic, Book 3

Willa Jameson is having one whopper of an identity crisis. Odd memory flashes that aren’t hers. A sultry voice in her head that’s obsessed with sex. Even weirder, she finds herself in the jaws of a rogue leviathan, dragged to the bottom of the ocean—and rescued by a hunky…shark?

The last thing Sheriff Max Truitt expects to find on his daily, deep-Atlantic patrol is a human—especially one who breathes underwater. Compelled to take her home, he waits for the beauty to wake up and reveal her name. Instead he’s treated to a punch in the nose, then a sexy romp hot enough to boil water.

The next morning, embarrassed by the sizzling, scandalous things the voice in her head drove her to do, Willa slips away. But if there’s one thing a determined shark excels at, it’s tracking his favorite meal.

Solving the mystery that is Willa is no simple task. When they finally unlock a dangerous secret hidden deep in her subconscious, it drives a wedge between them…and puts them in a desperate race against an evil that seeks to rain down a watery Armageddon on all mankind.

Warning: This book does not contain sex with a puffer fish. There’s not even sex with a seahorse. However, there’s plenty of smoking hot lovin’ with a shark. And even a steamy M/F/M threesome. So slap on your snorkels and swim fins, things are about to get wet and wild.

At the ripe age of seven, I penned my first epic, complete with stick figure illustrations. Sadly, my drawing skills haven't improved much, but my love of creating fantasy worlds is still going strong.
Yep, I still love writing about fairies, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures, only my stories pack a little more heat these days.

I currently reside in Michigan with my husband and overgrown lapdog. I'm a member of Romance Writers of America and Greater Detroit Romance Writers of America.

When I'm not writing or working the day job, I'm usually tinkering in the garden (weather permitting) or drooling over those smokin' hot Winchester Brothers from Supernatural. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

Started strong -- kinda petered out at the end -- but I'll still read more set in this world. Good popcorn book.

Jodi Redford has a way with hot and sexy shifter stories, and this one is no exception.

Willa Jameson realizes her life has gone totally out of control when she finds herself being dragged to the depths of the Atlantic in the tentacles of a leviathan. She has been having flashes of memory that she doesn’t recognize, and a voice in her head urges her to do naughty things with the sexy and hot shark shifter who rescued her from the deep.

When Willa and Max track down her Aunt Aurele, Willa learns that her life as she remembers it is all a lie-she isn’t just a powerful witch, she is actually a nymph, and the only living descendent of the royal family of Atlantis. Even her memories of her parents' accident are false; they were actually murdered by an evil woman wanting to seize the throne. But can Willa do what is necessary to break through the memory wipe and regain the truth of who, and what, she really is? Can Max, her sexy shark, and his friend Boone take her to the heights of passion needed to release her inner nymph? Can they defeat the evil Reva once and for all?

I love this world Ms. Redford has crafted, with the unique mix of normal humans, shifters, witches and other strange and interesting beings. This is the third visit to this world by Ms Redford, and I enjoyed catching up with Willa, who was instrumental in the happy ever after in book two.

Willa Jameson is a confused young woman, with voices in her head and memories she doesn’t understand. She is a strong and talented witch, but she soon realizes that there is something more inside, and she becomes more determined than ever to uncover the truth. I enjoyed watching as she came to terms with each new piece of the past that had been taken from her, and loved her determination to regain the memories that had been erased.

Maxwell ‘Max’ Truitt is the Sheriff in his part of the Atlantic. As a shark shifter, he patrols the Atlantic waters, keeping the area safe for humans and shifters alike. He is strong and sexy and loyal to his friends and family. I liked his protective streak where Willa was concerned, and his total inability to resist her inner nymph when she popped in for a quick visit. I loved his noble idea that he wasn’t good enough for Willa, who is a princess, and how that idea clashed with the man who felt that she was his.

There are several intertwining threads to this one. Willa’s emerging nymph, the secrets of the past, and the danger still ready to pounce all come together to provide edge of your seat reading. There are several very hot scenes between Willa and Max, courtesy of the nymph, and the scene where Max and Boone finally break through the mind wipe to bring Willa’s past and present into alignment is one of the hottest I’ve read. The secondary characters are all well crafted, and I hope that Boone will get his own story somewhere down the line as well. Do Max and Willa find her Aunt Aurele, defeat Reva, and find a happy ever after? You will need to read Maximum Witch to find the answer to that one.

Oh, lordy! Do you see that warning up there? The one that says that there's plenty of smoking-hot lovin' with a shark? It's true. All of it. There is no puffer fish sex. There's no sea horse sex. There's just a lot of steamy, sexy, panty melting good times between Willa and her hunky shark shifter. *fans self* Oh, yeah. Jodi Redford knows how to bring the heat.

One thing that I'm really enjoying with this series is that each of the books are very different. Sure, we get those growly Alpha males who like to make sure their ladies are taken care of, if you know what I mean. And I don't see how you couldn't since I'm not very subtle. But just in case you couldn't figure out what I was alluding to: These Alpha bad boys like to make sure their lady friends have plenty of orgasms. And I do mean PLENTY! What's not to like about that?

I'm sorry. I got distracting talking about orgasms and shapeshifters again. I was saying that these books are all wonderfully different. Jodi Redford has given us such a wide variety of bad guys as the series progresses that it makes me grin. Zombies! Voodoo Queens! Soul Stealers! Dude. Variety is all spicy and stuff and this series is liberally seasoned.

Now that I've totally gone off on a tangent I'm going to say this: I like this book. I like shark shifters. I like the way Jodi Redford writes. I like talking to Jodi Redford about the possibilities of puffer fish sex. Bottom line, I like the world that has been created and I'm kinda in love with the idea of a big, predatory hero who looks at their lady like he's going to eat them right up. *sigh*

If there's one thing I think everyone needs to know, it's this: Jodi Redford writes the best non-puffer fish sex I've read all week.

Yep, that sums it up.

While some series start to loose their luster and creativity after awhile, this series just keeps getting better and better! Jodi Redford knows how to deliver uniqueness, humor and delicious hotness in each one of her captivating books!

Witch, Willa Jameson, has just been pulled from the ocean by one fabulously yummy, alpha hero, Maxwell Truitt, who just happened to be on night patrol as sheriff when a sexy girl was in need of a knight in shining armor -- well, maybe I should say in sleek shark skin with wicked teeth? :)

Max has rescued one sexy woman who he knows is different, but despite her admission that she's a witch, her "other" characteristics (for instance breathing underwater while unconscious) just don't seem to add up ... especially when an inner voice starts encouraging her to seduce the sexy shark cop (not that she really wants to fight her desires). It's this buried, mysterious part of her that makes her a target of an ancient plot that puts her in both danger and tethered to the side of Max, who has taken over as her full-time protector -- and provider of hot lovin' distraction! :)

But, when Willa finds out just who and what she really is, her life will change course that tests the love between Max and herself.

The world-building in this series is captivating and continuously evolving which each consecutive book. Each book is unique in it's dynamics, conflicts, characters, and magical elements, while still maintaining a very consistent writing style, humor, great characters, and hot, sexy expectations! In Maximum Witch, the action and setting took place on both land (Georgia) and sea (Atlantic) which made for a refreshing change up in the urban fantasy world. Jodi also introduced a mythological aspect to the plot and setting that upped the fantasy aspect of the storyline.

I have yet to find a book that can pull off making a shark ultra sexy and as highly dimensional as Jodi created Max. In fact, Jodi has yet to demonstrate any poorly written character as far as I'm concerned. The characters are so full of life and depth that you can't help but feel like they live down the street from you. They laugh and cry and come with a fabulous sense of humor that will leave you laughing-out-loud! :)

The protagonists are created to compliment each other very nicely. I enjoyed the fact that it was Max trying to convince Willa that they were made for one another, as well as his fierce protection of her and his unwavering assistance in helping her to find out about herself and her hidden past -- even when it would mean sacrificing himself. *swoon* Yes, I admit, Max is my new book boyfriend. :) Willa was equally enjoyable character with spunk, strength and determination -- even if it did take a little extra persuasion from Max to fight her fears and occasional self doubt.

And speaking of Max taking care of Willa in all sorts of ways ... this story is sexy hot, meaning it's erotic, uses graphic language, and even throws in one hell of a sexy threesome. But is well written and dispersed throughout the story that doesn't seem overdone or over taking of the plot. Enjoy!

The paranormal aspects are absolutely captivating, fun, and make the story come to magical life! Like I previously mentioned, Jodi took the readers from adventure on land to adventure in the ocean off the coast of Georgia. These contrasting settings allowed for different magical and shifter dynamics that were refreshing to watch unfold. Jodi's writing style makes for an easy read that combines moments of lightness and a little edginess.

This is a series that I can't help but highly recommend to anyone who loves erotic paranormal romance with loads of humor, sexiness, adventure, magical fun, and an air of suspense. Jodi never fails at delivering a unique tale with ultra sexy romance and characters you want to call up to hang out -- and even fall in love with *g*. Readers who would like to jump in at any point during the series may do so without feeling as though they are missing something; with only minor story and character arcs that transfer over, but are always explained. It's one of my favorite series and I absolutely can not wait for the next installment of That Old Black Magic!!

Favorite Quote:
“Harrison and Reva decided it would be best to leave the six leviathan henchmen in the minivan while they ransacked the Jameson girl’s apartment. In all honesty, it killed Harrison just a little bit inside to be chauffeuring his hand-picked death squad around in a f**king minivan. The future leader of the world did not cruise in the same vehicle that shuttled soccer kids to and fro, for f**k’s sake. It was an abomination. First chance he got, he was stealing a godd**n tank.”

Review:
Jodi Redford raises the stakes … and succeeds! Can we talk about that wicked hot cover for just a second? I was practically drooling all over myself before I had read the first page. How frickin hot is that gorgeous body with that sexy tattoo? And I love how the hands are wrapped around him, but the rest is unseen. Sensual? Absolutely!

Personally, I have read a lot of books with shifters, but this is the first time I have experienced ocean-dwelling shifters and then some. You name it, seals, nymphs, sharks, seagulls (yeah, I said seagulls), mermaids, walruses, puffer fish, leviathans … makes for a very interesting cast. This story picks up where Book 2, The Seven Year Witch ends with poor Willa being led against her own will toward the ocean; a place she is deathly afraid of. Max is both Sheriff of the area and on rounds that night when he encounters Willa being dragged deep into the ocean by a leviathan. Max rescues her and discovers that she is breathing under water, but an unconscious Willa has no recollection of the feat when she comes to.

Eventually Max pieces together a few cold cases with his vast knowledge of the Atlantean population. Yep – as in Atlantis! I have to admit, I was wondering how a witch story with the heroine in imminent peril was going to work for the third time in a row, but the Atlantis spin took everything to a whole new level. No stale reused story plots here! I also liked how parts of Book 1 tied into Book 3 allowing the components to all three stories click together. That said, with Book 2, you would be better off reading Book 1 first. However, with Maximum Witch, a reader could read it on its own and be able to understand without any gaping holes left wide open.

I do have a few questions though. How did Willa get away from being Domino’s assistant? I mean, impending danger was probably automatic for a leave of absence or something. But one day she is working and the next day she’s not; nor do we hear anything else about working for Domino. Anyone who has read the previous books knows Domino is NOT going to allow that to just happen. And what is with Boone and Justin? Blushes and what not all over the place, but nothing developed or was explained in plain text. Do we have a possible Book 4 in plotting phase? Also, Willa is best friends with Marabella, so where does she go? Wouldn’t she want to spill her guts to her best friend? Just seems like we would have seen more of Marabella during the emotional turmoil of the last few chapters. Now these questions are not paramount to the immediate story of Max and Willa, they are just little nags in the back of my head.

Now, a shifting shark? I too had my brows raised a time or two. By the end of the story – errr – more like by a very creative bathtub scene, the ever talented Max, water manipulating extraordinaire, had me begging for a Tiger shark of my own! Kudos to Redford for keeping my interest with creative spins that broke outside the box, entertaining me from start to finish.

Well, Jodi Redford has done it again. She’s introduced me to a shifter that I never even considered (silly me thought they were all mammals.) She gave me a brand new villain that was super easy to hate. She twisted a familiar character’s reality almost beyond recognition and managed to sneak in some really steamy scenes that made me blush – a lot. Maximum Witch was a very full book indeed.

I really like the spin on shifters that Jodi has given readers in That Old Black Magic series. Mixing the worlds of shifters with witches is a great concept. Although Max isn’t Willa’s familiar the romance still worked just as well for me in Maximum Witch. Jodi’s use of mythology really made the concept real, as strange as that may seem. Maybe it’s because the myths are so familiar? When the extra elements are added it just makes it that much easier to go along with it. Who knows why it works so well, the important part is that it does.

Willa and Max turned out to be a really cute couple. (Yes, the shark was cute… who knew?) Willa is totally unsure of herself because she can’t figure out why someone like Max would be interested in her and Max doesn’t consider himself worthy of her. That would make them the perfect tragic couple, right? You’ll have to pick up the book to find out. I don’t want to give anything away.

There’s also plenty of action in Maximum Witch. That combined with the hot and heavy scenes make it impossible to put down. The supporting characters had depth and the POV changed between characters seamlessly. There were a couple of heart breaking moments thrown in as well so basically there was something for everyone. Well, maybe not for everyone. You’ll have to read the cute little warning above and decide for yourself. ;)

Okay, here's the thing, I read this book for one reason and one reason only. TIGER SHARK SHIFTER HERO. Just wanted to get that clear up front.

Maximum Witch is the third book in the That Old Black Magic series. It doesn't work too well as a stand-alone as it helps if you've read the second book, The Seven Year Witch. I am also fuzzy on if the shifters featured in Maximum are the same as the familiars from the first two books. I mean, the principle seems to be the same, but Redford doesn't really offer a lot of details on the race/species/etc. It appears that the animal side doesn't have any impact on the human side in Redford's creations. The hero, Max (see what she did there?), didn't spend a lot of time in shark form in the book which, frankly, I found a tad disappointing.

However, I did think there was a lot to recommend the book. I loved this exchange in the beginning of the book:

“I’m a shark, Willa.”

Her smile froze in place.

“Shit. This is why I didn’t want to mention it.”

Digesting the information, she stared at Max, trying to correlate the image of Jaws with the hunk standing in front of her.

“You’re picturing Jaws right now, aren’t you?”

I also thought their version of "witness protection" was hysterical and a clever move on Redford's part. The sex was scorching hot and I enjoyed it every time Max blushed. There's one m/m/f scene and it's just a touch gratuitous. There is a reason it happens, but it's flimsy enough that you're like, Really?.

As of 08/30/12, Maximum Witch is currently on sale for $4.59 at Kobo and they just released new coupons. With a coupon, I think it's worth the purchase, just for the novelty of reading about non-land based shifters.

Need to save the world? Have a threesome! What? It’s a solid plan in times of crisis, and Jodi Redford executes it brilliantly. What I love about this series is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously — shark shifters, anyone? — yet provides us with a wonderful (and often necessary) escape. When I have the time, it is easy to sit down and read these books in a single afternoon, and that’s exactly what I did with Maximum Witch.

Despite this being a series, you don’t have to have read That Voodoo You Do or The Seven Year Witch to understand what’s going on in Maximum Witch. And other than Willa showing up as a character in one or both (I forget, honestly) of these books, there is really very little overlap. What I’m saying is that you can pick up this book read on with pleasure without being confused because you’re missing some vital information.

If you’re looking for a fun romp in the water with a HEA, I would thrust a copy of Maximum Witch into your arms, and then skip off happily into the sunset. Max is a shark shifter! Willa is a [name redacted to avoid spoiling anything]! Together the sparks fly! Also, they try to save the world. What more could you want from a lighthearted PNR? I don’t really have more to say than that, other than I know that I am going to continue seeking out other books by Jodi Redford because her books are funny, sexy, and my own little guilty pleasure.

This was a good book. Did not like as much as the 2nd one. I still recommend the book and the series.
This is the story of Willa, a witch. She has been having some strange things happening to her. She keeps hearing weird voices and waking up and not sure how she got there. The latest incindent she finds herself walking into the ocean and then waking up in a strange mans bed. She finds out that she was attacked by a leviathan. She meets Max. Max is a shark shifter; gorgeous, and very sexy. She is instantly attrached to him. When she is near him she is instantly turned on and wants to do naughty things to him.
She finds out that she has a very interesting past and that all humankind are also in trouble. She needs to find out her past and defeat the bad people threatning to take everything that she has left, including Max.
Loved the story, but disappointed that no one from the previous books makes an appearance like Logan or Clarissa, or Jemma & Griffin.

I really enjoyed this story. The sexual scenes were super steamy as were the Hero (shark shifter!! hello!) and best friend. It was easy to get pulled into the story. I really dislike romance stories that don't ever leave the bedroom (or kitchen counter, living room, dining room table, etc.) A couple of cons though, and it seems weird to complain about it but the title of the book is awful. It has almost nothing to do with being a witch and doesn't help the potential reader get any clue about what's inside the covers of the book which is too bad since it's definitely worth reading. Two, the ending is weak. It seems like the writer rushed to get it done, but overall still satisfying.

I vote a definite thumbs up.

I liked the premise of this story. I thought it was different (in a good way) that Max was a shark shifter. The story moved quickly and had lots of action. I did not feel as invested in Max and Willa. Most of their relationship seemed to rest on she is the heroine and he is there hero. I liked them individually, but would liked to have seen more of a build in their relationship.

This book has almost nothing to do with the first two in the series, and it's kind of refreshing. New characters It surprised me by taking a turn for the menage. But it was for the good of all mankind, of course!
