Adam, Douglas and Travis Clayborne are each happily married, and their beloved Mama Rose is overjoyed with the wonderful ladies who have joined the family. But all the Claybornes wonder on which side of the law their restless brother Cole will land. Now, Julie Garwood brings her irresistible mix of heartwarming wit and thrilling sensuality to a memorable Clayborne reunion...and at last we meet the elusive stranger who has slipped in and out of their lives, a man who lured Cole Clayborne into a shadowy chase, and who will now bring unexpected turns to Cole's uncertain future.

Daniel Ryan is a hard man set on vengeance, a U.S. marshal driven by tragic, heartbreaking loss from the past. His quest leads him to a beautiful young woman, the sole witness to a terrible crime -- and the only person who can help him. But the lawman finds that love is perhaps the greatest risk of all as he unwittingly draws her into the line of fire. The power and drama of their blossoming passion, entwined with the spirited adventures of the Claybornes and the surprising choices of the wayward Cole, make Come the Spring as poignant as it is unforgettable.

It’s been over a year since I read the last novella installment of Julie Garwood’s The Claybornes of Rose Hill series, so I decided it was time to bite the bullet and get it done!

Come the Spring is Cole Clayborne’s story, who I fell in love with in the earlier books. I’ve been dying to read this, but reviews and comments from friends and other readers had me concerned that it might not measure up, which is why I waited so long. I had hoped that maybe if I put some time between my last reading and this one, Cole might stand a fighting chance, because For the Roses totally swept me off my feet and became an all time favorite feel good read. So yeah, it’s pretty hard to follow in those footsteps. I’d like to say that time away and the old “absence makes the heart grow fonder” adage was true, but that’s not the case. I won’t go into a lot of details about why I feel this way, but I will touch on some of my thoughts about the things I loved and didn’t love about this book.

This was a really sweet story, and incredibly sad, too.

Cole – in the previous books he was larger than life. He had such a strong presence, and this charisma about him that had me nearly drooling every time his name was mentioned. I didn’t see that in this book. To me, he was much more reserved, almost a watered down Cole Clayborne. He was still funny and I enjoyed him, but I have to be honest and say he’s not the Cole I remembered or was looking forward to revisiting.

Daniel Ryan – Finally we get to meet this US Federal Marshall who has been the bane of Cole’s existence ever since he lifted a compass off of Mama Rose that was a gift meant for Cole. What’s that, you say!? A Federal Marshall picking some poor woman’s pocket? Yes, that’s exactly what happened, and the story behind it and his reasons for it were pretty funny.

Now, despite my earlier comments, I do want to make it clear that this was a really sweet story. I enjoyed the romance, the mystery and the characters. It’s definitely worth reading to wrap up the series, it just didn’t have that magic that I’ve come to expect from a Julie Garwood historical, and I'm giving it a 3.5/5 stars.

A disappointing ending to a series that started well, but lost momentum and interest along the way. (To be fair, I’m still on hold for a library loan of the 4th installment, One Red Rose but I expect that to be another novella with scant character development and insta-romance, as were #2 and #3.)

While this was a full length book, it also eschewed character development and relied on insta-romance—in fact, two insta-romances—while providing a fairly engrossing plotline filled with evil perpetrators threatening all the good guys. There’s supposed to be a surprise twist, but it’s foreseeable. Shockingly, the Kindle edition seems to be missing a crucial paragraph (or more) in the climactic courtroom confrontation at the end, resulting in one of the bad guys simply disappearing from the face of the planet. Did the starship Enterprise accidentally beam him up? I refuse to believe Julie Garwood simply forgot about him. This is a pretty bad publishing error, but evidently the publishers dashed this out the same way the author did.

Sigh. Cole deserved better.

3'5 Estrellitas.

2.5 stars. I’m rounding up only because I love Julie Garwood in general... but this book has to be one of the worst she’s ever written! The storyline was just plain lazy in terms of romance. There are two couples that eventually get together: Cole & Jessica and Daniel & Grace. C&J know each other for about 3 minutes before they are both declaring their love. Pfft. Right.

D&G are a little more complicated but it’s also essentially love at first sight with them. Daniel is a widower who loved and lost his wife and daughter and he vows to never love again. Then he turns around and changes his mind about 10 pages later. I’m sorry, but maybe having Daniel find love again shouldn’t have been a part of the story? I felt his love for his wife in the way that he talked about her. It was much stronger than what he felt for Grace. If anything, Grace was a case of lust. Daniel calling his feelings for Grace “love” felt like a bad joke.

I really did like the mystery behind the bank robbers and the witness to the crime. Unfortunately, even that part was a little weak since it made no sense why the two Marshalls didn’t try harder to extract the truth from their witnesses. They never even confronted the women!! I was just SMH so hard, I probably gave myself this headache I now have.

I’m sad this series ended on such a low note. There needed to be more time spent with the other Claybornes in this book! The family was sadly missing from all but the first book in the series.

Safe; both heroines virgins.

Re-read.

Wonderful wrap up and ending to a terrific series. I just loved it.

Years ago, my mom told me to read this series. She loved it. But, I wasn't interested in "western historicals," so I ignored her recommendation. Yes, I loved Julie Garwoods historicals, but it just did not appeal to me. Well, my mom was right (of course). I'm sure she is smiling down on me now. I told you, Carolyn! Yes, mom, you were right and I loved the entire series. It was fabulous. Better late than never. ;)

¡Bien!

¿Romance apresurado? Sí. ¿Flechazo? Sí. ¿A primera vista? Sí. ¿Lujuria inmediata? Sí.

¿Me molesta? No realmente.

I think this might've been my least liked Julie Garwood. Hey, it supposed to happen sooner or later.

So, what you have here is two male leads and three female leads. See what we have going here? So, obviously we gonna have two couples here and one extra lady (let's ignore her). The first couple is Cole and Jessica, which I kinda like and the second couple is Daniel and Grace (which really didn't make any sense at all).

The plot with the Blackwater gang was interesting though (they reminded me of the Van Der Lind gang) and I wish the book would just eliminate the whole Daniel and Grace stuff to make way for this plot, because their story was really nonsense, they brought nothing to the book. Gahhhhh

P.S.

I didn't like how it took her half the book just to fully set the scene, and then she tried to squeeze 2 mediocre, unbelievable romances into about 1/4 of the book.
And her male characters have definitely declined. Julie Garwood, what happened?? When did your big strong, stubborn, rude men turn into frilly little puppies?
In the Highlander books, it took the female protagonist being in some sort of life threatening danger for the guy to finally realize he loves her as he races to save her. And that's after a decently long period of time. The guy is also rude and inconsiderate and unemotional, but the woman sees right past it and loves him anyway.
What does she do in Come the Spring? He decides he loves her after about 3 days and has sex with her, calling her all sorts of things such as "pretty" "sweet heart" "baby" etc. What in the world happened to you??? I want more stories with the Highlanders.
I was tempted numerous times to just put down this disappointing book and move on to my newest Stephanie Plum novel

Clayborne Brothers

A truly wonderful brilliantly told story I was engrossed from beginning to end. The author pulled out all the stops on this one and I so enjoyed Cole Clayborne's story and Daniels Ryan's which was an added bonus 2 love stories in one it was very emotional I laughed cried cheered and booed as I read the plot. And the twist I did not see that coming. The characters were excellent and Cole and Daniels banter even with the ladies was great to read I love this series maybe Cooper with get his story

Read this again and it is really a great story. The whole series is. Especially Mama Rose. Cole is a clayborne but he shares the book with Daniel a Marshall. He gets Cole appointed as a Marshall so he can help him catch the murdering gang that is robbing banks and killing people. There is a witness but who. Lots of twists and turns and I enjoyed every minute.

I am definitely a Garwood fan, but this one didn't work for me. There's too much plot for a book of this length and everything ends up being underdeveloped. There's a pretty meaty suspense plot and TWO romance plots all smushed into one book. (It's possible that, had I read the earlier books in the series, I would have known enough about Cole that my emotional response to this book would have been different, but as a standalone, for me it didn't work.)

The last book is Cole's story. He was the restless, "I'll never get married." brother. This series was mildly entertaining but very predictable. I never had a doubt that a love match wouldn't work out or that the bad guy would get away and a happy ending was a sure bet. I need a little more realism than that I guess as my next pick is a WWII novel.

It was okay … there was a lot more about the robberies than Grace and Daniel and Jessica and Cole. I would have enjoyed more of a story about them.

Solid 4.25.

Enjoyed this very much, fortunately this entire series had the same narrator so if your listening right through as I have there are no jarring changes.

A great conclusion to a wonderful series, For the Roses being the best... but this is a great conclusion. All the Claiborne's are great but Mary Rose and Cole have always been my personal favorites.

Need something similar try JG's Prince Charming, this is I think my favorite of all her mixed environment books (Old West with a touch of Historical Britain). The bulk of this series and Prince Charming take place in the 1800's America...

For the Roses has a memorable opening.

Ah such a beautiful story!!
So basically, there is a robbery and someone witnesses it.
Sheriff Cole and Daniel are in-charge of the investigation.
Jessica and Grace, along with their friend Rebecca are potential witnesses.
Thugs are out to kill the eyewitness.
Who saw it? Who did it?
Intriguing tale of mystery. Jessica, single mother of Caleb, falls for Cole, the only single remaining Claybourne, while Grace falls for widower Daniel. I liked their small interactions and sweet chemistry.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Safe read.

Oh my fucking God what was this book holy fucking shit couldn't ever guess all the plot twist. And Ryan is amazing! I laughed a lot and loves Cole and Ryan interacting! Only thing I kind of complain is that for some reason I thought Ryan and Cole were brothers so pretty disappointed they weren't but honestly it didn't spoil this book even an inch

This is one of the best series I have ever read, and I have pretty high standards to family series. I'm actually extremely sad it's over

I read all the previous books, patiently waited for Cole's story. I feel that Cole got cheated, he had to share his book with Daniel Ryan. Don't get me wrong Daniel is a good character that he could have his own spin off book.
A few things that annoyed me:
-after all the mentions of how Daniel and Cole looked alike from the previous books, i thought maybe they were related somehow. Why else mention him in the other books.
-the book felt rushed, lots of stories and little time.
-not enough of the Clayborne Brothers, just a final bit in the epilogue.

I gave up less than half way through. It starts out like it is going to be really good….but then it just dragged on…not really anything happening.
Ok…Coles reluctant….check…..the girls are pretty…check……can we move on now?
It’s like the story can’t make up its mind what genre it is?.is it a romance novel….maybe….but not quite. Is it mystery…maybe…..drama?…maybe…..a western? I suppose.?……Yawn.

A continuation of Rose's story. I liked this series best of Garwood's work. Although her tendency to refer to sex as "mating" can wear on a reader after five novels, these characters are likeable and always leave you interested in their fate.

Cole finally gets his own book. Well, sorta. He has to share his story with Daniel Ryan, who I thought would end up being his long lost brother or something, because people kept mentioning how they looked similar.
