In the hustle and bustle of today's busy world, sometimes it's hard enough to hear yourself think, much less take a minute to stop and listen for the voice of God. But learning to recognize God's voice and the many ways in which He speaks is vital for following His plan. In How to Hear from God , Joyce Meyer shows readers that God reaches out to people every day, seeking a partnership with them to offer guidance and love. She reveals the ways in which God delivers His word and the benefits of asking God for the sensitivity to hear His voice. Joyce asks the question, "Are you listening?" and shares how to do just that.

I started this one a few days ago because I want to hear God clearly again. I'm actually amused by the title. I know God's voice intimately and have for years and I also know how to make decisions that honor God. I'm sure it would surprise many people how often I consult God in my decision making and how often I filter my thoughts through Him. As I keep reading this I'm just reminded of things that I already know and practice. They are all good reminders and in many instances I'm already doing what the author recommends. That bolsters my confidence.
If I had to pick one thing I like about this book it would have to be one of the many examples of how God is using it in my life. God amuses and delights me because He's very aware of how dense I can be. I just cannot hide from Him and when He wants me to listen He finds ways to get my attention. I was reading it nonchalantly over the weekend and then spontaneously the word patience came to me. I pushed it out of my head and kept reading. As I turned the page the next chapter was entirely on patience. I put the book down and went to church. The entire message at church was on patience. Then I went home and Grant asked me to watch a movie with him. I asked him a question about the movie and he turned to me and said "Lauren, you have to wait" in a voice that meant business. Even though he meant it in reference to the movie it wasn't just of him. I could feel it in the atmosphere that Grant had nothing to do with the words that came out of his mouth. It felt like God had used him to remind me a fourth time in the day to be patient. After the movie I stopped and took the time to read that chapter. Again, it was nothing new to me but I knew what God was getting at. Patience. The book was worth it just for that lesson. I suppose reading that book is helping me to hear from God. I just didn't expect it in that blatant way.
So many people want to be able to hear from God, but are not sure how to hear His voice. Joyce Meyer is a fabulous teacher! She breaks it down simply and backs it all up with scripture throughout -- nearly on every page. I have underlined so many things in this book that I think there is writing on nearly every page too. God is speaking to us all the time, but too often we are too busy to be able to hear. By understanding all the different ways that God speaks, it becomes easier to hear Him (through scripture, concious thoughts, prayer, words from others, etc.). Joyce also shares some of the hindrances in our lives to hearing from God. With her wonderful wit and bold examples of her own life of how she's messed up, she helps the reader see that hearing from God is attainable for anyone. I would highly recommend reading this book as a Women's Bible Study. It is so much richer to share experiences with each other about how God speaks to each of us differently and it was so encouraging to hear all the stories about how He works in each person's life around us.
I read this book with a group of about 30 women. We found that it worked well in a 6 week session (Kick off session to pass out books -- then 5 weeks of study and discussion: Chapters 1 - 3, 4 - 6, 7 - 9, 10-12 and 13-14 with a final party.) We found that it was helpful to summarize the learning each week in a big group and then break into three separate small groups to discuss the individual questions at the end of the chapter. It was truly a special study. We learned so much, grew into a deeper relationship with God and formed such special friendships along the way. During the course of the study, it was truly amazing to see all the different ways that God spoke to each of us! I would highly recommend it for either reading by yourself to strengthen your personal walk with God or for really rich content for a Bible Study. I don't think you will be disappointed!
It took me a while to get through this book. This was only my 2nd Joyce Meyer book and I absolutely loved the first one so I figured I'd either hate or love this book. I didn't read it to critique it. I read it to learn how to hear from God. What I learned was "listen to God and obey." I just did not like the execution. Some of it was obvious and some of it was contradictory and confusing. Like she will say God speaks through other people but you can't believe everything people say is from God. Or we hear God's voice when we spend time with God but we can't make decisions based on our gut yet the Holy Spirit speaks to us through our "inner voice" (aka gut) sometimes. I know hearing from God is a complex subject matter. I just thought since it was a "Joyce Meyer" book, I would get more understanding from it. In her last book I read, I felt like anyone could learn from that book but this book just seemed too complex for a baby christian or someone who does not know God yet too elementary for someone who is growing spiritually
I wasn't exactly sure why I bought this book the other day but I'm glad I did. I wasn't sure what to expect from Mrs. Meyers and had never given her much thought as I was always under the impression that she ministers primarily to women about 'woman stuff.' I found this book quite interesting, useful, and very practical. She has a gift to simplify things that many people try to complicate. The title of the book pretty much explains everything...How to hear God's Voice. The big thing I learned here is that God speaks to us in many different ways and that we must obey Him. It's really as simple as that. Somehow, Joyce makes this interesting. Never did I feel the book lagging or droning on in meaningless abstractions, rather, I discovered I can use everything she says. I heartily recommend this book to one's own library and do what it says.
This book took me months to read. I read it very slowly, took notes, & used it like I would a textbook. Although, I'm not a big Joyce Meyer fan, I enjoyed her writing style. She was very controlled & the chapters, directions, were easy to follow. The only thing I didn't enjoy was her explaination of the scriptures throughout the novel, I wish she would've broken them down more & explained them more than what she did. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to expand spiritually.
I thoroughly enjoy learning from Joyce Meyer; she has related so many things in easy to understand ways that have impacted my life. I certainly don't think that her words are only for women; as a man I have empathized with so many things she has shared over the years.
This book is definitely a classic; an excellent resource for anyone who wants to hear what God is saying to them. As with most of her teaching this is straight up Biblical truth being shared. There are many things you will be reminded of as you read or listen to this book, and definitely some new insights that you can apply to your life as well. I did wish that she would have shared more in-depth practical experience and ways to practice hearing from God. The middle of the book kind of went into some tangental (but still good) material.
This is a good resource for new Christians or those who haven't felt like they have or can hear from God. If you're looking for more in-depth practical application I would encourage you to go deeper with some of the other resources out there.
This is a good read. I learned quite a bunch of different items in this book. I am trying to grow as a Christian and this helped me gather more thoughts and goals to try to get closer to God. Recommend all who are like me and want to grow from a baby Christian.
Have you ever wondered if it was God talking to you or the devil trying to tempt you? Have you ever wondered how people always seem to know how God is speaking to them? This book will show you the basic of how to know if it is God and what he is saying. There are other books that go into more detain, but this book is good for getting the basics down. I think this is important because I feel too many people try and take shortcuts with God and there are no shortcuts. If you do that chances are that the devil will tell you something you want to hear and because you are in a hurry you will think it is the Lord speaking to you.
How to Hear From God discusses several different ways that you know a message is from God. My favorite one is that when you make a decision when you pray about it you will have peace. Have you ever decided something then have that niggling feeling that something just isn’t right? That is your sign to wait. If you have peace about something you know to go ahead.
I liked this book, and it made me want to delve deeper into the topic. Like I stated above this is only a basic introductory book on the subject. It does not go into detail the steps you have to take to really have an intimate relationship with God, which is necessary if you want to have more then a fleeting convo with him. Steps like obedience, doing what God tells you before he will tell you more etc.
I would read this book as a stepping stone to other books that delve more deeply into the topic.
My husband read this book before I did. It was recommended by him and I am so amazed by this book. Our God is awesome. I would strongly recommend this book to all.
Joyce Meyer is one of the best Biblical teachers whose books I've read. She has such a great knowledge of, not only Gods word, but God himself. She opens the readers eyes to so many uncharted and unspoken territories in all her books, and this one followed suit. I spent a lot of time with this book. I also prayed and cried a lot because of this book and I'm thankful for that. It shows that it made an impact on my life and spirit. At the end of the book Joyce writes, " I think one of the reasons so many people listen to me is because I admit all the wrong things I do, and people can relate to making mistakes." This rang so true to me. It shows that God really does change the heart and love everyone. It makes Joyce seem like any ordinary person, and if she can be close to God- than so can I. Thank you Joyce for a great book with a great lesson and tons of scripture and wisdom. God bless!
Awesome, awesome book! Lots of helpful advice, lots of truth, lots of humbling....I found myself relating to the authors experiences many times! I have been blessed by God because He has communicated with me in so many ways already, even before I read this book. And God has taught me many things that were talked about in this book already, but it was still nice to read and get some new information and I love how she tied in the bible verses to show that what she was writng about, is really what God wants for us. I also love how she used her own personal and other people's experiences to help illustrate her teachings! I want to read this again and go and highlight everything that spoke to me.
Joyce Meyer is a smart lady & I identify with her no nonsense approach to teaching. This book is great for new Christians or those who are wanting to take their prayer life to a new level & for me it taught things I already knew, but needed confirmation & reaffirmation on how I hear from God in my prayer time. I will admit the last quarter of the book is a little wordy & I found myself looking at the progress on my e-reader frequently to see if I was almost finished. But there were a lot of helpful tips at the end so don't skip it!
That book taught me a lot of things about God's plan to me with making me hear his voice in a particular way which is different than other people's. Really that book has changed my thoughts and lead them to a very different way and I found the truly God's healing words in it. Read in 2008 What I love most in Joyce Meyer is her ability in renewing your thoughts and dealing with your everyday life's issues by the power of God's word.
This is the first Joyce Meyer book that I have read but have had many friends recommend her, so this book came with very high expectations and she did not disappoint! This book was well written, talked about her experiences and also hhad bible verses to support what she was talking about, which I love! I really took on board what she wrote about in this book about seeking God's voice and listening to Him in everything we do. I would recommend this book to everyone!
All my life I thought that my Grandma has got to be the most spiritual woman that I know. I was amazed by her ability to hear God and I envied her that I could not. After reading this book, I realize that God has been talking to me all my life, I just didn't realize that it was God talking to me. It has changed my relationship with God and how I listen for Him.
When I first started reading this, I thought all the advice seemed pretty obvious and I was about to put it down. However, starting with chapter 2, I was mesmerized by the words and scripture passages that made me think and get excited about hearing from G-d. This is now one of the best spiritual books, I have read. Highly recommended.
Great book! While some of it is common knowledge to an elder, many parts of the book are great for new believers or those looking to increase their faith or simply learn "How to Hear From God". I enjoyed the book and how thoroughly everything was explained using examples from Joyce's on life so that we could better understand what she was meaning. GREAT BOOK! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I have recently made my way back to God and since then I have tried so hard to hear what He is saying to me about the path He wants me to travel but I couldn't hear Him. After reading this book I have found how to hear God and I am starting to put them in practice.
Although it was from earlier times, the message was pretty much still relevant. I think however, that Joyce has grown more spiritually and if she were to write another book like this, she would give us a little bit more insight on how to create that relationship with God and eventually hear from Him.
Joyce gives full explaination to all the ways God speaks to us in her down to earth way. She explains using examples from scripture and her own life and takes away the uncertainty and mystery surrounding "is God telling me ___". Excellent teaching.
Wow, this book is awesome. The author is really anointed in teaching you how to hear from God. She explains the strongholds in our lives that you would not think anyone knows but when she is talking it is like she is reading my mind so I know that God had His hands on her while she was writing.
I loved this book. Once again another appropraitely time read for my journey. I help me slow down and listen to what God is saying and not be in such a hurry all the time. A book I pull out from time to time to refresh my behaviors to slow down.
This book is a wonderful teaching for those who truly want to hear from God about His will for every aspect of life. Joyce gives practical advice for every day life so we can all learn how to hear from God and make right decisions.
This is my first and probably the best book written by Joyce Meyer. It is so simple and plain to anyone reading it, I have fallen in love to her writings all because of this book. To me, this book tell's me much, every Christian can hear God speaking to him in different and interesting ways.
I really enjoyed reading this book. This is one of those books that you can go back to and refer to when you are going through different situations in your life where hearing from God is crucial! The author reminds us that everyone can hear from God when they open up their heart to do so.
