Devastated by a terrible loss, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else—a monster threatening to tear her apart.
As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.
M.R. Merrick is a Canadian writer and author of The Protector Series, and The Rise of Genesis. Having never traveled, he adventures to far off lands through his imagination and in between cups of coffee. As a music lover and proud breakfast enthusiast, he's usually found at the computer between a pair of headphones and a large bowl of cereal.
Wow! There are no words right now that could possibly explain how amazing this book is. It deserves way more than 5 stars.
Chase is caught in the midst of a supernatural war. Trying to come to terms with his magic he must find a way to stop his father from bringing back the evil God, Ithereal. But will he be able to stop such powerful magic when he can barely control his own?
When I received the first book from Matthew for review I instantly fell in love with his writing and his characters. It was without a doubt the best indie book I had ever read. I thought in no way could anything beat it. Well I was wrong. He definitely surpassed himself with Shift. It was absolutely incredible and I could not put it down. I finished Shift within a few days and it had me sat with bated breath wondering what was going to happen next. I did not see all the twists and turns coming and most of the time I was shocked at what was happening and I just could not stop reading.
Matthew's writing technique is absolutely supurb and his writing completely drew me in from the first page. It has been quite a while since I read Exiled and I couldn't remember everything that happened in it. What Matthew is great at is reminding the reader what happened in the previous book without it feeling repetitive and I find that a lot of authors in YA literature cannot do this very well. Matthew can, he is superb at it and within a couple of pages I remembered pretty much everything that had happened in the previous book and was completely gripped to the storyline and the events of what was happening in this book.
I absolutely love the characters in this book. Chase, our main character is just amazing. I love him. I love that this series is told from he point of view of a male character as a lot of YA literature is usually told from a female point of view so I find this very refreshing to read. I love Chase, I had completely forgotten how much I genuinely love this character and within one chapter I completely loved him again. I love that he's not perfect, he does make mistakes and learn from them. He just wants to do what is best for everyone around him and protect them and I love that about him. I felt that he had really grown as a character from where he was in book 1 to where he is at the end of book 2 and I loved seeing him progress and grow based on the things that happened to him. I really loved seeing Chase's relationships with the other characters growing throughout this book. After his loss at the end of book 1 I couldn't wait to see how he would deal with it and I loved seeing his relationship with Rayna growing. He and Rayna have gone through very similar things and I loved that they came together and trusted each other with everything. Rayna is brilliant. I love her. She's the perfect strong kick-ass heroine and I loved seeing her more vulnerable side in this book. The thing I loved most about Chase's and Rayna's relationship in this book is that finally we got some romance. Hurray! I am definitely a romance girl and love romance in books and I loved that it came into the later parts of this book. A lot of the time with books I feel like the romance starts too soon before the chatracters know each other. In this book it was perfect, how they went from strangers to friends to their feelings growing towards each other.
All in all this was the perfect book for me. I enjoyed it even more than the first one and I cannot wait for the next book in this series to see where the storyline goes. This is one of the series that I could just read again and again and never get bored of it. If you haven't read this series I would highly recommend it. This is not a series to be missed.
In case you missed my glowing review of Exiled (the first book in The Protector Series), let me quickly fill you in: it blew me away. There is no other self published YA series out there that would be better. Most of them don't even come close to being so insanely F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. If you haven't read it yet, GET ON IT. Seriously, don't make me tell you again!
Now, onto my review of Shift.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Matt Merrick and his books. After reading Exiled I was dying to get my hands on an early review copy of Shift. I knew it was going to be EPIC, I knew I would love it just as much as I loved the first book. I was prepared to be blown away. Again. What I didn't anticipate, though, was Shift being even better than Exiled - and it was! I didn't think it was possible, and yet Merrick somehow pulled it off. It's insane! I don't even want to think about all the poor virgins that had to be sacrificed at the altar of inspiration or some other voo-doo kind of thing that went down in Red Deer, because it's just not possible to be THAT good. Na-ah.
Shift picks up where Exiled left off. After the murder of his mother and the crushing fall out with his father, Chase is devastated. He's struggling to find his place in life. Rejected by the Circle, angry, confused and in desperate need of a purpose, he has sworn to avenge his mother's death. The Goddess has named him the Protector and it's now up to him to stop his father from bringing back the evil God, Ithrael ,and preventing him from destroying the world. His newly acquired magical powers are still out of control. The ring he received from the Goddess proves to be a hot item - everyone wants it and they will stop at nothing to get it. Destroying it might be the only way, but in order to do that he must first retrieve a god's weapon. To find it, he is going to have to travel all the way to a dimension called Theral, a dark, dangerous place full of the purest, most evil Underworlders. Thankfully he won't be alone on this mission. There are people who share the same goals with him, and they will support Chase every single step of the way. They will fight arm in arm, together as a team, motivating and protecting each other. Will that be enough to save the world?
I loved every single page of this book. For a self published novel, for any novel, Shift is truly extraordinary and unforgettable. All the characters are wonderful: They make me want to cheer for them, they make me laugh and bring tears to my eyes. I genuinely care about them! In terms of character development, Shift is a real treat. We get to learn so much about all the characters - starting with Chase and Rayna, and ending with Willy, Tiki, Marcus and Vincent (although, I won't lie, Vincent is my favorite - I would so love a book that would tell his story! He is BRILLIANT!).
I especially enjoyed Rayna's story - seeing her turn into a full-blown, kick-ass kitteh was so cool! And then there was Willy and everything that happened to him.. And it all ties down so nicely in the end. I was seriously impressed with Merrick's ability to weave so many different plot lines and then make them come together in the utmost phenomenal way - no loose ends, no where-did-that-come-from moments! Satisfaction guaranteed.
I could say that this is an action-packed book, but that would be a lie. It's a book made of action. There isn't a single chapter, or a passage, or even a page that wouldn't contain something totally bad-ass, something mind-blowing, something to make your heart pound and keep you at the edge of your seat. This book is loaded with electrifying energy, eye-popping developments, gut-wrenching tension and entertainment. And it's also smart - not just any silly action/adventure quest, but a truly masterful, well-thought out creation.
The romance part of this book is perfectly balanced. I do not care much for instant kind of love and romantic feelings developing in a fruit-fly time. That being said, I really appreciated what Merrick did here, by which I mean not rushing the Chase-Rayna love story, not jumping into oohs and aahs and sparkles at the very first chance. He kept it believable and natural, and I loved it that way. At the risk of sounding cheesy. It might have taken a long time for these two to realize their feelings towards each other, but once they did it was more like a collision of galaxies than one of those silly little romances we're so used to reading about. Thank you for that, Merrick. I wouldn't have it any other way.
All in all, Shift is a fantastic book. It's a wicked awesome story, full of gorgeous characters, heart-stopping action scenes and unexpected plot twists. The writing is excellent and addictive, the plot line - out-of-this-world amazing. Atmospheric, taut, entertaining, funny, smart, breathtaking - Shift is one of those books that you'd buy a copy for yourself and then one for each of your friends.
This novel hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until the very end. Packed with lots of action and another amazing storyline, Merrick’s sequel to Exiled is a thrill ride for readers of all ages. I was sucked into the pages as Merrick continues the story of Chase, Rayna, and Willy as they attempt to adjust to the many changes around them. Picking up a few weeks after the conclusion of the first novel, Merrick drops the reader right into the middle of the action as Rayna fights for her life against a demon inside her. I was highly intrigued by this development, and as I absolutely love her character, couldn’t help but sit on pins and needles as the scene panned out.
And, on pins and needles is where I sat for the entirety of the novel. Merrick is a fabulous writer, able to grip the reader in such a way that it’s impossible to set his books down. His characterization, storyline, and fantastical situations really made me feel like I was there with the characters, fighting alongside them; it’s rare that characters can touch me in such a way, but I really feel a close bond to them. Their struggles and triumphs are extremely real, and I loved watching them all grow, especially Chase as he struggles with his intense anger over the death of his mother, his father’s betrayal, and anyone else who gets in his way. Rayna and Willy also have their own struggles to contend with as the story progresses, and watching all the characters grow, unite, and intensify was a real treat. I also thoroughly enjoyed introduction of the new magical elements, the cat and wolf packs, and the all around intensity of the novel itself; Merrick’s creativity and imagination makes for an amazing read, and I highly suggest picking up this series!
Oh my god! I love this series so damn much! i have read these books over and over again. They are just so good! The story starts from the last one which is good! I love all the magic and how chase gets all 4! Rai is awesome! And Marcus is so sweet! I love how Rayna and Chase's relationship isn't taken to the next level until the end! I feel the book developed and just got better as it continued. Rayna's Werecat is awesome! She's always been kinda feisty! Although Vincent is cocky his sarcasm and humour makes me laugh! And I love that about him, there has to be a guy like him in every book to lighten it up:)! 5 stars isn't enough! This book deserves 10! Thanks Merick for writing this awesome book! It is definitely in my top 5 favourite series without a doubt!
CATCHALL I actually ended up loving Shift even more than I loved Exiled, which is saying something. It also got five stars, which is also saying something. I really, really loved this one, you guys. It was awesome. There was excellent character growth and the plot actually moved forward, which is more than I can say for some books. Basically it was an excellent second book. I also really like the title because it can be taken literally or…not. And depending on which way you choose to take it there are vastly different meanings.
THE HERO CHASE Chase continues to grow as a character much as he did in the last one. He's still prideful and arrogant, and more than a little impulsive. He doesn't always think before he does things and he clearly has a temper. Even so, while I don't condone what he does I can see that he doesn't do things simply to be cruel. Though I don't always like his arrogance, which he still has an abundance, we all have our faults. Plus, he is definitely getting better at learning to control it.
THE LOVE INTEREST RAYNA Rayna still has the same awesome attitude that made me adore her in the first one. I love that she isn't afraid to stand up to Chase and call him out when he's being a jerk. At the same time, she can be sweet. Rayna is incredibly stubborn, and sometimes she needs a little pushing to do the right thing, but she isn't difficult only for the sake of being difficult. She's unconditionally loyal to Chase, which I also like, but she still gets upset with him.
THE SECONDARIES I was feeling too lazy to make individual headers today… MARCUS There's a revelation about Marcus in this book that I had actually suspected but that Chase didn't, and it was really interesting to see that. Marcus don't show much emotion, but I think that he's actually incredibly passionate and just has learned to hide it. I still want to know more about him for sure. RILEY Riley is kind of a jerk, but I think that's the point. He doesn't seem like a good man, let alone a good father. But even Chase notes that he wasn't perfect, but that he wasn't always like this, that he's changed. And when you hear something like that, you can't help but want to hear more about the why. Although he's not a likable character, he's a very interesting one. WILLY Willy learns to stand up for himself and others in this book, which I love. He's not just the underdog anymore! He's willing to face down dangers for Chase and he really starts to find his own place in the world as well. I didn't care for him too much before, but I really like the direction his character was taken in, and as far as I am concerned character arcs are always a win. TIKI Tiki is still completely loyal to Chase, and will do anything for him even when he doesn't want to. He'll put himself in incredible danger. I don't know. He's not from this world, so he often acts odd and is very unusual. Still, I feel like we didn't get to know him as much as I would have liked to, so hopefully that gets rectified. CHIEF Chief has an actual name that also starts with a C, but for some reason I can't actually remember what it is, so whatever. Anyway, I think that Chief is a spectacular character. At first, I wasn't sure what to make of him. How true were his intentions? Does he really want to help? I couldn't be sure, and needless to say I was definitely suspicious. JAX I have something a secondary character fetish, so it happens a lot that I'll randomly latch onto some character who appears maybe three times and decide that they are the awesomest person in the book. Not even making that up. But anyway, the point here is that I really, really like Jax. He's not an important character for most of the book, but by the end he is and I'm sure we'll see more of him, which naturally I am happy about.
THE PLOT One of my favorite words these days is spectacular, and it happens to apply here. This book is, in every sense of the word, spectacular.
Chase is the Protector, but it's not entirely clear what that means yet. Even so, we can see that he's changing, and I mean in things regarding magic mostly, without getting too spoiler. Unusual circumstances surround him, and highly irregular occurrences also. I actually really want to say more on this, but I hate making spoiler tabs because they screw me up on my blog. And it would get way to spoilery to not use one.
This is just wonderful. I enjoy the way everything works out. It's very complicated, but it's also not so complicated that I can't understand. It isn't oversimplified, and there are complicated lines of loyalty and hatred that make up ties and breakages. I like the interconnections and seeing how everyone interacted with each other. It added a certain depth to the story.
What else I liked is the background. There's always something we don't know. Usually more than one something. There's definitely history in most of this, and hidden motives that we can't begin to guess at.
We get some awesome new characters in this book, with their own complicated background, both villains and heroes. And each has their own piece to contribute. It's a very tangled web of intrigue and also of sacrifice, as many of them have to decide just how much they're willing to give up.
There's a ton of action, so that meant that I was never bored. I turned the pages of the book at an insane rate. I didn't want to stop reading it. It enthralled me. Thrilled me. It kept me interested and throughly entertained.
What I'm trying to say here is that this thing was conceived from awesomeness.
THE ROMANCE There is more romance in this book than there was in the last one, so that just kind of makes my heart happy. I love the chemistry between Chase and Rayna, and moreover, I love that it isn't instalovey at all! There is way too much of that everywhere these days and so it was refreshing not to see it here. I love that it was given time to develop. I expect there will be troubles ahead, since, you know, there always are, but, well, you know. They'll work through them, eventually. But what's a little love without a little war? NOTHING. (Okay, so I've clearly been reading too much Shakespeare lately.)
THE WRITING Like Exiled, shift is told in first person from Chase's perspective. His outlook on the world is an interesting one, and I love being inside his head. His actions are often brash, and he doesn't think them out fully. But being able to see his thoughts as he does questionable things certainly makes him more likable than he would be otherwise. Also, I really like the way everything is described. Whenever a new place is visited, it is described so vividly that I can practically see it, and I love when I can picture myself in the same place as in my books.
THE ENDING The ending was perfect. I really, really loved the way it ended. There was definitely a certain level of happiness and security, and I was glad to see that a large piece of conflict has been resolved, yet of course the main conflict got only more complicated. But we're left knowing more than we did before, and it definitely spiked my desire for the next book. I enjoyed this ending also because it was fairly upbeat. That's not always something you see, and so it wasn't just fun to see it here, it was different.
WRAPUP So, I recommended this series after the first book and now I can recommend it even more confidently. I loved this one even more than the first one, and everything basically only got even more fantastic. So, I think you should go pick this up, like, ASAP. Pretend for life depends on it or something if that helps. I am, of course, totally in love with the series, so I would read the next book no matter what.
Devastated by the loss of his mother, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. It’s something else–a monster threatening to tear her apart.
Why did I pick this?
First off, I read the first book in the series Exiled. You can read my review of that HERE. Second, I love me some Merrick :-) I met him on Twitter and became friends. He's a great guy and an awesome writer! Third, after reading the first one, I could NOT wait to read the second. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of the book and I completely devoured it.
What did I think?
Ummm....firstly:
***COVER LOVE***COVER LOVE***COVER LOVE***
I absolutely freaking love this cover. I mean look at it. Wowza to the extreme. I loved the cover when I first saw it on his blog and now that I've read the book, I love it even more. I can appreciate how the entire book ties in with the cover. The panther, the fire, the hurricane in the back....it just takes my breath away. I am such a sucker for covers. Can you blame me? It's what draws the eye in the first place. If I saw this in the store on a shelf, my eyes would be drawn and they'd linger. It's just....awesome.
Now that I've got that out of my system...On with the review....
This picks up right after Exiled and takes off running. The whole book starts off fast-paced and does not let up the entire time. I've tweeted a couple time how absolutely visual this book is. It's like I can feel everything. It's like the heat from Chase's fire was literally emanating off the pages. I loved it. When there's a battle going on, I totally picture myself IN the battle.
The characters that you only got a peek of in the first book, get reintroduced in more depth in this one. I felt more of a connection to each one which made it so great. I love it when characters grow and you get to see more sides of them. Each character grows and you seem to grow right along with them.
Chase is absolutely swoon worthy to be sure. He deals with so much stuff in this book and he handles it all so fantastically. He's a very strong character and I admire him in so many ways. He takes things in stride and is a natural leader. I love that he fights for what he believes and takes care of the people he cares about.
Rayna is adorable. I can't get over what a kick in the pants she is. She's such as awesome part of this entire series. She's strong and handles her own. My kind of chick. She's also pretty badass with a whip. She also goes through so much and it's great that she can lean on Chase and he helps her through all of it.
Marcus is a good man. He is hell bent on protecting the people he loves. I liked that I got to see a little bit more of the man behind the Hunter in this book. My heart broke for him a couple times but overall I admire him. He does what he thinks is right and stands by his word. He's a very wise man as well. He's someone to be reckoned with too.
Tiki....Oh Tiki how I love him. He is just so hilarious. He is a wonderful addition to this book. I couldn't see this series without him. Whenever he went all demon, I totally did a happy dance. He is some serious badassness. He is a serious force. I mean serious. I loved him more and more in this book.
Willy. Ok, so I fell in love with Willy in the first book. Absolute love. He is just so dang adorable I couldn't help myself. I think one of the nest parts in this book is when he stands up for himself and for Chase. It warmed my heart all the way to my toes and made me have a goofy grin on my face. I swelled with pride and did a fist pump in the air for him. It was a great moment. He's still so adorable. *cheesy grins*
Vincent. Oh sweet baby Jesus. LOL He is one conniving vampire. Serious shyte. But I love him nonetheless. He is a fantastic necessity to this book and adds that certain comic relief. His banter with Chase sets off some of the best scenes in the book. I can't WAIT to see him go toe to toe with Chase. Man to vamp. It will be so EPIC.
Riley: One. Bad. Ass. Mo-Fo. Not to be taken lightly. I wanted to smack him myself so many damn times. He'll get whats coming to him I'm sure.
Like I mentioned above, this entire book was a non-stop rollercoaster of action and intrigue. When I thought there was a second of breathing room, something would explode or someone would jump out. It was madness. But I loved every second.
The chemistry between Rayna and Chase is so magical. They are the perfect team. The unconditional trust is there with both of them. It's a wonderful thing to read and a great feeling to get.
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time reading this book. Merrick has this a way to capture your attention and keep it the entire time. He did a fantastical job of creating this demon/hunter world that takes my breath away. His attention to detail in even the minute things is so addicting. The battle, the blood, the shifting, the different dimensions...everything was almost poetic (I know that sounds kind of cheesy but there are only so many times I can say awesome).
Merrick gave this book before it hits the shelved on February 1st. I felt so privileged to have received it.
It really is a great feeling when an amazing writer chooses you to read and review a book of this stature. So a special thank you goes to Merrick for bestowing that honor to me. I knew this book was going to be a smash hit because the first one was amazing.
Some of my favorite quotes:
I realized then, that besides my mother, I'd never completely trusted anyone. Not like I did Rayna. It should' ve worried me that I had such faith in her. Worried that one day she might leave, too. I should've been scared, but I wasn't
Willy looked up at her with fear in his eyes, and Grams reached down and ruffled his hair. "Ah, don't worry Williams, we'll get you some help. Besides, I always wanted a puppy."
"For someone who's five hundred years old, you're an immature dick," Rayna said. <---This is a personal favorite hehe
Chase Williams knew the battle was only just beginning. His enemies were waiting in the wings. Developing their strategies. Building their armies. Biding their time.
Enemies who would stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Enemies who needed to be stopped before he was powerless to stop them.
But he wasn’t sure just how ready he was. Or if he’d ever be ready.
He was still reeling from losing the person he cared most for in the world. A loss he thought could have been avoided. And one he blamed solely on himself.
And with a friend whose life was already hanging in the balance, who was literally being torn apart by their inner demon, Chase felt unbelievably helpless.
Even as battle lines were being formed, sides chosen and alliances made and ended, Chase still wasn’t sure. How could he win if he didn’t know how to even find his enemies, let alone defeat them?
And he still didn’t know just what it meant to be the Protector or how to harness the powers he was given.
But when he saw one chance to gain control, he took it. A decision he made without the first thought about consequences. One that set him and his friends on a collision course with an enemy ready to unleash an onslaught of unimaginable powers against them.
A costly decision that would put the fate of his friends in his hands, forcing him to make the choice about who lives and who dies.

Non-stop action, exhilarating battles and exquisitely detailed transformations are just a fraction of what M.R. Merrick’s Shift has to offer. This second installment in the author’s The Protector series is even darker and more edge-of-your seat intense.
With new and deadlier enemies, a new world to explore, new powers to master and where even dreams aren’t an escape, Shift takes readers on an exciting and heart-pounding adventure that is absolutely riveting.
As his enemies grow even more determined to turn their deadly plans into reality, Chase Williams has little time to try to recover from the shocking blow of losing someone he loves. And with someone else he has grown to care for at risk of suffering a similar fate, Chase must find a way to help before it’s too late.
But when being the Protector is not enough, Chase is forced to put his trust and his friend’s life in the hands of someone who hasn’t yet proven themselves to be trustworthy. It’s a risk, but Chase is without options.
And as Chase tries to learn more about his powers, what it means to be the Protector and just what he’s capable of against an enemy powerful enough to find him in his dreams and an ancient evil looking to break free, the threat to him and his friends continues to grow.
Making everyone anxious. Keeping everyone on edge. And leaving no one safe.
In Shift, author M.R. Merrick continues to build on the characters and the world he created in Exiled. With every battle won and lost, with every step forward and each and every setback, he allows his characters to learn, to adapt and to grow.
Chase Williams is still every bit the hot-tempered, “act now, think later” boy he was, but he isn’t so quick to judge, he is willing to admit to his mistakes, he is always ready to risk his own life to be there for those he cares about and he is incredibly loyal. He is a hero.
And Rayna Lansing is still a mystery. Perhaps it’s the inner demon she struggles with, literally, but she is moody and unpredictable, yet surprisingly lovable. And she is just as stubborn and brave and fearless as Chase, giving their relationship an incredibly exciting dynamic.
With a wonderfully diverse group of characters who are either there to help Chase or to end him, a blazing fast pace that doesn’t let up and an ending that will leave readers desperate for more, Shift is an absolute must read sequel.
On a personal note:
Intense. If I had to sum Shift up in one word it would be that one word. Though mind-blowing also sums it up pretty nicely. I know my mind was blown.
Between the fight scenes and each failed attempt to shift, I was Krazy-Glued to the page. With each crunch of bone, each tear of flesh, each howl of pain, I could not tear my eyes away.
And those battles – and there were many, many battles – were insane. Seriously, fiercely insane. Not only were there daggers and swords, but there were talons and claws and fangs.
And that’s not even including the elemental magic. The fire would and could burn. The water could drown just as easily as it could heal. The air could suffocate or it could protect. And the earth would rumble and shake and devastate. It was epic.
But it wasn’t just that there were a few more battles in Shift than in Exiled, the battles in this book were those battles on steroids. They were bigger. The enemies were way more powerful. The fights were bloody and brutal, with outcomes that didn’t always favor the heroes.
And they were brilliantly detailed. Each slice, each stab, each snap, each twist made me feel like I was a part of the fight.
I thought I’d met all the different types of demons from the Underworld in Exiled, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong. The demons introduced in this sequel make the ones I met in the first book look cute and cuddly in comparison.
Without beings spoiler-y, I will just say that they’re way more disgusting, a million times harder to kill and there are so very many of them. And they are all dead-set on taking Chase down…Chase and anyone else who is willing to fight alongside him, that is.
Chase’s enemies have grown exponentially since the events that took place at the end of Exiled. Even former allies have been made to question whether siding with Chase is the best bet. Not only because of who his enemies are or what they are capable of, but because Chase has something that could be very valuable to anyone who gets their hands on it.
I loved going on this journey with Chase. I loved going into battle with him. I loved being there as he witnessed the shifts, as gruesome as they were. And I loved watching him become a hero.
What I didn’t love? The fact that now I have to wait for the next book’s release.
Almost immediately after finishing the first book Exiled (my review HERE ) I picked up the second book Shift. There were so many questions for the reader at the end of Exiled that I wanted to find out the answers as soon as possible!
The covers for these books are always so gorgeous and have such an amazing layout. Each item on the cover is purposefully placed and give a subtle hint as to what’s to come.
After the events of Exiled, Chase is now fuelled by rare powers with a serious vendetta targeted at Riley— his on the lam father who’s focused on promoting himself to a god-like state through a “not-Circle-approved” plan. Since Riley’s betrayal, the various factions of the Underworld (vampires, shifter groups) and the Circle that’s supposed to keep them in check is crumbling, paranoia abounds and each one of them has to decide whose side they’re on.
Merrick has a knack for snaring a reader’s attention in the first chapter by plunging them into the middle of a tense and bloody fight for survival, only this time around it’s Rayna that’s fighting her own internal shifter demon that’s literally ripping her apart from the inside out.
In Shift Rayna and Chase are both coming into some new and surprising abilities. It was really awe-inspiring to see these two trust each other so much and help each other through such difficult transitions. With all the life or death experiences they’ve had together it’s no wonder that some romantic aspect developed- FINALLY! Merrick does it in a very classy way though, the stolen moments together enhances the story and don’t detract from the visceral action; although with the introduction of a particular werecat shifter I think we might be seeing some relationship drama on the horizon (possible cat fight?).
Chase has some serious anger management issues and with all that magic brewing in him, he’s a walking natural disaster. Despite his shakiness at all these powers and everyone trying to get at him, Chase unexpectedly takes on a more serious role that results in him thinking through plans a little bit better, he knows what he’s willing to sacrifice and what he’s going to fight for. He’s grown so much over the course of the book and it just brings proud tears to my eyes.
We have some characters that carry over from Exiled such as Tiki, Willy, Marcus and Vincent. Tiki is hilarious in his attempts to assimilate into the human world, I especially love the scene where he explains his hate of human clothing due to it’s…restrictive properties. Marcus is still the intimidating muscle man, Vincent is definitely up to no good, but it’s the storyline that Merrick puts Willy through that takes the cake. I was on the edge of my seat with Willy - over the course of Exile Willy - to me - was this lovable stuttering demon that needed protection, but Merrick puts him through his paces and he changes into a completely unexpected bad ass that I love even more!
The villains of this story are so diabolical. Riley and the Dark Brothers are playing dirty and doing some very ‘Inception’-esque mind assaults on Chase. These sequences were written in such a way that there were times where reality and dream blurred, which created a deliciously tense atmosphere knowing that Chase wasn’t really safe anywhere. One of my favorite parts is when Merrick introduces new demons in a new dimension, I was completely baffled by the dialogue and it kept me glued to the pages to figure out what was going on.
An interesting aspect to include was Chase’s flashbacks of Riley, it showed a completely different side to Riley and makes me wonder what pushed him into doing all of this in the first place. Merrick definitely did it again with Shift, it’s an action packed thrill ride with some out-of-left-field, game changing secret reveals that leaves the reader wondering where this rag tag team will go next!
Shift is the second book in The Protector series and was kindly provided to me by the author M.R. Merrick in exchange for my honest review.
I get quite nervous reading a sequel after loving the first in the series so much but I am so pleased to say that Shift was just as good if not better than Exiled; it’s one of those books that leaves you thinking long after you have finished it.
All I can say is "WOW! Just wow!!"
In Exiled we meet Chase Williams, a Demon Hunter who was exiled from the Circle and their protection at the age of 15. A lot has happened since then; he has lost his job, his home and his dearly loved mother but has also gained some extraordinary powers and some unusual and interesting friends.
Rayna Lansing is part Hunter-Witch-Demon-Shifter with some seriously kick-butt abilities, her relationship with Chase has always been sarcastic but they are forming a trust and bond with the similarities they both share with their pasts and it helps that their powers are in sync with one anothers.
Now put Chase and Rayna together and you get some amazing action scenes, intense interactions and a tad bit of romance. Shift shows the changes and the progress both characters have made; they seemed to have switched personalities – Chase to me seemed cool, calm and collected in Exiled but so much has happened that he seems to have a lot more angst and anger now as well as a multitude of questions and it is Rayna who is reigning him in – I still absolutely adore her wit and sass, she is one of my favorite female heroines but it was nice to see the obvious changes in their friendship/relationship.
I don’t want to give too much of the plot away to avoid spoilers, but Shift takes us on a magical journey with Chase trying to keep hold of the magical ring gifted to him by the Goddess Serephina, trying to avoid the underworld who don’t seem to let up on him, protecting Rayna from the pain of her first shift and her own personal struggles and dealing with his evil father Riley who is playing with his mind and still intent of ruling the underworld by raising a demon god.
All of the characters in this series are absolutely amazing and each compelling! Chase and Rayna of course steal the show but secondary characters – Tiki, Willy Morrow, Marcus Starkraven, Grams and even Vincent Taryk are developed perfectly and each with fascinating quirks, abilities and distinctive traits.
The world-building is truly unique and creative, there is a fantastic amount of action with some exciting plot twists and turns which certainly make for a fast-paced read; I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough I was so eager to find out what would happen next. Mr Merrick has a natural, wonderful way with words that draws you in and holds your attention, his writing is flawless. Shift is filled with witty, fun dialogue and characters you can’t help but adore. The imagery is also detailed and vivid; you are literally immersed in the story.
All in all, the Protector series by M.R. Merrick is an absolute must read for anyone who enjoys an exciting, fun-filled action and adventure ride with all the paranormal beings we have come to love and enjoy.
Special mention to the amazing covers as well. Now to harass Mr. M for book 3!!
Chase, my favorite demon hunter EVER, is back in the second installment of the Protector series. He’s back and totally freaking blowing my mind with EPICNESS!
Chase suffers a tragic loss at the hand of Riley… his FATHER, at the end of Exiled (you must read it to find out what it is!). He’s learning to cope with his sadness and anger- trying to control his newly discovered elements. Being emotional isn’t so ideal when you have fire and water literally at your command and they are fueled by your emotions…
Chase and Rayna are searching for clues as to what Serephina’s Ring (first book… So I won’t go into details…) does and WHY The Circle, every Underworlder and Riley would do almost ANYTHING to get their hands on it.
“This is just a dream, Chase, but I can still kill you.”
Rayna’s half-demon/shifter side is running rampant this time around, and she refuses to seek help outside Marcus and Chase, believing if they can’t help her then she’s doomed. But the Hollowlights (werecat shifters) have other plans and come to persuade Rayna to let them help her. If you’ve read Exiled, you can imagine what she told them to do with THAT idea.
SO many things happen in Shift, families are brought together… battles are fought, alliances are formed, living rooms are set aflame, and the Visceratti don’t take kindly to their slimy, snake-like Princess being slain…
“You do the trials and die. Or you refuse and I kill you.”
Chase is a hero’s hero… I LOVE him. He is brave, selfless, sweet, sarcastic, funny, unsure of himself… and willing to FIGHT for what he believes in. FIGHT for those he loves. FIGHT for the freedom of people who would sooner spit on him than look at him. Shift is a story about honor, and KNOWING you can BE who you need to be, even if you feel like you can’t.
Shift is hilarious, witty and amazingly addictive. And the characters… I LOVE them!!! EVERY character, from secondary ones like Tiki and Vincent to Rai (the freaking bird!) all have especially unique characteristics that make them so much fun to read and impossible to forget!
And I do believe that Vincent and I were separated at birth. Just sayin. Yeah, he’s SORT OF, definitely not the a GOOD guy… but he’s not horrible either. He’s just so stuck up and snobby, but incredibly hilarious and a little bit terrifying. See? I do believe I just described myself perfectly!
“My god you should have that… condition looked at. Just hearing your voice makes me want to rip off my own ears… or your throat.” ~Vincent (you can clearly see why he’s my fav! I can just imagine the look of pure snooty disdain on his perfect vampiric face!)
Shift is an adventure like you’ve never experienced and has battle scenes so well choreographed you’ll read them twice. Shift takes a hold of you and does not let you go until the LAST WORD! M.R. Merrick left me breathless… and DYING for MORE!
→ Read my CROWNED Review of Exiled (The Protector #1)
This means he’s two for two… AND tomorrow… M.R. Merrick and I have an EPIC surprise and an AMAZING giveaway for you guys!! So don’t miss it!
I read Exiled, the first book in MR Merrick’s The Protector Series, and was totally blown away by his writing style and world building talent. As soon as I found out that the 2nd book in the series was coming out I began to leave subtle Twitter hints MR Merrick’s way. When that didn’t work I resorted to begging, which ironically, worked. ;) (Actually, all I really had to do was ask – who knew?) How I got my hands on Shift is beside the point, the important part is that this is one sequel that lives up to the first book in a series.
Shift takes up pretty much where Exiled leaves off. (Now would probably be a good time to let you know if you haven’t read the first book, you might find spoilers in this review. Consider yourself warned and go download Exiled at Amazon- now!) Everyone is still recovering from the trauma that unfolded at the end of Exiled, especially Chase. No one came away from the last book unscathed, but Chase’s life was changed more drastically than anyone’s. Getting beyond hiding that pain from everyone around him is a big part of his character development in Shift. Although I wanted to shake Chase and scream at MR Merrick a couple of times while I was reading Shift (I actually may have done that second one – whoops ;) ) it was necessary and important, still painful to experience through his character, but inevitable for him to have to go through.
The other characters in Shift don’t escape their own personal torture either. Rayna is fighting her own personal battle and lovable, stuttering Willy is also subject to his own brand of character development. How each of these characters handle the situations they are dealt is what keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. That being said, to say that Shift is full of action is an understatement. I’ve discovered through these two books that MR Merrick likes to start books off with a bang. From the first chapter on there are slight lulls in the action, but the characters are never given much of a break. You just know that around the next corner, shortly after Marcus leaves or when Rayna and Chase are …. well, you’ll have to read Shift to find out the rest.
Aside from all the action, The Protector Series is about loyalty, family and friendship. The development of the relationship between all of these characters is amazing to read and not just the relationship between Rayna and Chase. These characters all grow and become totally different people by the end of the book. It’s not forced. They make mistakes along the way and they learn from them. In short, the formula that MR Merrick has used to create this series works.
In Shift we meet new characters that are sure to play even bigger roles in the next books. New types of paranormals as well as unique worlds are introduced and even though Chase learns more about the power he has gained, there is still a lot of mystery behind it all that needs to be solved. That’s a good thing because I am no where near done wanting to experience more of this series. So when does the next book in The Protector Series come out?
Interest in the book: I was totally impressed with the first book, Exiled, in The Protector series by M.R. Merrick, and looked forward to jumping back into Chase’s chaotic life. Or his arms? Either works for me.
World-building: Hot damn, the world-building in this book was Ah to the Some. Shifters are more prominent in this book, and I absolutely loved the drama and action they brought to the story. Learning specifics about Shifter life and magic was interesting and entertaining. On another note, Chase is plagued by Riley and other nasty characters in his dreams, causing physical and mental trauma during play time. This type of magic is uber scary!
Characters: Chase! My oh my, how this young man has bloomed before our very eyes. Dealing with grief from events in Exiled has led Chase down the path of retribution. Chase has hardened up a bit and has morphed into someone who does. not. play. As the series title so aptly portrays, Chase is ever so loyal and protective of those he loves, always the do-gooder and never backing down from what is right. And hello, confidence. Where has confident Chase been all my life?
Rayna also has serious screen times as she struggles with the beast within. Her storyline was exciting and anxiety-ridden, but she is a tough cookie and can take it. Chase is beside her every step of the way, and she too remains by his side, working with him to gain control of his erratic powers. The budding romance between Chase and Rayna is so raw, natural and beautiful. On the topic of romance, M.R. Merrick drew out the tension, interrupting prime smooch time on numerous occasion, resulting in the angry fist of doom more than once.
I must give a quick shout out for Rai! I fell in love with this creature in Exiled and was giddy with excitement that she remained in Chase’s life. I adore her and find her to be so valuable, mentally and physically. We also get to see a side of Vincent the vampire that I didn’t know he had, and I was quite freaked out by his demeanor in this book.
Lasting Impressions:Explosive is the word I am using the describe this book. The story opens up with an explosive scene that resulted in my jaw making nice with the floor. All I could think about through the entire opening scene was “WOAH!” (Think Joey Lawrence a la Blossom). Then we are hurled through explosive actions scenes, more explosive dramatic scenes, and maybe an explosive romantic notion or two.
The last line of the book only means there is much explosive fun to be had. I love where the story is headed and have no doubts that M.R. Merrick will give us nothing less than explosive epic storytelling!
Wait. Could you just give me like 2 seconds? I can’t catch my breath from all the sheer awesomeness that I just witnessed. Yeah, that’s right, I said witnessed. Because what I just experienced wasn’t just reading. I don’t know how M.R. Merrick does it but he took me on an all-out thrill ride with this one folks. It’s no surprise to you, if you have read his first book Exiled, that we are dealing with an action guru and [I didn’t think it was possible] he stepped up his game. I am always a bit nervous reading the second book in a series. It’s a make or break kind of thing and M.R. made it his bitch. Sorry for the language, I am just all pumped up! Blame Merrick!
Shift starts right where Exiled left off, which I loved. Because to be honest, I was a tab bit [okay, a huge bit] scared of how Chase would cope with all that happened to him. Chase has this wall around him and I was scared he was going to let it crush him. So, this book had me biting my nails like, the whole time. If not worrying about Chase I was freaking out about Ryan [who is a badass heroine if I EVER saw one. Seriously. She is the shit.] or having my mind blow at the changing roll Willy [my dear dear Willy] endured. I really wish I could go on this big long ramble about what I am actually trying to say to you guys, but really. You HAVE to read this book and see for your own eyes. I want you to feel what I felt when I was flipping these pages!
If you ever read my reviews, you might get the hint that I LOVE books that have character building. Most books do, I know, I know. But I was already super in love with Chase from Exiled and getting to see him open up and trust people was just like, awegasmic. The character building wasn’t the only thing that took my breath away in this book. It was the sense that the whole time I was reading I was seriously right there with them. And with Shift focusing on these characters finding out about and facing all these demons within themselves it blew me away. I seriously wonder if Merrick doesn’t have some kind of portal that allows him to travel to these people. Honestly, M.R. is there something you’re not telling us?! I’m on to you. [And if you really do have said portal, can I come with you?!]
Overall, I think it is pretty safe to say this book blew my mind. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better way of continuing not only Chase’s story but those around him and I can’t wait to see where we will be taken next. But, let me warn you. Once you pick it up, you truly can’t put it down. So turn off the television put the kids to bed and buy this book. Have your coffee ready in the morning though, you will need it after that all night reading binge.
Rating: ★★★★★ Five Action Packed Stars [I warned you people]
Blaming himself for his mother's death, Chase can't bare the idea of losing anyone else he cares about. But everywhere he turns he's putting those very people in danger as he tries to protect the ring given to him by the Goddess. Everyone is after it from his power crazed father to every demon this side of the underworld. Then there's the circle who seems to think it's rightfully theirs. All of this takes a backseat as Chase tries to find a way to keep Rayne from splitting into pieces as a beast tries to break free from inside her. And Tiki is out partying until all hours, not to mention the strange pack that Willy is hanging with. How is Chase supposed to keep everyone safe and stop his father at the same time? And don't forget he's supposed to be training to learn how to control his still new elemental powers. What is a gorgeous boy to do?
My Thoughts:
Can I just say ---- damn this book is a whirlwind! If you love the action then bring this one on baby! Chase gets two breaths after one battle before all hell breaks loose again. What is so fabulous about this read is that along with the fast paced ride, the characters are doing some growing. Love that. Chase is crushed by his mothers death and as he finds out more details about the events that surround it, he struggles more and more to reel in his emotions. At the same time, his power is getting stronger. He could easily rip a few people apart for their role in her death. But he doesn't. Anger is a constant companion but through the non-stop action, he learns what's really important. He makes decisions that only he could make correctly and only after going through what he went through. I really liked Chase in Exiled. He was snarky and had just enough power to be kickass. But I fell in love with him in Shift. He grew into his role as leader of a rag tag group and managed to strengthen that group in the process. I'm proud of you, Chase.
As for Rayne, I really didn't feel the connection with her in Exiled but I discovered her jealous devotion to Chase in Shift. Thought she might claw some eyes out or something a few times - talk about almost cat fight. Of course I totally love her now. And Willy! Yay Willy - you rock you stuttering demon you! I think the characters are my favorite part of these books. They endure so much and I'm cheering for them through every battle. I can't wait to see what happens next and if Chase can save the day. I'm leaning towards yes but only after being drug through the underworld to do it. =)
If you love a more urban fantasy feel with a few trips to the underworld thrown in along the way and some kickass characters with non-stop action, then this book is a MUST READ. This one will have you up late to finish it. Pick it up - you won't regret it!
To say this book is incredibly amazing is an understatement. This book was so absolutely beyond amazing, that there are no words to describe it! I have made a few attempts at this review actually, and the first few were just incoherent babbling about my love for it. So now I will do a composed review that you can understand. From the first page it is intense, heart pumping action. It was like an adrenaline rush that I couldn't come down from. M.R. Merrick takes us back into Chase's world full force, and it blew me away! The fantasy is phenomenal! The story, the relationships, and the secrets and lies are all packaged into the most intense thrill ride you can imagine. Just when it starts to slow down enough for you to catch your breath, the action and excitement ramps right back up!
Chase is hurting. He has just lost his mother, and his home. He is living with people he barely knows. He is still trying to figure out why he is the protector and what it means, all the while still fighting for his life, and the lives of those he cares about. He is trying to learn to control his magic, and now it is getting stronger. He knows that the ring is the key to something and he must guard it , but with everyone wanting to get their hands on it, especially Riley, it's not proving to be an easy task. Chase had major character growth in Exiled, and I think he had much more in this book. He is so broken and you really feel what he is feeling.
Rayna has her own struggles going on. She has a demon inside of her trying to find it's way out. Literally. She is trying to fight it with all that she has, but in the end everyone fears it will kill her. I love Rayna's character because she is so strong and brave. She is very defiant and stands her ground. With everything she is dealing with she still is concerned about Chase, and will do anything she can to help him.
In Shift, we discover more about the characters we already know, and meet some new ones. The writing is so fantastic that you feel that you truly are getting to know each and every person. I could really feel the emotions of the main characters, and I felt like I was part of their world. It was like I was inside the book with them, part of the story. I can't really write much more for fear of giving anything away to those who have not read Exiled yet. Reading Shift felt like a great roller coaster. Fast, a lot of big drops and twists, and barely enough time to catch my breath. It was amazing from the first page to the last, and I didn't want it to end. I am now going to be a mess and full of anticipation until the next book comes out! M.R Merrick has done it again! Fantastic book. It is a must read!! I would give it way more than 5 stars if I could!!!
It is no secret that I was positively blown away by M.R. Merrick's debut novel, EXILED. I just couldn't say enough good about it. I have encouraged countless readers to pick it up, and have gotten great feedback from those that have. I won't lie. I was more than excited when the opportunity to review SHIFT came up. When you trust in the ability of an author to bring a fresh, exciting story to life, it's pretty easy to get stoked.
Chase suffers a staggering loss at the end of EXILED, and is really having a hard time coming to grips with his new reality. Recent events have made him a much sought after prize for the Underworld and the Circle. Chase is seeking vengeance against his father, and his capabilities for seeing that come to fruition are growing. And it isn't just Chase that's discovering strengths and powers. Multiple characters develop so much in this plot. There are huge revelations concerning Rayna. It was so intense, experiencing the changes happening with her. My favorite stuttering demon, Willy, really steps up to the plate and I'll admit that I even teared up a little.
Not every story has to have some mind-numbing romance angle. Sometimes adventure and honor are more important, and that's how it is with The Protector series. Romance isn't the main focus of this story. Chase and Rayna have only known each other a few months. It's NORMAL for people not to be 'crazy in love' and all over each other from the get go. They are young, have gone through a lot of crap in their short lives, and all his life Chase was taught not to trust any Underworlder. Besides, they've got other things to worry about... like stopping the apocalypse. I am extremely pleased with the pacing of Chase and Rayna's relationship. This story is action packed from beginning to end, for sure. Some people don't like that because they say you don't get to know a character as well, but I disagree. You can tell A LOT about a character from the way they act in a high-stress situation, and there are plenty of those in SHIFT. It was easy for me to envision each scene, which is something that I have come to rely on with this author. I was able to do the same thing with book one. Merrick's descriptive storytelling is still shining like a beacon amid the waves of monotonous, predictable storytelling floating around in the young adult genre.
Chase's powers are growing, and once he gains full control, he will be a force to be reckoned with. I really have no idea where Merrick is going to go with this. I just know that I absolutely want to be along for the ride. I am standing by my original recommendation of the Protector series to anyone who loves a good fantasy thrill.
As you all know, I loved EXILED. And I mean Loved! The book was pure epicness, and full of so much action. Loved it. You know how when you love a book so much, you are so nervous about book #2 because you want so much for it to be just as good! Well, I tell you what. It was BETTER then book 1. Yes, better! Shift will take you on the ride of your life, literally. The book includes so much action, and kick-ass-ness that you when you are done you will say one word. "Wow". Shift starts off where Exiled left off. Chase is still dealing with the heartache of losing the only person that he had left. In Shift you will get to know the characters more. I felt more of a connection to each and everyone of them. Vincent included. Chase is learning how to control his powers that seem to be getting stronger faster then he can understand them. Chase still does not understand why he is the protector. He now has to guard, and protect the ring that everyone seems to want. Riley wants it so that he can bring back the evil god, Ithereal. He must keep it safe, so that this does not happen. While keeping himself alive and his friends. Something inside of Rayna wants out. The beast. It's at the surface and is slowly scratching it's way out. Fighting everyday, to keep herself from shifting, is putting her in greater danger then anything. Because in the end, she will have to shift, but will it be such a shift to kill Rayna? With the guidance of Chief, Rayna will have to face the one thing that she has been wanting to put behind her. The Beast. You will learn more about the other characters; Willy, Tiki & Marcus plus you will meet some new ones. Some you will like, and some not so much. M R Merrick's writing skill is phenomenal in Shift. Since Exiled you can tell that he has grown as a writer, as well as his characters as individuals. Shift will fill in all the gaps and answer the questions that you were left with while reading Exiled. Merrick brings the action to the max. You will actually fill like you are IN the action. Kicking mad ass, right along with the gang. I am so happy to be among the bloggers to get to review Merrick's second book in The Protector series. Shift was beyond amazing. If you have not read Exiled, well you should do that. Because you will love every second of it, right along with Shift. Action is what shines in Merrick's books. You will not have to deal with love triangles. & here there action. You will not regret these books, the words will pull you into this fantasy world. And you will not want to leave.
Again, the author M.R. Merrick was able to give more than asked. Action, suspense, unpredictable discovery and many others. After reading the first novel in this series: (The Protector: Exiled), I immediately fell in love with Chase and Rayna! As in the first book and since it's a sequel, the main character is Chase and I love the fact that it’s a boy. I really enjoyed reading Chase point of view in both books! Less rare these days, but still very interesting and brings a little change!
I loved the first book and the second didn't disappoint me! There are several new elements in this book that helps us understand more and more from the first book. I think we learn much more about Rayna in this sequel. You learn a lot about his past and her powers and even more! Oh I wish I could tell you what I discovered in the second book!
As I mentioned earlier, this book contains plenty of action, secrets statements, and continuation of the first tasks unfinished or misses and put asides temporarily to allow the story to progress. The course is somewhat in the same kind of the first book, but since it's more developed than and also as much interesting as the first novel.
The author's style is particularly well developed. Easy to read and enjoyable. M.R. Merrick will allow you to get away a few minutes in an unreal world, but this is what every avid reader wants!
M.R. Merrick also surprised me on a certain subject. I didn't expect to read about some development between Chase and Rayna, but I think it's something that could be well exploited if of course the author does not fall into eroticism! It should be remembered that although the main characters are young and this book is for young adults, this kind of feelings / emotions / experiences are normal at this age. M.R. Merrick was able to implement his ideas well and knows how to communicate it!
A super interesting end that allows us to consider a third book just as shattering as the first two books. I look forward to how this small team of '' protectors'' will get the things out in the next story!
Loved Exiled, I love Shift and I will love book 3 of The Protector series! I recommend this book and sincerely the entire series!
Holy Damn! Out of all the things that I thought would happen in book #2, THAT happened!
What's, "THAT", you ask.....like I'm gonna ruin it.
OK, deep breath.
This book blew my mind, so I'm going to try my damnedest not to ruin it for everyone else. Coming off the death of his mother, Chase is trying harder than ever to control these new elements fighting inside of him. So, to make matters worse, the Council now wants to know EVERYTHING about Chase, his friends, and why he is receiving all gifts from the Goddess. But with Chase being himself, he tells the Council where they can shove. (Avoiding them is the best possible thing for him and his friends....right?) Running, fighting, and being afraid are like the 3 rules in this book, I know you wouldn't associate Chase with fear, but sometimes when you have no where to hide, it can bring any emotion out in someone. But as you read on seeing Chase over coming all of these things is what really had my pulled in, because it seemed like whenever anyone was in a corner, there was always that moment that turned the tables and gave you hope!
From page 1 I was waiting for a blow up. A fight, a kiss, SOMETHING.....and when it came, damn. Was I ready for what happened? No. I am still on the fence about this moment. I think that it opened some wonderful side plots, but I just loved the way this character was....though they are pretty badass now ;)
One quirk that I LOVED in book 2 was all of Chase's "extras", he's like the feckin' Inspector Gadget of Elements! It just kept getting better!
Ok, I'm seriously getting to wrapped up in all the little details, let's talk about this as a whole. It was all the way around an action packed roller coaster, with a little romantic drizzle on top. Matt was nothing short of genius when his mind created the concept for Chase, Rayna and their world. I have always been one of his biggest fans, and will continue to be until he stops writing. If you haven't had the chance to picked up either Exiled, or Shift, you are truly missing out on something unique & original. Now....let's all patiently await the #3!
As was the case with Merrick’s debut Exiled, the sequel Shift is just as darkly exciting and magical with just a drop of romance (which *cough* I’m hoping for more of in book 3 by the way Matthew *cough*. Yes, yes I like me a side of romance with my paranormal). Unlike with a few other books that I’ve read, this certainly wasn’t snail paced. There’s a lot going on to constantly keep your eyes glued and your attention permanently focused on the story. As you turn the first page you’re thrown right in to the middle of a scene ****spoiler alert**** where Rayna is trying to fight against turning in to a werecat so from that moment on you’re immediately gripped, sucked in to the story, not wanting to stop reading until you’ve gotten to the very end (which, if you’re a human, becomes tricky when you have to stop to eat, pee and sleep. Damn not being a modern day sparkly vampire! :p ).
Merrick’s writing just gets better and better and even more un-put-downable as the story unfolds and we learn more and more about each character. I love books that have witty and sarcastic retorts and Shift has plenty of that, of which I think mostly take place between Chase and Rayna or Chase and Vincent and I have to admit, a couple of times, I kinda found myself wanting to bash Chase and Vincent’s heads together ha ha ha. Chase, Rayna and Willy’s characters progress even more in Shift as does Chase and Rayna’s relationship. Chase is battling with his new found powers, Rayna’s battling with her shifter self and poor old Willy…well let’s just say he goes through some major changes too which totally had me in shock and had my jaw dropping about 3 feet to the floor which brings me back around full circle to say there’s a lot of surprises in store for you when you read Shift, trust me. It’s demon-hunters, shapeshifters, witches, vamps and fairytales all covered in awesome sauce and wrapped in a little red bow. This is a series that all lovers of the paranormal genre should definitely have on their bookshelves/e-readers.
Shift is the second book in The Protector Series and it picks up where Exiled has left off. Man oh man does Chase have it bad. In Exiled he found out some things that just don't add up. While struggling to come to terms with this news he received he is also struggling with his feelings for Rayna. He knows she is a good witch but there are some things that just don't add up. If you loved Exiled, you'll absolutely love Shift. This sequel to the action packed adventure Exiled takes you on another journey through dimensions and battling demons. Chase and company try to not only save the universe, but find out the truth about themselves. Merrick's writing has improved a great deal since Exiled, it's phenomenal actually. Not only has he improved his editing by far, and Exiled wasn't that badly done, but his ability to make the characters even more real has grown. The self searching and character development in this story was very well done. As expected, the story is stuffed cover to cover with adventure, drama, action, a little romance and comedy tossed in to leave no dull moments anywhere. I can't wait for the next in the series. As all serial endings, it leaves it open for another face off another day, but at the same time closes the chapter on the events of the plot. I loved this book. Someday someone in Hollywood needs to see this series, it would make awesome action movies.
Oh yeah, still loving this story!! I still cannot believe some of the things that happened in this book! And this won't be a book that you can just read a little bit every day for a while - you will wanna tear through it! There is so much action, especially the second half. It's like a pack of fire-crackers - Bam!Bam!Bam!Bam! Never a dull moment! Oh, and that thing that you keep wishing Chase would GET A CLUE about? Yeah, I think he FINALLY gets it. *wink* Rayna & Chase get to be even more badass as the story continues! Willy - I just wanna give him a big hug & make him some cookies! Tiki - would be so fun to hang out with! And then there's Vincent - he's still an arrogant jerk but that's no surprise. These are really some of the most interesting characters out there! I can't wait for more!
Another top notch book. Thanks for taking time away from my pregnant wife Matty! This book has officially left me wanting more, and I can't wait until the next one comes out. If you want to continue following Chase and Rayna, you need to pick this up. I read through this in two days! Mind you, I didn't have time for much else, but it grabs you and won't let go. To think, I got the first book on my Kindle because it was 1.99. I would pay way more to see what happens to Chase in the end. Very well written and the characters were well developed. If you don't pick up this book, I will come to your house, and punch you in the face...I will then comment on your lovely choice of color scheme and walk out.
Anything I can possibly say would be an understatement. Wow, I absolutely LOVED the 1st book of this series Exiled, this one was a home run! Completely, undoubtedly, unbelievably amazing. So far this is a perfect series. I could not put this book down and I finished it within a 24 hour period. Amazing character development, with a whole range of personal struggles. Atomic bomb of action, riveting edge of your seat plot, complete with twists and turns impossible to see coming. Flawless pace, and incomparable world setting. Perfect balance of romance. This book should come with it's own warning. "Warning: For One sitting only."
Fantastic sequel to a great series! More great action and I will say this again like I did for the first book in the series, Exiled, I just love the way Merrick describes the fighting scenes, surroundings, & characters. He just makes it so easy to imagine this world and the characters he has created. He writes about demons/shifters/vampires in a way I've never read before. I got even more attached to the main & supporting characters in Shift (love them!), especially Willy who is one of my favorites. I'm so looking forward to reading more from this author. He has quickly become of my favorite YA authors.
Nonstop magic, mayhem, and Merrick-level madness, I'm obsessed.
If Exiled was a punch to the gut, Shift is a roundhouse kick to the soul. Merrick doesn’t just raise the stakes, he flips the whole board and sets it on fire. From page one, I was thrown headfirst into Chase’s chaotic world of power, loss, and impossible choices, and I didn’t want to come up for air.
The emotional weight in this book is real. Chase’s growth is messy, painful, and beautifully human. Rayna? A literal storm wrapped in badassery. And Riley... let’s just say I’m watching my back now.
The action scenes are wild, the pacing is relentless, and the world-building just keeps getting deeper. Honestly, if you like your fantasy dark, your magic dangerous, and your characters perfectly imperfect, this one’s a must-read.
Spoiler-FREE review sentence or two concerning ‘Shift’
“We make homes out of what we’re given, but they do not define who we are.”
3.0/5.0 Another decent addition to a solid series. It has the same highs and lows from the first book so really there are no surprises going into it. If you enjoyed the first one then by all means dive right in. I will say though that this series could be a primer called “How to jump to conclusions and why it’s not helpful”.
*This review contains spoilers, do not read if you haven't read Shift*
Shift is a fantastic follow-up to Exiled! A lot of books I've read have fallen into second-book syndrome, but this definitely wasn't the case with Shift. It has the perfect amount of action, as much as (if not more) Exiled does. We get to know more about the characters in Shift, and they go through a lot of changes in this novel.
Chase is in even more danger from his father, Riley, and the Dark Brothers. They begin to invade his dreams, causing him actual physical pain. Rayna is struggling to control her beast, which tries to escape from inside her, causing her a lot of pain too. Willy is bitten by a werewolf, and he turns into one of them. He agrees to stay with the Shadowpack to find out how to survive as a werewolf. As you can see, all three of them are going through a lot in this book. It's amazing to see how these three teenagers overcome their obstacles and fight alongside each other for what they believe in. All three of them are so different - a hunter, a part-witch, hunter and shifter, and a half-demon-turned-werewolf. And yet they are so loyal to each other. M.R. Merrick portrays a beautiful story of loyalty and friendship in Shift.
This is one of those books that is impossible to put down. It draws you in right from the beginning, and compels you to keep your eyes glued to it up until the final page. Every single one of the characters is developed further, and we get a deeper insight into their lives.
Chase, as always, is under a lot of pressure, and this increases with his development of the ability to control two more elements - earth and air. Chase can now control all four elements, and this makes me think that he's going to be able to control lightning in the next book, Release! Chase accompanies Rayna to the Hollowlights, where she is taught to control her beast. This shows his unfailing loyalty towards his friends, and also that he wants to protect her. This stems from his fear of losing someone else close to him, and his role as the Protector is made clearer to us. The ring causes even more trouble for Chase in this book, and he ends up losing it to Drake, one of the Dark Brothers, in exchange for the safety of his friends.
Rayna is as badass as ever, though we get to see a lot more of her vulnerable side in Shift. She suffers a lot during her initial changes, where she tries to push her beast back down inside her. Moreover, there is an emotional struggle within her when she meets her father, Jonathan, for the first time. She is furious with him, and doesn't want anything to do with him. Later on, when she completes her change into a majestic black cat, she feels a connection to Jonathan, and that confuses her. Rayna grows a lot in this book, and she has had to make a lot of difficult decisions. In my opinion, they were the right ones! I liked that there was some romance between her and Chase towards the end of the book. I'm really looking forward to their relationship developing further in Release.
Willy was awesome in this book! I didn't like him much in Exiled, since he was a bit too timid for my taste. Plus, his stutter annoyed me. He stutters considerably less in Shift, and finally makes a stand. He defies the leader of the Shadowpack in order to fight alongside Chase and Rayna. That was a surprise, and really commendable. I hope we get to see more of this new Willy in future books.
Tiki has always fascinated me, especially because of his enigmatic nature. No one knows much about him, and the fact that he's from a different dimension makes him exotic. I love how hilarious he is. Tiki certainly adds a touch of humour to the otherwise action-filled novel. We see a violent side of Tiki in this book, and I liked that. He'd always seemed a bit mellow to me before. Marcus is also a lot more present in this book, and I finally understood why he does what he does. He was in love with Chase's mom, and I felt so much sympathy for him. At least he still has Rayna! Now I know why he's so protective of her, and now of Chase too. Vincent is exactly the same - still untrustworthy, still infuriating, still incredibly awesome. I hope Vincent finally chooses to be on Chases's side, so they can finally put their trust in him. Vincent cares for Rayna, and that's one part of him that really surprises me. I didn't think someone like him would care for another that much, especially someone of a different kind. Vincent's incessant banter with Chase and Rayna adds more humour into the book, and there's this one line Rayna says to him that I found incredibly funny -
"For someone who's five hundred years old, you're an immature dick."
The plot intensifies in Shift, and I read most of the book with my heart in my mouth. Everything in this book intrigued and excited me, and I loved every second of it. I'd kill to see this series made into movies! The scenes are so visual inside my head, and they whiz past with the fast pace of the plot. Shift is yet another roller-coaster of events. M.R. Merrick has made me love the characters he's created, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for them in Release! Thank you to M.R. Merrick for providing me with an e-book copy of the book :)
Yet another book my M R Merrick that I'm rating 5 stars on goodreads, I'm glad to hear that book 5 is on its way in the near future, 😅 I don't know what else I can say because whatever I have to say about book 2 are all Spoilers.
