A cruising couple live a life many only dream of aboard their 42-foot boat in Mexico's hauntingly beautiful Sea of Cortez. But their chosen sea has a serpent: Mexico's out-of-control drug trade.
After witnessing a drug-deal gone wrong, they set off a deadly chain of events that lands them in a sea of intrigue involving a best friend, the Mexican Federal Police, the DEA, US Coast Guard, the INS, and a nasty drug cartel.
This fast-paced adventure is a must-read for anyone who has ever dreamed of cutting the lines and shoving off to adventure.
Jinx Schwartz is the USA TODAY Best-selling author of the award-winning Hetta Coffey series.
JUST ADD WATER, first in the series, introduces Hetta, a sassy Texan with a snazzy yacht, and she's not afraid to use it. JUST ADD SALT, JUST ADD TROUBLE, JUST DESERTS, JUST THE PITS, JUST NEEDS KILLIN', AND JUST DIFFERENT DEVILS get her into hot Mexican Waters. JUST PARDON MY FRENCH, BOOK 8, FINDS HETTA IN FRANCE and Book 9: JUST FOLLOW THE MONEY, takes a wild ride on two continents, and JUST FOR THE BIRDS, Book 10, gets her afowl of exotic bird smugglers. Book 11 finds her in Texas, and living in an RV until her boat goes missing back in Mexico, and in Just On Porpoise (12 ) her attention is drawn to the almost extinct Vaquita, and JUST SO WRONG (13) finds Hetta taking on the dogfighting trade. Her other books: The Texicans (Texas 1806-1836 Historical Western), Land of Mountains, a YA/TWEEN set in Haiti in the 1950's, Troubled Sea, a thriller in Mexico's Sea of Cortez, and BAJA GET AWAY, suspensful romance in Mexico.
With Just Add Salt, Jinx Schwartz has slipped her cable and hit another home run. Yes, I know I’m mixing nautical and baseball metaphors, but the author does that too, and... well, it’s catchin’.
This book has as many chuckles as Just Add Water, but there is a bit more tension—which, literarily speaking, is a good thing. In this volume, Hetta is in a lot more hot water—or salt—and you just never know how she’s possibly going to come out on top... or with whom. I think it’s quite clear from the text, though, that, in her youth, the author had a crush on Ricky Ricardo. Just sayin’.
Just Add Salt will have you alternately chuckling and biting your nails, and you will discover many new things, such as what a panga is. Now I know what it was we were riding in that caused a woman from our cruise ship to get a broken arm.
Just Add Salt will make you want to listen to your old LP of Dark Side of the Moon. No, I’m not going to tell you what I mean by that. You’ll just have to read the book.
"Just Add Salt" by Jinx Schwartz tells another amusing sailing adventure featuring the hilarious Hetta Coffey. This time Hetta is off to Mexico as an undercover civil engineer spy for a Japanese company. Since her boyfriend is working in the middle East she is taking her best gal pal with her and hopefully some competent sea captain. But before she gets there she has to sort out minor issues, such as a body attached to her anchor, the coast guard and whatever else comes her way on the journey. Coffey is a really great character, edgy, funny and definitely unconventional. Her stories are a perfect blend of adventure and misadventure and Schwartz does a fantastic job at adding an equally entertaining supportive cast, whether it be her secret blabbing friend or a personal trainer in the gym, no opportunity for a laugh is wasted in this story, making the plot almost secondary to the fun that runs through the book. If you are looking for a good laugh and entertainment this series is for you.
As a boater who has sailed the waters described in this story I really enjoyed this book. My recollection of the entrance to Mag Bay was not as harrowing as theirs, but then each person's experience is different. It brought back many memories of cruising in Mexican waters, including my encounters with whales. The story was marred by the 20 errors I found in the book. If the author would like a list of those I considered to be errors, send a request to amacd55 (at) gmail (dot) com. 4.5 stars when the errors are fixed.
Hertz has accepted a job that will bring in big bucks and allow her to take her yacht down to Mexico. A fun fast moving storyline and a strong well developed plot. The characters are strong and entertaining.
Just Add Salt is the second book in the Hetta Coffey mystery series. This book has almost as much snarky humor and witty banter, particularly between Hetta and her friend Jan, as the first book in the series. There is a new character to participate in the witty banter this time too – a sea captain they have hired to take Hetta’s yacht, the Raymond Johnson, to the site of a new job.
Hetta and Jan have been planning a trip to Mexico on the yacht with their boyfriends, the Jenkins brothers (Robert, aka Jenks, and Lars). But work gets in the way. Since all of them are independent contractors, when Hetta’s friend Fidel Wontrobski (aka the Trob) proposes a job for the Jenkins brothers in Kuwait for big bucks, and offers Hetta a different job in Mexico, also for ridiculously big bucks, the planned vacation starts to fall apart.
Jan’s specialty in accounting software isn’t needed for Hetta’s job, but Hetta adds her to the payroll as a whale expert. The job was introduced as environmentally and politically incorrect – that’s why the company wanted Hetta – and part of the environmental problem has to do with whales. Another friend of Hetta’s connects them with a real whale biologist – a real blessing under the circumstances.
So, once they have outfitted the Raymond Johnson with backups for all their systems, and backups for some of the backups, all at Jenks insistence, for which Hetta curses him when she has to pay for it all, but blesses him for when they encounter every problem known to a boat at the job site, and have finally found a captain willing to help get them to their destination, they set out.
This adventure seems somehow to be more dangerous than their first outing. They encounter obstacles like a lost and lovesick adolescent blue whale and a hurricane once they have arrived at their destination. But, thanks to the backup systems and competent help, these problems seem to pale in comparison with the local officials.
On the plus side, however, while Lars seems to have lost interest in Jan, the whale biologist, besides being both friendly and useful, turns out to hit it off with her perfectly.
1.5* really... Some big factual errors and the ditzy main character combined to make this a book a struggle to finish. The author didn't seem to do any background research at all; below are a few examples:
More than once in the book comments were made about the whales in the eastern Pacific heading north while it was November! The whales travel SOUTH from the Artic to winter in the Baja area. Since whales play a crucial role in the plot, this is a whopper of a mistake.
Another puzzling error was the comment that the hurricane turned left to head straight for the coast. Hurricanes & tropical storms move north (from the warm tropical waters) so the Baja coast would be to the right and the open ocean would be to the left. Maybe the author is from the eastern U.S. (where the coast would be on the storm's left) but then why set her book in California or not do her background research?
I might have been willing to overlook these sort of errors if the story had been a good one but it was only OK. I might have given the story 2.5* if there hadn't been these gross mistakes. The so-so plot combined with the lack of understanding of the eastern Pacific made this into a loser for me.
3.5 stars Hetty and Jane have a fun adventure on the open seas battling hurricanes, whales, spies, and more. Hetty accepts a sketchy job that requires her to be in Mexico earlier than the planned trip with the Jenkins’ brothers who are off to the Middle East on a job of their own. Meanwhile trouble is brewing for Jan and Les which is spilling over into Jenks and Hetti’s relationship. With a handsome but mysterious boat captain guiding them, threats warning them away from the job, reconnecting with Det. Martinez, and a marine biologist who may or may not be helping with their lovesick whale problem, Hetty just needs to get through this job and collect her paycheck without losing her boat, her relationship or her life.
Just Add Salt by Jinx Schwartz is the 2nd book in the Hetta Coffey Mystery series. When her boyfriend Jenks is unable to join Hetta on a sailing holiday to Mexico, she accepts an engineering job for a Japanese company and sets off on a sailing adventure only to come across corrupt officials, threatening emails, hurricanes and much more. An enjoyable fun book with great characters. Hetta and Jan are strong and capable women who know how to enjoy themselves and make a great duo. An entertaining adventure.
Jinx Schwartz's Just Add Salt is from the Hetta Coffey adventure series. Coffey is an engineer who lives on a swank yacht moored in San Francisco. Her assignments take her to exotic locations, this time Mexico's Baja coast, hired by a Japanese firm concerning a water desalination and salt recovery plant they intend to build there (hence the title). The trip was supposed to be a working vacation with her boyfriend Jenks but he has to bail out so Hetta takes along Jan, her blonde bombshell best friend instead. And a tall, dark Mexican captain she hires who just happens to look like Fabio. The adventure begins.
Call it adventure with a capital A. This is a fast moving yarn with more twists and turns than a boa constrictor. Especially well written, and harrowing, is Hetta, Jan, and Fabio's fight to the death with a two-headed hurricane – a once in a half century event. As the journey continues, our gal realizes that nobody is who they appear to be and there is an element who would just as soon see her disappear – permanently.
Despite Hetta's bring-it-on-buster fearless attitude she is not beyond using her considerable feminine wiles to thwart, and seriously infuriate, her male adversaries (she has no female adversaries). This is fun, entertaining storytelling from a very female perspective. Jinx Schwartz is a pro all the way. Highly recommended.
This was another delightful romp with Hetta Coffey the woman who's never short of a word to say, especially in argument. A working trip to Mexico on her beloved boat-now her home-Hetta encounters the bad guys who have a plot to pollute the sea with fresh water and to upset her friend Lonesome the whale who's currently making eyes at the boat as a possible mate. Hetta soon finds some of the baddies are actually the employers who hired her for the engineering job she's on. Chaos ensues leaving Hetta and her friend Jan on the run from the men with guns and bad intentions. Hetta is a marvel of a woman. She's opinionated, crass, strong and yet as weak as a kitten when love calls. Lacking faith in herself she thinks love is a temporary thing and her boyfriend Jenks will soon be on pastures new. To sit and cry or to kill him? She's not sure, but you'll find the whole thing delightful from start to finish.
If you like intrigue and excitement you will love Just Add Salt by Jinx Schwartz. It is full of action and adventure which kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.
The author did a great job of developing a story which was fast paced and full of intrigue. It has a well develop storyline which never loses its continuity. I found it to be a fun read and very believable.
Jinx Schwartz developed excellent characters which were very believable and real. It was easy to identify with them and follow the storyline. I have read the first volume, Just Add Water (see earlier review), and now this volume just adds to the strength of the lead heroin.
I really enjoyed Just Add Salt by Jinx Schwartz and I highly recommend this book to all readers.
This is the second in the Hetta Coffey mystery series. Hetta is a delightful character. Single, intelligent, self-employed and independent, she lives on a boat moored in the Oakland area. In this book, Hetta and her best friend Jan and their boyfriends (brothers Jenks and Lars) had plans to sail down to Mexico. Upset when the two men suddenly disappear on a job, Hetta accepts an assignment in Baja. This means that she'll have to sail down there on her own, during hurricane season. Naturally, Hetta gets into all kinds of trouble, including an amorous whale, a shady group of Japanese investors, and two hurricanes.
Fast-Paced Fun with a Mexican Flair! When I finished the first book in the series, I realized I had Hetta withdrawals. I hurried to Amazon and purchased Just Add Salt. I would advise reading the first book first because it supplies the background – where it all began. But I enjoyed the second book even more than the first. There is danger from the get-go and tension on every page. I love a mystery with a touch of romance, and this book has it all. What it doesn’t have is over-the-top graphic violence or explicit sex. The Hetta Coffey mysteries are a refreshing change and I look forward to reading more.
Hilarious, witty, and entertaining are words that best describe this fast-paced adventure set in Mexico. The rapport between gutsy Hetta Coffey and her obliging sidekick, Jan, is humorous yet believable as these two women struggle to get out of life-threatening situations that come at them from all angles. The descriptions of the characters are distinct and I could picture each one in my mind—including the whale! Although I’m not familiar with the technical aspects of life aboard a yacht, the detailed explanations weaved throughout the story made it easier to grasp the gist of it. I highly recommend this action-packed mystery and look forward to reading more books in the series.
'Just Add Salt' is the second outing for Jinx Schwartz's snarky yacht-owning Texan, the formidable Hetta Coffey. It finds our headstrong heroine in deep water (pun intended) down Mexico way.
Just as in the first book, Ms. Schwartz's prose is a frothy delight, bubbling with humour and humanity. The novel is spiced with danger and topped with a sprinkle of romance. 'Salt' is a book to take with you to the beach or keep on your nightstand or ... well, you get the idea. Just grab a copy, OK?
Books 3 and 4 in the series are already on my Kindle.
After a fun trip in the first series, I thought ‘Just Add Salt’ was missing a little seasoning. While somewhat interesting I felt that the romantic drama of Hetta and Jan was more of the main story rather than what was going on around them. Also when the author did talk about the situation they were in it felt as if they were sitting around and waiting more than having something happen. While it fell short of my expectations I’ll still probably move on another one or two in the series.
This is my second book by Jinx Schwartz and it is very enjoyable. I like the fact the her mysteries kind of sneak up on you. You expect it to be about a woman with bad choices in men, but then it transfers to a ridiculously crazy mystery. With her still raving about her bad choices in men. Very good read.
I like Jinx Schwartz's writing style. Her wit is dry, sassy and always right on. When Hetta Coffey and her friend Jan plan to go to Mexico on their own to do a job no one else wants, trouble follows and chaos ensues.
Hetta and Jan her cohort in trouble really get in a mess this time around! They were supposed to meet up with their boyfriends and go on Hetta's boat for a vacation--they got a job. Hetta asnd Jan were not very happy --Hetta decided to grab a job and taker the boat out on her own (with Jan of course). Neither of the woman really knew how to navigate or even really anything about it--AND in order to take the boat into foreign weater they needed a cvaptain. They found one-or rather he found them--and off they went!
The mishaps along the way will make you laugh as the two women tried to get used to the chavanist they had as a captain! When a blue fin whale decided he was in love with the boat--they managed to get a guy who was a whale specialist on board.
Then some real trouble happens-aside from a major hurricane---and they have to hide the boat. The two guys get taken by the bad guys and Hetta and Jan have to figure out a way out of all this by themselves--not leaving the boat behind!
So who comes to save the day? Their boyfriends are supposedly in Kuwait. AND did the Blue Fin whale ever find one of his own kind and leave Hetta's boat alone. Our lovesick whale does have something to do with saving them too!
I defy you not to laugh out loud at the antics of Hetta and Jan as they head off into the blue Pacific!!
With Just Add Salt, #2 in the Hetta Coffey series, the real adventure begins. Complete with numerous screwups only Hetta can devise. I love the way Jinx weaves in actual history & current events in her tales. in this case a wrecked Spanish galleon from the 1600s & a current very real problem of nefarious people polluting the waters of Baja & endangering the whales. We met Jenks & Jan in book #1 and in this volume we meet several characters who will make appearances across all 14 books in the series. Some end up dead. But only the baddies. The ship captain is a Ricky Ricardo type who vows he will never sail with Hetta again .. but then he does. Once you’re involved with Hetta, there is no escape. You will learn history, japanese culture, mexican cuisine, current events & how to use a panga. And there will be wine. Lots of wine. I always have a glass full when I settle into a Hetta Coffey book.
Fast and fabulous, fun and funny Hetta Coffey and her irrepressible bestie Jan set sail for a wild adventure in Mexico. Due to their inexperience piloting the yacht in open seas, they hire a captain to take them through Mexico with a few stops along the way, while waiting for their fellas.
Somehow madness and mayhem follow in their wake (I love a good boat pun when I can get one!). Crazzzzzy people chase them, they may or may not have a sweet whale attempting to romance their boat, while TWO hurricane are barreling down on them and their fellas have gone missing.
Just found this series and it is a hoot and a half, full of Lucy and Ethel like shenanigans (or Thelma and Louise?) - certainly “ride or die best friends” forever - gotta love the main character and her wild band of misfits.
A truly fun novel, entertaining main character and friends, and absolutely worthwhile read
This book is an excellent fusion of humor, thrill, suspense and adventure. I found it fascinating and charming. It's basically an adventure at sea. But there is one part of the story which remained unsolved and some confusing moments which act as a speed breaker in the fast momentum of the book. In spite of this minor details, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. There is fun, thrill and plenty of adventure that makes it a page Turner. Definitely worth reading. Congratulations to the author for her outstanding efforts.
Read Hetta Coffey and her friend, Jan Sims' exciting journey into the heart of danger and conspiracy.
Fast paced with plenty of humor, and a storyline supported by in depth knowledge of myriad topics closely intertwined to enhance the plot.
Once the boat/yacht and action got underway, protagonist redheaded Hetta and blonde-haired sidekick Jan never let up with their bantering, all the while almost managing to stay out of trouble or purposely getting into it.
All the characters were fun to meet and hang out with, especially Lonesome! Reading this novel is a great way to take a cruise without leaving port.
Just add salt by Schwartz. There are a few pluses and minuses by readers and I had a hard time keeping track of everyone each night that I read. It is a good rollicking story in the likes of pirate ships and a nice bit of tension when escaping Dickless. A hurricane makes for the necessity of finding a safe harbor but not friendly harbor-masters. The descriptive setting has the reader floundering around at various times but always coming out on top.
I find that any book that I read by Jinx a consumerist story teller is full of suspense, with characters that are so real that I am living the story with them. I don't want to put the book down and carry it with even if I get only time to read a page while waiting for a pot to boil. She has traveled widely and lived on a boat in Mexico so her stories have so much authentic information in them. I look forward to getting another to read.
Like old friends to me, Hetta and Jan together again is a fun, exciting read. Astonishing knowledge of boats was really interesting to me, so much I never knew explained in the perfect amount of detail without being boring or condescending. The Only thing I didn't care for was the recapping from book one. Probably wouldn't be annoying if I hadn't read book 2 so soon after the first one. Certainly won't slow me down getting book 3!
I wasn't sure when I started this book that I was going to like it but then in the second chapter it picked up, grabbed my interest and kept it til the very end. I found it well written, the characters realistic and the plot interesting. I look forward to reading more of the series.
Hetta and Jan are having a not so fun time doing a job for a Japanese firm that hired Hetta. The problems start right away with a hurricane, crooked habor patrol, and a Japanese official from the company out for his own good. Follow them with all the interesting trials and a whale in love with their boat.
