While sniffing out clues, Oliver's convincing public--and not so public--displays of affection have Bea swooning in her bustier and fishnets. Between contending with her fake husband's ex-lover Marianna and feeling guilty for hiding the mission from her werewolf crush Will, Bea discovers she's not the only F.R.E.A.K. keeping secrets. When I finished the first book in this series, "Mind Over Monsters", I knew I had found something truly amazing. I wanted to read the next book as soon as possible. Luckily for me it was available for requesting on NetGalley and soon I got it. I was beyond excited to start reading it and two days ago I finally did. And, boy, did I love it!

When I started To Catch A Vampire I was hooked right away again. For some unknown reason I liked Bea better in this book. I definitely liked this one better than Mind Over Monsters, partly because there was way more Oliver in it. It mostly was only him and Bea working on a case, which I loved. It was amazing!

Just like the first book the plot was very well written. I liked the mystery of the case and loved how Bea and Oliver had to go undercover and pretend to be a married couple. It's no secret that I adore Oliver. I mean, he's just so sweet to Bea and I feel like he totally understands her, but on the other hand is also dangerous because he's a vampire.
And also just like in Mind Over Monsters there was a surprise at the end that I once again didn't see coming. When you think it's over and done... Surprise! Something unexpected happens.
There wasn't much of the other characters in this one. Will was on vacation so he only made an appearance at the end but he was still a lot on Bea's mind. Not sure how I feel over that... One character I just hate is Bea's brother. He's so mean to her. I couldn't get that he'd say stuff like that to her. But anyway, I love this world builed up by Jennifer Harlow. I love the F.R.E.A.K.S. a lot. All their different powers are very fun to read about.
There was more romance in this book, which I really liked. Mostly it was between Bea and Oliver. I couldn't help but swoon. I loved their bickering too. So much sexual tension there! Enough gushing about Oliver now...
Another thing I love about these books is the vivid action. I can just see it in my head, playing like a movie. It's truly brilliant.

This book was just amazing, which shows in the fact that I read it in only 2 days! I can't wait for the next one. But I'm afraid I'll have to wait a while. Oh well, it's worth it!
I'm sure everyone who loves anything paranormal will be hooked by this book. The characters are all amazing. There's hot werewolves and vampires. A kickass heroine with awesome powers. Action and suspense where you can't predict what's going to happen or who might die! And some romance. What more do you want?

Maybe it's my current reading slump affecting everything, or maybe because I read the first book YEARS ago, I no longer had the same reading preference ... but I found this to be boring.

I didn't find Bea and Oliver's banter to be amusing; heck, I thought Bea was acting quite bitchy towards Oliver (even if I knew that Oliver was a total flirt). I missed the team-feel. And considering Will showed up at the last minute, I didn't enjoy the love triangle bait. I was feeling detached throughout and pretty much skimmed everything.

I'm not continuing this series, not when I already read reviews (and spoilers) for the series future development. But at least, I fulfill this month's challenge...

The fun I had reading Mind Over Monsters, the debut to this series, was somewhat muted in this sequel, mostly because three-quarters of it follows only two of the characters from the first book--just our first-person narrator Beatrice Alexander, new recruit on the F.R.E.A.K.S. squad, and Oliver the vampire who has the hots for her (remember, he's cooperating with the squad to keep his death sentence suspended). They get an undercover assignment in the Dallas region to sniff out a cabal of seven vampires who've been kidnapping and killing teenagers.

Bea is unhappy about this assignment and shares her negative feelings at considerable length, giving her usual self-deprecating humor a sarcastic, self-pitying tinge. The worst thing, I guess, is that she has to pose as Oliver's slutty human wife among the Dallas vampires, who are not a pleasant bunch. Humans as pets and slaves, you know. It's a rough trip for Bea even before they tangle with the killer cabal, and as the publisher's cover blurb reveals, the Lord of the Dallas vampires seeks revenge on Oliver .

The interactions among the whole squad that I enjoyed so much in the first book are limited to occasional phone calls until at least three-quarters of the way through this book, when most of the others arrive at last for intense action and a double climax that made me a happy reader again. But it wasn't just the rest of the squad, especially its de facto leader Will the werewolf who truly loves Bea (and she has a major crush on him), that made the last quarter of this novel delightful--when the battles begin, Bea shines as a genuine hero.

The detective work and the danger from two groups of vampires keep the suspenseful story going, though slowly at first, and the action sequences that finally erupt are well written (I felt I was right there in each one). The romantic triangle that was just starting up in the first book (Bea wants Will, Oliver wants Bea) becomes a major element thanks to some life-and-death situations--, and the progression of the relationships leaves me uneasy at the end. There is a lot that will need to be worked out in the next book.

I'm very glad I looked past the somewhat odd titles and the kitsch cover art of these books, because they are a lot of fun! To Catch a Vampire has great characters and a fantastic plot, although it's hard to call it a mystery because it's pretty clear from the start who they are after. I enjoyed seeing the deeper interplay between Bea and Oliver that was only hinted at in the first book. I'm still cheering for Will, but I'm enjoying the flirtation with Oliver.

While there's a bit of humor throughout the book it has a bit of serious heart-tugging going on as well. I think Ms. Harlow handles it well, it never feels over-the-top or maudlin, but I found myself honestly feeling for the characters and what happens to them.

While I just don't even know what to say about the covers, I will gladly look forward to future stories in this series, no matter what is on the front. :)

If I would have to choose between vampires vs werewolves, the Team Edward or Team Jacob thingo, I would say Team Jacob all the way but I do like how vampires are characterized every single time. They're just something so cool about them. But in this book, I'm Team Oliver all the way. Will just doesn't have that oof for me. The "oohhh mama." Oliver actually took a bit of getting used to but before the ending of Book 1, he has taken the spot already.

Threesome between three guys. This is exactly my reaction too no matter what situation I am in.

“Wait! Whoa. You two slept together? All three of you? At the same time? How does that even work? Where does everything go? Who—”

After loving the first book, I was a bit disappointed that this book mainly focused on just two members of the team. I had enjoyed the team dynamics and 80% of the book is just two of them. Plus the budding love triangle got worse - I hate those.

They go from their headquarters in Kansas to Texas to look into a group of vampires they think are behind a group of disappearances. Bea and Oliver pose as a married couple as they check out the nightlife scene for their suspects. But Oliver didn't warn Bea that some vampires won't be happy if he shows up there.

TO CATCH A VAMPIRE is pretty much just Beatrice and Oliver working undercover together as a married couple. My only problem with the book? I really loved Will and now I really love Oliver. I have no idea who to root for anymore. I'm not really crazy about the covers for this series but I'm glad I picked up book 1 despite it and book 2 was just as good.

I have really enjoyed getting to know Bea and the rest of the FREAKS. They each have there very own personality to add to the book and they all make it that much more interesting. Bea is still adjusting to her new life but she fits in perfectly with everyone else and is really kicking some ass. It was awesome to see Beatrice and Oliver connect and work so well together. They didn't get along as good in the beginning but as the book progressed you could tell they were growing closer and connecting more. I also liked digging into some of Oliver's past. He is so mysterious and it was nice to get a better picture of him. Bea's brother, wow that is about all I can say about that. I couldn't even imagine being that bitter towards someone, especially that I'm related to. Like book 1 there is plenty of action and suspense throughout TO CATCH A VAMPIRE.

This has been a rather enjoyable series. The characters are likable the plot is engaging and the world is easy to fall into.

I'm not sure. It feels a little Sookie Stackhouse except without the *hot* scenes plus a little Nancy Drew added in. What I really don't like is the insta love. How is it that Bea can be a normal everyday girl and then all of a sudden two of the most amazing male specimans are inexplicably head over heels deeply in love with her, would do anything for her, would give up their life for her. Huh? Why? What is so special about her? And why now? Why didn't anyone prior to this love her like that?

I'm going to soldier on like a good little book series addict should and hope that there will eventually be a believable explanation for it like there was with Sookie.

Except for this minor issue I have, it's still an easy entertaining read ... though this storyline/mystery/case was not as good as the first book, which was too bad. Definitely an escapism book; I do not feel challenged or smarter having read it. But those types of books fulfill a need, too; I guess not everything needs to be War and Peace.

2nd novel in the F.R.E.A.K.S Squad [Federal Response to Extra-Sensory and kindred supernaturals - the paranormal branch of the F.B.I] series. Will the werewolf is off on vacation communing with his inner beast. This leaves vampire Oliver to make his movies on Bea - They go off on a solo mission to investigate a nest (coven) of vampires who have been killing indiscriminately. This leads Oliver to confront a couple of vampire exes who both hold grudges over the past....

I much preferred this one to Mind over Monsters, largely due to the vampire story which ticks all my boxes and the fact that there is lots of Oliver. I really can't understand Bea's dilemma or why she seems to favour Will. I mean Oliver's better looking, more thoughtful, devoted, immortal and badass and Will's just grumpy and bossy. But hey.

Other than the tedious love triangle aspect this one's great and will delight fans of things like Anita Blake and True Blood. Fast paced, kick ass heroine urban fantasy with lots of vampire action.

I picked this up at random at a book sale, and thought it sounded interesting. I was right. It's a fun book. The description of North Texas in the summer is spot on. A few details are incorrect, like there is no YMCA in Grapevine. The local deputy telling them that "the basement is a good catch" was notable in that it is very true, basements are rare and wonderful things around here.
Some nice banter, some a little silly. I haven't read the first one, but there is enough background provided without being too much.
Part of the trouble they get into is because Oliver doesn't provide some necessary information about his past dealings with the Lord of Dallas, and doesn't brief Beatrice very well on vampire rules an etiquette.
The ending is quite moving.

Another fairly good read. This one has a much darker theme, venturing into bondage, BDSM and other dark and nefarious 'pastimes'. The crisp and witty dialogue helps to balance some of this darkness.

The complicated relationship between Bea, Will and Oliver is a trifle overdone, which spoils the narrative a wee bit. Nevertheless, I stole some work time to finish the story.

Thoroughly enjoyable book 2 in the F.R.E.A.K.S.' series. This book has a lot of action and a fast moving story pace. I appreciate the strong female lead, and enjoy the humor in the book as well. I'm looking forward to reading book 3 in the series.

Favorite Quote: “You are a stalking, creepy pervert who needs a hobby.“

Beatrice Alexander is now an official member of The F.R.E.A.K. Squad -Federal Response to Extra-Sensory and Kindred Supernaturals. A top secret branch of the FBI who hunt the supernatural monsters of society. Taken into the group after she almost killed her brother, Bea has learned to control her gift and finally finds acceptance among others like herself.

Her second case requires her to get up close and personal with her very own resident stalker, the vampire, Oliver. They are headed to Dallas to investigate a series of disappearances involving a band of rogue vampires. Their cover? Oliver and Bea will pose as husband and wife. As Oliver’s attempts to make this a marriage with all the benefits and leaves Bea feeling a little heated in her bustier, an old enemy of Oliver’s will come calling and leave Bea with an important decision to make.

Jennifer Harlow’s second installment in her F.R.E.A.K.S. series continues with her hilarious characters and devilish antics. A ghoulish urban fantasy; ripe with mystery and dramatics, is a clever mix of humor and horror. This installment’s storyline revolves almost exclusively around Bea and Oliver. We get an intimate front row seat as Bea tries very hard to deal with her her conflicted feelings for Oliver and Will. Our heroine Bea is an interesting mixture of bravado and and self deprecation. While she fears her gifts and is not comfortable with all aspects of her job, she is more then willing to rise to the line to protect those in need. Her inner monologue is filled with delish snark as she laments over her weight, her love life, and the insane people she works with.

“One after the other, these impossibly beautiful creatures paid homage to us. And with over a thousand years between them, what did they talk about? The Black Death? The sixties? No, fashion and celebrities. I was surprised Oliver knew so much about The Real Housewives."

Bea is still caught between broody werewolf detective Will and Lothario vampire Oliver. Each has something to offer her, but Bea isn’t sure if either are serious about her. Will is a very sexy detective who was bitten and turned into a werewolf when he and his wife were attacked. His wife died, while he survived the transformation. He blames himself for her death and has decided that strict control is the only way for him to keep everyone safe. His control always seems to be slip when it comes to Bea and she realizes that in his need to protect, he underestimates her at every turn.

Oliver is the team’s resident Lothario and vampire. Gorgeous, seductive and full of himself. He tried to seduce Bea when they first met but her unique gifts allow her a certain immunity to Oliver’s seductive powers. Bea and Oliver has become good friends since their last mission, getting to know one another and Bea is convinced of one thing. No matter what happens, Oliver will always be there for her. While the romance was very low key in the first installment, Harlow ups the sexual tension and chemistry to ELECTRIC in this installment as Oliver and Bea spend time alone together on their mission and certain feelings are acknowledged.

“I’d imagined this, those lips on me. I run my fingers through his soft hair, tugging it to bring his lips in tighter. His mouth moves to the other side with more soft kisses.“

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Oliver MORE than proved he is the man for Bea. We shall see though.

The main conflict is an intense, well plotted mystery/suspense and is used to mature Bea and develop her into the dangerous person we all know she can be. I enjoyed that she is able to work more independently, having to rely on her own skills to help Oliver solve the case. Will is not hovering, providing a safety net, and it is the best thing that could have happened to Bea. The rest of the team is not seen as much since as I stated earlier, this story revolves around Oliver and Bea’s mission. We see them enter towards the end and Harlow surprises me with the path she chooses to follow regarding some of them. Very climatic.

Smooth writing and fast pacing will have you racing to the end to see how Bea handles herself on her second mission with the FREAK squad. To Catch A Vampire is a wonderful addition to to the series and Ms. Harlows F.R.E.A.K. series is a must have for those readers who enjoy a well blended mixture of humor and horror in their urban fantasy. look forward to seeing what Ms. Harlow has in store for Bea and us next.

I didn't read the first book in this series, but when I got the email for this blog tour and read the synopsis, it sounded really interesting, I didn't care that I didn't read the first book (although I will read it eventually), I just wanted to read this. After reading the book, I was lucky, because it wasn't confusing, there are a few things that I don't understand, but I will talk about them soon. Despite not reading the first book, it was still easy to understand the world in this series.

Beatrice Alexander is a telekinetic special agent who works and lives with a group called F.R.E.A.K.S. She gets sent on a special assignment with her vampire co-worker Oliver Montrose. They go undercover as a married couple to infiltrate in Dallas in order to investigate a bunch of human disappearances.

When I started reading To Catch A Vampire I was hooked right away, I didn't want to stop, I wanted to keep going. This book is mostly Oliver and Bea working on a case together. I loved their bickering, it's so funny.

The plot was written well, the mystery of the case wasn't boring and predictable, it was interesting, I liked it, especially the few things that were revealed near the end about Oliver, I wasn't expecting that at all, it surprised me as much as it surprised Bea. Even though there weren't many pages left of the book and you think it's over, well, think again because its not over yet, something unexpected happens.

The cover makes the book look like a fluffy read but it's not, it's serious and some scary things happen in this book. Once you read it, you will have an opposite reaction from when you just saw the book cover, Jennifer is not afraid to include some serious stuff in this book. Which is why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, it's kind of like with the Anna and the French Kiss cover.

The others from the group don't show up in here a lot, but they do show up a little bit and also have a few phone conversations with Bea while she's on the mission.
Will was on vacation through most of the book, but he made an appearance near the end of the book. The others, like Irie, agent Wolfe, Nancy, etc, are at the mansion and don't shop up until near the end as well. I love everyone on the team, they sound like fun people to be with. I also love their powers too, every member is so different from one another, yet they're like family. I hate Bea's brother, he's so mean, he acts like it's her fault that she has powers and is different, but of course it's not, what a jerk.

On top of that, I really love the action. I'm pretty sure everyone knows by now that I love books, movies, and tv shows with action in them, so of course I would love this. My two most favourite things in books, movies, and tv shows are: humour and action, I just love those in most cases.

The only problem I had with this book is that when some of teenagers spoke, like Nancy, they talked like 12 year olds, teenagers don't talk like that, for ex on page 20:
"I'm not, like, totally, brain dead...."
...
"And why did Oliver leave me a note asking me to let you, like, borrow my clothes?"

I graduated high school in 2011, I didn't talk like that and I don't think anyone else there did either. Other than that, I loved everything else.

Overall, I loved this book, it was a good read. This book was a sweet, a little romance, is action packed, has good writing, suspenseful, it's got a werewolf, vampires, awesome characters, a kickass heroine, and is an enjoyable read.

I look forward to reading the third book when it releases. I can't wait to see what happens next and what happens to the characters. Although it'll probably be a long wait like with many series. I'm still waiting for book 2 in The Lunar Chronicles series, I read Cinder in March, and I still have about five months to wait. I like what's going on with the Lux series, the second book just came out in August and third book will release in December, so not as much waiting as with many other series out there.
Sorry about getting a little off topic.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Fun, quirky yet serious mystery novel.

Opening Sentence: I think I just officially realized that I’m a true-blue freak.

The Review:

To Catch a Vampire finds Beatrice Alexander (telekinetic extraordinaire) bemoaning her place in F.R.E.A.K.S. It is not that she doesn’t like it, in fact she loves it, it is just the fact that she can’t tell her family and friends what she does for a living. She is also moping because her current crush, Will the werewolf, is on vacation but she really wants him to enjoy his time off, so when an opportunity to work a case on disappearing humans comes up, she eagerly takes the job without telling Will. Of course, said job will leave Beatrice working alone alongside the irresistible yet irritating vampire Oliver.

Beatrice is basically on a solo mission. The other members of the F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad take a backseat in this novel. During the mission, Oliver leaves her to do all the research and interviews while he tries to deal with the vampire politics. The vampires in this world are definitely a strange group and Beatrice learns more than she ever wanted when she is dragged into a situation from Oliver’s past.

Beatrice, Will and Oliver’s love (or lust) triangle continues to grow and get more complicated. Beatrice is really conflicted with her thoughts and actions towards Will and Oliver. Beatrice is still the funny and quirky chick that she was in the first novel Mind Over Monsters. Since she is still relatively new to the team Bea is still finding her way so this mission is her way of proving herself to the team.

To Catch a Vampire is very much a funny and campy novel but there is a layer of seriousness to the events that happen. Once again told from the point of view of the odd Beatrice, I enjoyed her voice but not as much as I did in the first novel. The ruthlessness of the vampire world and Bea and Oliver’s relationship makes this novel an amusing read. This novel starts off as mystery and moves like a mystery novel until the second half where the action really kicks in and moves this novel along at a good pace.

Overall, To Catch a Vampire is a fun and enjoyable novel. My only complaint is where Beatrice’s relationships were left off at the end. I would like to see more of the F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad and Bette the machete in the future if there is a sequel. Jennifer Harlow’s next book What’s a Witch to Do? is set in the same world but does not continue Bea’s storyline.

Notable Scene:

I don’t see the men move until they’ve reached their destinations. When vamps move, they move fast. Faster than the human eye can process. I feel the breeze of quick movement, but nothing else until the moment someone grabs me. I don’t have the time to react. A preternaturally strong arm wraps around my chest the moment they disappear. Oliver reappears a few feet from me, punching J.R. square in the jaw, the crack curling my toes. J.R. smashes to the ground. That’s when it registers that someone’s got me in a bear hug. If that’s not bad enough, cold steel presses against my temple. Oh, I really hope that’s not what I think it is.

“Hey!” Gerry says.

Before Oliver manages another punch, his eyes dart to us. His cocked fist lowers. He snarls, pointed fangs in full view. “Put it down.”

Oh, crud. It is what I think it is. I’ve only ever had a gun pointed at me once, and it wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience. It resulted in me having to kill the man holding the gun. I had nightmares for weeks. “Leave him alone or I splatter your skank’s brains out,” Gerry says.

Oh, no. I think the last few days’ events have finally caught up with me. My body begins shaking like a jonesing heroin addict, and my knees just about give out. A whimper escapes my mouth, then another.

Oliver looks from the giant holding me to meet my eyes. He looks damn near scared as I am. “Trixie, darling, calm down. Everything will be alright, my darling. I promise. I swear it to you. I will never let them harm you. We can handle this. You can handle this. Do you trust me?”

FTC Advisory: Midnight Ink Books provided me with a copy of To Catch a Vampire. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Beatrice has been working for F.R.E.A.K.S. for a few months and she’s enjoying learning investigation from her fellow agents…ok, she likes spending time with hot, sexy Team Leader/werewolf Will Price. But Will is on vacation spending time with the some werewolf alphas doing who know what: marking trees, killing deer…hmmm, let’s not think to much about that. Bea misses him and although he calls her to get updates, it’s just not the same.

When the boss, Dr. George Black, calls her into his office to tell her she’s being sent on a special assignment…just her and the annoyingly flirty, vampire pain-in-the-butt Oliver Montrose, Bea isn’t too certain she is ready for undercover work, especially being alone with Oliver. She is really starting to wonder when she is told they are going undercover as husband and wife and the bustier and fishnet stockings which make her look like an Elvira reject are part of her disguise. Not only is the hotel one that caters exclusively to vampires and their friends, and which is run by a gorgeous (of course) vampire Marianna, an old friend of Oliver’s, but she’s getting really suspicious of his motives and his need for Beatrice to be the one to accompany him when she sees the four poster bed they will have to share.

She agrees to stay on the mission because she wants to help find out if there really is a vampire cabal who are responsible for all the missing people, and put a stop to them. At least she thought the cabal was her biggest concern until she finds out Will knows she’s missing from the mansion and she’ll soon have to face an angry, jealous werewolf who thinks she snuck off for a vampire tryst with her co-worker. She’s just not sure who’s fangs she needs to be more concerned about: Marianna, the cabal, Oliver or Will’s.

And just when they think the danger is past, the local Lord is holding a centuries old grudge against Oliver and thinks Beatrice is the perfect lure for his trap.

THOUGHTS:
These characters are so much fun. I love the fact that every time Beatrice calls the mansion with an update on the case, the others are saying odd things like “do us all a favor and be careful.” We find out this because Will has found out Beatrice was on a mission with Oliver and no one will tell him where they are and he is furious. He gives a dozen excuses for why he’s unhappy, but you know it boils down to jealousy since Will and Oliver don’t get along and both want Beatrice.

This is also the mission where Oliver and Beatrice eventually bond and Oliver goes from being an annoyance to Beatrice to their being best friends (which also annoys the hell out of Will).

It also shows that although Oliver is sexy and flirty with Beatrice, Beatrice does finally get a look at true vampire nature which is cold and brutal although Beatrice does hold her own.

UPDATE: I have realized there are issues with werewolves in this series. Will is dangerous, a mindless monster in his werewolf form, but he goes to meet with a pack and the pack alphas to learn what? to control himself? Can he? Shouldn't Will, as an FBI agent, have learned to control himself before he was given the leadership of the F.R.E.A.K. team? Is the pack a pack of mindless killers? How does that work, do they all need to be locked in silver cages or do they reek havoc in Maryland once a month, slaughtering the town? Is it only Will that can't control himself or is this simply a flaw in the plot?

After a disappointing trip to see her brother, Beatrice is told by Oliver (the lusty vampire) that they have been assigned a mission together. They are to move into the vampire scene, under cover, in Dallas, and find a group of vampires who have been killing people. She isn’t that happy with Oliver, and assumed it is another way to get her alone and make a pass at her. Meanwhile her werewolf crush, Will, is still on vacation.

This is the second novel in A F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad Investigation series. It is best to start from the first book, Mind Over Monsters. It is based around Beatrice, a school teacher with the ability to move objects with her mind. She joins F.R.E.A.K.S. in the first novel. She is also quickly thrust into a romantic triangle with a vampire, Oliver, and werewolf, Will. So far the first two books have been quick, banter heavy, and fun.

Beatrice isn’t different than a lot of heroines lately. She is sassy, concerned with her weight, and has a problem with self-esteem. I noticed in this novel that she is also closed minded, something I don’t know if I like in her. Anyway, she is sent on a mission with Oliver, the lusty vampire. They go undercover as a couple. Beatrice has issues with it, only because of her attraction for Oliver. What she denies, and her dislike for other women bothers me. I had to wait a couple days to write this up so I could figure out how I felt about it.

One of my favorite things about this series has been, when there is action it turns into a page flipping fiesta. At first finding this group of vampires didn’t feel that important. I was just in it to see Beatrice react to Oliver, but even that grew a little old. Most likely because she put on the, ‘I want him, but I am not going to touch him because he is not the good guy. I really have a true crush on Will, the werewolf. Plus I don’t do things like that.’ Cue my many eye-rolls. Then there is the actual case. It was hard to care about the dead people, and compared to Beatrice, Oliver, for all his claimed determination seemed a little lazy when getting down to business. After that’s all done the real action starts, centering on Oliver. Once it rains it pours. The last half of the book had tons of action that kept me reading. I think I actually read the full novel in two separate sittings. It’s an easy one to pick up and let hours slide by.

In comparison to the first book, I think it’s about the same. If you are thinking, ‘I have heard of/read things that sound similar,’ then you are dead on. The themes and plots are not anything brand new to the genre. In fact it pulls from hundreds of different things, not just the werewolf, vampire romantic triangle. To Catch a Vampire is a fun way to spend a lazy afternoon. The action, and ending felt worth it, despite my hesitation with Beatrice.

Review will also be posted on my blog for blog tour stop on September 18t.

This book was a fun read. It was more of a comedic take on vampires and that's what I liked about it. We meet Bea who is still adusting to life working with the Freaks. She is also having to deal with the constant advances of her partner Oliver. Oliver is such a cute vampire and so swoon worthy if you are into the type of thing. He is fearlessly protective of Bea too eventhough she can hold her own. I liked that she wasn't just a helpless heroine and could take care of herself. I also loved her cool abilities even though it made her have to alienate herself from her family. I liked that Bea was so fiesty and easy going too. She could hold her own with the best of them.

Bea and Oliver are sent on a mission down to Dallas and have to pretend to be a couple. This is so easy for Oliver but torture for Bea until she learns she may just have feelings for Oliver after all. I loved the love hate relationship they had with each other. It just made their undeniable chemistry just that more real. It was so cute to watch Bea fight her feelings for Oliver and try to keep him at bay. I have to say that it was so comical when I got the mental images of Bea parading around in the getups she wore. I liked seeing Bea's inner turmoil because of the fact that she also liked Will. Will was a werewolf that all worked with the team and such a nice character to. I have to say I don't see him being as good for Bea as Oliver was for her though. Oliver and her just meshed so well together.

Bea and Oliver get deeper undercover and learn some truly unsettling things. They have to learn how to really work with each other and take care of business. I loved that Bea actually helped Oliver out of some situations and showed him that even he needed help sometimes. I have to read more of this series to see how things will play out between them and who Bea will end up with. Overall this book was a cute and light hearted read. It is a great book for someone wanting to get more into vampire reads but not wanting all the gore that comes with some of them. If you want a kick butt heroine this book has that too. The author did a great job of creating her characters and having Dallas the backdrop for the story was a wise choice. It gave the author so much material to work with to make some awesome world building. I highly recommend this book to others and you will love it.

Thanks to Midnight Ink and Netgalley for allowing me to review this one and Bewitching Tours for this awesomesauce blog tour.

Quick & Dirty: Fun, quirky yet serious mystery novel.

I had the great pleasure of reviewing Jennifer’s debut novel last year and I loved the fresh idea. And while it was gory in parts, they were hunting down zombies after all, it was a pretty clean read. In fact, shortly after I read it, my, at the time pre-teen, nephew took the book read it and immediately wanted book two. However, with this book 2, Jennifer definitely goes more adult with some of the topics dealt with and I have to tell my nephew that at 13, he’s just a little too young for this book. And that saddened me. I wish that the books hadn’t gone in this direction.

From what the blurb tells the reader, this book is set in the world of vampires as Beatrice and Oliver team up to investigate a series of unexplained murders in Dallas. In book one, there was some sexual tension between Bea and Oliver, but she had stronger feelings for Will. In this book, the sexual tension is ratcheted up a lot and now there’s a love triangle. Due to the goth scene and vampire world that these two are infiltrating, there is a lot of sex mentioned. And here’s a minor spoiler… there’s even a memory scene of a murder victim and her friends being kidnapped and rape. Spoiler over. For me, while as an adult and reader of erotica and romance, this doesn’t phase me. But as someone going into reading this book and expecting another fun, clean paranormal mystery… well, I didn’t get it. And have to say that this is definitely a read for those over the age of 16 (at least).

Don’t get me wrong. I liked the book. The mystery itself was pretty solid. Granted it was “solved” pretty fast, but then Bea and Oliver as well as their other FREAKS had to clean up afterwards. I could have used more mystery and suspense, to fit my tastes.

I did however, like the growth seen in Bea. In book 1, she was unsure of herself and her powers and then thrown into a completely foreign paranormal world. In book 2, she’s a little more confident, but with great room for more growth. She also has two hot men vying for her attentions, which is unfamiliar territory and I found it entertaining to watch as she deals with her feelings while still trying to remain professional and solve the mystery at hand.

All in all, it was a solid book but I went into it expecting something different than I got. This book is in some ways darker than the first. But it’s able to stand on it’s own, but as with most series, it makes more sense when read in order.

Full Review at Foil the Plot

When I read Harlow’s debut, Mind Over Monsters, I was completely blown away. Suffice it to say, it was a no brainer that I’d be back for round #2. I read To Catch A Vampire almost immediately after I finished the first and devoured it just as quickly. Harlow’s definitely found her niche and set herself apart in the urban fantasy genre with a pairing of clever humour and devilish antics. I feel like she’s really nailed Bea’s voice this time around and grown more confident in her storytelling. These books sort of remind me of the Sookie Stackhouse series only with a more likeable protagonist and a stronger story. Now we don’t see much of the other F.R.E.A.K. Squad members in this installment but it doesn’t detract from the story because Harlow amps up the tension to beyond electric.

Though Harlow initially hinted at a love connection between Will and Bea in book #1 she quickly throws us off by pairing our protagonist with the vamp in this installment. And yes, while initially I was a huge WillBea fan, I’m all about OliBea now. Wow, I’m really no good with these names, am I? You guys, this story sizzles which is to say the chemistry between Bea and Oliver is beyond hot. The tension that drives both Bea and Oliver’s relationship is stimulating and catapulted Oliver from abhorrent status to god-like in my book. Will’s a nice guy but he’s also overprotective and always underestimating our Bea. Gere we’re given a deeper introspective into Oliver and his past and we quickly learn that below the suave exterior lies someone who is sweet and totally supportive. By the end, he becomes her dark angel (and mine).

I can’t say enough how much I love these characters, especially Bea. She struggles with the burdens of her gift and her job along with her weight and all the other things that a normal woman does. She feels so real, only much more funny—like the BFF you’ve always wanted! To Catch A Vampire is mostly about the dynamic relationship with Bea and Oliver but there’s no shortage of twists and turns especially when concerning the ending. Seriously, this series just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see what new ride Harlow has in store for us for book #3!

Again, I have to echo my earlier review of the first book that the cover art does not do them justice. The books are more fun than that. Beatrice Alexander, the teacher turned special (supernatural) agent returns with her F.R.E.A.K. squad team of assorted misfits and monsters for another case. Like the first book in the series (Mind Over Monsters) the reader is treated to some actual police procedural elements along with the supernatural bits and it's not a bad combo. The second book takes a darker turn, with the deeply disturbing nature of the crimes as well as some revelations about Beatrice----and Oliver. Overall, this is a very good thing. Even though most of the squad is M.I.A. for most of the book while Beatrice goes on her vampy undercover assignment with Oliver, the payoff for the reader was getting to know these characters that much better. It also went a long way in cementing the growing love/sexual tension triangle in the series much more plausibly. Some shocking developments in this book also show that Harlow is not overly fussy about throwing even her major characters into real risk---even to the point of...well, I won't spoil it. Needless to say, if you want a fun, fast read Harlow remains a good bet. There is still a lot of momentum and surprises and I'm looking forward to reading the next installment. My only hope going forward in the series is that with some of the new dramatic developments that the humor doesn't end up gettting too lost along the way. Too much out there in supernatural fiction takes itself too seriously, and it's kind of refreshing to have a series where it feels like the characters have a sense of humor and aren't always about being tortured all the time.

2-1/2

I received this book through Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book got off to a rather slow start. But in full confession mode, I had not read the first book in the series, so I do not know if that would have made a difference in the pacing if I had.

I have been reading a lot of young adult and dystopian fiction lately, so this was very definitely in a different category altogether. I think it is more a paranormal romance, with some more mature themes than young adult.

I rather disliked Oliver in the beginning, but toward the end he kind of grew on me a bit. Though, he does remind me of Eric from True Blood quite a bit.

Here's the thing, though. I usually try to ignore editing when it is an ARC I am reading. With this one, though, it was really, really difficult. Some of the lack of editing was extremely distracting. The flow of the narrative was a bit awkward. It read more like a novel outline, and felt like there were chunks missing.

There were a lot of similarities to True Blood. This could have worked in the book's favor but I just didn't feel like It was done well enough. The whole lord and lady thing was awful similar to the King and Queen thing in True Blood.

It really just felt like it took a long time to get to the meat of the story, and then when you finally get into it, toward the last 15% or so of the book, the action felt extremely rushed.

The book had a lot of potential but it just felt like it fell short of that for me.

I will very likely read the rest of the series in the hopes that it improves. I really wanted to love it, but it was just okay for me.

I accidentally came across this book while at my library and remembered that I'd enjoyed the first book in the series ... then promptly forgot about it! So I picked book #2 up and saved it for when I needed a semi-humorous story. Today was that day, and I basically stayed home all day to read it (don't you hate it when there is no good stopping point?). Yay! It was fun but with the right amount of suspense and action and seriousness.

Beatrice (Bea and Trixie to her friends) has a, er, Gift she was born with the has caused her separation from her chicken-shit (my words, not hers - her grannie charges her a nickle for every curse word so she really tries not to) family. In the first book, Bea is conscripted to work with an off-shoot of the FBI called the F.R.E.A.K. squad (don't ask) and goes to live in a mansion in the middle of nowhere, Ohio where she has begun training. She has two co-workers that bear mentioning: Oliver, a model-perfect 500 yr old vampire and Will, a hot werewolf who has a terrible reaction when near her and which is screwing up their romance.

While Will is off cavorting with other wolves on his first vaca in years, Bea and Oliver get the nod to head to Dallas to gather info on a cabal of vamps who are perhaps responsible for half a dozen missing persons. What ensues has made me laugh out loud and almost cry in the end. This is a story about what a true friend will do for you and about not screwing over a vamp Lord who ends up in charge of Dallas. A great read and great writing too.
