Trace O'Hurley had turned his back on responsibility and commitment long ago. Now he lived the way he wanted, did what he wanted when he wanted. But that was all going to change.
Gillian Fitzpatrick had responsibilities, commitments; her brother had disappeared and she was frightened and desperate. Trace was her only hope. He had the connections, the expertise, and the guts. But just what was she going to have to do to convince him to help her?

Translation widget on The blog!!!
I really liked this story. The ending was a little bit rushed but over all, there was good pacing and an interesting plot line. I also REALLY enjoyed taking a look at Trace O'Hurley. None of the other books really had very much about him because none of his family knew much about him. This was a great conclusion to the series, pulling everyone together. I recommend reading Waiting for Nick from the Stanislaski series after reading this series. Nora Roberts is brilliant and connects to this series with that one, really delving in and deepening the connections in her world. Anyway, there is sort of an epilogue of this series in that book, looking at the family as a whole a few years down the road. Back to this book, I really liked what we learned about Flynn and would like to see more of him at some point, even though I kind of doubt that it will ever happen. Definitely at least 5 stars, if not more.
Gillian Fitzpatrick is a physicist who's father and brother have been working on an antidote to nuclear exposure. When her brother and niece are kidnapped in Ireland, she searches out Trace O'Hurley, an American working for the ISS. He's planning on quitting but takes on this last assignment.
Trace O'Hurley left his family behind many years ago but he still feels the bonds. Even so, when Gillian Fitzpatrick comes to him, asking for help to save her brother, he hesitates. He's mourning the death of his friend and doesn't really want to hop back into the spy world. But Gillian has the solution to an interesting scientific problem in her head and there are men who would like to extract it. So Trace takes on her case.
The missing brother's story and it was kind of meh. He's in espionage and burnt out, the h needs his help to find her kidnapper bro & niece, reluctantly he agrees. Honestly, I didn't get into it much since it seemed I have read a story like this a million times before. I did like the family reunion at Chantel's wedding & the father & son mending their fences.
I must admit, the only reason I started listening to this book was because I had no other choice. I was driving to Nashville and forgot to load anything decent on my phone. I'm not a fan of Roberts' earlier stuff, especially Harlequin. It was cheesy and oversimplified and downright pathetic. But I finished it just to add another book to my 2011 goal. So there's that... if you like Harlequin, you might like this. But if you're a fan of Roberts' yearly hardbacks and her "In Death" series, don't expect much.
this is a really good book to the end the series with. it felt right, because Trace is the very secretive sibling and i thought his story was perfect to close off the series, also a kinf of closure for himself as well. and the fun thing about this book is how we got a glimpse at all the members of the family. my favorite part of the book was definitely the proposal. it was awkward but so romantic at the same time.
Gillian Fitzpatrick's brother and niece have been kidnapped by a terrorist outfit, who want to get their hands on a serum her brother created that can inoculate people against a worldwide nuclear meltdown. She is recommended to hire mercenary Trace O'Hurley. He's ready to retire, but takes on the job because of the money. Of course, he finds Gillian hot, so that might have something to do with it! He then organises meetings with various people while Gillian demands that he tell her everything and bring her along.
This was all a bit ridiculous and Gillian should have driven me crazy with her too-stupid-to-live behaviour, but I enjoyed it. Although it looks as if it was originally published for the Silhouette Special Edition line, this feels more like a Harlequin Intrigue, because of the suspense element. It's mostly Trace brokering a bunch of ammunition deals to get closer to the terrorist leader and Gillian insisting on being involved (in between throwing herself at him), but it's an easy read, and Trace and Gillian have interesting backstories. Most importantly, their conversations matter. They don't just chat about food or what happened in the other books (Trace's triplet sisters all had books before this one.) Indeed, there's a conversation that addresses the ethics of a nuclear fallout vaccination - how would they decide who gets one? Those little moments of depth (well, more than a typical category romance book) give this some extra oomph.
I recently read one of Nora Roberts' latest books, and it was awful, but I certainly might check out other earlier stuff by her if this is anything to go by.
The agent/bond storylines are not my favourite so this took me a while to really get into it. Once the characters developed it was better and quite a quick, easy read. I’ve not read the other O’Hurley stories and I may have put myself off, starting at the end!
Meh. I was underwhelmed with this book. And I freaking LOVE Nora Roberts. I didn’t really like or dislike any of the characters. The story line was meh. Not my favorite NR book at all. I still love you though, Nora!!!
Each summer starting a few years back, I decided to read a few romances, and Nora Roberts tends to grab my attention. She's smart, her characters are rounded and interesting and both the settings and the jobs characters hold seem interesting and believeable. In this case, it shows it's an early story, but I can see some glimpse of the later Roberts. When I started this one, I wasn't aware it was the fourth in a series, so I read it as a stand alone and it does read like that until the very end when you find the family and see all the results of other novels. But it still, holds its ground. It's not a memorable read, but it can be read. It keeps your interest and the characters are a good fit for each other. The story is a bit out of hand, but that's the ground for Roberts to write even more out of the box stories that have catapulted her to the ceiling of the great romance writers.
Trace O'Hurley escaped his family's expectations years ago by running away and by a chance of fate, getting involved in special intelligence work. Now his mentor is dead and he's burnt out, yet can't resist doing one last job to help doctor Gillian Fitzpatrick find her abducted brother and niece.
He is reluctant and jaded, but his need for revenge can't be denied and leads him and the courageous doctor in a journey that changes both their lives forever and eventually brings him what he was always looking for, a home.
Different from the rest of his family, his story is different as well, with more suspense elements, but no less enjoyable. I will miss the colorful O'Hurleys!
For some reason I have not found the two O'Hurley books I have read that enthralling. I could not somehow sympathise with the characters. Trace the brother and main character in this edition was just too hard and disinteresting initially and later completely changed his persona
“I love you, Trace, with all my heart, and I want nothing more than to spend my life with you. It doesn't matter where.” - Gillian Fitzpatrick
What happens when a seasoned yet cynical intelligence agent is forced to work with an idealistic scientist?
Dr. Gillian Fitzpatrick is in a pickle. Her brother and niece have been abducted by a terrorist group that is after a weapon she and her brother designed. She can't free them herself - she's gonna need the help of Trace O'Hurley, a man whose morals are ambiguous at best, and whose interest is not entirely on this mission. Can these two completely different people work together to stop the terrorists and free the hostages in time?
Honestly, I don't remember who joked about Trace being a spy in the previous books, but damn! Right on the money, huh?
Though, this is obviously not a spy story - it's not even a love story, to be honest. This book was a chemical reaction! Slow-building and volatile! The action and suspense? Top of the top. The tension between Gillian and Trace? Over the roof. The dialogues and the love scenes? Every bit the masterpieces Nora Roberts is familiar with writing.
Not gonna lie, I had high expectations for Trace - and he didn't disappoint. He was gruff but in that sexy way, and there was still enough softness inside him to keep him humane in the grumpiest way - I was all for it.
Gillian was also a delight. Smart and spunky, a woman who would sacrifice herself for her loved ones and what's right. She was way too pure for some of the stuff the world might throw at someone in her shoes, but Trace's cynicism was there to balance things nicely, in my opinion.
And with this, the O'Hurley series is over for me. I loved it from start to finish, and it was something I needed to get back on my "NR feel good" mood.
"I love you, Gillian, and I've waited a hell of a long time to make a home." - Trace O’Hurley
OMG - romance novel 101 - how does a piano player become a infamous spy?? and then falls in love with the person who contracts him to find her brother....then she goes as a spy too???? The only twist was at the very very end when she gets him to go home for his sister's wedding and he meets the groom...SURPRISE....they worked uncover together 10 years ago.....thats all you know.
Alot of quotes hit home, what my family is experience now - realtime.
"....I know you've been unhappy she said quietly and that you've bottled things up. I should have done something about it." "none of it's your fault" "Mine as much as his."
"no, its not good enough, because I don't want to walk through your doors. I want something else, I want something more, but you're so wrapped up in your own hopeless dream you can't see that I hate it. And that the more you push me to follow your dream instead of my own, the closer I come to hating you."
"...Strange, isn't it, how our parents seem to map out our routes even before we're born"
"If you're tired, if you're dissatisfied, it may be because you're more of a dreamer than you'll admit. You can't change the world - none of us can - only little pieces of it"

The last installment in the O'Hurleys series has a completely different feel than the rest of the books. Trace O'Hurley is a tough secret agent, so the story doesn't really fit with the romantic tone set in the previous books. This book is not a romance novel, but a mystery/suspense one. Nonetheless, it's very tense, and there is a romance as well. Nora Roberts manages to pull it off, but I can't help but wonder if this book needed more fleshing out to fit better in the rest of the lovely series. I can see Trace's character distant from his family while working plenty of other jobs.
What bothered me even more is that it's hard to believe that Frank O'Hurley was such a wonderful, thoughtful, and considerate father to his triplet daughters, but such a stick in the mud when it came to Trace. Their conflict felt forced as a result.
This is the final book in the O'Hurley series and it's perfect that it's Trace's story. We've heard so much about this elusive older brother, but this is the first time that we're actually meeting him as an adult! Weirdly, this is the story I forget about the most in the series, but it doesn't mean I love it any less, it's just a very different story than the first three.
Trace is on a clandestine mission and it's here that he meets and falls in love with Gillian. My favourite part of this book is ALWAYS the last few chapters when he finally meets his family again. I won't give away what happens between him and each family member, but his reunion is perfect on so many levels.
I bought this book at a book sale and didn't realize it was the last book of a series. After reading many of Nora Roberts's books, I know that reading one book out of place in a series doesn't necessarily ruin your enjoyment of the rest of the series. I hope that's true.
I really enjoyed reading "Without a Trace" concerning Trace O'Hurley and Gillian Fitzpatrick. The story flowed well even though Gillian wasn't making life very easy on Trace. Trace is a spy and Gillian is trying to find her kidnaped brother and niece. Trace knows exactly what he is doing and has the added job of keeping Gillian out of the way and safe--hard to do with such a hardheaded woman who is anxious for a good outcome. It definitely kept my attention.
Mystery and romance are Nora Roberts specialty and she doesn't let you down in this novel. Trace O'Hurley is not a nice person. He works in espionage and is considered a rough and tough spy. Until he meets Dr. Gillian Fitzgerald who along with her brother is working to find a serum that would protect people from nuclear attacks. Gillian's brother and his daughter are kidnapped by a gang out to destroy the world and so does not want the serum to be produced. Trace is determined to save Gillian's brother and his daughter. The case becomes more important to him as his relationship with Gillian heats up. My only disappointment was that the ending seemed very rushed; I would rather have seen it drawn out a little more.
The last story of the O'Hurleys is about their only son, Trace. He had a big fight with his father when he was 18 and really harsh, hateful and cruel words were said by both. Trace left and was told to never come back. He hadn't for 12 years. He works for a company that is into world wide espionage trying to protect the world from the bad guys. He's burnt out and on vacation when a beautiful red head wants to hire him to find and rescue her brother and his daughter. This story takes you all over the world and into some really dangerous places. This story was an adventure and was exciting as well as a romance. Loved it.
