ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস আমার সবচেয়ে পছন্দের। শরদিন্দু এক্ষেত্রে আমার কাছে সবার সেরা। কেন যেন মনে হয় বঙ্কিমের ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাসগুলোর মধ্যে সাম্প্রদায়িকতা একটু বেশি ফুটে ওঠে। যেমন : এটা, রাজসিংহ, আনন্দমঠ ইত্যাদি। সত্যি বলতে বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম এই সার্থক উপন্যাস পড়ার ধৈর্য আর সামলাতে পারলাম না। তাই হাতে নিয়ে নিলাম বইটি। তাও আবার ঈদের দিনে । বলতে পারি বেশ উপভোগ করেছি বইটি।

উপন্যাস অনুসারে দিল্লীশ্বরের প্রধান সেনাপতি অম্বররাজ মানসিংহের পুত্র কুমার জগৎসিংহ বিষ্ণুপুর থেকে যাত্রাকালে ঝড়ের কবলে পড়ে। যার ফলে যাত্রাপথের নিকটবর্তী শৈলেশ্বর মহাদেবের মন্দিরে তারা আশ্রয় নেন। সেখানে ঘটনাচক্রে মান্দারণ দুর্গাধিপতির একমাত্র পুত্র মহারাজ বীরেন্দ্র সিংহের স্ত্রী বিমলা ও তার কন্যা দুর্গেশনন্দিনী তিলোত্তমার সঙ্গে তার সাক্ষাৎ হয়। পরস্পর পরস্পরের প্রকৃত পরিচয় গোপন রাখলেও জগৎসিংহ ও তিলোত্তমা পরস্পরের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হন।

উপন্যাসের এক পর্যায়ে পাঠান সেনাপতি ওসমান খাঁ সুকৌশলে মান্দারণ দুর্গ অধিকার করে ও বীরেন্দ্র সিংহ এবং তাঁর স্ত্রী বিমলা ও কন্যা তিলোত্তমাকে বন্দী করে। কুমার জগৎসিংহও বন্দী হন। পাঠান নবাব কতলু খাঁর বিচার নামক প্রহসনে বীরেন্দ্র সিংহকে হত্যা করা হয়। নিহত বীরেন্দ্র সিংহের স্ত্রী বিমলা পাঠান নবাব কতলু খাঁকে হত্যা করে পতি হত্যার প্রতিশোধ নেয়।

এরপর অনেক ঘাত প্রতিঘাত শেষে মান্দারণ পুনরায় স্বাধীন হয় ও দিল্লীশ্বরের প্রধান সেনাপতি অম্বররাজ মানসিংহের মাধ্যমে মহারাণী বিমলার হস্তে রাজ্যপাঠ হস্তান্তরিত হয় এবং মহাধুমধামের সাথে কুমার জগৎ সিংহ ও দুর্গেশনন্দিনী তিলোত্তমার মিলন ঘটে।

I'm a 90's kid, and I grew up watching Bangla movies that BTV broadcasted at 3.30 pm on Friday afternoons. We didn't have cables at first. So, BTV, and later, Ekushe were the only options for visual entertainment.
I can't help but wonder how much our society was getting brainwashed to become rapists and misogynists. Not for one or two years, but decades and decades.
How?
Every time there was a rape happening (almost graphically), it was always the hero's sister or mother getting raped. Never the heroine. Because a South Asian 'hero' should never accept a raped woman as his partner? Because heroine 'losing her honor' is not good enough to be a heroine anymore? Because 'proper' men just shouldn't be with a woman who 'isn't proper' anymore?
Whatever the reason is, those movies taught several generations of men and women that 'You may accept your sisters and mothers getting raped, but you must never accept it if your own woman isn't pure.'

This book is all about that.

It's the first fiction of Bengali literature. A contemporary one. In 2021, it is to be read as a historical. It was written in the 1800s. (Around that time, Bengali lit was all about writing big poems and epics in verses)
So, I was so much interested to read it right after I discovered its name around class 7 or 8 maybe (that's middle school). I didn't have access to the book before. But later, when I saw it with my teacher who was a student of literature at DU, I asked him to give me the book for a while.

The only good thing about this novel (Durgeshnondini) was, I finished it within a short time, and it had the proper craft of arousing emotions.
But the entire plot was damn annoying.
The hero leaves the heroine because he thought the villain king raped her; he blamed himself that he couldn't save her in time; now she has gone 'astray'. He left because he felt the heroine lost her treasure, in this case, her virginity. He even brooded about it for a while, things like getting drunk over it and trying to kill himself while she was still in the villain king's prison/ harem. He made no attempt to rescue her, of course, because he considered her dead, 'thinking' the king f***ed her already.

Way later, the hero thought he should avenge her. So, for revenge, he went to kill the king, but the king during his death told him that she is still 'pure'. Apparently, the villain king had more ethics and personality than the hero. He didn't want to touch her until she wanted to.

So suddenly, after knowing these, the hero wants her back! I mean, he really wants her back!!

I still remember, I just shut the book down for a while around that point. But I had to give the book back to my teacher because this novel was in his lit course that term. So, I finished it. The ending must have been forgettable because obviously, as I'm writing this review in 2021, I forgot what the ending was. I'm guessing she rejected him; if not, I really really hope she didn't commit suicide. Because in contemporary novels and film scripts written by South Asian men, the heroine/ the hero's sisters usually commit suicide after they get dishonored or abandoned by the men of their heart.

If you are interested to read this book, you are of course very much welcome. You have to understand the Bengali of 200 yo era. The author is still, after all, the first novelist of a language, and he is really a good one in that. He, I guess, tried to bring as many changes to the society, as it was possible around the 1800s when we were still colonized. But I have read better, more morally acceptable, Bengali novels written at that time. This book is one that I couldn't respect.

এমনি কী আর শব্দের জাদুকর!

দুর্গেশনন্দিনী "দুর্গ প্রধানের মেয়েকে" নিয়ে লেখা হলেও কাহিনীতে তার শক্তিশালী ভুমিকা খুবই কম। পার্শ চরিত্র বলেই চালানো যায়। তবে উপন্যাসে ব্যাপ্তি তার অনেক। সে-হিসেবে নায়িকার চরিত্রে বিমলা, আয়েষা দের দৌরাত্ম অনেক ভালো।

প্রত্যেক ক্যারেক্টর, বিশেষ করে মেয়েদের, যেভাবে বর্ণনা করা আছে এক কথায় অসাধারণ। বিশেষ বিশেষ অবস্থার বর্ণনার ভাষা সিলেক্ট করার যে ব্যাপারটা,  প্রত্যেক বাক্যকে অলঙ্কারে অলঙ্কারে ভরিয়ে রাখার যে বিষয় এ শুধু শব্দের জাদুকর, শব্দের জাহাজের দ্বারাই সম্ভব। আশমানির রূপের আর গুনের বর্ণনা একটু বেশিই জোশ।

কাহিনী সম্পর্কে বলার কিছু নেই। সময় সাপেক্ষে রুচিবোধ, আইন, ধারণা পরিবর্তন হয়। ১৯ শতকের একটা উপন্যাস যেটা আবার ১০ শতকের পটভূমি নিয়ে লেখা সেটার সাথে বর্তমান সময়ের চিন্তাধারার সাথে তুলনা করা বোকামি। সময় হিসেবে ভেবে দেখলে সবই ঠিক আছে। সেসময়ের মানুষ আপনার মতো মডার্ন ধারণা নিয়ে বসে নেই। (আর কে-ই বা বলতে পারবে আমাদের ধরণা মডার্ন, ভালো, উৎকৃষ্ট?)  যারা নাক ছিটকান এই বলে যে সতিত্ব নষ্ট হইছে কী না হইছে সেটা পুরা না জেনেই এমন করা ঠিক হয়নি। আর সতিত্ব নষ্ট হলেই বা এমন কী! আপনাদের ধরণার ভুল আছে। সে-সময় পুরো পৃথিবীটাই এমন ছিলো। বিশ্বের অন্যান্য উপন্যাস তুলনা করলেও দেখা যায় তখন এসবের রগরগে বর্ণনাও দিতে হতোনা। কারণ তখন ব্যাপারগুলোই এমন ছিলো। সমাজ, পরিবার কেউ-ই মেনে নিতে পারতোনা। যে সময়ে দাস প্রথা চালু ছিলো সে-সময় যুদ্ধ জয় করে নারীদের ভোগ করবে এটাই ছিলো ট্রেন্ড।

যাইহোক, বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস আসলেই সার্থক। ভাষাতে, পটভুমিতে, কাহিনীতে সবকিছুতেই পারফেক্ট।

বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় রচিত যে ৩/৪টা উপন্যাস পড়েছি তার বেশিরভাগ পড়বার জন্য দারুণ হলেও সত্যিকারের দারুণ ছিলোনা। তিনি আধুনিক ছিলেন না চিন্তায়, চেতনায় অনেকাংশে। অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই তাকে তার যুগে চলা নারীদের উপর বৈষম্য দূরীকরণ আন্দোলনকে সমালোচনা করে উপন্যাস বা গল্প লিখতে দেখা গেছে। সেই হিসেবে তার রচিত প্রথম উপন্যাস ‘দুর্গেশনন্দিনী’ সেসব থেকে মুক্ত। আইভানহোর আদলে লেখা হয়েছে বলে অনেক সমালোচনা থাকলেও আমার সে বই পড়া না থাকায় মন্তব্য করা গেলোনা। আর এখানে মুসলিম বিদ্বেষের কিছু খুঁজেও পেলামনা। মাত্র ২৭ বছর বয়সে এমন লেখা কীভাবে লিখেছেন সে এক আশ্চর্য্য বটে!

এই উপন্যাসে প্রায় ১৭০ বছর আগে লেখা না হয়ে আজকে হলে হয়তোবা বিদ্রুপ করা যেতো। যে প্রেমিক তার প্রেমিকার সতীত্ব আদৌ রক্ষা হয়েছে কীনা তার প্রমাণ জেনে নিয়ে ফের প্রেমিকার প্রেমে পড়তে হয়, সেই চরিত্রকে এতো মহান দেখাবার কী ছিল সে নিয়ে সমালোচনা করাই যেতো। আপাতত সেসব করছিনা। উনার লেখা পড়বোনা ভাবলেও ব্যপারখানা শেষে এই দাঁড়ায় যে “হৃদয়ের মাঝে এক বোধ জন্ম লয়! আমি তারে পারিনা এড়াতে”।

নারী দেবী দুর্গার রূপ। দুর্গেশনন্দিনীর এই ব্যাখ্যাই হওয়া উচিত। দুর্গপ্রধানের কন্যা, এই নাম অতি বেমানান।


প্রতিটি নারী চরিত্র স্বমহিমায় বিরাজমান। আয়েশার সেবা, বিমলার ত্যাগ আর তিলোত্তমার প্রেম, সবই অতি সুন্দরভাবে আকাঁ হয়েছে। আর ভাষা? আহা! যেখানে যেখানে দরকার, একদম মুগ্ধতা ছড়িয়ে দিয়েছেন। 


হ্যাঁ, বিংশ শতকে বসে নবম দশম শতকের ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস লিখলে অবশ্যই চিন্তাধারার পরিবর্তন লক্ষণীয়।  তবে তাতে সময়ের হিসাবে দোষ ধরা যায় না। আর যারা নিন্দুক আছেন, একবিংশ শতকে এসেও আমাদের চিন্তাধারার সারবস্তু খুব একটা পাল্টেছে কি?

আয়েশার প্রতি শতকোটি শ্রদ্ধা৷ নিজের ভালবাসা এবং বিচক্ষণতার পরিচয়ে, বঙ্কিম তাকে অনেক মডার্ন নারীদের চেয়েও মডার্ন এবং মহৎ করে তুলে ধরেছেন।


খুবই এনজয় করেছি, কিছু কিছু জায়গা মনে দাগ কেটে গেছে। ঋদ্ধ হলাম মির্চির পরিবেশনায় উপন্যাসটা শুনে।

সন্দেহ নেই বঙ্কিম শক্তিমান লেখক। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যের জন্য এটা একটা দুঃখের বিষয় যে বঙ্কিমের মত চরম সাম্প্রদায়িক ব্যক্তির হাতে বাংলায় কথিত প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস রচিত হয়েছিল। একইসাথে তিনি জাতপ্রথার মত পশ্চাৎপদ চিন্তাও লালন করতেন বলেও তার লেখা থেকে আভাস পাওয়া যায়। Rajmohan's Wife এ যিনি লিখেছিলেন “It is a notorious fact that many eminent zemindar families in Bengal owe their rise to some ignoble origin”। তিনিই দুর্গেশনন্দিনীতে লিখলেন ““তদুপরি রত্নাভরণ পারিপাট্য দেখিয়া পান্থ নিঃসন্দেহে জানিতে পারিলেন যে, এই নবীনা হীনবংশসম্ভূতা নহে।”মানুষের বংশ যে হীন হতে পারে না, শুধু জন্মের কারণে কেউ উঁচু নিচু, মহৎ-হীন হয় না এটা বঙ্কিম বোধহয় বিশ্বাস করতেন না। তারপর বারংবার দেখা যাবে লেখক কখনো নিজের বয়ানে কখনো নায়ক-নায়িকাদের বয়ানে মুসলমানদের “যবন” বলে উল্লেখ করছেন। এটা যে মুসলমানদের প্রতি তুচ্ছার্থে একটা গালি হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তা উল্লেখ করাও বাতুলতা। সাহিত্যে এবং চলচিত্রে নারীর প্রতি নায়কদের অসৌজন্যমূলক আচরণকে আমরা প্রমোট করতে দেখি। সাহিত্য চলচিত্রের এমন বর্ণনা বিভিন্ন জায়গায় স্বঘোষিত নায়কদের (কলেজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে এরকম উত্যক্তকারী বড় অপ্রতুল নয়) নারীদের উত্যক্ত করতে উৎসাহিত করে এটা বুঝতে মনোবিজ্ঞানী হওয়ার প্রয়োজন নেই। এবার আসি দুর্গেশনন্দিনীর নায়ক অপরিচিত এক স্ত্রীলোকের (পরবর্তীতে বোঝা যাবে ইনিই নায়িকা) প্রতি কিরূপ দৃষ্টি দেন। “রাজকুমার পুনর্বার অনিবার্য তৃষ্ণাকাতর লোচনে যুবতীর প্রতি দৃষ্টিপাত করিয়া, লম্ফ দিয়া অশ্বারোহণপূর্বক চলিয়া গেলেন।”এবার আসি মূল গল্পে। এখানে লেখক একটি তৃকোণ প্রেমের কাহিনি ফাঁদলেন। মুসলমান এক অন্তঃপুরবাসিনী রাজকন্যাকে নিয়ে আসলেন একজন রাজবন্দীর সেবিকা হিসেবে। এটা যে কোনো ভাবেই সম্ভব নয় সেটা সুস্থ মস্তিষ্কের মানুষের স্বীকার করতে দ্বিধা থাকার কথা নয়। প্রথমে এই সেবাকে সহোদরার বা বোনের স্নেহ বলে উল্লেখ করলেও পরবর্তীতে গিয়ে তিনি রাজকন্যা রাজপুত রাজপুত্রের প্রেমে পড়েছেন বলে উল্লেখ করেছেন। এ কাহিনি কি বঙ্কিম শুধু গল্পের প্রয়োজনে ফেঁদেছেন নাকি কোনো উদ্দেশ্য আছে তা সচেতন পাঠক মন মাত্রই জিজ্ঞেস করবে। এখানে সেই মুসলিম রাজকন্যার নাম উল্লেখ করা প্রয়োজন মনে করছি। তা নাহলে পাঠক এই সন্দেহের কারণ বুঝতে সক্ষম হবেন না। উপন্যাসে এই মুসলমান রাজকন্যার নাম “আয়েষা”। এছাড়াও মুসলমান সেনা কতৃক হিন্দু ব্রাহ্মণ্যদের মুরগী-পোলাও খাইয়ে জাতচুত্য করা, মুসলমান সেনার নারীর প্রতি লোভ, মুসলমানদের আল্লা-হো-আকবর বলে পিশাচের মত চিৎকার এসব বর্ণনার উল্লেখ বঙ্কিমের স্বভাব সিদ্ধ মুসলিম বিদ্বেষেরই প্রকাশ বলেই মনে হয়। আমার কাছে উপন্যাসের একটি দিকই শক্তিশালী বলে মনে হয়েছে। আর তা হল নারী চরিত্রের প্রাধান্য। Rajmohan's Wife এ একই বিষয় লক্ষণীয়। তৎকালিন পশ্চাৎপদ সমাজে নারীকে পুরুষের সমকক্ষ বা কোথাও কোথাও পুরুষের চেয়েও শক্তিশালী রূপে প্রকাশের জন্য বঙ্কিম অবশ্যই প্রশংসা পাওয়ার যোগ্য। বঙ্কিমের মত শক্তিমান লেখক যদি সাম্প্রদায়িকতার বয়ান না লিখে সম্প্রীতি সহাবস্থানের কথা লিখতেন, তাহলে হয়তো উপমহাদেশের ইতিহাস অন্য ভাবেও লেখা হতে পারতো।

পুনশ্চ: Rajmohan's Wife এর যে বাক্যটি এখানে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে তার পিছনে কিছু ঐতিহাসিক কারণ রয়েছে। ইংরেজদের কর আদায়ে নানা পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা এই অঞ্চলের পুরাতন বনেদি জমিদার বংশগুলোর বিলুপ্তির কারণ হয়েছিল। আর সেসব জমিদারি কিনে নিয়েছিলেন ইংরেজদের অধীনে চাকরি করা অনেক অখ্যাত হঠাৎ আঙুল ফুলে কলা গাছ হওয়া ধনীরা। কিন্তু এতে তাদের নীচকুলোদ্ভব হওয়া বলা আমি সমর্থন করি না। মানুষ নিজে তাঁর পরিচয় বহন করে। তার বংশ ভালো হলে সে ভালো, বংশ নীচু হলে সে নীচু তা সমর্থন যোগ্য নয়।

শুধুমাত্র আয়েষার জন্যে চার তারা।

বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের কমলাকান্তের দপ্তর আর কৃষ্ণকান্তের উইল পড়ে খুব ভালো লেগেছিল। কিন্তু এই বইটা তাদের সমতুল্য নয়। জগৎসিংহ চরিত্রটি ছিল জ্যাত্যাভিমানের মূর্ত প্রতীক, তিলোত্তমা তো কেবল পার্শ্ব চরিত্র। বিমলা চরিত্রটি অবশ্য শক্তিশালী ছিল, ওসমান ও।

কিন্তু সবকিছু ছাপিয়ে গেছে আয়েষা। তার অনবদ্য ভূমিকার প্রশংসা না করে পারছি না।

বাংলা ভাষায় রচিত প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস ধরা হয় "দুর্গেশনন্দিনী" কে। তার আগে রচিত হয় "আলালের ঘরের দুলাল" প্যারিচাদ মিত্রের হাত ধরে।ঠিক কি কারণে আলালের ঘরের দুলাল কে সার্থক উপন্যাস বলা হয় না এবং দুর্গেশনন্দিনী সে পরীক্ষা উতরে যেতে পেরেছে সেটা আমার জানা নেই।হয়তো আলালের ঘরের দুলাল পড়ার পর সে কথা কিছুমাত্র আন্দাজ করতে পারবো। সুতরাং পাঠকমাত্রই ক্ষমা করবেন আমার কাঁচা হাতের লেখায়। যতটুক ধারণা করতে পারি, সার্থক উপন্যাসের উপাদানগুলো পূর্ণ মাত্রায় থাকবে এবং কাহিনী হবে পূর্ণাঙ্গ।সেদিক থেকে চিন্তা করলে আমরা দুর্গেশনন্দিনী তে তা পূর্ণ মাত্রায় দেখতে পাই। স্টোরি টেলিং, চরিত্রের পূর্ণ বৈশিষ্ট এবং উপমা এইসবগুলো জায়গায় পূর্ণাঙ্গতা দুর্গেশনন্দিনীকে সার্থক করেছে বলে আমার ধারণা। সেই সাথে আয়েষার চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে ট্র‍্যাজেডিও পরিলক্ষিত হয়।সহজভাবে মুভির মতন চিন্তা করলে এমন দাঁড়ায় যে, প্রোটাগনিস্ট, হিরোইন, এন্টাগনিষ্ট ও পার্শ্বচরিত্র ইত্যাদি মিলে যেমন পূর্ণাঙ্গ মুভি হয় এবং বিয়োগান্ত ঘটনা বা ট্র‍্যাজেডির একটা জায়গা থাকে এসবই দুর্গেশনন্দিনী তে উপস্থিত।
সব মিলিয়ে এই যাত্রা ভালো উপভোগ করেছি।

ভাষাটা ভালো লেগেছে। সাধারণ একটা কথাও কেমন কাব্যিক ভাষায় লিখেছে। ছোটবেলায় পড়া প্রতিশব্দ খুব কাজে লেগেছে!
তবে কাহিনীর মর্ম আমি ঠিক বুঝিনি, মাঝে খেইও হারিয়ে ফেলেছিলাম! বিশেষত আয়েশা আর ওসমানের ব্যাপারটা ঠিক বুঝলাম না।

'দর্গেশনন্দিনী' বাংলা সাহিত্যে ভাষা ও ভাবের নবযুগ প্রবর্তন করেছিল। একই সাথে বাংলা শিল্প সাহিত্যে প্রথম শিল্পসম্মত উপন্যাস রচনা করার কৃতিত্ব তাঁরই। তাই এটা পড়া সময় অজানা এক উত্তেজনা টের পাচ্ছিলাম নিজের ভেতর!

ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস আমি খুব বেশি একটা পড়ি না। তবুও এদিকটায় আমার দূর্বলতা আছে। তিলোত্তমা, আয়েষা, বিমলা, জগৎসিংহ, ওসমান.. প্রতিটা চরিত্রই অসাধারণ। বেশ ভালো লাগলো। পরবর্তীতে আরো বেশি বেশি ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস পড়ার ইচ্ছেটাও তৈরি হলো 😉

Synopsis :
Durgeshanandini is written about pure love of father for his daughter, daughter for her father, mother for daughter, wife for husband, lover for lover and one-sided pure but painful love. As if each character was engaged in a competition to present themselves with everything! And while witnessing this, the readers have had to face various tough situation again and again! The tenderness, the water of worship like sacred Tilottama and the handsome, tactful warrior Prince Jagatsingh felt the love and affection towards each other, can fade any love story! And how can I compare Ayesha's one-sided love for Prince Jagatsingh or her cousin Osman's one-sided love for Ayesha? On the other hand, the love that Bimala has shown towards her sister's daughter as a mother is no less than the love of a mother.
And it is not possible to calculate the silent but deep love and devotion of Bimala towards her husband by finally killing Katul Khan! And how can I compare the intense love and affection that Ayesha and Osman have given to the enemy Jagatsingh by turning him away from the face of death?
In Durgeshanandini, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, as a human being, has supported everyones' feelings in an impeccable way. However, in order to acknowledge that feeling, the readers as well as the characters have had to go through many grief moments.

Review :
It is clear from reading Durgeshanandini that love and respect for relationships can be expressed in a very beautiful and fluent way while expressing one's responsibilities.

মেয়ের প্রতি বাবার,বাবার প্রতি কন্যার, কন্যার প্রতি মায়ের, স্বামীর প্রতি স্ত্রীর, প্রেমিকার প্রতি প্রেমিকের, প্রেমিকের প্রতি প্রেমিকার এবং একতরফা শুদ্ধ কিন্তু অসম্ভব যন্ত্রণাদায়ক ভালোবাসা নিয়েই রচিত হয়েছে দুর্গেশনন্দিনী। প্রতিটি চরিত্র যেনো সবটুকু দিয়ে নিজেদের ফুটিয়ে তুলে ধরার প্রতিযোগিতায় লিপ্ত ছিলো! আর এর সাক্ষী হতে গিয়ে পাঠকদের মানসিকভাবে বারবার নানান বন্ধুর পরিস্থিতির সম্মুখীন হতে হয়েছে।

কোমল, স্নিগ্ধ,পূজোর জলের মতো পবিত্র তিলোত্তমা এবং সুবিশাল, সুদর্শন, সুকৌশলী যোদ্ধা রাজকুমার জগৎসিংহ পরস্পরের প্রতি যে মায়া আর প্রেম অনুভব করেছেন তার গভীরতা যেকোনো ভালোবাসার কাহিনীকে ম্লান করে দিতে পারে! আর যুবরাজ জগৎসিংহের প্রতি আয়েশার একপাক্ষিক ভালোবাসা কিংবা আয়েশার প্রতি তার চাচাতো ভাই ওসমানের একপাক্ষিক ভালোবাসার তুলনাই বা কিসে করব?

এইদিকে মা হিসেবে চিরযৌবনা বিমলার তার বোনের মেয়ের প্রতি যে স্নেহ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে তাতো কোনো অংশেই মাতৃস্নেহের চেয়ে কম নয়। আর স্বামীর প্রতি বিমলার যে নীরব অথচ গভীর ভালোবাসা এবং নিজের নিবেদন প্রকাশ পেয়েছে শেষপর্যন্ত কতুল খাঁকে কতল করার মধ্য দিয়ে তার হিসেব করাও সম্ভবপর নয়! আর শত্রু জগৎসিংহকে যে তীব্র স্নেহ এবং মমতা দিয়ে আয়েশা ও ওসমান মৃত্যুদূতের সামনে থেকে ঘুরিয়ে এনে নতুন প্রাণদান করেছে তারই বা তুলনা করব কিসে?

দুর্গেশনন্দিনীতে বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় মানুষ হিসেবে নিজের ভালোলাগার প্রতি ভালোবাসাকে এক অনবদ্য মহিমায় মেলে ধরেছেন। অবশ্য এই অনুভূতিকে স্বীকৃতি দিতে গিয়ে চরিত্রগুলোর পাশাপাশি পাঠকেদরও অনেক দুঃখময় মূহুর্তের মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়েছে৷

সম্পর্কগুলোর প্রতি ভালোবাসা, শ্রদ্ধা প্রকাশ করতে গিয়ে সম্পর্কের কিংবা নিজের দায়িত্বকেও যে খুব সুন্দর এবং সাবলীলভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলে ধরা যায়, এটা দুর্গেশনন্দিনী পড়লেই বুঝা যায়।

It's a four star read, why?........... cause i would love to see Osman as the lead hero rather than Jagathsingho. Readers will get plenty of reasons as why i have this opinion.

Now coming to the actual review of this story;
The story intertwined Indian Ruling history of that time very delicately and prepared the whole plot as a deliciously dangerous endeavour for all the history lovers out there.

It all starts in the Shoileshwar Shiva temple and thus the plot, though seemingly simple at first sight becomes like a cobweb of mysteries, war, Ruling, where there's at one part is Durgeshnandini,her father and Bimala and on the other part is Mansingho and Jagathsingho and Mughals, amaizingly sweeping you off to the Pathans fort's inner corner where Osman and Ayesha awaits for you.

Kudos to Bimala, Osman and Ayesha
Fate and actions have built up this amazing tale of bravery, love, sacrifice, broken heart and courage.

I wanted the character Osman to have a bit more limelight, being a brave man and a gentle lover yet a brave Pathan captain.

ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস মাত্রই আমার প্রিয়। তার মধ্যে সবার উপরে শরদিন্দু।
বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের উপন্যাসগুলোতে সাম্প্রতিকতা যেন একটু বেশিই ফুটে উঠেছে। দুর্গেশনন্দিনী এর থেকে ব্যতিক্রম হতে পারে নি। তবে সত্যিই যে উপন্যাসের স্বার্থক রূপ ফুটে উঠেছে যা পাঠক অবগত। বিশেষ করে চরিত্রের গুণ বর্ণনায় এতো শব্দ ব্যবহার যায় ; আমার সাহিত্যাঙ্গনের প্রারম্ভিকে এটি বিশেষ স্মরণীয়।

It is one of the wonderful and extraordinary novels written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Love the historic fiction, but somewhere I feel that the ending of the story doesn't meet the expectations that I get while at the beginning. But I feel for those who love historic fiction; it is one of the best suggestions for them.

I had read Bankim's other book "Rajmohan's Wife" and had liked it. That's why I picked up Durgeshnandini. Unfortunately, it was nothing like Rajmohan's Wife and it just put me to sleep. It's highly probable that the Bengali original might have been more readable.

বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস-টা শুনে নিলাম সানডে সাসপেন্সে। তাতেই বুঝেছি পড়ার ধৈর্য আমার হতো না। ড্রামা-র চূড়ান্ত। তদুপরি, প্রেমের ক্ষেত্রে যে মূল্যবোধ এই গল্পে 'সাধারণ' সেটা এখনকার সময়ের পাঠকের কাছে রীতিমতো shocking।

পড়লে হয়তো সেসব সরিয়ে রেখে উপন্যাসের সার্থকতা লক্ষ্য করা যেতো। আপাতত সে আগ্রহ নেই।

একটা আজাইরা ভাব নিতে গিয়ে পড়েছি। মোটামুটি লেগেছে। এই ভাষা কীভাবে বুঝেছি, নিজেও জানি না। বহুদিন বাংলা বই পড়া হয় না দেখে খারাপ লাগছিল। এতো কাঠখোট্টা বই ধরেই খারাপ লাগা কমাতে হলো!

Durgeshanandini's story shows that in the war between Pathan and Mughals over the occupation of Orissa, Delhi sent Akbar Akbar Amberraj Mansingh as the ruler of Bengal-Bihar to occupy Orissa. Maharaja Mansingh engaged his son Jagatsingh in this work. Jagatsingh, a skilled warrior of Rajput, repeatedly engaged in 'surgical strikes' to annoy the Pathans. It was at this time that Sundar Tilottama, the only sixteen-year-old daughter of local landlord Birendra Singh, met Jagatsingh at the Shaileshwar temple. Unbeknownst to them, they both fell in love with each other. Ignoring various obstacles, their love goes on, the story of our Durgeshanandini goes on.

Bankim created his Durgeshanandini by associating Jagatsingh and Tilottama with the Mughal-Pathan conflict of history. Durgeshanandini's main premise is not history, but love. Although there is a shadow of history, the triangular love of Jagatsingh-Tilottama-Ayesha has moved the reader more than history. Like McGaffin in the movie, Bankim uses history in his novels just to get the story going, to keep the plot moving.


Birendra Singh was angry with Raja Mansingh. At first glance, this may seem very natural to the reader, as many kings at that time could not accept Mansingh's submission to the Mughals. Especially the Rajput warriors and kings and many kings of the province of Bengal were very displeased with this. But the reader will gradually notice in the climax of the novel that the reason for this hatred of Birendra Singh is not only that, but also his other account with Mansingh.
The character of Bimala in the novel is mysterious. The reader will first be confused about his identity. One must be really surprised when his true identity is finally revealed to the reader. In fact, the character of Bimala is a reflection of the oppressed women of the abominable society and she cannot claim her rights openly. In a patriarchal society, there are still many women like Bimala who are living a life of oppression.

The mind of the reader must be saddened for these two unfortunates Ayesha and Osman. Bankim could have given more beautiful results to these two characters if he had wanted to. But Bankim did not do so in the interest of the novel or in the context of the appeal of history.

There is love, there is politics, there is diplomacy in Durgeshanandini. And there is a little comedy. Bankim has described some parts with his usual joke. He has created some unnecessary characters just so that the novel does not become completely clumsy. Gajapati Vidyadigagaj, Ashmani These two characters have been created for entertainment purposes. And the succinct description of the form and physique of the sky, the reformation of Gajapati, etc., will surely make the reader laugh.

The characters in the novel are interrelated. This means that the characters are not isolated entities - although seemingly isolated, they have some kind of relationship with each other without the knowledge of them and the reader. Although the first novel, Bankim highlights this relationship with Munsiana. The reader will be amazed to discover this sum.

The ending of the novel is a bit confusing. As if happiness and sorrow go hand in hand - the reader has to decide which one to choose - don't end the novel with the obsession of happiness, end the novel with a sigh for someone in a sad heart.

“কাহাকে বিস্মৃত হইবো? তোমার সখীর রূপ একবার দর্শনেই আমার হৃদয়মধ্যে গম্ভীরতর অঙ্কিত হইয়াছে, এ হৃদয় দগ্ধ না হইলে তাহা আর মিলায় না। লোকে আমায় হৃদয় পাষাণ বলিয়া থাকে, পাষাণে যে মূর্তি অঙ্কিত হয়, পাষাণ নষ্ট না হইলে তাহা আর মিলায় না।“
“ভালোবাসায় তিলার্ধ পরিমান সংকট হইলে যেইখানে পরম স্রষ্টা দর্শন দিতে নারাজ, সেইখানে উৎকৃষ্ট পরিমান ভালোবাসা প্রদান ব্যতীত মানুষের ভালোবাসা আসা করা নিছক নির্বুদ্ধিতা।“

অসাধারণ শব্দচয়নে লেখা একটা উপন্যাস। তবে “বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস” জেনে পড়তে গিয়ে বেশ আশাহতই হয়েছিলাম। ব্যক্তিগতভাবে ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস পড়তে উপভোগ করি, এখানে ইতিহাসের কিছু অংশও কাহিনীর মাধ্যমে তুলে ধরা হলেও দুর্গেশনন্দিনী মূলত প্রণয়কাহিনী। লেখক তাঁর তরুণ বয়সে তাঁর বৃদ্ধ খুল্ল পিতামহের কাছে গড় মান্দারণের গল্প শুনেছিলেন , সেই গল্পের কাঠামোর উপর ভর করে লেখা হয়েছে এই উপন্যাস - দুর্গেশনন্দিনী। অবশ্য লেখক তাঁর আনন্দমঠ উপন্যাসের সূচনায় জানিয়েছিলেন, “উপন্যাস উপন্যাসই,ইতিহাস নহে।” তাই এই উপন্যাসে ইতিহাস না খুঁজে কাহিনীর আলাপ দিচ্ছি।

উপন্যাসের কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র দুর্গপ্রধানের মেয়ে তিলোত্তমা, অথচ পুরো উপন্যাসে তার উপস্থিতি চোখে পড়ার মতোই কম ছিলো। তিলোত্তমার থেকে আয়েষা এবং বিমলা চরিত্রটি বেশ শক্তিশালী এবং উপন্যাসের ভিত্তি স্থাপনে সব থেকে সুন্দর ভাবে ভূমিকা রাখে। বিশেষভাবে, বিমলা চরিত্রটির বুদ্ধি, সাহস এবং পুরো উপন্যাস জুড়ে তার উপস্থিতির জন্য তাকেই উপন্যাসের অন্যতম মূল চরিত্র বলা চলে।

লেখক একটি ত্রিভুজ প্রেমের গল্পই গড়লেন । প্রেমের উপন্যাস আমার ভালো লাগে না, সেজন্যই হয়তো নিজ ভাষার প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস পড়েও তেমন উপভোগ করতে পারি নাই। তবে আমি মনে করি ,উপন্যাসের ভাষাগত অবস্থান খুবই দৃঢ় - এতো সুন্দর আর শক্তিশালী ভাষাশৈলীর কারণেই এই উপন্যাস কালজয়ী উপন্যাস হিসেবে সাহিত্যজগতে পরিচিত হয়েছে। লেখক শব্দ নিয়ে জাদুকরী খেলা দেখাবার পরেও উপন্যাসে কিছু অপূর্ণতা ছিলো। নারী চরিত্রগুলোর রূপের অতিসয় বর্ণনা বেশ একঘেয়ে লাগে। পড়তে গিয়ে বেশ কয়েকবার খেই হারাতে হয়েছে। তবে সব মিলিয়ে লেখকের গল্প বর্ণনার ভাষা প্রাণবন্ত। গুরুগম্ভীর ভাষায় শব্দচয়ন না করে যদি এই কাহিনী চলিত সহজ প্রমিত বাংলায় লেখা হলে এটাকে নিঃসন্দেহে কিশোর উপন্যাস হিসেবে চালিয়ে দেয়া যেতো।

উপন্যাস জুড়ে লেখকের জাতিবৈষম্য বিষয়ক মানসিকতার হালকা আঁচ পাওয়া যায়। তবে উপন্যাস যে সময়ের লেখা, সেই সময়ে প্রেক্ষাপট বিবেচনা করলে এটা বড় করে দেখার মতো কিছু নয়, কিংবা সেটা বড় করে দেখার মতো বিষয় হলেও সে বিষয়ে আলাদা ভাবে বিশদ লেখালেখি করা যায়। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম সার্থক উপন্যাস হিসেবে উপন্যাসজুড়ে নারী চরিত্রের প্রাধান্য প্রশংসনীয়।

সত্যি বলতে, বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের কমলাকান্তের দপ্তর আর কৃষ্ণকান্তের উইল পড়ে যতটা মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলাম, এই বই তাঁর সিকিভাগও মুগ্ধ করতে পারেনি।

১০ এর মাঝে ৬ দেয়ার মতো উপন্যাস। তবে ক্লাসিক বই হিসেবে অবশ্যপাঠ্য।
