[Finding Ultra, Revised and Updated Edition: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself] [By: Roll, Rich] [May, 2013]
4.5 - could end up being 5 stars once I sit with it for a while.
The appendixes had some compelling arguments in favour of veganism, all of which citing the personal health benefits. What does it say about me that these arguments resonate with me more than those involving environmentalism?
The chapters detailing race days were exhilarating, and had me staying up late to finish.
Impressive athletic accomplishments by a former sedentary alcoholic.
This is a good book, that I really enjoyed. The story is gripping, and mostly well told. Overall, 4 stars, mainly because at points, I couldn't put it away.
that being said, there's a couple of points I'm not sure I liked. - I came for a guide/self help book based on a personal story, but it is much more the other way around. Much of the book describes the personal story, with some guidance packed in and an extra hour or so packed at the end. - The guidance is a bit brute forced (eat vegan, set great goals with daily steps). There are better books on those subjects out there. - There is slightly too much of Rich blowing his own trumpet. The story and achievements are great, but probably had a greater foundation in fitness/writing training etc.
I'm genuinely surprised to see no reviews on this revised version. After reading through some of the negative comments on the initial release of the book I was somewhat sceptical to "pick it up", but now I'm incredibly grateful I did.
I've listed to the audiobook version and the book is nothing but spectacular, a real gem!
A story about transformation, and while it's deeply personal it also seems to resonate with a generic arc of the human condition. It's not for everyone, I get that... but for me it left quite the impact.
As for the author, if he'll ever read this: I thank you! For sharing your journey and doing the amazing work you do with your Podcast. I know you don't need to hear this, you know it, but I want to say it regardless... the work you are doing is indeed making a difference!
Started out decently inspirational and relatable, discussing Rich’s struggles and experiences. But the last few chapters were difficult to get through. They were so repetitive, Rich constantly whining that he can’t function without expensive high quality foods was just annoying and took away from the point of the story. The addition of the last chapter in this revised version was great, it was thoughtful and something I hope to look back on when I need inspiration to achieve my goals.
I often find myself recommending this book a little motivations, the great images that Rich establishes I really like the epic Rich and his friend established. It serves as a motivation what we can do and acquired that inner voice of resistance.
DNF - not because I didn't like it but it turned more and more into some sort of self help book and I wasn't looking for that at all. So thanks but time to quit here. Started out inspiring though.
