Men of Color: Fashion, History, and Fundamentals

Rate this book
Wonderful reviews and word-of-mouth helped make the hardcover edition of this title--a unique celebration of African-American male fashion and style--a best-seller. Essence called it "a testament to the creative spirit of Black men . . . filled with striking photographs of Black legends and insightful essays about the historical context of their apparel." With sleek photographs and a host of celebrity interviews, the special value hardcover edition captures the elegance of Nat King Cole, comfort of Bill Cosby, hip-hop style of LL Cool J, and sex appeal of Denzel Washington. Expert advice rounds out the "history of fabulous sartorial style" (Essence), showing readers how to accomplish the same looks on their own. This is a must-have for Black men--and the women who love them.

This book is an excellent resource for those looking to deeper their knowledge of black and brown fashion and history. Not only is the book well written it’s also incredibly well organized. Each chapter starts by illustrating a creative medium, from music to sports, and the influencers of those mediums throughout history. It then goes to explain how fashion influenced their status and how their style influenced culture. Then the book interviews a master in that medium and their relationship with fashion. Examples being, Tyson Beckford, Morgan Freeman, and André De Sheilds. Then, the book takes a specific article of clothing from the hat down to the shoes and explains its cultural economic significance within the black community. Finally, we hear from a specific designer who works with that type of garment.

This book goes into extreme detail to explain black history and how it relates to dress with a plethora of wonderful pictures, testimonials from living tastemakers, and factual recollections from throughout time. I highly recommend this book to anyone but especially those involved in the fashion, costume, and entertainment industries.
