Ero indecisa se sarebbe stato un 4 1/2☆ o un 5☆. Ma alla fine ho optato per il 5☆ come gli altri. Non nascondo che all'inizio mi ha fatto dannare nel chiedermi chi era Lupin. Ma poi SPOILER eccolo che arriva solo nella seconda parte e non era nessuno dei presenti. FINE SPOILER
Tuttavia la lettura è stata piacevole quindi non me la sento di dare un voto minore al libro.

You know, I do not often put books down. Even when they're problematic, I try to push forward to the end to educate self about the way the world used to be. But man, this one.
Post-WWI, Our Hero is recovering from injuries with a group of fellow soldiers and stumbles onto a plot centered around one of the nurses who treated him. The rest of the story carries on in grand Lupin style-- and I'll say I've been a huge fan of every book til now-- and would be fantastic if Leblanc hadn't decided to go with horrifically racist "comic relief."
One of Lupin's comrades-in-arms is a Senegalese soldier who lost an arm in battle, and who is nicknamed Ya-Bon because severe facial injuries leave him unable to speak and it's a sound he often makes.
Ya-Bon starts the book like a total boss, kicking major butt-- his remaining arm is superhero strong-- but his character development immediately tanks. He is constantly compared to a dog or "dumb animal," his girlfriend is described as being "coarse" and nearly as ugly as he is-- not because of any injuries, mind you, which Leblanc does see as honorable, but because of his African features. He is depicted as incapable of understanding his own strength and accidentally kills people several times. He has to have everything explained very carefully to him multiple times-- in part because he isn't fluent in French, but that seems secondary-- laughs constantly, and adores it when Lupin frequently abuses him. Granted, in these scenes Lupin also comes off foolish (or, by modern standards, a ::complete asshole::) but it's a relationship (blatantly stated) between a man and his favorite dog, and the longer it goes on the worse (yes, it is in fact possible!) the caricature gets.
We're also presented with some really awful caricatures of people from the Middle East (nasty, brutish, greedy, murderous, even with the awful physical descriptions aside.) It's nauseating.
I will say that one positive in the book is how strongly Leblanc argues for the acceptance of wounded veterans in postwar French society-- but it's unfortunately at the expense of those who are physically challenged for other reasons.
Just couldn't finish this one; it was too painful to read. Will try again with the next Lupin book and hope against hope it's better.

Ini naskhah terjemahan ke-2 yang aku baca dalam siri Arsène Lupin terbitan Penerbit X. Plotnya tentang kisah cinta antara seorang tentera veteran, Kapten Patrice Belval dan seorang jururawat bernama Coralie yang tanpa sengaja terjebak dalam konflik perebutan emas di kalangan ahli sebuah organisasi rahsia. Pertelingkahan yang penuh babak aksi dan adegan pembunuhan ini juga telah mengheret Kapten Patrice ke dalam misteri kematian ayahnya dan membuka rahsia hubungan kekeluargaan di antara dia dan Coralie yang sebenarnya telah terjalin sejak lama dulu.
Ada sisi intens dalam penceritaannya yang aku suka walaupun agak ralat sedikit sebab watak Lupin cuma muncul di pertengahan kalut cerita. Berlatar kota Perancis sekitar 1900an dalam tembok-tembok rumah lama di perkampungan Passy yang menyimpan sejarah dan misteri pengkhianatan dan penyeludupan jongkong-jongkong emas. Deskriptif dan agak meleret sikit awalnya sebab banyak fokus pada emosi Kapten Patrice dan drama cinta dia dengan Coralie namun agak seronok bila Lupin muncul dengan babak penyamaran dan bagaimana liciknya Lupin menipu dan cuba bongkarkan kes sambil tolong Kapten Patrice merungkai tragedi pembunuhan yang terjadi.
Gemar dengan watak Lupin yang manipulatif tapi sangat pintar ambil peluang. Naratif yang mudah dijangka dan kurang rumit kalau nak banding dengan naskhah The Hollow Needle yang aku baca sebelum ini. Kerja terjemahan yang agak bagus juga sebab tak rasa janggal atau susah nak faham jalan ceritanya. Rekomendasi kepada pembaca yang gemar siri klasik (buku ini pertama kali terbit pada tahun 1917) dalam tema misteri dan jenayah terutama yang minat watak antagonis seperti Arsène Lupin sebagai watak utama!

Χρησιμοποιώντας ένα στυλ γλαφυρό και γεμάτο ζωντάνια ο Morris Leblanc χειρίζεται με εξαιρετική επιδεξιότητα τις ίντριγκες που επιβάλλει το συγκεκριμένο λογοτεχνικό είδος. Προικίζει τον ήρωά του με έναν αέρα μυστηρίου και πανουργίας στοιχείο ικανό να κρατήσει αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον.

Encore un Arsène Lupin qui manque de Arsène Lupin qui n'ai présent qu'à partir de la sedonce partie. Son arrivé change vraiment le ton et le rythme de l'histoire. La première partie ressemble plus à une mise en situation un peu trop longue.
Loin d'être mon tome préféré mais toujours mieux que le précédent L'éclat D'obus ou Arène Lupin n'apparaît que pendant un paragraphe.

My least favourite Lupin book so far. I would not recommend it. The plot is weak and not as exciting as in other books of the series.

I have basically two impressions here that are almost distinct from one another.
As a novel read for pleasure: this is a very plot-driven story. The pacing picks up quite a lot in the second half, and it really did surprise me through some of its twists and turns. Lupin himself doesn't turn up until fairly late in the story, and unfortunately the characterization of many of the other characters is... less than stellar, ranging from the overtly racist to the merely strange. This includes the functional protagonist, Patrice Belval--who reads as by turns surprisingly childish, casually cruel, infatuated, and strangely unaffected by things that seem like they ought to inspire some kind of emotional reaction. He's not a particularly bright protagonist, sometimes frustratingly so, but this is undoubtedly in part to permit Arsène Lupin t0 shine (when he finally shows up). Coralie seems to lose a lot of her personality as the novel progresses, though somehow this serves to make the romance feel less forced.
More interesting, really, is reading the book as an adventure story set in 1915 and published in 1917--it's not precisely a war story, though the war is taking place in the background and is vital to the characters' histories. Patrice Belval is a wounded French officer, Coralie a nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Arsène Lupin, in wartime, is trying to use his talents for the good of France. Read as a novel featuring a popular character that was published during the First World War and set during it, it's really a very fascinating look at balancing a popular adventure story with a wartime message for a French audience on patriotism, the perception of disabled veterans, and contributions to the war effort even outside of active soldiering.

For a long time this was going to be just 1 or 2 stars, entirely because Patrice Blevel was such an ignorant, racist, entitled ass. For a full 20% of the book this apparent war hero persistently berates and abuses his injured Senegalese friend Ya-Bon. I almost put the book down in disgust, to be honest. This wasn't what I'd come to expect from the other 6 Lùpin books I'd read.
However, I'm glad i stuck with it because once the story gets going, it's typical Arsène Lupin (he appears, in dramatic fashion, about halfway through). It's not the best - some of the deduction relies on information the reader hasn't been given, and often Lupin appears even more unbelievably superhuman than normal, but it was a creditable rescue of a story that was teetering on the unsavable.
However, I'm glad i stuck with it because once the story gets going, it's typical Arsène Lupin (he appears, in dramatic fashion, about halfway through). Cerita diawali dengan narasi tentang kapten Patrice Belval yang sedang melakukan aksi penyelamatan terhadap seorang perawat bernama Coralie. Siapa sangka tindakannya tersebut justru membawanya terlibat pada konspirasi internasional yang telah berlangsung selama puluhan tahun. Masalah makin rumit ketika ditemukan hubungan yang unik antara dirinya dan Coralie, hal ini membuat nyawa keduanya berada dalam bahaya. Saat keadaan makin memburuk, sahabatnya Ya-Bon memanggil Arsene Lupin. Dari sinilah petualangan mereka menjadi semakin menarik dan sedikit demi sedikit mistery mulai terkuak.
Meski dari awal saya sudah menjagokan Kapten Belval yang pemberani, kemunculan Lupin yang misterius dan elegan tetap mencuri perhatian. (Kamu bisa membayangkan “kaito Kid” rekaan Aoyama Gosho. Aku yakin, Aoyama sensei terinspirasi dari tokoh Lupin saat menciptakan karakter Kid).
Buku ini penuh aksi dan twist-twist menarik. Bab awalnya saja sudah menampilakn aksi hertoik yang gentleman. Awal-awal buku ini memang sukses membuatku terus membalik novel ini dan melahapnya sampai habis. Penyajian edisi terjemahan ini juga cukup “renyah” dan gak kaku. Sehingga rasanya seperti membaca buku terjemahan biasa saja. Agak mengagetkan juga karna buku ini sama klasiknya dengan Sherlock Holmes dkk. Bagusnya terjemahan dan editing buku ini membuatku ngintip-ngintip blog penerjemahnya, mbak dina Begum . Ternyata, eh ternyata (lagi) buku ini bahakan tidak diterjemahkan dari bahasa aslinya. Tapi dari versi bahasa Inggris. It’s a WOW! So, empat bintang sangat pantas untuk buku ini.
Satu-satunya masalah yang saya hadapi saat membaca buku ini pun sama dengan ketika membaca terjemahan lainnya. Well, yah! saya sangat payah dalam mengahafal-hafal nama. Dan di buku ini, Maurice LeBlance sering tidak konsisten dalam memperkenalkan tokohnya. Kadang dengan nama depan, kadang dengan nama keluarga. Jadi begitu sang penulis merubah sebutan untuk tokohnya, saya langsung ngernyit “Lah, ini kapten Belval siapa lagi?”, Baru deh kemudian saya dapat hidayah “Eh iya, namanya kan Patrice Belval -____-” (Beuh, ketahuan deh lemotnya saya ). Hal ini selalu saya hadapi tiap membaca karya terjemahan. Untungnya saya hanya membutuhkan beberapa bab untuk pembiasaan, hehe. Tapi walau bagaimanapun saya tetap menyukai karya terjemahan, terutama sertial-serial detektif klasik.

Como um romance lido por prazer: esta é uma história muito orientada para o enredo. O Lupin não aparece até bem tarde no enredo.
O protagonista funcional, Patrice Belval – que lê como surpreendentemente infantil, casualmente cruel, apaixonado e estranhamente não afetado por coisas que parecem inspirar algum tipo de reação emocional. Ele não é um protagonista particularmente brilhante, às vezes frustrantemente, mas isso é, sem dúvida, em parte para permitir que Arsène Lupin brilhe (quando ele finalmente aparece). Coralie parece perder muito de sua personalidade à medida que o romance avança, embora de alguma forma isso sirva para tornar o romance menos forçado.
Mais interessante, na verdade, é ler o livro como uma história de aventura ambientada em 1915 e publicada em 1917 – não é exatamente uma história de guerra, embora a guerra esteja a ocorrer em segundo plano e seja vital para as histórias dos personagens.

Sejatinya novel ini berbahasa Prancis, aku menerjemahkan dari versi bahasa Inggris. Entah karena ini karya klasik atau bukan, frasa “no doubt” muncul 46x di dalam novel ini, ada di setiap bab. Rekor! Contohnya:
It was no doubt in this lodge, or in the garden round it, that they were murdered.
No doubt the drama was being continued, as he had felt that it would be, but perhaps elsewhere and far away from Coralie.
“Did you see? There are some words there, the last, no doubt, that my father wrote.”
Dan seterusnya, yang membuat proses penerjemahan jadi tak terlupakan.
Sempat stres, kukira dog ear alias terlipat, ternyata efek cetak. Visimedia memang pintar mendandani novel. :)

OKAY IM SO PISSED.
It took so long for Lupin to appear. The first half were this nonsense romance between Patrice and Coralie. I didn't sign up for this romance! Not to mention how hot-headed Patrice is and how weak Coralie was in the portrayal. All she does was fainting damn it! The police was stuck, there were no progress so the story crawled and just filled with this declaration of love here and there.
But then Lupin appear and the story progressed quickly! Kidnapping, murder, chasing... Oh it's so fun to read once Lupin is there! And there were several plot twist that were hard to believe.
While I really like what Lupin does to this story, it still doesn't erase the dissapointment caused by the slow first half.

Ein typischer Arsène Lupin: Mysteriös, verworren, unzählige Sackgassen, aus denen unverhofft neue Türen aufgehen. Spannend bis zur letzten Seite. Da stört auch die mitunter etwas gar zu schmachtvolle Liebesgeschichte, die den roten Faden durch das Buch bildet, wenig. Für alle, die mit dem Helden von Maurice Leblanc vertraut sind, ein Genuss. Für Leser, die den charmanten, amüsanten und klugen Meisterdieb noch nicht kennen ist dieses Buch aber nicht unbedingt als Einstieg empfohlen.
Die mir vorliegende Ausgabe aus dem Belle Époche Verlag ist allerdings eine Zumutung: Tausende von Druck- und Rechtschreibefehlern, Wortdoppelungen und eine schreckliche Interpunktion machen das Lesen teilweise wirklich schwierig.

Debo admitir que hasta ahora es el libro que menos me gustó de la serie pero esa es solo una opinión personal. En esta entrega hay mucha más descripción de los hechos y Arsène Lupin no aparece tanto cómo en los libros anteriores. Es un estilo diferente al que veníamos viendo pero aún así es un buen libro. La historia de Arsène Lupin tiene cada vez más elementos y eso me parece genial. Este libro pertenece a la colección de “Obras Selectas de Arsène Lupin” pero de todas maneras también se pueden conseguir por separado. Tengo muchas ganas de seguir leyendo estos libros.

Para variar, Lupin se preocupa más en ayudar a una joven pareja que en llenarse los bolsillos. Y además patriótico le resultó el reembolso. Parece que morir por una temporada lo ha vuelto más amable.
En fin, con este libro cierro el mes de Lupin hasta el próximo año. Todavía me quedan muchas obras sobre él por leer, pero seguro que seguirán siendo entretenidas.

"Tu pasaporte está en regla. Paris-Infierno. Billete simple... ¡Viajeros al tren!"
Primera mitad lenta y poco interesante. La segunda mitad mejora, pero la historia se alarga demasiado además de ser predecible desde un principio. Lo mejor, lo de siempre: la presencia y los diálogos de Lupin, aunque esta vez no salvan la novela.

Ayer no podía dormir y me ventilé casi entero este libro. El principio es desconcertante y hasta aburrido, pero una vez llegamos a la parte de Lupin... Qué maravilla. No podía parar de leer. Muy chula esta aventura de Lupin, me he reído un montón.
