What does it take to be a homework survivor? Teachers from across America tell girls how to cope with copious assignments in this book of tips and tools. Readers will learn how to bring home what they need, choose the best place to study, and make the most of mini breaks. They'll read about how to do smart research, memorize just about anything, and keep their brain and body going strong. The tear-out tools--including stickers, mini posters, door hangers, and flashcards--take some of the "work" out of homework.
As an American Girl author and editor, Erin Falligant has developed books across a number of series, including Angelina Ballerina, Hopscotch Hill School, and American Girls Short Stories. While writing Braving the Lake, a story with more than 20 endings, she had great fun imagining the many paths the story could take. She views the Innerstar University™ books as “wonderfully challenging to write and a great teaching tool for readers, who can read the stories again and again to find out how the decisions they make lead to different outcomes.” Ms. Falligant has a master's degree in child clinical psychology and coaches Girls on the Run, where she helps girls build self-confidence and create paths of their own near her home just outside of Madison, Wisconsin.
We have read a couple of the books in American Girl's Smart Girl's Guide series. I think they are good for older elementary school-age and middle school-age girls because they offer candid advice and good practical tips for girls at that age. It breaks my heart just a tiny bit that our girls might take advice more from a book than from me, but I think that it's good to have an objective second opinion besides just 'Mom.'
This book is similar, but focuses primarily on homework. It's in the School Smarts series, also by American Girl. The book is fairly short, with lots of tips and ideas for staying focused and organized, managing time and effort, and creating a quiet, work-friendly environment in which to do homework. It's a good book and helps to reinforce a lot of the things I already tell our girls.
