"The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a gift from heaven. The believer who receives this gift is given supernatural power to witness and serve as a disciple of Jesus." (Derek Prince, Self-Study Bible Course, Page 55)

I found this course an excellent course which takes you through many topics in the Bible and has you memorize a Scripture per lesson; therefore, you end up memorizing 27 key verses of Scripture after finishing this study. Everything it teaches is backed up by Scripture and has you look up the Scripture references for yourself; then has a course key to check your answers and a marking page to add up your scores, which includes a score for how well you did in memorizing the Scripture.

The topics discussed in this course include:

* The Bible: The Word of God
* God's Plan of Salvation
* Water Baptism
* The Holy Spirit
* The Baptism of the Holy Spirit
* Worship and Prayer
* God's Plan for Healing our Bodies
* Witnessing and Winning Souls
* God's Plan for Prosperity
* Israel: God's Chosen People
* The Second Coming of Christ

Much material covered and all backed by Scripture. Only criticism I would give is how the author uses the Scriptures to point that anyone who is baptized with the Holy Spirit should speak in other tongues (See Study 5: The Holy Spirit). He fails to mention or see that not only did the disciples speak in tongues, but they prophesied (See Acts 19:6). Therefore, another confirmation that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit is when you begin to prophesy. The apostles were filled with boldness and began to proclaim the Word of God (See Acts 4:31). I would say this is also a confirmation that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit along with producing the fruit of the Holy Spirit (See Galations 5:22-23 and Matthew 7:15-20). The author focuses too much on the baptism of the Holy Spirit only coming as a manifestation of speaking in tongues. This has been a highly debated topic for ages and I think we just have to accept our brothers and sisters who believe this and not let this cause division. I am saying this as one who does speak in other tongues and I also have prophesied at times and proclaimed the Word with boldness; therefore, I speak as one who has experienced all these manifestations and could easily put myself in the elite group who believe only the ones who speak in tongues are filled with the Holy Spirit.

For me personally, I really needed to take the course on Israel: God's Chosen People. In this day in age where there is much debate as to whether God really has a covenant with the people of Israel. This was very eye opening and you will learn that Jerusalem really is the capital of Israel and that Jesus will come back for 1000 years and rule from Jerusalem and all nations will flock to this city.

Great study and will increase your knowledge and application of the Word of God.

This book is divided into four parts:

Part 1. Foundations
Part 2. Deeper Life
Part 3. Israel: God's Chosen People
Part 4. The Future

The book is set up like a workbook. Each lesson has a theme and a short introduction to that theme. There is also a memory verse to learn for each lesson that is supposed to be learned before moving on to the questions. Fill in the blank questions have bible verses that the reader looks up to answer. At the end of each lesson were the answers to the questions and a section that explains the answers. There is also a scoring scheme for the lessons. There is a progress assessment and review at the end of each Part of the book.

I liked this study because there was not a lot of author talk to read. The way it is set up really encourages readers to crack open the bible and read scripture. While I did not agree with all of the interpretations of scripture, as some of them seemed to be taken out of context, this was still a good study to get you going. Readers who really want to study will find themselves exploring more than just the verses listed to get a deeper understanding of ideas and issues that come up in the lessons. I liked that this could be done alone, too.

I had trouble with the memory verses because a lot of them seemed to start mid sentence and sometimes be taken out of what I considered to be too large and necessary of a context. It did not always seem like the memory scriptures were the best choices for conveying the intended messages and sentiments, so they were not as meaningful to me in relation to the lessons. That made it even more difficult to learn the memory verses. The memory work, as a result, definitely became my stumbling block to progress, and that is why it took me so long to finish this study.

Even if you do not agree with all of the author's interpretations and framing of the scripture, I still think that this is a good study to pick up and one that can be redone and reviewed more than once.
