# Fearless
"I am just like you. But I'm not --- I'm fearless."
It all began in a funky brownstone on Perry Street where Gaia Moore lived with her foster family. But Gaia's little Village was brimming with people hell-bent on her own destruction, and her efforts to stay safe took her from parkside chess tournaments to greasy spoons, from the posh upper east side to scuzzy college dorm rooms. Along the way she managed to pick up a skate rat, a beauty queen, a hottie reformed school nerd, a recovered punk-rocker, and even a Soviet junior detective. None of whom turned out to be what he or she originally seemed...

Now, in one volume, keep pace with Gaia's latest adventures and revisit the origins of her unique story

#25: Lost: "Now that things are insane again,
they're finally back to normal.
Dad's in a coma.
And I'm going out of my mind.
And...
Sam's back from the dead."

Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

Pascal's back with another teen series but this time aiming for something more action-packed but I'm not sure she thoroughly suceeded. We have Gaia--a girl who's struggling for a shot at a normal teenage life since she was born without the fear gene. How this was possible was not explained in this first (and 25th) book in the series. But regardless of the scientific explanation, one thing's certain; Gaia's different genetically different makeup has enabled us to have a black belt, fluency in several languages and an implied high level of intelligence.

But of course not everything comes without a price. Her father's MIA (due to his covert work in the CIA) and her mother's dead--again both important parts of her life that was mentioned and explained in a muddled way.

This features two books in one; with issue # 25 written a bit better. But again too many loose ends of which the author isn't in a hurry to be explaining soon enough. One thoroughly annoying thing for this book series: the differently sized fonts throughout the book slowed down the reading, it could do without those.

The Fearless series is a great young adult series with appeal (i think) for both boys and girls (of course never having been a teenage boy~i can't really say for sure). Although it deals with the feelings of a young woman "born without the fear gene" and all the subsequent doubts and insecurities of dealing with that and the normal growing pains of adolescence it also has a fair amount of adventure and intrigue.
It makes great high interest reading for the "reluctant reader" because it is not difficult but it keeps up a rather frenetic pace, one novel leading into the next with cliffhanger after cliffhanger.
Unfortunately the author originally couldn't keep up with my demand and i moved on to other books. I kept collecting but never picked up the storyline again (i have every intention to~you know what they say about good intentions...)
