Fearlings

Rate this book
We live in a world in which there are many occurrences that we do not understand. Like the quick images in the corner of our eyes when we turn our head or when we think we see shadows in the darkness of a closet or hallway? What if these images and shadows were actually beings from another world bleeding into ours? What if there were humans that could see and interact with these beings? What would their days be like? What would their nights be like? Fearlings is a story of such a human.

Fearlings is a short story that is part ONE in a series titled The Fearlings series.

I am Michael Edward, a husband, a father of six, a friend, and a self-proclaimed storyteller. I say storyteller because to use the word writer would be a misrepresentation, it might imply that I can write. I have always felt that my imagination was my strength and I always see everything as a movie. A lot of times when I write, its like I am sitting in a movie theater watching it on screen and I just write down what I see with the words that I know.

I love to write screenplays and that bleeds into my writing style. Also, I have epilepsy, and my seizures have increased, so if they bleed into the writing I apologize. I just want to tell entertaining stories that give people a chance to escape reality for a bit. I mean no disrespect to writers.

The best way to describe this novella would be silly. There was just something very nonsensical about it.The idea was original enough, the Vauns and their Fearlings, but not adequately fleshed it and hampered by the wooden execution. The present tense narrative in both past and present settings read more like stage directions in a play. Not quite sure if this was horror or dark fantasy, probably more of the latter. Apparently the first in a series, though this was not the strongest introduction. Very quick read, but nothing really special to offer.

I like the idea behind this story. I found the dialogue to be unnatural and slow moving.
This short story has promise, but could use a little work.
I will likely buy the next in the series just yo see where it goes. Hopefully the second book addresses the dialogue and pacing issues for me.

While I loved the overall ideas, I wasn't overly impressed. A lot of it seemed jumbled and rushed, sentences didn't blend well, and it came out choppy. The dialog seems forced and not even close to natural. Hopefully the other two books are better...

There was an interesting concept here, but the book didn't do it for me.

Just terrible. Poorly written and repetitive. If it was by an advanced ESL student then perhaps the standard of English would be okay. An interesting premise, but poorly implemented.
