I may be biased but I think this is pretty good.

This is my debut novel and I’m so excited to finally share it! Harbinger of Justice is the start to an epic dark fantasy trilogy. For fans of Brandon Sanderson and Chris Wooding.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!

A fast moving tale of a threat to the world with more than a dash of horror, the lives of four individuals are pulled into a wider web of intrigue, threat, and the seed of a fanatical revolution that seeks to unleash ancient powers long lost to history. Two younger protagonists pulled from their impoverished life on the streets, and two adult campaigners must unravel the mystery that has taken their fates into the heart of an ancient evil. Their strengths and their flaws, and the impact of their past mistakes present a lively read with well rounded characters, and a world that is different and strange. This is a brisk read, a page turner, and gives us a clash of ideologies and intentions that are not black and white, and a deeply sensitive view of a young girl with an abusive parent, and the conflicts of love and hate that arise from a realistic depiction seldom found in the pages of fantasy, where such relationships are often idealized.

3.5/5 fast paced and action packed. A great fantasy debut from Andrew Watson

I really enjoyed the world build, lore, and the characters. A winning trifecta of awesome with just a dash of lovecraftian horror.

While I really loved this book I do have a couple critiques. The end of the story felt rushed especially the last 15%. There are some flashes back chapters that really only served as backstory dumps and would have worked better worked into the present timeline of the story. I also felt at times the story took president over the characters and sometimes they would act in a way counter to their characterization but progresses the story or offers a cool action sequence. Still overall a great debut. I expect book 2 will be even better.

I knew from the Prologue I was going to like this book. I kept that feeling through most of the book (there was one patch where one of the main characters was making bad decisions) and as I neared the end of the book, I didn't want it to be over. Now I have to wait months for the next book.

It had a fast moving plot but still took time to develop the characters and did it without derailing the pacing. This is not Grimdark but it is Grimdark adjacent. It is not Horror but it is definitely Horror adjacent. Lots of things that creep in the shadows and go "bang" in the night. The magic system is creepy too (shadow magic .) But there are great friendships! Found family! Animal companions!

I may have read a few fantasy debuts over the years since I fell for this genre, and it isn’t always smooth sailing, though, in his instance, it absolutely was. If you took Andrea Stewart, Chris Wooding, John Gwynne, and C.L. Clark and created a product of their respective styles, you will land on Andrew Watson, a promising new writer not to be missed. His self-published new novel Harbinger of Justice, the first in the Shadowbinder’s series, is filled with compelling scenes, interesting new takes on magic, and wondrous world-building.

Here is what you will find when reading Harbinger of Justice

Flawed characters, light and dark, shadow magic, and blood magic.

A well-imagined world with an Egyptian-inspired flair of sands and a daring underworld and torment realms.

Friendships, heists, discoveries, rebellion.

Great scene formations and landscape terrain changes, from markets and palaces to dunes and caves and more.

Myth mystery and interesting beings like phantoms, sand serpents, ayas, husks, ancient gods, and goats!!!

Fast-moving plot and some hair-raising moments.

“Don’t be foolish. What do you owe them? They didn’t come back for you. They left you to die,'‘ the shade said. “

Nya has lived on the streets with the Sand Rats for the longest time till she finds a little attic room in exchange for helping a spice merchant set up a market stand every morning. She takes care of her ailing mother, and unlike the amazing mother we find in Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga, Orka, hers is demeaning and foul, despite Nya taking care of her after her dad’s passing.

“You know, if it weren’t for you, we would be eating like kings right now, “ Mother said between bites.

“We could have lived in the palace,” Mother said reverently. “You stole our happy life. Our life of luxury and security.”

And so Nya continues to do her best till she finds herself arrested after a heist gone wrong with the Sand Rats, and is forced to take part in a secret project that would gain her freedom and ensure her mother’s well-being. Where it will take her is unimaginable!

Rai is a mercenary and with his snarky shade Fox, finds himself in a peculiar situation after he kills a merchant on one of his missions. As he stumbles into the mystery that the prologue of the book alluded to, his storyline forms as he is thrown into the past and collides with old friends and those recently made enemies - all connected to the darkest secrets of shades and a different realm.

Nya finds herself baited into that same ancient mystery, and Rai isn’t far behind but coming into the story from another angle. Both are equally hair-raising and so well-imagined, it was hard to put the book down at times.

The Egyption-themed world with the rich underworld and myth created by Watson was stellar. There is a scene in an ancient dark library that is so fantastic and reminiscent of dark scenes in Harry Potter, it was truly captivating and visually stunning as I imagined the plot unfolding with a raised pulse.

Bone-like spikes wrapped around a grey membranous head unset with two glowing red eyes. The silverwater ran off it as the god rose. Ma-atan The Harbiner of Justice. The Wheiger of Souls.

The ending, oh the ending!!!

So well done and a great gateway into the next novel.

As I had mentioned, there are possible traces of the influence of the authors above that could be found in this wholesome fantasy. The shades in Harbinger of Justice are like the conversing companions found in Stewart’s The Drowning Empire. Rai and his shade Fox make a great team, though overall, there was a much darker pull in the meaning of the shades. Fans of animal companions will enjoy this part of the novel a lot. Then there is my favorite of Gwynne’s characters, Orka, and Nya’s relationship with her mother is explored at several points in the novel. I found it clever that Watson made Nya’s mother the complete opposite of Orka, who is the ultimate mother bear. Because I have followed Watson for a while and he recommended Wooding’s The Ember Blade, which I loved as well, is it easy to see how the different bands of friendships and mercenaries embody some of that companionship and banter found in The Darkwater Legacy reflected in this novel. There is this old-fashioned/traditional fantasy vibe that never dies or gets old for me with these ragtag friendships. What made me think of C.L. Clark’s recent novel, The Unbroken, was the influence of the setting and the rebellion/justice of the people in the storyline. Elements of such were found in Harbinger of Justice, though cloaked in an Egyptian-inspired setting and mythology that reached far into the past. These are just my impressions but it can lend a good idea if you have read any of the above mentioned in terms of setting and characters.

Harbinger of Justice is off to an excellent start and I can’t wait to continue the series. If you are interested in reading a bit more about Andrew Watson and his writing process, check out my interview with him on The Fantasy Hive.

This book has a lot going for it, however I was very confused in the beginning and enough happened in this book to take up three books. I don't know if this is from lack of experience or if this is one of those books that's part of a series where people will say, "It's great, but you have to get through the first book." I definitely rec this one for fantasy lovers. The shadow magic was something different and it definitely fit the world. It was also nice to read about a scorching desert while I'm currently burning my own butt off here in North Texas. There are a couple of words in here that don't mean what the author seems to think they mean (i.e. lathering), but that didn't ruin the book for me. It was just really jumbled and busy, so a solid three stars.

Thank you to Andrew Watson for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

Harbinger of Justice, the first in the Shadowbinder series by Andrew Watson, is set in an Egyptian-inspired World that follows Rai - a mysterious mercenary, and Nya - a young girl trying to survive. As things progress, we are thrust into a world as well-described as anything I've ever read.

Upon the black sands and beneath the ever-watching eyes, a tale of shadow magic and ancient mysteries unfold in this new dark epic fantasy series. For fans of Brandon Sanderson and Chris Wooding.
In the desert city of Yontar, Nya cares for her sick mother. But when Nya is arrested, her mother’s death is all but certain unless Nya joins a secret project that promises her freedom. If she survives.
Rai, a mercenary, has a shadow dark enough for two. In his quest to discover the nature of the creature living in his shadow, Rai collides with old friends and new enemies, stumbling into an ancient mystery that could mean the end of the world as they know it.
All the while, a darkness stirs and rebellion threatens, helmed by a man who promises justice will reign.

Andrew really excels in how he describes the world he has set out to create. The architecture and elements that have been described add such well-layered construction to this world. There's a feeling of organic exploration and that's been what has made this stand out so far. The magic itself is unique with the shadow-based structures. I can feel a lot more exploration surrounding this in the later books because that fascinated me.

The characters are full of trauma and empathy and Andrew has written these well. As much as Andrew dove into the world, I'd have liked more side-character background to help deal with motivations and this feeling of the world that has been created. The pacing itself was lacking where certain points felt like they could have been extended but others felt too long. The enjoyment was still there, and I can't wait for more in the Shadowbinder series.

I recommend giving this a try. A strong debut full of magic and mystery that brings something new to the genre.

Meanwhile, you should read this book.

A few more words, finally.

Andrew Watson’s debut novel, Harbinger of Justice, is an impressive work of dark epic fantasy. The story is set in a fascinating Egypt-inspired world, where strange things happen and ancient mysteries unfold.

Two things I liked the most: the overall compelling character work and the mind-blowing ending.

Rai, my favorite character, is a mercenary with a shadow... different and darker than usual.
His abilities are intriguing, and I’m sure readers will be eager to discover more about them.

The book is also an interesting coming-of-age story for the character of Nya, a street rat with a traumatic upbringing.
Her journey from a life of poverty to one of adventure and danger is compelling. However, I struggled to fully connect with her on an emotional level and at times I found myself craving for Rai's POV.
On a side note, Kit (Nya's best friend) is a mystery to me. I won't spoil his character arc but to me he seemed to be two completely different people: the one we meet in the beginning of the story is REALLY different from the one who follows Nya. But, amazingly, he's the one that has the most interesting twist at the end of the story! I can't wait to see what will happen to him in book two.

Which is a great segway to say that Harbinger of Justice is clearly the beginning of a much more vast and expansive story. The world-building is excellent, and the author has created a rich and immersive world that left me craving for more.

Overall, Harbinger of Justice is a must-read for fans of dark epic fantasy. The writing style is accessible, and the pacing is good. The book is a page-turner that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.
The amazing cover by Felix Ortiz is just the icing on the cake.

Harbinger of Justice by Andrew Watson is an amazing debut novel that deserves all the praise it gets. The world-building in this book is absolutely phenomenal. Watson has created a captivating world filled with ancient Gods, mysterious cities, lost knowledge, and even a day-night sand dynamic cycle that adds an amazing touch to the worldbuilding. It's on par with the world-building of many top fantasy authors, no doubt about it.

The story is told from multiple points of view, and let me tell you, each character is flawed yet lovable in their own way. I found myself attached to every main character and LOVED the side characters.

One of the things I loved about this book is the presence of multiple magic systems. There's a shadow-based system and a blood-dagger magic system, both of which are intriguing and shrouded in mystery. Watson provides enough information to keep you hooked but leaves plenty of room for your imagination to wander.

Another aspect that impressed me was the inclusion of unique creatures in the world. These creatures play a significant role in moving the plot forward, which is something I often miss in other fantasy books. But in Harbinger of Justice, it's flawlessly executed. I want my own personal Aya SOO BAD NOW!

The dialogue in this book gives it a cinematic feel. It's like watching an action-packed movie unfold before your eyes. The pacing is fast, and there are plenty of thrilling fight scenes with magic systems in play. Andrew Watson isn't afraid to shake things up by killing off some characters, which only adds to the excitement and makes me eagerly anticipate the next book in the series.

If I had one wish, it would be for more scenes in that "other place." Those passages were absolutely captivating, and I couldn’t get enough of them. Hopefully more in book 2??

In summary, Harbinger of Justice is an incredible debut novel that showcases Andrew Watson's talent for world-building, lovable characters, and gripping storytelling. If you're a fan of fast-paced fantasy with intriguing magic systems, this book is a must-read. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment in this promising series.

Thanks for providing me with an ARC for an honest review :))

What a dark and twisting tale!
Amazing world building, the history and lore is so well thought out and the scenes are so vivid!
I absolutely loved the characters. There are none who are unredeemable, even when you think they are evil...all is not lost. I love that about this story and writing, it's dark but the light shines through. Of course I love Dust best of all but Rai and Fax are a close second.
I'm so excited to dive into book two, The Black Mantle. There are so many more questions to be answered!

This is a reread for me and I fully enjoyed it just as much as the first time! Highly recommend!

Incredible fresh world building, very lovely and easy to read writing and nice characters. Intriguing plot, good sense of mystery, maybe not the most adult or deep interesting plot, but the other elements of the book were fantastic, will be continuing with the series

“Life tends to tear away those you love when you aren’t looking” - Harbinger of Justice

First off I’d like to give a huge thank you to Andrew for sending me this book. I’m so proud of him and the great story he created!

Andrew has made some great characters here! Nya is our main pov out of many and she only lives to find her next meal and care for her sick mother. She ends up befriending Kit, who becomes my favorite character in the book. He’s so loyal and I loved his devotion to always being on Nya’s side no matter what. She doesn’t realize how good a friend she’s got in him.

Another great pair was Rai and Fax. Rai is a grumpy man with a large chip on his shoulder and Fax is his snarky shadowing reminding him to eat that chip. Their banter was great and I loved every page they were on. Fax serves as some fun comic relief and I’m looking forward to more of their smartass behavior.

While I was reading HoJi kept being reminded of Sanderson. Not in the worldbuilding sense but the characters. Nya and Rai gave me Kelsier and Vin vibes. It was not unwelcomed! I loved the feeling! Also Lem who is a minor character really reminded me of Wit and became another favorite of mine.

The ending to this one was quite the heart pounder. Lots of action and some emotional moments that had me almost throwing hands.

This book has a lot going for it in terms of worldbuilding and setting. I really enjoyed the desert climate and those Egyptian elements spread throughout the story. I’m always more interested whenever the gods have a larger role to play. The animals are also very creative and add to that worldbuilding creativity. I loved the aya and Dust! I hope that there will be more fun desert animals to discover in future books!

There’s a lot of potential here for more worldbuilding and I’m really excited to know what’s going to happen in book 2. There so much left unsaid and lots of mystery surrounding many of the characters. I’m very interested to know where they’re going to end up! This is a wonderful debut and if you’re looking for some heartwarming animal companions, soft magic, and otherworldly elements this one might be for you.

4.25 ⭐️

This book was great, fast paced, action packed and with great characters! Plus an animal companion who in my brain was a proper little cutie! Its really hard to believe this is a debut novel as it felt very polished and well crafted! Loved the world building and the setting, I’m a sucker for Ancient Egypt and this gave me that feeling to the max. The magic was so interesting and I really cant wait to see how it moves forward in following books. It really had everything, heart pounding action, intrigue and heart breaking gut punches followed up by some of the best humour I’ve read in any book! Would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Plus Fax! Love Fax

I met Andrew a couple of years ago via his YouTube channel. He was funny and geekish about books and always made me laugh. Then he announced that he was writing a book and would be releasing it in a year or so. He gave some for free, and I downloaded my copy and sent it to my Kindle.

Entering Andrew's world was as simple as breathing. That fantasy vibe that feels like you are coming home was felt from the first chapters. I knew it would be funny, because most of Andrew's videos are, and I knew it would be an easy read, but I didn't expect to fly through it in 2 days (it has 450+ pages).

The shadow magic was a nice touch and something I haven't read so far. Also, the locations and how people lived in harmony with the sand were smartly done, especially with the magical creatures (bathing with aya's tongue).

All in all, this was a good first book (for someone who is a self-published author), and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Andrew Watson has vaulted into the fantasy scene and landed his debut with all the skill of a seasoned storyteller. It speaks a great deal for Andrew’s intuitive sense of pace that I became swept up in the story and ended up binging this book in three sittings. Factor in an inventive magic system, set atop a richly-built world, and populated with unique, complex characters, and you’re in for a good time. Being a debut, there are a few points where the machine goes clunk, but overall these moments did not impede my enjoyment of this great novel.

ARC Review ~ Harbinger of Justice ~

*******************************************

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was drawn in by Shadow magic and Ancient mysteries and Harbinger of Justice did not disappoint (and I finished the eARC just in time as it comes out Today!)

The book follows young Nya with the weight of the world and unyielding guilt on her shoulders and Rai, a grumpy mercenary who has the skill to kill but the drive to protect. The chapters alternate between their respective journeys from their POVs, picking up others along the way as their journeys meet.

The pacing and structure of the plot is done so well, the book was hard to put down as I was always wanting to know what happened next. The characters are dynamic and it’s amazing to see how each character deals with the struggles of trying to survive in a hardened world and how their journey changes them for better or worse.

The world building is probably my favorite part. The magical systems are intriguing. Shades are as much a side character as they are part of the magic (and I want one). The creatures of the world are interesting, some endearing while others are dark and dangerous (i want an aya and sand fox too). Though the plot wrapped up so well, there are so many little details about the world that left me wanting more of Tarris!

I have so many questions about the world and what’s to come for the characters I cannot wait for the next book in the Shadowbinders Trilogy!

Talk about a well written debut novel! It read so smooth i couldn't put it down even if i wanted to. 🙌🏻

Multiple POV'S? Great worldbuilding?Ancient mysteries? Dark dangerous creatures? Shadow magic AND a cute pet?
Count me in! 🤩

I was immediately teleported to Yontar (the hot wheather over here made me feel like i was walking upon the black sands myself) and i wish i didn't need to leave it, but now i will patiently wait for book two. 😌 But not to patient because i need some answers about the dark place Andrew!

Harbinger of Justice.

With every debut novel I was tentative going into this. After reading the synopsis and finding the premise of an Egyptian based fantasy book intriguing I dived in head first.

Flawed characters are my weak spot, flawed characters that are wrote well. I will eat them up all day long. Rai and Nya are that, flawed to the core. Character development was rife through the book he it positive or negative no action felt forced or out of character.

World building excellent. Just as you thought the world building was being out done by the plot or the characters another layer was added, and then another and another. Each layer bringing a new and interesting part of the world into focus and showing you the vast difference within their world that mirror our lack of understanding when it comes to the ancient Egyptians.

The backbone, and the reason I will come back to this series again and again is the fast paced plot. As it moves on at a lightning speed you are never felt rushed to read but your heart rate is up and you are at the edge of your seat trying to anticipate where the twist and turns are coming from. Yet with each twist the plot steps up another gear and you are brought alone mesmerised and wanting to know what happens next.

A solid 5/5 for this book and I cannot wait to read it again and again whilst the second book is being wrote.

To think there was a time where I hadn’t read any independently published books 🤯

This really is a great example of what is on offer in the world of indie books- from rich world building to some truly great characters, it's all wrapped up with a plot that has all the beginnings of a great series... a really solid debut from Andrew Watson that has made me instantly want the sequel!

The book is packed with amazing characters. Each one has a really intriguing backstory that gives depth to both the character and the plot.
Of course there were some standouts - Dust! (Actually I think I have to include Lem too 😂).

I love it when writers make the bad guys as intriguing as the good guys.
Watson's baddies include fanatic shadow wielding lunatics and truly horrifying gods who set the book up for an unpredicatable ending... the antagonists kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, guessing (and failing to predict) what was coming next. I won't say any more but it's a brutal conclusion to book one!

Very much looking forward to reading the sequel when it’s released. I have so many questions and I need answers!

This is a fantastic debut by Andrew Watson. The desert, ancient Egyptian vibes, the connections and mysteries surrounding the world’s ancient past and deities, shadow realms and shades: they were all crafted together beautifully to constantly leave me wanting to learn more.

I think my favorite part of this book was the characters and the found-family trope that connected them all. I was instantly invested in and curious about Rai. Nya took a little longer, but in the scheme of the book, I quickly fell into her arc as well. Dust is a great animal companion. I wish we had gotten Kit earlier in the book, but he was another well-rounded character who fit the group well. Lastly, Kyan. I really enjoyed the raw human emotions behind his character. I found myself wanting to root against him but simultaneously relating to his feelings, and I couldn’t argue with his mindset in certain instances. It was well done.

Back to the world-building, it was phenomenal! There’s probably more mystery to it than answers by the end of book one, but with what we were given, I trust the author to satisfy my thirst to learn more before the series is completed. Tell me more about the ancient, advanced civilization that fell. Who are these gods…or monsters? What’s the deal with the shades? And the tunnel people! Something is up with them. I think I might have part of that figured out…maybe?

If there was one thing to knock for me, it would be that quite a few characters were introduced that eventually fell away from the story. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it is a series, and I’m sure we’ll get more storylines with at least some of them. But it threw me a little for a loop early on, questioning who the more prominent characters of the story were actually going to be. And that may have been by design, as it didn’t hinder the story in any way, and again, I think the author has further plans for many of them.

All in all, it’s an easy 5/5 for me. If you want to explore a fast-paced story with a unique desert scene, and hidden temples and mysteries around every corner, don’t miss out on this one. It’s a top-of-the-line debut from an author I expect will be sticking around for a while.

Harbinger of Justice is an impressive debut novel and entry into the Shadowbinder trilogy by Andrew Watson. I’ve put off this book for way too long and I’m so glad that I’ve finally read it. Harbinger of Justice was an extremely imaginative, dark fantasy epic that felt new and fresh.

There are two main protagonists that we follow for the majority of the book: Rai, a hired mercenary with a dark, powerful companion, and Nya, a street urchin looking to care for her abusive mother. Watson does a fantastic job balancing the story between those two main points of view (POVs), creating a tension that forced me, as a reader, to keep reading because I wanted to know what was happening in the other person’s story as we bounced from POV to POV.

Watson has created a unique concoction with Harbinger of Justice. There are Egyptian vibes throughout the book, injected with the mysterious worldbuilding of Stranger Things and some comic relief a la Nightblood from Sanderson’s Cosmere. This sounds like an odd mix that may not land well, but it goes to demonstrate Watson’s ability as a storyteller, because it worked perfectly.

There is deep worldbuilding throughout, some of which we’ve started to explore and much of which is only hinted at for future books in this series. While the story wasn’t overly complex, the character work and fascinating worldbuilding made the book fly by and feel like we were moving at breakneck pace.

This was Andrew’s first book, and there were some tells of that with some of the wording and phrasing. But again, this was an exceptionally strong debut novel. I’ll be starting his prequel novella, Silence of Silver, this evening and will be eagerly anticipating the next book in the series: The Black Mantle.

Harbinger of Justice delves into sandy Tarris, through the mysterious Dark Place, emerging with the reader’s beating heart in its bloody grasp, begging for more.

I’m pleasantly surprised by this fast paced and action packed debut novel. Watson does an amazing job at building a believable world that feels way bigger then what is mentioned in this book. There is lots of potential for future stories.

Some of the fantastical elements were original and well executed. The snarky humour is just perfect and got a few chuckles from me.

The characters are layered and I got really emotional invested in some.

Harbringer of Justice is the first novel in the Shadowbinders series, as well as Watson's debut. We follow our two main characters, Nya and Rai, through a world of ancient mysteries and shadow magic. Nya is a thief who struggles to care for her sick mother. Rai is a mercenary with a secret in the form of a companion that lives in his shadow. Both of these characters deal with great mental turmoil and guilt. This is presented in a realistic and complex way by their actions and inner thoughts. Side characters are also fleshed-out and have unique personalities. Even the shadow companions have their own identity and focus.

The desert cities and hot climate are described beautifully by the author. Showing how people survive, live, and travel in such a world really brings the setting to life without taking away from the main story. The myths, culture, architecture, creatures, and magic systems are very detailed making it an immersive reading experience. Despite the amount of detail put into the story, it never felt heavy on exposition or felt the need to info dump. When we do learn or see something, it's done very organically.

As our characters begin their respective journeys and learn about the magical secrets and powers in the world, hidden dangers begin to reveal themselves. As the characters learn the magic systems and other mysterious, it feels as if we are learning right with them. It's a fast-paced story with great action and magic sequences, but it never feels rushed. Some of the flashbacks scenes could have been handled better to be less intrusive, but overall the pacing of the novel was excellent. We spend the right amount of time learning about each character and going through each scene.

The character development was exceptional. I found the plot a bit dry at parts but overall an amazing debut novel and start to a trilogy.
