Read this with my sons and it was a quick and interesting read. On one hand, it shows that our typical representation of Rome (and history) isn't so black-and-white as to compartmentalize for entertainment value, but on the other hand, it wasn't an in-depth look that could allow this to become a quotable resource. Considering the series, I think it accomplishes what it sets out, in sparking interest for any who would want to look further with more material, or just to get a small taste of ancient times. The art helped drive the interstate along.
This book, cleverly created to look weathered and old, shines a light on some parts of Rome that aren’t showed in other children’s books about the time period.
This book covers many subjects. Among them are: a. the living conditions of the average Roman b. the lives of Roman soldiers c. the world of Gladiators d. and the tragedy of Pompeii.
All in all it is an interesting way to put information in a way any reader can understand.
This book, cleverly created to look weathered and old, shines a light on some parts of rome that aren’t showed in other children’s books about the time period. This book covers many subjects: the living conditions of the average Roman in large blocks of flats called insulae, the lives of Roman soldiers, the world of Gladiators, and even the tragedy of Pompeii. All in all it is an interesting way to put information in a way any reader can understand.
Although I would use this book with older children I would also pair it with a book showing the brighter side of Rome. Every civilization has its ups and downs. With the help of this book and other sources you could have a reading group design their own Roman city. Would they have insulae? Where would their senate house go? What about public Baths? Would they build an arena, and have gladiator battles?
Salariya, D., England, V., & Antram, D. (2013). Top 10 worst things about ancient Rome you wouldn’t want to know. Heshan, China: Sandy Creek.
This was a neat picture book that included a few facts about Ancient Rome. The downside is that this book was not super informative; however, for students who have minimal knowledge on this topic, then this book would be helpful as a starting point. In other words, this could be used for building background knowledge before entering into a unit on Ancient Rome.
