I dream of death and warm blood on my hands. I dream of the day I burn the world to the ground. I dream of the day I will finally die.
Running is something my mother taught me to do very well. I never knew why until the night I cause an earthquake and meet Isaiah. My shadow. My protector. My other half. I need him. I need his blood. He is the only one who can keep me hidden from the man who created me. The man who created the monster.
The world is depending on me not to fall in love. But what happens when the temptation becomes too great and falling is my only option? Can I live knowing I will destroy the world because his touch is the only thing keeping me alive? And how can I trust someone as lost as I am?
Sixteen year old Fallon Braeden is on the road with her mother for what seems like her entire life. Traveling from place to place, school to school, but never really understanding why they are on a constant move. Until one day, when the past and all its hidden secrets catches up to them in a dramatic reveal.
Wow, where do I even begin? There is quite a bit happening in Touching Smoke, so much so that I'm not even sure what I should say. I don't want to spoil anything big since I think half the fun of this book was learning alongside the main character Fallon. However, there are some things you should expect including; haunting dreams, a mysterious guy who seems to have a unreasonable and instant connection to Fallon, inexplicable hunger pains, fireball-throwing demons and an ultimate forbidden love story. I made none of that up!
I really enjoyed the writing. It was creative, vivid and rich with details that kept my imagination in over-drive. Airicka Phoenix crafted this story at such a fast paced by keeping the plot in a whirlwind of motion. In the very beginning of the story, I felt like I was stumbling just to keep up with what was happening, not that's a bad thing. It's almost like arriving late to a movie, missing the first half and trying to quickly figure out what’s happening. But I think this was intentionally done since this pretty much describes Fallon’s life. It made me even more interested to see how things would play out for this character. We really do learn along with Fallon and once we discover a few secrets everything started to click into place, making it easier to catch the momentum and enjoy the ride. Now I'd be lying if I said that I understood absolutely everything. There were a lot of unanswered questions leaving the character and the reader equally frustrated. But since this is a planned series, what's the fun in learning everything at once?
I really enjoyed these characters. Fallon is such a stubborn little thing. However, I found her reacting to things the same way I would, which was freaking the hell out, demanding answers and screaming when she couldn't get them. It must be hard to not understand your own life when everyone is always keeping you in the dark for your own protection. A lot of her reactions were very realistic, so she came across as likable. Isaiah would have to be my highlight in this story. What an intoxicating force! Protective, fierce and loyal. Their love story has a remarkable twist that is warped with danger and need. But it's also laced with doubts for both the characters and the readers. The rest of the cast played their part well. I hated Garrison and his mutated goons, but I couldn't help but be fascinated with the things he's done.
Bottom line, I really enjoyed this one. I thought this was incredibly consuming and intriguing all the way through. I liked Phoenix's ideas. The story line was fresh and unique and this left me curious to see what happens next. Touching Smoke is a good start to what looks like a promising series.
Special thanks to Airicka Phoenix for sharing your story.
Thump thump .........thump thump.....thump.....thump thump thump......thump shhhhhhhhhhh You know what that is? That my dear friends is my heart beat! Holy smokes.
Touching smoke defies everything I have read as of late. This book was so flipping intense! I have been hours trying to think of something to compare this book with. Congratulations Airicka Phoenix I can not find anything! This book is definitely a intriguing and unique! Seriously no vampires, no werewolf’s, no fairies. Freakin amazing!!! However, throughout the book we do have supernaturals, ask me where they are come from, ask me how the dog ears you can have a book about supernaturals and not be the usual Vamp, weres, fae, I say you grab this book and read it immediately. Figure that at for yourself!
Right when you open the book, you start out with Fallon and her mother, driving around everywhere. Only staying in run down motels. Fallon was not the typical child. She is now close to 17 and never stayed in one school for more than 6 months. Always on the run. So that’s what you get in the first couple of pages. Base line I guess you would call it! Then BAM you are thrown into action, fear, powerfulness. I mean mega WHOA! Little farther into the story, the Author throws in the mysterious, hunky, ravishing “Isaiah”. They are MADE for each other literally and that is all I am saying.
You want a book to drive you crazy, on the edge of your seat with anticipation. You want a book with romance, originality, secrets, humor, danger and raw emotion. You better run get your copy now, why it is only $2.99. If they right person gets a hold of the read. Look out people this might just turn into market price!
Airicka Phoenix congratulations to you on a very awesome new debut book. You better believe I will be one of the first to get my hands on your next book! P.S I flipping love the cover! One of my favorite books for 2012!!!!!!!
Fallon is just an average girl who travels with her mother in thier old Impala. Sure it's not a typical life for a young girl of 16, but she loves it and loves being with her mother. Every so often they stick around somewhere long enough so her mother can get a little bit of traveling cash. And during that time, her mom puts Fallon up in some prestigious private school with the money her dad left her when he died. Fallon was just a little girl when it happened so she doesn’t know much about him.
One day everything changes when her mother runs a mysterious motorcyclist off the road. Something deep inside her mourns for this man that she has never even met. And soon life becomes increasingly weirder; earthquakes happen, men who can throw fireballs emerge, and Mr. Motorcycle is there at every turn. What’s next for Fallon? Who are these strangers seeking her out? And who will she trust at her lowest point?
Man o’ man, this book was packed full of action at every turn. I was drinking in everything this book had to offer: the romance, the action, the plot. Loved it all! Like Fallon thought at one time in the story, I assumed I had another vampire story in my hands. But I was way off. Airicka Phoenix gives us a great story full of everything a good book should contain and I am now hooked on this author.
I just adored these young characters too. I loved Isaiah and his fierce need to protect Fallon. Fallon was a great character as well. She had this strong need to protect Isaiah just as much. From the start of the book we watch her grow from an awkward girl…into a strong young woman. She faces chaos and loss and comes out kicking. Even when all the cards of their future are laid out before them (and it’s not looking good)…I am still holding out hope for these two. I look forward to the next book in the series, praying I am right, praying they get a happy ending.
If you are a YA romance junky like me, Touching Smoke is just what you are looking for. Enjoy a little fighting action to keep your interest? Touching Smoke has that too. Fans of Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Power’s series will absolutely fall for Touching Smoke.
Swoonworthy line…. “What am I?” I whispered, my eyelids already drooping in the promises of sleep. If at any point I doubted that he felt half of what I felt, he pressed his lips to my ear, and whispered, “Mine. Always.”
I love nothing more than getting to the end of a book and being completely certain that what you've just read will be something that you will read again and again!! Simply because you completely loved it from start to finish and it was so good you didn't want to put it down. That is exactly how I feel about Touching Smoke!!
Fallon and her mum spend their days travelling from place to place never really staying in one spot for too long, only long enough for Fallon's mum to work to save enough money for them to move on the their next destination. During those short periods Fallon is placed in boarding school. It's at her latest boarding school that Fallon meets Isaiah and the reasons for her and her mum's constant travel becomes dangerously clear!!
The author gives us a whole new take on the paranormal and I was honestly left guessing as to what exactly Fallon and Isaiah were. Just when I thought I had things figured out it turns out I was completely wrong!! The action starts almost immediately and continues throughout the book. And there is definitely never a dull moment!!
The characters are all fantastic. Even the ones who are so wicked and twisted that you can't help but want then to be dealt some of their own medicine.
Now some people might say that I fall in love with book characters too easily. And if we're being completely honest, to say that my list of book boyfriends is long would be a massive understatement!! But, I have a lot of love to give and my heart is big enough that they all hold a really special place in it. So what harm is there in adding one more right? What's that you say? No harm at all!!! Glad to see that you agree with me, because I couldn't not add Isaiah to that list of book crushes... He loves Fallon with such intensity!! His NEED to protect her and care for her was beautiful.
“What am I?” I whispered, my eyelids already drooping in the promises of sleep. If at any point I doubted that he felt half of what I felt, he pressed his lips to my ear, and whispered, “Mine. Always.”
*Sigh* Tell me, who wouldn't fall in love with that!! At one stage Fallon says "He was a walking symphony of predatory magnetism"... Yep, I'm hooked!! And Fallon loves him with the same intensity. The same NEED to protect and care for him. I just adore this couple!!
My only complaint is that there is now a whole year to wait for book two in this fantastic new series!! An incredibly huge thank you to Airicka Phoenix for introducing me to Fallon and Isaiah and the whole cast of characters that have gone into making Touching Smoke the awesome read that it is!!
A huge incredible 5 swoon worthy, action packed stars!!
Fallon Braeden has never attended a single school consistently in her life. She has never lived in anything apart from hole-in-the-wall motel rooms. All her belongings fit into one duffel bag. She and her mom had always been drifters, moving from place to place, only stopping long enough to resupply on cash before moving out again.
It all changed one day when Fallon began attending a high-end boarding school. After only one week, a massive earthquake consumed the school. Panic and smoke fought to choke the children fleeing the premises.
Fallon, confused and abandoned, is rescued by a handsome man with superhuman powers. He was the same man who she noticed has been following her mom and her around on a motorcycle. He was the same man whom his mother had run off the road a week before. And there he was, rushing her from the burning, crumbling building, and away from unearthly killers in mad scientist's garb who can throw flames and hover off the ground.
This intense action is only the beginning of Touching Smoke, Airicka Phoenix's debut novel. I can assure you, the rest of the book is just as exciting with several surprises and a few delightfully written action scenes. The entire book is a massive chase with the main characters running from the flame throwing men and several other strange people who work for powerful man called Garrison.
Now, seeing as this is a paranormal romance, I cannot neglect to talk about the relationship between Fallon and her rescuer, Isaiah. Fallon feels a deep attraction to him, and it isn't just because he is frightfully good-looking. He, in turn, feels he must protect her no matter the cost. But, toward the book's end, they both begin to wonder if their love is real. This leaves plenty of room for a sequel.
Vampires and Werewolves are the cliche staple of paranormal romance novels. Touching Smoke defies that cliche. And for that I am very glad. Although the entire book is filled with characters of superhuman abilities, the superhuman aspects do not come from being able to transform into a wolf or sucking blood and living forever. The question is, where do the characters superhuman abilities come from? And how do they impact Fallon and Isaiah's relationship? Well, my friends, you'll have to read the book to find out.
I give this book a 4 out of five stars because there were several plot aspects that I saw coming, but that's just me. And I rarely give five stars to anything. Overall, however, I really did enjoy this book and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for romance with a mixing of action and thrill.
DNF. Honestly, I couldn't even make it past the first few chapters. The main character, Fallon, is a whiny brat that does not seem to have a brain attached to her. Her and her mother have been moving across the country since she was very young, only stopping when they run out of money, and then moving on. Of course it never occurs to her WHY they would be doing this. She completely believes everything her mother tells her about world experiences, yadda yadda. When they do stopover somewhere for a few months, her mother sticks her into fortified private schools only, but of course she never wonders about that either. She also doesn't wonder about the dreams she has been having for the past six months. She is scared of them, and wishes they would stop interrupting her sleep, but her brainpower doesn't seem to extend to using logic to figure out the whole situation.
Very early on, as Fallon and her mother are driving down the highway she spots a motercycle trailing them. She feels this weird pull towards the motercyclist, and is sure she had seen him before in one of the previous places they had bbeen. That does not seem weird to her, nor does it seem overly weird that her sweet calm mother would slam on the gas, run the motercyclist off the road, and then manhandle her back into the front seat to keep her from checking on him.
She also experiences some weird sort of OMG HE"S DEAD NOOOO MY SOULD HAS DIED...thing when the motercycle whipes out into a ditch. She does't think about that, oh no, she just throws this screaming, crying, beating her fists against the window tantrum.
I just couldn't take it. I can honestly say I hated Fallon. I don't know why her mother is doing these things, but the fact that Fallon isn't wondering, drives me nuts. She is ditzy and whinny and just totally immature.
Apparently I actually had already read this book in January of this year, the strange thing is that I don't actually remember the story. AT ALL. Which is weird since I've never had this happen to me before. I also found out that this is actually a series (yay!). I guess I have some books to read. Getting on with with the review....
This book wasn't that original that it become a new favorite, but it wasn't that cliché that I gave up 30% into the story. It was an overall decent read. I don't really have any pros and cons to it, since it was nicely edited and the story was well thought out and written. Though I have to comment on the cover: It's GORGEOUS! ^.^
The characters were OK. The hero was good looking as always, nice and protective, but not overwhelmingly so. Fallon was kind of annoying in the beginning since she didn't want to accept that she was what she was and blah blah blah.
I had a HUGE problem with her "so called" mother. She was moody, self righteous and pushy. Her mood swings gave me whiplash. She knowingly hid key facts from her daughter claiming it was for her protection. Well you know what? In the end it all came out and it did no one any good not knowing what was happening. So word of advice: keep no secrets from your children, it'll just piss them off in the future when they find out because they always find out EVENTUALLY. That just killed my respect for this sorry excuse of a mother.
Favorite Quotes:
"Yeah, sure, why not. I've always wanted to be brainwashed into a zombie".
"People who claim to be normal are the biggest bunch of freaks I know".
"Don't you dare pee on my leg and tell me it's raining, Isaiah".
I have to confess, I knew the author before I read Touching Smoke. Airicka is amazing. She's sweet, smart, witty, thoughtful, selfless and a person everyone wants in their "friend" column. With that said, I started her book wanting to like it. It turns out Touching Smoke was a FABULOUS read and within two pages, I forgot I was reading a friend's book and was totally immersed in the story!
It was original, cleverly written, the plot was deeply layered, and the characters were a joy to read. The main character, Fallon was age appropriate, the dialog was natural and the story was beyond original.
Isaiah was swoon-worthy, I loved that his only interest was Fallon's safety, no matter the situation! The idea of soul-mates has always been interesting to me, but the idea of creating a soul-mate, WOW! Just WOW! This is one of those books where you will completely lose yourself in the story and when you're done you'll pick it back up to make sure you didn't miss anything.
Airicka, CONGRATULATIONS on an exceptional Debut novel!!!
My Review Ok, so this review is long overdue because I read this book all in one day about a week ago. For full disclosure, Airicka provided me with a review copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.
Before I launch into details, I have to return to the first sentence in this review. I read this book all in one day. That's right, I slurped it up. It was funny and intriguing and sexy all at the same time and I found it a very quick read. To me that is a major selling point of a story. I love when it keeps me turning the pages.
Now, on to details.
Fallon - I really love Fallon. She's very tough, given the difficult upbringing she's had...always being dragged from place to place after only a few months. Her life has made her a natural loner, though there are other things beneath the surface that she senses, but doesn't totally understand. I fell for Fallon pretty immediately and enjoyed her honest, eyes-wide-open view of her world.
Isaiah - I REALLY love Isaiah. But what's not to love? Dark hair, stormy blue eyes, black ensemble and a motorcycle. I'm way too chicken to ride a motorcycle in real life, but in Touching Smoke, I vote YES!
I've read a lot of stories that have great sensual/sexual/love tension in them, but Ms. Phoenix has done this VERY well done with Fallon and Isaiah. You are constantly feeling the magnetism that Fallon feels. But then, I have a soft heart for the older, wiser guy so maybe I'm prejudiced. (Somewhat older, not creepy older peeps!)
Supernatural/Fantasy Aspects I really enjoyed learning about the source of Isaiah and Fallon's powers (though Fallon really hasn't come into her own yet). I have a huge loyalty to science-fiction and like it when someone explains fantastical seeming things with a dash of science. Even if it's not plausible or intended to be, it makes me happy. Just throw words like "genome" around amid your supernatural heroes and villains and it's a hit as far as I'm concerned. I also liked the (somewhat) scientific explanation for Fallon and Isaiah's connection...and the way that this bombshell affects them.
The only reason I didn't give this five stars was some personal preferences. The villains (particularly Maia) were super-villainy in that they seemed to have no other meat to them besides evil. Later you learn more about Garrison, but it's still a little confusing and Maia is always a hard-core b****, but you don't know why. Sometimes I like backstory on villains almost more than I do heroes, but that's a preference, like I said. And I CAN accept a straight up bad guy/gal. I also found the connection to the girl in Fallon's dreams, Amalie, confusing...but that is definitely going to be more of the core of the next book so I can wait to "get" all of that.
I highly recommend this as a fun, creative, action-packed and yummy read!
This line captured my attention right away: For sixteen-year-old FALLON BRAEDEN, being on the run had always been a mystery, until the day she starts an earthquake and everything falls apart. Well, as you can see, one must learn more. A sixteen-year-old girl causing earthquakes? My question was: why would a young girl start an earthquake, there seem to be very little benefits from such a disaster. I got out my kindle and set course for a new adventure that promised many things; suspense, fear...excitement. I read Touching Smoke in one sitting; I simply couldn't put it down!
This book was Awesome! Just when I thought I had it figured out...Boom! The story rounded another corner. Heart and body filled with excitement, I hugged that curve and followed it through. The plot, the characters and even the villains, none of them held a straight road, from back stories to plans to their at-this-moment actions, nothing was predictable. I loved it!
Quickly, I found myself linking with Fallon, we seem to share the same sense of humor. My favorite line: "Great! I'm defective." I almost dropped my Kindle i was laughing so hard. I can across this line and said "That sounds like something I would have said." Let's not forget the hottie that greatly added to this page-turning journey. He turned out to be just as surprising as the rest of the story.
I am afraid to say much more, for fear; I will give something away and ruin the surprise for you. In conclusion, this was wonderfully written and pieced together nicely. Airicka Phoenix, Kudos! Touching Smoke was a fun to read. Thank you for allowing, us the readers, to be a part of your world. I can't wait to join Fallon, and the others, in the next book, Touching Fire!
What would you do if you found that your whole life is one big lie that you haven't been qued in on? And your mother seems to always be hiding something moving place to place transferring you from school to school. Well that was the day and life of Fallon. I cannot say that the lead character in Touching Smoke lead a "normal" life by any means. Her mother was hell bent on using the money Fallons father left her for her schooling only and never herself. So whenever Fallons mom was running low on funds they would find Fallon a new prestigious school to attend while her mother worked. Fallon doesn't know much about her father other then her mom said he had died and that her eyes are the same color. The only family Fallon is aware of is her mother. Fallon is unique in so many ways her dreams are almost life like to her, she has a monster that lives inside her that she keeps at bay with granola, and there is a mysterious man he mother ran off the road that she cannot stop thinking about feeling that she knows him and feels drawn to him. Airicka Phoenix has the ability to give so many subtle details that one might look over in any other book. But in Airicka writings its those little extras that form an HD type movie in your mind complete with sight, sound, smell while you read. This is a paranormal book taken to an almost realistic level. Its not complete shape changing of characters its all about their genetic make up and a bad man with a god complex. Science today can alter somethings about genetics but could you imagine humans with traits of an animal? Something to think about. I really hope you choose to read this book it is an amazing read.
Fallon is a 16 year old girl that hasn't lived anywhere for very long. Her mother shuffles her from town to town, school to school under the guise of trying to make money. Fallon doesn't understand, she knows that her father left money for her, why won't her mom use it? Why won't her mother tell her anything about her father at all? On the road one night she spots a guy on a motorcycle following them, her mother freaks and causes the biker to hit the ditch, Fallon feels as if her soul has been torn in half. What is going on? Her new school is just like the others, secure and strict. She is only there for a short time when all hell breaks loose, fire, demon creatures that shoot fire, and a rescue by the mysterious biker. Fallon runs to her mother, who immediately packs them up and sets out. There is a confrontation with the biker that leaves Fallon reeling. He knows her mom, her dad is alive, she is in danger. What is going on? When her mother is killed, she will have to trust the biker, Isaiah. They are connected in a way neither one can understand. Throughout the story she will discover who and what she is. This book has a bit of everything, evil scientists, paranormal, gene splicing, human experimentation, past lives, and the ultimate revenge. This is a book you must, must, must read. Kept me glued to the pages until the book was done and I still want more.
It's always difficult to write a review without giving away too many details, but here goes. This story revolves around a young lady who is coming into her "own." As the story unravels for sixteen-year-old Fallon, she discovers that her “own” causes her to: be haunted by a ghost baring a frighteningly familiar resemblance, be hunted by creatures with unusual abilities, and experience a supernatural draw to a handsome stranger. The hero is a strong character. Isaiah's memory has been erased, but that doesn't stop him from being fiercely protective of Fallon. He battles the evil of the world, while caring for Fallon in a way that warmed my heart. The ending of the story is satisfying, and yet it sets up the next story in the series so that the reader can’t wait to read the second installment. Not a simple task for an author, but Airicka Phoenix makes it look easy. Of course I would expect no less from such an excellent writer. The writing was creative, exciting and rich with details that kept me surprised. Airicka Phoenix crafted this fast-paced story expertly and I truly enjoyed reading Touching Smoke. It was a page turner from beginning to end. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
Let’s be honest. Life can be pretty complicated for a 16 year-old girl. Think of all the drama you experienced when you were that age. But wait. For Fallon Braedon, her life is about to be turned inside out and upside down to boot. After she finds herself alone and on the run from crazy people who love chucking fireballs at her head, she winds up with a super-cool, super-sexy guy named Isaiah. Oh, he’s the perfect guy. He has a motorcycle, he breaks countertops with his bare hands and, oh yeah, he can pack a major punch. Together, they unravel the mystery surrounding their existence, their “special” talents, and their origins.
I have been anxiously anticipating reading Touching Smoke for quite a while now. And now that I’m done with the book, I’m salivating, er, excited for more! I read it straight through in one sitting – it was awesome. I loved Isaiah, and Fallon possessed the same killer humor that Airicka Phoenix does: insanely awesome. ☺ I would highly recommend that you go check out this awesomesauce book and put it on your GoodReads TBR list. I LOVED it – and so will you! I promise!
I really like this book. I am pretty picky about YA and usually am very iffy about reading YA Paranormal because sometimes they are just overwritten and too sentimental. This one was really well written and not overly sentimental. There was a lot of emotion to go along with the twists and turns.
Fallon is a very realistic teen with out being over the top bratty or annoying and a very engaging character. Isaiah is brooding and mysterious without coming off as a stalker.
This is a book that any parent can permit their teenager to read without worrying about content and still enjoy themselves as the plot is really well done.
Love, love, love this one!!! Truly a wonderful read and the writing is engaging, drawing me into the lives of the characters. I couldn't resist the need to continue, reading when I should have been sleeping. This story was well worth being tired the next day.
Hmmm, think I will read it again. I highly recommend this story for anyone who enjoys plot twists, realistic characterizations and page turning fun.
Brilliant words. Thank you to Airicka Phoenix for writing this! I look forward to the next story from you. *scampers away to read again*
Being on the run her entire life, Fallon's life was never normal. While at yet another school, everything changes one night when she has to run for her life. Saved by the sexy Isaiah, she knows he holds the secret that she wants/needs to know but the problem is he can't remember.
Fallon got on my nerves a wee-bit but it was still a really good read.
One of the best books I've read in a while, I couldn't put it down till I finish......it got my attention from the beginning, has everything I like, romance, nice and funny dialog, suspense, action and best fiction ever!!
I am honestly not sure why the first time i read this book i have it a 4 star rating when it was so deserving of a five, and i didn't write a review because i didn't really write reviews when i read this the firs time. So here is my chance yay! I chose to re-read this because a) the second one is coming out soon, b) i read this like the same time i was reading another book and i was getting the two confused, i even think the names were similar in both books so it didn't help. So i wanted to re-read this and give it a proper review, and also remind myself what it was all about.
So without further ado song choice....huh...thought something would come to me... i will think about it for a little bit and come back this (if i don't you know why, because i am unbelievably forgetful) i think one song i would pick because this book is in deserving of more than one, anyways one song would be "Little Drop of Poison" by Tom Waits, for some many reasons. And for another song choice to "describe song wise" the relationship between Fallon and Isaiah would be "I Need You Love" By Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding (if you don't know Calvin Harris, he does the same thing as David Guetta and if you don't know him, they write the songs, and do the music while in this case Ellie sings the song ta-da!) So think that is what i chose song wise.
Kay first quick thoughts: It was amazing, from the sarcastic, but hilarious Fallon who is the narrator of the book, to the never-ending action, to the heart-breakingly beautiful romance, to the twist and turns that will have you wondering if you have made a complete circle or if you are in the totally opposite direction than you started at. Its that little treasure you will be glad you stumbled across.
Plot: Like i mentioned in my first thoughts it was never-ending action, and what i mean that is that something is usually always going on, maybe it car chases, or getting new information, or falling in love with the characters. It is a well paced book that will keep you up all hours of the night even if you have read it once before...not speaking from experience or anything, and it will have you craving to finish it because you finally succumbed to sleep, in the morning. I remember the first time i went into this book, my first thoughts were angels, i am not sure, i can't even tell you why i thought that the second time i went into it, i was like this was about angels right? NO, i am just stupid, it is a bit of a mystery for the book, but i will give you that, no its not angels, should that stop you from reading it? GOD no if it does you have some serious problems with obsessions and angels. Again like i already mentioned it is very twisty and turny all from the beginning to the end, when you think you figured it out, you haven't so stop trying Airicka (the author) will get ya every time. EVERY - DAMN - TIME. i mean...no i meant that. (don't get me wrong i LOVE it when that happens but second time around, and my jaw is still dropping because i am thinking, how the hell could i ever forget that? well again mostly me reading books at the same time equals bad decision). The plot will keep you going that is for sure, but this book is amazing all around so it isn't the only reason that you will find yourself drooling all over yourself.
Characters!
I just want to say something, as a reader...and reluntantly admitting this a creative writing minor, there is nothing i love more than first person narrative, i don't know why i love to read or write it but i do, so with that said, one of the biggest things i hold dear when either writing or reading is the voice of any character, but particularly if it is first person narrative, i pay close attention. with that said let me tell you about Fallon and my feelings on her.
Fallon: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER. She had this very strong voice, and character style that couldn't be denied even in the hard times. i loved that she remained true to the type of character she started off with and didn't start to fade away when it seemed like the plot wanted to take over the story, which is by no means a bad thing, just a lot of times it seems when that happens the characters lose that extra somethin' somethin' they started out with. But not Fallon she said true to her strange amazing, self? i guess is the best way to put it. She is that great mixture of strong, but also compassionate, stubborn, she is willing to learn to fight her own battles is something that i love in my MC, its all great having an already kickass character but i want to see them get there, and i think we will be seeing a lot more from Fallon. I can't even describe how much i liked her, if the story ever tried to get a little slow, which for me it never did, Fallon would/could/possibly did? pick the story right back up and kept us going. She was curious and demanding, but i don't blame her. She is scared, again how can you blame her? But through all these times she keeps with her amazing wit usually i don't post quotes but for this book i am, one of a favorite line from Fallon would be:
"You're not some overtly cliche like a vampire or werewolf, are you? Because I have to be honest, I won't be impressed." ... "I think I would have lost all respect for you if you had been." So Fallon? A+++ for me, she makes the book good on her own, just like the plot would have been good all of its own, but together its like bliss, but guess WHAT it gets better! OH yes it does.
Isaiah: Holy Hot Male! First time we meet him, motorcycle, and black leather, if that isn't enough to make you fall in insta-love, nothing would...just kidding! because he is just that amazing that he will win your heart with only with this piercing blue eyes (blues happen to be FAVORITE) then his mysterious air, but protectiveness will. He doesn't offer a lot at the very beginning but its obvious how much he cares for Fallon, and that he would do anything to protect her, and talk about swoon-worthy. He is more than that he is like this mixture of total BA, but also sort of in a very strange way innocent, like i just get that vibe him a lot. Though he is serious a lot he does have his playful moments, and he does say the sweetest things! such as...
"We belong just like everyone else and you, you belong more than anyone else." ... "I know you. You're perfect." SWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN
Villain of book: Equals fan-freaking-astic! i loved him, he was just enough cra-cra for me in a YA book, i mean they all could just take that extra step in all books but this book DID NOT need to take that extra step, this dude was crazier than crazy but also kinda of a genius, so i don't even think i can be mad at him? its a little upsetting how much i almost want to respect the dude.
So the ending, will keep you wanting more, and i believe the second one is due out in jun..uly? anyways if you haven't figured it out, yes i will be reading the second one, probably waiting up until midnight for it to release or whatever just stalk amazon page two days around the release date just pressing refresh, refresh, refresh, refresh i think you get the idea.
Kay here comes the fun part, its when i tell you all about this crazy thing that i do, its called a blog, WHOA WHOA WHOA JUST CALM DOWN, are you calm? good, here first off move on right now if you aren't interested my feelings are not sure, and if they are you don't know me i am just another faceless person is the interweb world. i don't think there's anything more exciting than finding a honest to goodness great young adult novel that has nothing to do with sexuality or finding love. I've read past novels by Airicka Phoenix - i love them because they're just so different from one book to the next. So it's no surprise that i wanted to read her Touch series - only i wasn't expecting it to be so engaging, nor did i know that i was getting into a young adult genre (yeah, it's a big thing with me since i have a tendency of carefully choosing which books i read, mostly to avoid me dnf'ing books).
So yeah, wow. Amazing. I wish i could say that there were parts i didn't like about this book, but i can't. It really made me think of the Percy Jackson novels by Rick Riordan (i promise you, the books were a heck of a lot better than the movie that they flopped on). It had everything i love about young adult genres - adventure, love that is representative of adolescents, realism and the snarkiness that we tend to forget adolescents have (although with my daughter, i can't forget that at all since she's got a sassiness to her that makes me shake my head more often than not).
The added bonus that i got with this book was the paranormal aspects that you're not aware of until at 1/3 into the book and you never do get to know what they are until you get to almost the end. But it's the kind of suspense that makes you more than a little curious to find out what is so special about Fallon and why she finds herself so drawn to Isaiah. I'll admit that i thought that this boy... man?... was at least in his late 20s, early 30s, and thought to myself... 'well then... we have this 16 year old, almost 17 year old attracted to a much older man. Alright. I can get on board. *sees both kiss in a odd sort of way* well hell! I never saw that coming. *thinks a few seconds* wait!??! How old is Isaiah?? This bloke had better be much younger than i think he is!!' horrible thoughts, right??! I can gladly say that it's totally legit! Hooray *cue in the sigh of relief and fan girling*
Yeah. I'm an odd cookie, but i know what i like and Touching Smoke by Airicka Phoenix: totally on my gush worthy list and up there amongst what i like.
Wow, i didnt quite know.what to expect coming into this book, but i love it. I stayed away from most reviews because i wanted to make sure i made up my own mind about Touching Smoke, and I'm so glad i did i am so in love with this book, i was kept on my toes through out, and it led me all over the place unfortunately it leaves off having me wonder what the hell is going to happen next!! Ugh i hate cliffhanger but i am glad i read this one!! A definitely must read!
Fallon has always been on the road never in one place for too long, her and mother against the world! Fallon just went along with it even though she was annoyed at not being able to make friends or get comfortable, all she had with her was a duffle bag, that held her 16 years of life in there. To her knowledge her father was dead and she knew nothing about him!
Isaiah is a oh my sexy as hell man who had been following Fallon and her mother for as long as she can remember. She had always seem him riding around on his bike and he always saluted her. It was there little hi. He was mysterious but she felt a strong pull towards him like she belonged with him, they were always meant to be together. Little did she know that's exactly what they were meant to do, be together. But why?
After her mother passes she is left to the only person that seems to know her and her parents. Isaiah! He was there when her mother died he saw but THEY were still there they had to hurry and get to safe ground. When they got back to grab her stuff he told her to stay in the car, that if she heard anything or he wasn't back in five minutes leave, and he would find her.
"I CAN'T LEAVE YOU."-fallon "I CAN'T DIE AND I WON'T, NOT UNTIL YOU'RE SAFE. SO DO WHAT I TELL YOU! I'M NOT BACK IN FIVE MINUTES, GO."
She was scared but she stayed in the car she didn't know if she could trust him but she couldn't help herself he knew things. Things about her about her parents and she couldn't deny how she was feeling about him..
I WAS MINDLESSLY DRAWN TO HIM, TO HIS HEAT. HIS PRESENCE. HIS SOUL. HIS SCENT.-fallon
I WAS A MOTH CAPTIVATED BY A FLAME. DRAWN. ENCHANTED. ADDICTED.-fallon
She goes with him every where never able to stay in one place for too long because THEY would find them and Isaiah wanted to make sure to keep her safe. She kept questioning him why? Why was he promising to protect her to keep her safe and from who? His only answer...
"BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU."-Isaiah
She started having one of her spells where she needed to eat or she would get migraines and cramp or be in so much pain, he offered himself but what why? He knew what she needed and he gave her willingly...
" YOURS. ALWAYS,"-Isaiah
She learned a lot with him in just those couple days. He seemed to always know what she was thinking and how she felt.
"SOMETIMES WHEN YOUR EMOTIONS ARE AT THERE HIGHEST I CAN...CONNECT WITH YOU," "LIKE WHEN YOU'RE VERY ANGRY, OR SAD, OR HAPPY,I CAN FEEL IT-FEEL YOU. IF THE EMOTION IS STRONG ENOUGH,I CAN SOMETIMES HEAR YOU, TOO."-isiah
How embarrassing when she thought back on how exactly she would feel around him! But she learned about herself not a lot only what he could tell her from what Ashton would tell him.
"HE CREATED THE ULTIMATE WEAPON" "HE CREATED YOU."-isaiah
Garrison the evil mad man behind what was going on with Fallon and Isaiah was after them and would get what he wanted, with the help of a mean fucked up bitch, Maia. A man who could multiply Yuri and many others. He kept them, tried to be nice he felt something towards Fallon but she couldn't quite figure out what until the whole thing came into play. He was a sadistic piece of shit who for Isaiah wanted him to suffer but for Fallon has other plans. And together they were part of a bigger picture. What were they and what did he wan't with them!?!?
I really loved this book and can't wait to read how everything will turn out in the end!!
Fallon isn't your average 16 year old. Her and her mother are constantly moving, never staying in one place too long. She has lived like this for as long as she can remember. Her world changes forever when she's attacked by fire-wielding demons and saved by a gorgeous blue-eyed stranger. Isaiah has spent his life protecting her from afar, now their lives have collided. What follows is a life altering realisation that she is not what she believes.
I was pleasantly surprised by Touching Smoke. I really enjoyed the reading the blurb, so I was more than happy to read it. I am so glad I did. It stands out from the crowd of your usual YA paranormal, having it's own addictive qualities. Strong female heroine? Check. Uber-gorgeous love interest? Check. Mysterious origins? Check. Page turner that will keep you reading into the wee hours? Check. So what exactly makes it stand out? Well I'm glad you asked. Airicka Phoenix has created a world all her own, with our leads on the run from the man who helped create them. They're not like us, and the quest to find out who and what they are is an exciting ride. There's something wild in Fallon that makes her stronger, faster and lusting for blood. Her journey of discovery is heartbreaking and intense. Her life is one lie after another and full of betrayals she never saw coming.
Isaiah's life has been just as tragic, his one goal being her protector. He is fierce in his protectiveness, always making sure she's safe no matter the harm to himself. There's a connection between them that is undeniable and incredibly strong. But is any of what they feel real? Or does it lead back to their creator and what he has planned. Once you find out you'll be just as shocked as they are, but you never do learn what exactly it is. Fallon and Isaiah go out of their way to protect each other, with Fallon finding out just how far she is willing to go to defend him. She's kind of awesome in her fury. I loved reading about each revelation as they were learning it. I hate when books are so easily predictable and Touching Smoke is not one of them. There are so many twists and turns to keep you stuck to the pages.
Touching Smoke is unique and engaging, with an action-packed story line. You're sucked in straight away and spit out at the end, having gone on a roller coaster ride of sheer awesomeness, leaving you breathless and slightly bewildered that's it over . I hate having to wait for the next book is a series, this is going to be a long one. Get yourself a copy now!
**The only problem I had was a few spelling and grammar mistakes, which do not in any way detract from the story.**
Now, where to start? Hmmm... Got this from the author herself. Thank you, Airicka for this copy! :)
Touching Smoke, I know that it's a YA book and a Paranormal one. I've read the blurb when I first encountered it but since my memory is not that good I forgot about the blurb. BUT I somehow know that it's not Vampires. Maybe I was expecting Faeries or something. Boy, I was wrong.
Plot: The plot is something I haven't read. I mostly read paranormal stuffs like Vampires and werewolves, faeries, warlocks, magic, etc. This book is about a girl who was genetically engineered by a madman. She was created. BUT then I thought she really is a vampire. The pace was okay. It's not slow and not fast. Just normal. But still I wish Fallon's mom answered all her questions and explain it to her personally. Even though she wanted to protect Fallon that's why she lie and keeps secret. Honestly, that's kind of irritating. I understand Fallon's feelings about that.
Characters: I don't like Fallon's mom that much. Yes, She's keeping Fallon safe by not telling her anything but seriously that's kind of wrong thinking. What? "what you don't know wouldn't hurt you?" Maybe, but then again, what they have was a life-or-death situation. And I believe Fallon is in the right age to know about herself.
Fallon, hmm... is kind of whiny. Well, okay, I understand where she's coming from but seriously, I just wish she gave an ultimatum or something to her mom so that her she would tell her past. If I'm in her situation, I'm gonna go crazy about not knowing anything. But thankfully, she became, somehow, kick-ass in the latter part of the book.
Isaiah. So freaking mysterious at first. uh... I don't know how to describe him since I'm not really good at that but all I could say is he's superhuman. >_< And he's connected to Fallon, they are 'soulmate' as the book blurb said.
Btw, I keep on remembering Sadie-chan in the anime, One Piece because of Maia. She's like a sadistic bad girl in the book. LOL! And she's always wearing spandex. :D almost like the anime girl. :P
Overall: I liked it, I actually read it in one sitting. If one sitting means the whole day, then Yes. And for me, it's not predictable. I have my own theories while reading it earlier but it doesn't happen. LOL! So good job, Airicka! :) Go and read this book you might be surprised that you'll like it. :)
MY REVIEW I was generously given this kindle book by the author Airicka Phoenix in exchange for my honest opinion and review. Firstly I really would have been drawn to this book by the cover, I like the coloring of the cover as well as the picture and the fact it once you have read the book you realize it depicts Fallen and Isaiah. The cover represents their attraction very well. The cover is one of those that draws you in and makes you want to discover more. The blurb, well yes its a good blurb, but I still have a slight feeling that it doesn't quite do the book the justice it should. Now for the book, wow I loved it. Yes it starts off slowly and then the mystery and suspense climb higher and higher. Wow what can I say, Fallon has always lived a life of moving around with her mother, never staying anywhere for too long. Erin, Fallon's mum has told Fallon that her father is dead, but never seems to want to tell Fallon any details about him at all. Fallon notices that they are being followed my a mystery figure dressed in black riding a motorbike. Hmm it's difficult deciding what to say and what not to say as I really think you should read this book as I did not knowing certain things. So I am leaving out what I would think of as large spoilers! Well spoilers of any sort really. Fallon and Isaiah finally meet and feel immediately drawn to each other. Isaiah also has to keep moving as the "monster" chasing Fallon also wants him too. Who is the monster? ......... What does he want with them?.........How come Isaiah knows Fallons dad? .... Why did Erin let Fallon believe her father was dead? So many questions that will all be answered by reading the book for yourselves! I really got hooked into this story and once again found myself feeling that I couldn't put it down, I had to finish it! So did I enjoy the book? Yes it is a really promising start to what could be a brilliant series Would I recommend the book? Yes, I have recommended to friends already! Would I read more in the series? Yes pleease Would I read more by Airicka Phoenix? Yes!
This book blew me away. It was just...wow. Can I leave my review at that? No? OK I'll try to elaborate a bit :P
Right from the word go we are thrust into this intense and thrilling story. I really wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did. I don't know what I was expecting from the book after reading the blurb but certainly not that. So first off I have to mention something. I am a total science geek. I love anything to do with science ( I am addicted to The Big Bang Theory) even if most of the time I haven't a clue what they're talking about. I am especially fascinated by genetics so the geek in me really enjoyed this book in that sense. It was a really interesting and unique story-line and as the story progressed and more facts were revealed I became more and more engrossed. The characters were really likable Fallon was a great lead. She's sarcastic, witty, strong-willed, and very determined. Having been on the run with her mother for practically most of her life, her life has been far from normal. And it's about to get a lot less so. When she meets the mysterious Isaiah, her life takes a turn for the bizarre. Isaiah I really liked. He's your typical hot. mysterious, savior that always seems to show up when you need him most. But there is so much more to him than meets the eye. He was a great love interest. I loved the story behind these two's attraction to each other. At first it seems like a horrible case of insta-love (which it kind of is) but it is completely justified and so this is one of the rare occasions where I actually loved the insta-love. It is such a heartbreaking story.
The story is packed full of action, suspense, originality, heartbreak, loss, love and so much more. It was exciting, emotional and just fantastic. I really don't know what else I can say except for you have to read this book! Ms Phoenix has a real winner on her hands her. Can't wait to see where the story will take us in book two.
This book was provided free from the author in exchange for honest literary review.
Fallon and her mom Erin had been on a road trip for as long as she could remember. From one dive hotel to another they crisscrossed the country looking for the next adventure. School was a afterthought, only necessary when Erin had to work to replenish the funds to travel again. Suddenly, during one of those educational side trips, everything starts to change. Life as Fallon knows it falls apart and she is now facing the facts that her whole life until this point is lie after fabricated lie. Out of nowhere steps up Isaiah, a sexy man with a motorcycle. Suddenly Fallon finds out that he is her other half, but could also cause her world to come crashing down. Still only a teen she is faced with life or death decisions at every turn Wow what a thrill ride of a novel. The story is intense. While a beautifully written mix of action and romance, it also throws the age old battles of good and evil in there. The characters are believable and definitely likable. Fallon is a vulnerable young lady who still has spunk and a lot of fight in her. It is nice to see a girl who can be badass, yet weak enough to admit she doesn't have all the answers. Isaiah is definitely swoon worthy! What girl doesn't want a man who is perfectly made for her? Not to mention he dresses in leather and drives a motorcycle!!! Bad boy image to the max. The story itself is even unique. I don't think I have ever read one based on sci fi but with a paranormal twist like this. Editing and plot pacing were superb as well. I can't wait for book 2: this a great start to a new series. The bad part is, you have no idea where this series is going because everything is out of the box....so I look forward to reading book 2 as soon as possible. Michelle McQueen Book on the Bright Side Review Panel
Touching Smoke by Airicka Phoenix is a wild ride through young Fallon’s far from normal teenage life. It’s a try-to-catch-your-breath tour through the young heroine’s confusion, danger, exciting curiosities and possibilities.
Being sixteen is tough enough but Fallon isn’t normal and she knows it. Circumstances she doesn’t understand have sent her running with her mother from threats unknown, making any semblance of normalcy impossible. Her life has been this way for as long as she remembers, but while once again on the move, Fallon discovers a strange connection with Isaiah, the handsome motorcycle rider who seems to be mysteriously following her.
Life becomes more and more dangerous and when Fallon finds herself alone in the world, Isaiah vows to protect her at all cost. The breathless pace accelerates, only now author Airicka Phoenix sprinkles in a few answers to the strangeness of Fallon’s world, bit by bit. Nothing about this book or the characters is what the reader expects, but everything fits into the category of splendid, supernatural storytelling! This isn’t a romp, it’s a high-paced race with something exciting at every turn of the page. Fallon is a delightful character, offering comic relief at the right moments and using her teenage angst to create even more complications. Isaiah is everything you want in a hero with the perfect amount of damage, machismo and strength to pull the story along.
It’s difficult to say much more without spoilers so I’ll stop at that.
On the downside, there were several typos and formatting issues in the Kindle copy I received from the author, but none of that will stop me from watching with bated breath for the next book in this captivating and exciting series. I just hope the author gives me time to catch my breath.
This line captured my attention right away: For sixteen-year-old FALLON BRAEDEN, being on the run had always been a mystery, until the day she starts an earthquake and everything falls apart. Well, as you can see, one must learn more. A sixteen-year-old girl causing earthquakes? My question was: why would a young girl start an earthquake, there seems to be very little benefits from such a disaster.
The plot, the characters, and even the villains, none of them held a straight road, from back stories to plans to their at-this-moment actions, nothing was predictable. I loved it!
Quickly, I found myself linking with Fallon, we seem to share the same sense of humor. My favorite line: "Great! I'm defective." I almost dropped my Kindle I was laughing so hard. I came across this line and said "That sounds like something I would have said." Let's not forget the hottie that greatly added to this page-turning journey.
