I read Seb Kirby’s first novel, Take no more over a year ago and I was fairly certain his second book would be written along a similar vein. I was very wrong. The whole theme is completely different. Seb Kirby has created a unique tale of identity theft and body snatching ‘earthlings’ whose own world has been destroyed.
Apart from the first couple of chapters where I was a bit confused before I settled into the story properly, I was soon zipping along and reading the chapters (which are fairly short) at a fast rate. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. I won’t delve into more of the story as many reviewers have already done that. Suffice to say this is an often bizarre story involving conspiracy theories with plenty of thought-provoking ideas thrown in.
Double Bind is an intriguing psychological thriller, with a good dose of science fiction mixed up with good old-fashioned mystery and murder. A highly recommended read and well deserved of the 5 star rating.

Another great mystery/thriller from Seb Kirby. His début novel 'Take No More' was excellent and Double Bind, his newest release, is even better. Tightly written with ever building tension Mr. Kirby asks some very fundamental questions about identity and our 'uniqueness'. It's hard to review without giving away the incredible twists and turns of the novel but I highly recommend this novel. If you haven't yet discovered Mr. Kirby now is an excellent time and I also strongly suggest you try 'Take No More' as well if you're a lover of great mystery/thrillers.

What a fantastical si-fi told as a cautionary tale - I loved it!

This story is fast-paced, extremely well-written and extraordinarily different - one that gripped me from the beginning to the very end.

The problem is that I don't give spoilers, so it isn't easy to say much, however, despite its 'off the wall' feeling, it's believable and the plot is one that you never quite know what will happen next, demonstrating the wonderful talent of this author. It is also thought-provoking and inspiring.

Highly recommended for those who love a fabulous story told with perfection.

Interesting idea, sloppily executed. It couldn't decide whether it was SF, thriller, or noir. It took me about 3/4 of the book to realize my big problem with the "science" of this sci-fi: Anyway, not good enough for a second read.

What I think of Seb Kirby’s Double-Bind

“The guy with the bad attitude has been following me all week.”

Seb Kirby gets right into the story in Double Bind. There’s not a wasted word in this book: no background, no world-building, no nonsense. The writing is spare and clean, active yet evocative, told in first-person present tense, which enhances the action and immediacy.

Take this for an example: “Elmington Drive is a wealthy suburban street. Smart gardens, no parked cars, large houses, most with gravel drives and tall shrubs.”

Because he gives readers credit for knowing something, Kirby is able to painted a picture in a few phrases.

In short, Kirby is a true professional writer of fiction.

The story begins with the narrator, successful author Raymond Bridges, meeting his double at a book signing. The double accuses Bridges of stealing his face and identity — and his pen name. Soon, Bridges finds himself in a new body, victim of spreading ripples of identities displaced into new bodies. Double Bind is a science-fiction story presented like a mystery — not an easy assignment for any writer. Kirby has the skill to pull it off.

Kirby makes it all make sense by explaining the process and the science through the characters’ actions. Bridges, who becomes Erin Pascoe (that’s a man’s name in the UK, apparently) gradually learns the details, like one of Raymond Chandler’s detectives.

Kirby makes his characters real through their words and actions more than through verbose descriptions. Bridges is actually not that likeable. He’s a liar, an imposter, someone more than willing to take shortcuts to get what he wants, no matter what they do to others.
Victoria Bletchley, Bridge’s love interest, is one of the most desirable and admirable women I’ve read in fiction lately. An English professor, she’s a long-legged looker, too. She loves “rutting” and reading, more or less in that order, and she’s smart. Even for an English professor.

Here’s my favourite passage featuring Victoria:

Strang [a cop] is sounding impatient ... “Pascoe is a suspect in at least one, possibly two, murders. Keep stalling like this and you’ll leave me with no option but to take you in for obstruction of justice. That’s if I don’t arrest you as an accomplice to murder.”
I’m wondering how Victoria is going to get out of this when she uses her contextualizing skills to great effect. “OK. I do porn. Looks like I’m well off, but this is my mother’s place and I have expensive tastes.”

Smart, sexy, beautiful, brave and able to think on the spot of something sure to throw a cop off his game — what more could anyone, even a writer, want in a woman?

All the characters are believable, especially the villains, who range from London gangsters to corporate types. Again, Kirby is able to evoke them clearly in the readers’ minds with a minimum of words.

All the way through (it’s not a long book), Kirby keeps us hooked with tantalizing clues and a style that you just cannot put down.

Double Bind may not be Kirby’s best-known book, but if you want a read that won’t let you go, that tells a good story well and doesn’t waste your time, download Double Bind now.

Hugely Thought-provoking.
I thoroughly enjoyed Seb Kirby’s first thriller ‘TAKE NO MORE’, and eagerly awaited this second book, 'DOUBLE BIND'. However, I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so different in genre, content and writing style. First person, present tense, and this time strongly leaning towards being a psychological, Sci-fi novel, it would not usually be my preferred reading choice. But I still wanted to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did! To my surprise, after only a few chapters I was totally hooked! The skilful way Seb has written this thriller, using such short chapters is a brilliant idea; a sure tactic, to keep you wanting to read on.
The compelling storyline did lose me a wee bit on occasions with some of its intricate, scientific details. Thus I needed to do a ‘double-take’ at times, to identify better with some of the Sci-fi parts of the narrative, and the complex inter-changing characters within the plot; most of which are doppelgangers… or ‘perturbs’, as the narrator calls them.
For me, this was a complete departure from anything I’ve ever read before. I’m still not entirely sure I fully understood the plot, which constantly weaves in and out in a number of baffling and frightening ways.
The storyteller, author Raymond Bridges, struggles much of the time with not knowing who he really is, and thus he ends up questioning the true identity of almost everyone around him, including his girlfriend, Victoria. She and other characters are very skilfully drawn however, and masterfully woven into the plot.
Bridges’ ‘existence’ is indeed an extremely scary dilemma (double bind) in itself, involving startling character-changes, enforced drug injections and electrical shock therapy. The storyline, with its chilling twists and turns, actually quite disturbed me, and I found myself asking a number of questions once the book ended…
Is it possible, I wonder, that such ‘perturbs’ do actually walk amongst us? I mean, who knows who or what is standing next to you at the bus stop or on the Tube? Or indeed, are you really sure you are, who you think you are?? Just as, early in the plot, Bridges discovers, that someone has completely taken over his identity, creating a very destabilising and tremendously menacing atmosphere, in which he has to try to function and survive, in order to tell this terrifying story. Gripping stuff!

If you enjoy a challenging and hugely thought-provoking thriller, then I highly recommend ‘DOUBLE BIND. For me though, it isn’t quite as good as ‘TAKE NO MORE’, but then, this is mostly due to the unfamiliar Sci-fi content. Nonetheless, I’m happy to say this unique book certainly deserves a very worthy 4 stars. Shame I couldn’t give it 4.5. Congratulations, Seb, on another excellent novel!

I can't remember the last time I read a book told in first person present tense. Maybe this is the first because it's certainly unusual enough. First person OR present tense, yes. But both? Kirby certainly set himself a task but I have to say that he was up to the challenge.

Told in very short chapters - there are 100 - it's not a long book, maybe 60,000 words.

In categorising it I would have to slot it under Science Fiction, but it's fairly borderline. There are plenty of Thriller and Suspense elements too. So why SF? Let me give you a taste of the story.

Raymond Bridges has it all. A successful writer living the good life with a gorgeous girlfriend he adores. But only after he's survived finding himself starkers in a shopping mall with no idea who he is and being manhandled off to an insane asylum where he's 'treated' with electric shock therapy or, as he describes it, tortured.

So where does the SF come in? Well, Bridges arrived on Earth on the back of a solar flare on which beings from another planet, destroyed long ago, slip down to earth and take over the bodies and lives of us here on earth. Perturbations, it's called. And what happens to those humans who've been perturbed? They perturb someone else. It's a domino effect, although in the story we only meet the first and second occurrences.

Not having any memory he doesn't know what his mission on Earth is to be, but he's got to survive the torture and the further perturbation into a criminal wanted by the police and find out.

The pace of the story doesn't waver much; the present tense keeps it moving. There's a bit of jumping backwards and forwards as Bridges reveals more about himself and therefore the plot line and if you're not paying attention you can find yourself confused. But nutter or hero I liked Bridges. I also liked his gorgeous girlfriend Victoria. I wanted them to win. I wanted Bridges to succeed in his mission, once he discovers what it is.

An unusual read but a good one.

Seb Kirby has taken a new direction in his second novel. It is at heart a deeply intriguing psychological thriller. I would say it leans a little towards science fiction although it still contains elements of mystery and murder as in Take No More. Imagine not only the sort of identity theft where someone steals your credit card and passwords but where s/he effectively becomes you. The physical resemblance is so close it fools your nearest and dearest. This is not Sci-fi in the tentacled green monsters or whizzy machines sense but it concerns the potential destruction of our planet at our own hands and those who wish to move in and make use of it.

I began by suspecting the narrator, Raymond Bridges, of concocting the story for his own ends but as the book progressed I found him a sympathetic character and was really rooting for him. Had I been a nail-biter I’d have been up to my elbows by about 85%. The chapters are short so it’s tempting just to read another… and another! The book is narrated by a character who is not familiar with the use of the past tense and initially this takes a little getting used to. It doesn’t hinder the flow of the story though and I found it an effective ploy for distancing him from others.

This is a book that hooks you early on and as the plot unfolds, it’s hard to stop reading. An excellent story and really well told.

Having read Author Seb Kirby's first book, "Take No More", I did not expect such a different theme in this suspenseful, fictional novel. "Double Bind" appears to be a supernatural, mystery thriller but I'm not so sure and at the end you might not be either. The whole time I was reading it and...I did read it in its entirety, a movie I saw many years ago kept coming to mind. It is "Twelve Monkeys" starring Bruce Willis. Kirby's novel is equally puzzling, yet intriguing nonetheless, and sure to capture the interest of those looking for something more far fetched to read. This is no ordinary, run-of-the-mill plot.

In Kirby's book, the main character, Raymond Bridges finds himself naked in a shopping mall with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He is taken to a psychiatric hospital and treated with drugs and shock therapy. He tells his story or should I say his 'truth' as he takes the reader on a mind-boggling journey into the future. It's up to the traveller to decide whether the trip is real or not! It certainly will keep you on the edge of your seat as the pieces to the puzzle fall into place, or not.

Seb Kirby is a talented author with a very creative imagination. I look forward to many more future novels to feed my own creative imagination. Kudos to this author for a job well done!!

"Mirror, Mirror, Who Am I?"

This is an amazing, puzzling novel written by Author Seb Kirby. Mark Bellamy believes he is now famous author, Raymond Bridges. Mark appears mad, believing that Raymond is his doppelganger. Meeting in a men's room, it's a scary experience for Raymond, especially when Mark says he is going to kill him. The fact is, Mark is an author who uses the pen name of Raymond Bridges. And it is this new author who has stolen the name of Raymond Bridges. What's weird is, they both look identical. So are they actually twins, or is Raymond really a doppelganger wanting to take over Mark's life? But again, Raymond shifts into a different man, Erin Pasco, and Raymond no longer can recognize himself. This is a truly, original sci-fi mystery that Raymond, if he really exists, must unwind to find out who he really is...Do you think my review is...strange? Yes, it may be, but if you are an avid reader, you will have to read this thriller to the end to find out how this man, who is narrating this story to YOU, unravels this mystery. Hint: He's not from our planet. The author does present this story in a very puzzling manner in the beginning, but at about 25 percent, it starts to become very clear to you. This may be sci-fi, but parts of it you may find comparable to our world today. Well done, Author Seb Kirby.

Having read and enjoyed Mr. Kirby’s first novel, I was fairly certain his second book would be entertaining also. I wasn’t expecting it to be so completely different though. He has created a unique tale of doppelgangers who body snatch earthlings after their own world has been destroyed. It follows one entity’s journey from body to body as he tries to relate his ‘truth’ in order to warn the earth and save it from a hostile takeover.

With twists and turns aplenty, I often found myself confused and compelled to keep reading to figure out what was happening. I was first annoyed that the protagonist told his story in the present tense, but finally figured out it was because he only lived in the ‘here and now’ – and he had difficulty understanding why everyone else lived so much in the past. There are several underlying messages such as this one that will make you ponder your own existence.

An intriguing and creative thriller, Mr Kirby has penned a worthy second book. Fabulous job!

Raymond Bridges is a successful novelist, he lives in a swish penthouse overlooking the Thames and he is in love with the most beautiful woman in the world. In fact, he has the perfect life. Until, that is, his perfect double turns up and accuses him of stealing his identity.

This is a very clever book - Sci-Fi at its very best. Mr Kirby manages to write an extremely complicated plot in a way that is easy to follow. In that respect it reminded me of The Time Traveller’s Wife.
Beautifully-written and with a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat to the last page, this is a superb read.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Original thinking. It took me a while to get into the first person, present tense, but once I did it made sense. The twists and turns keep you thinking and guessing. I really enjoyed it and it kept my interest. Being a fan of London, I enjoyed the subtle references to the city, but it didn't feel it was pushed at you.

Recommended for all sci fi lovers and those that can accept some sci fi in a good action packed thriller.

I borrowed this book from the Kindle library after buying both of Seb Kirby's other two books, Take No More & Regret No More. I loved both of those but have to admit that though this was an interesting idea, I did have quite a time trying to keep up with the story line. It was a good book, thus the 3*, but I probably won't read it again as I know will the other two. If you like SciFi type stories it is worth reading.

I'd give this 3.5 stars if possible. I'm just super stingy with my 4s and 5s. This is one of those books you should just read if the summary grabs you. I almost didn't read it because of some of the poor reviews, I'm so glad I decided to ignore them. Yeah, there are some formatting problems here and there (kindle version) and the first-person present-tense takes a minute to get used to. But the plot is interesting and unique. It's a premise I'll certainly be talking about for a while.

I read this book without really knowing what to expect, nor had I read any reviews before-hand, which I often do before reading books by new authors, whether they be indie or traditional. I found this an interesting and intriguing story, with a good pace throughout.

Double Bind is an easy read, well written with a plot of sufficient complexity to make it engaging without losing track of what was going on. A good read.

Entertaining read

While this book is a wild read, the author starts with a very believable beginning. As the plot and story continues he has you convinced that what follows must also be plausible, although you're logic is in a state of bewilderment. characters are well fleshed out. It's a rollicking enjoyable ride.

I almost gave up on this book because it was terrible; however, I hate to give up on a book. Part 2 was better because it talked about people destroying the planet by making greedy choices, just like we're doing now. The end was unsatisfying. I will say that this author has a great imagination.
