A Beast in Spring

Rate this book
Jonah and his twin brother have abducted 18 newborn boys from unfit mothers. And they've brought these crying imps to a secluded cabin in the woods. Here, they teach the children to respect a vengeful god that lives in the woods, known by Jonah and his followers as The Beast. Here, they learn to farm the land and become men of strength and virtue. Here, there is competition. Here, there is only one survivor. Here, there is blood, grit, chaos, and a band of brothers who are destined to destroy each other before The Beast does.

"Mr. Dimbleby's book will leave readers anxious and shocked. It is a house of horrors, a freak show. And like all good fun park attractions, it is well worth the price of admission.

Eric Dimbleby writes stories concerning the underbelly of humanity and its perpetual misery. And for these crimes against his fellow man, in imagining their ultimate degradation, he has gone missing. Some say that he is “unstuck in time”, while others purport to have spotted him at the edge of a poorly dug grave on the side of a highway to nowhere in particular, takin' care of business.... feeding the worm. Feeding the demon.

Eric Dimbleby has created a very unusual story here, not to mention the most dysfunctional "family" in history. The tale deals with children, but he pulls no punches. Which makes it hard to read at times, I admit. But he is very creative, not only in his tortures, but in his writing. If you have the stomach for it, I recommend reading it.

By way of disclosure, I was one of the editors on this project.
