Sixth-grade Morgan and her classmates are completely unprepared when a guest author--who's friendly with crows and talks like Dracula--volunteers to teach their English class. The kids are justifiably suspicious, and are convinced the woman is a witch. Morgan sets out to expose the author's evil motives, but can she do it before the whole class falls under her spell?
I'm really proud of My Own Magic, and entered it in the 2013 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards. I scored 23/25, so it ranked pretty high. Here's what the contest judge said about it:
"What a delightful book. My Own Magic is for middle readers and the adults encouraging youth to read and write. The author did a fantastic job of mystifying the personhood of the teacher, only to reveal her, and then leave the reader wondering if, in fact, she might be a little magic after all.
"Love the additional back matter, author bio, and sense of enthusiasm for writing NaNoWriMo. Having participated several times, this author is brilliant in her presentation of the event and how youth can participate with teacher support."
-- Judge, Writer’s Digest 21st Annual Self-Published Book Awards
It's pretty awesome to say this, but I know the author. I've written with her a few times and she ended up sending me an autographed copy of this book. Awesomeness. Which the book is as well! It's cute and lyrical, chock full of writing, some suspense, middle-school drama, and just good old-fashioned fun, as well as the creative spirit of NaNoWriMo. To say I loved this book is an understatement. It's a story that both young and old, writer or non-writer, will enjoy.
Terrific writing inspiration for authors of all ages! If you are a writer, aspiring writer, reluctant writer, or proud writer this book is a fun story of encouragement. Share it with the young writers in your life.
A great story. My whole family enjoyed it. I read it aloud to my kids (9 and 12) after my 12 year old son read it and suggested I read it to my 9 year old daughter. Even my husband enjoyed listening as we rode in the car or settled down in the evening. A fun read.
