As the leader of an elite British group that hunts criminals of the magic world, Christian Wetherly comes to the U. S. undercover, posing as a British cop, to investigate a series of murders he suspects have been committed by a dark mage. He never expects, however, to find himself intensely attracted to the American police detective in charge of the case. Christian has long struggled with his hidden desires and hasn't admitted them to anyone. But Alec Anderson stirs something deep within him that's difficult to ignore.

Still...even if he could master his fear of coming out, Christian's dedicated himself to protecting the world from magic terrors. It's a dangerous life an ordinary human could never understand or accept. And to complicate matters, Alec's emotionally vulnerable, still grieving the death of his previous lover, a fellow cop killed in the line of duty. So Christian's determined to keep his true occupation and powers hidden from Alec.

Neither man can deny the powerful chemistry that burns between them, and both realize they're falling hard for one another, yet with so many secrets and complications, a relationship seems impossible.

When the two men become the target of the dark magic, however, and clues about an ancient legacy come to light that indicate Alec may not be exactly what he seems, can they find the strength to tear down all the barriers between them and risk their hearts in order to save each other's lives?

I’m author M.L. Rhodes and I write m/m romance and fantasy. This means my books are about gay or bisexual men meeting, falling in love, and finding happily-ever-afters with other men. Sometimes the settings are contemporary, sometimes the stories take place in worlds filled with dragons, witches, or other fantasy and paranormal creatures. I ask advanced apologies for the number of images but I want to do a very illustrated review

The plot

From countless generations the Ansley family fight against every mage (or greed persons) that desire a very powerful amulet. It's not a source of "white" or "dark" power, but the amulet has a neutral energy, so it's can be used for good, or not. All the book is about a dark magic wizard, called Rogan trying to find this amulet.

Christian Wetherly

The coolest characters of the book!
He is a mage, from the Bureau of Dark Magic Affairs. His interest is to stop Rogan in his madness search of the amulet. In USA some strange murders (involving balls of light and bodies without signs of what cause the death) call his attention so he leave UK... and when I said "leave" I mean teleport!. My nerd brain shout happy reading about teleportation! Soooooo cool!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOVE IT!
Sorry sorry... nerd moment is over... again about the book... Chris can't search in the "ordinary" (word to persons without magic) world without help. As an special agent from the British special task force he can... so he will do it... in USA he will have help from "ordinary" cops.

Alec Anderson
An ordinary cop and a very sad person.
Right away when he will be the narrator (both Alec and Chris are) he will tell you about his personal drama. He lost his partner and is still very miserable when Chris arrive.
No need to tell how much their work together will affect both... very romantic couple, and don't think everything will happen very quickly. There will be a lot of drama and fights... but couldn't be different! Both has issues about have a lover, so will not be easy to any of them.
If I can add the only thing that left me a little bit angry was the constant comparing that Alec do in his mind! Chris and his dead lover... all the time... that annoyed me... but as I said... only a little itsy bitsy... nothing to be very angry about.

Enjoy this magic book!

I loved it, and can't give less than 5 stars!

Little footnote: the mystery of the story is easy to guess... let's see if you (like me) will discover something important before the great mystery is reveled

Re-read Sept 2017 Dropped a star. It wasn't nearly as good as I remember. I shouldn't have read it again. Oh well! Live and learn and forget and learn again!

I'm not normally one for paranormal or magic or sci-fi genres, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and read something a bit different, so I choose Falling after reading Nikyta's glowing review. I'm glad I did because this was fucking awesome!

MC's Chris and Alec were absolutely adorable and romantic and the build up of their passion was breathtaking. I loved the romance in the book, plus the sex was smoking hot! The paranormal story was pretty good too. It held my interest and was easy to follow and the climax was suspenseful and very satisfying.

M.L. Rhodes rocked this one! It's funny, because she has the dubious honor of making my "yuck" one star list with Wanting and my "fuck yeah 5+ stars" list with Out of My Mind. *shurgs*

I'll be looking for more books outside of my comfort zone in the future!

01/18/13: Revised rating after a couple of years of reading m/m: from 4.5 to 3.

Christian and Alec are a wonderful couple and that's what stuck with me after finishing the book. Christian, a powerful mage, is hiding he is gay from friends and family. Alec can't go over the death of his partner and lover. Christian in from England and is paired with Alec to follow an investigation in the US that could have roots in the world of magic.

Alec is very much alone, because he lost his parents and his grandmother when he was very young. He is a very logical man still in mourning. He is compassionate and dedicated to his job. The attraction between Christian and Alec is immediate, even if they don't act on it in the beginning, but there's something that binds them, something that is much more than attraction.

I really liked that they began to explore each other in dreams. What I didn't really like was that they spoke of love so fast. In a way their powerful connection should be enough, given that the setting is fantasy, but I think the author could have played with it a little more, could have created a fact, a sign that they were really meant to be together and that the love words were just right. Like I always say, it's a personal preference.

The world building was good, but if you read this book for the setting, maybe you could be disappointed, because the author doesn't create too much world, if you get what I mean, it was the right amount to weave the plot and keep the reader turning the pages. What stands out in this book is the romance part, that was very sweet and hot and creative.

An almost perfect book, that I think I might even re-read.

Camila about sums it up for this book in her review.. Lol, plus, I just love her pictures. ^_^

What I loved about this book, though, was how nothing was rushed or forced. While Christian and Alec fell for each other quickly and hard, we didn't get bombarded with sex, and in fact, didn't see much of it until a little more than half way through. And that earns major points from me because it gave the story, and the characters, time to develop.

Although we know who the killer is from the start, the mystery is simple and quite interesting. I was hooked from the beginning and found it fascinating to see how Alec slowly comes to terms with what he is, how much power he really has, and the responsibility his family has been given to keep an amulet safe. As far as Christian, he's a simple and lovable character. He's patient and understanding when it comes to Alec's grief of his dead lover. He has some great friends, he's the head of The Bureau of Dark Magic Affairs and he's modest. How can you not like him? Lol

The only reservation I had about this was Drew, Alec's dead lover. At the beginning, I was sad for Alec but as I turned the pages, I got a little annoyed. I understand that people compare their current lover with their ex-lovers but I thought Alec was taking it a bit far when it was always 'Drew this and Drew that' in his mind, especially when he started admitting how much he was falling for, and in love with, Christian.

Still, besides that, I loved the book. I give it a 4.5 rating and definitely recommend it!

As it is often the case with -supernatural- gay-themed romances written by lady-authors this outrageously expensive novel is full of unkept promises.

The idea behind the plot is good: it is not original, but nobody is really that picky about originality in this popular subgenre. In fact I am convinced that most readers just expect an easy, entertaining read that follows a set pattern.
Personally I would happily welcome the output of a great writer trying his/her skills at this genre (M. Schiefelbein comes close to being such) but I am content enough with professionally written fun-stuff.

While Ms Rhodes' writing is not entirely bad, this novel of hers feels entirely off, beginning with the sex, which is extremely graphic but stereostyped and even "technically" wrong.
Beside the sex scenes (which cover many pages) there are a lot of attempts at building sexual tension that result in anticlimatic whinings about unrequited feelings and how the world is such a bad place for gay people to live in.
Many redundant statements and descriptions of states of mind just add to an unappealing picture. Plot, what little there is, is dissatisfying.

This is actually a really sweet supernatural love story about Christian- a mage who is very powerful and the leader of a "bureau of magical affairs" in England. Christian has to travel to the U.S. to help find out why non magic users called "ordinaries" are turning up dead. He goes undercover with the local police to find out more info and possibly help solve the case. He isnt expecting to meet Alec- a police officer who has suffered a loss recently that he is trying to recover from.

The two of them hit it off right away, and while their relationship develops, Christian has to decide if he should tell Alec about his "abilities"... all the while, trying to keep a very dark mage from killing innocent people.

Very sweet love story with some HOT HOT sex! Whew! ;) The plot is exciting and fun, and the romance is sweet and sexy! I really liked this book!

I liked the paranormal aspects & would've liked more depth to that part of the story.

The characters were appealing at 1st, but seemed to get more femme with each page & before long, it felt like I was really reading a m/f story. Just too saccharine.

Also, loses points for the dreaded "undying love @ 1st screw" plot device. (or in this case, BEFORE the 1st screw) You can only suspend disbelief so far. (yes, the magic was easier to swallow than the instant love!)

This story is an adult, m/m romance version of Harry Potter...and the characters line up as follows:
Alec = Harry Potter
Christian = Ginny
Bella = Hermione
Jamie = Ron
Rogan = Voldemort

Which doesn't mean it's not an extremely well-written and beautiful love story. There were scenes that really touched me, the love beteween the main characters develops realistically and you find yourself wishing for them to communicate better and finally realize what they feel for each other. The secondary characters help give depth to the main character's personalities and past experiences. All in all, a great read. There were plenty of threads hanging loose at the end...will have to check and see if the author developed any of them in separate stories.

Needs a sequel. Too many unanswered questions. Obviously not going to happen since it was published 6 years ago. If I knew more was coming, this would be a 4.5 but since the stuff left unanswered isn't a teaser, my rating is lower. I don't see the Harry Potter connection at all. There isn't any school or overseer, the novel spans two continents, there's a mystery with people dying. The tropes of an important and strong bloodline, someone learning about magic after not knowing it his whole life, magic itself, are all standard fantasy fare. More later...

It's definitely worth the time to read it.

This was a cute book, if a little immaturely written.

However, it did have a pet peeve of mine that almost made it a wall-banger. Why, oh WHY do authors take the easy route and instead of creating a real crisis for their characters, make one of them mad at the other for not trusting them. I mean, do you really trust your one night stand, or the person you have only known for two days. I mean, REALLY! Am I supposed to believe that, sympathize with it, or even get invested in a character that could be so absolutely blindly stupid?!

I decided to include one GIF for every dramatic Don't die on me! No! I can't live without you! and Run, save yourself! scene in this book.

There are probably more but I can't count higher than four so four will have to do.

Read this if you love dying angst (while knowing that nobody important will really die because this is a romance novel).

It was barely ok. The whole thing is so ridiculous. There is an instant attraction between MCs. And the moment they give in to each other - there is no end to bed scenes or love exclamations. The rest of the plot is forgotten. Somehow I managed to finish the book. It is nice to know that after all these years I can still surprise myself.
The supporting characters are all sweet to the extreme. If there is a gay heaven - this will be it.
In the beginning the book looked promising. But it all went to hell pretty quickly. Not it's over. Let's move on :-)

As much as I love Christian, the leader if an elite magical group that hunts supernatural bad guys, I love Alec, the man he falls in love with more. Alec doesn't know he's magical but he knows that he finds the man who came from England to assist him in a murder investigation absolutely edible. The sparks fly and along with that there is a mystery and well-meaning friends for the two to deal with. This is one of my favorites that I have read many times. It should not be missed.

Liked this one. Christian is the "mage-in-chief" of a British organization that monitors the world for dark-magic-run-amok. Alec is an American detective who recently lost his lover. A case brings them together, and results in unexpected events and complications. Likable characters, interesting world building. I wish the background on the magic world had been more detailed, but enjoyed the story. Of course, having a HEA made it all work for me.

I think...man, there were parts that I loved and parts that were incredibly eye-roll worthy for me and unfortunately not much in between. It was definitely interesting enough for me to want to finish, I like magic and paranormal stuff and cops and when the best friends are fun and the story isn't so convoluted that you can't figure out what the hell is going on. There were no twists or surprises in here and that was fine.

There was insta-attraction, which, hey happens I guess. I think the dreams (and oh, I did really really like the dreams) were meant to make the connection between the MCs stronger, but honestly there just wasn't enough time and on page interaction for me to really feel it. Maybe it was a magical thing, but it went from insta-attraction, to off the charts lust to *cringe* "love". Again, maybe the magic and the pull was supposed to be a big part of that, I don't know.
I liked the back story with Drew, there were times when I wanted Alec to shut the hell up about him because I felt like he was comparing, but I did understand the guilt and the sadness and all of that. Christian does come across as a guy that isn't just attracted, but he appreciates the qualities in Alec, so that's nice. And both of them are compassionate and sweet.
But it was almost awkward at times maybe. It happened so fast and they love each other and its sex, sex, sex (which admittedly can is realistic for the beginning of a relationship sometimes) but it just didn't seem to fit at points. I mean, if I found out all the stuff Alec just did and was recovering from almost being killed a few times, I might...I don't know, have questions or want to talk or something. The story was cute, the characters were good, the sex (dreams) were hotness (well [SHOW SPOILER] , but it was just a little too fast and a little too awkward.
I would read more from this author though, no question.

I liked the ideas in this book, and the inclusion of magic and mages was a neat touch. (Someone else mentioned this book is like Harry Potter for adults, and that’s a good description.) The MCs had good chemistry, and I appreciated that the conflicts that held them back were realistic. (Alec had his guilt over moving on past his former lover who had died; Christian had his difficulty in dealing with coming out.) Those conflicts as well as the difficulty of coming from two different worlds (magic and “ordinary”) meant that the relationship was a nice slow burn.

Why this was just an okay read for me was that it slowed down at points when there was a lot of expositional dialogue explaining the world-building. This got frustrating, and I started skimming those parts. They would pop back up as different characters explained things (things that seemed obvious to the reader, but not yet to the characters), and I was a little surprised to see that I was at close to 90% done, and people were still explaining things, and the big climax hadn’t happened yet. This meant a pretty fast climatic scene. The ending was good though, but I felt a little too frustrated to really enjoy it.

Your mileage may vary and if you like fantasy in your m/m romance, you may enjoy this book a lot, but for me, the over-exposition, especially in the dialogue, just slowed things down too much.

I liked the story a lot especially the world building and the MCs... I wanted to cuddle Alec ;) Chris an agent of the Bureau of Defence against Dark Mages travels to the US to investigate some murders which he believes are connected to a dangerous dark mage who's trying to get his hands on a magical amulet which will enhance his powers tremendously. In the US Chris works with Alec a human police officer, Alec's still grieving his partner who's been killed almost two years ago. But the two guys fall for each other there're some trust issues, misunderstandings, Chris is not out and Alec has doubt and guilt because of his dead partner but the romance is slowly developing and very sweet. The magical subplot could have been stronger though, the world builing and Chris's colleagues and friends were fab and the things revealed about Alec great... nonetheless I'd love to have more. More of the magic, more magical world, more of how Alec comes to terms with his legacy and newfound power, more how the two guys build a life together.

A sequel would have been fab...

I have to say that I enjoyed Falling more then most of the m/m titles I've read lately despite the issues I had with it. The good points all had to do with the way the story and their relationship was handled. The story wasn't some lame attempt at making it seem like the book had depth, instead you could tell through the reading that the plot and events were given decent attention and strides were made to balance everything so the book wasn't solely a "two guys meet and get together" deal.

I give great credit to how the death of a previous loved one was handled and that Christian and Alec's relationship grew slowly.

There's really only two things that kept me from giving this book a higher rating and those were that Alec's background was easy to determine from the beginning and the ending seemed very rushed when compared to the slow build of everything else in the story.

Overall this is a title I would suggest to others to read.

3.5 stars but I'll round up to 4

The first half of this book is like hanging out with good friends. No pressure, just talking about everything that’s been happening. Some parts are sad, others scary, a few laughs rolled in to ease the tension. Then Alec and Christian get all sexed out and that’s more voyeur than water cooler chitchat. This is mostly a sexy romance, but there is a bad guy who wants to rule the world. I like the mage back-story and how the amulet can increase power. That was well developed. There is little bit of drama when Alec learns of magic and has to decide if he believes. The insta-love feels like a paranormal mate bond, since the guys start dreaming of each other as soon as they meet and it has a fated aspect. The good guys win and get their HEA. All in all an enjoyable read.

I give this book a 3,5 rating. Not that I didn´t love the book and the characters. I just would have liked a little more of everything.

A little more magic and I would have liked to know more about how Alec handles his abilities and how strong they really are. One got to see a little more of Christian´s inner workings and his issues, but I would definitely would have liked to know more about how Alec felt about his newfound background.
I would even have liked to know more about the dark mage and why he was such a crazy bastard.

So, I liked the story and I liked the characters in the book and I really enjoyed reading the story. I just wished there was a little bit more of everything.

This was like reading a grown up version of Harry Potter. Maybe after Harry has ground up. His life has kind of settled. He has a job with the council of darkarts. He continues to live with his friends in an old house. he also is still fighting the nemises that he has always fought.

I really did enjoy the book. I have read all the Harry Potter. I even thought about writing the Harry Potter author and asking her to read the book. Maybe she would like to see what Harry has done with his adult life.

This one was okay. I liked both Christian and Alec. The magic and paranormal aspects were a little underdeveloped but made for an interesting back story nonetheless. There was a little angst (which I like), some steamy, smexy scenes (yum!), and a whole lot of professions of love (a little on the heavy side IMHO). The extended cast of characters (e.g., Bella and Jamie) were likeable enough. But I would have enjoyed learning more about the council and the outcome with Rogan.

Bottom line: a super sweet (LOTS of I-love-you's) and magical m/m tale.

I liked the book quite a lot. There was a real plot, a real character development Sure, the sex was generous but the plot didn't take the backseat to it. It could be possibly used as a first book in a series if the author decides to write more because there were things that could be expanded - like Alec's magical powers - but it can just as well stand alone. There were also only a few typos which is always a plus!

This is one of the few romance novels I've ever read where the plot was a) genuinely interesting, b) didn't exist solely to serve the romance, and c) didn't get in the way of romance. For that alone I'd give it our stars, since the romance it's also incredibly hot it deserves another (I would dock half a star because the dialogue is sometimes (often) incredibly cheesy but goodreads doesn't do half stars and heck, it's a romance novel, cheesy dialogue is sort of expected).

The details are crazy good, it's so emotionally connecting, and the sex scenes are wow. They aren't smutty they are just truely emotionally connecting. It talks less about the hand rubbed here and more about the pounding of the hearts, shaking of the hands, and weakness in the knees. There was no actual mystery to the plot but next to the characters you just don't care. I completely fell in love with them.

One that's been on my TBR forever. I do have to agree this is Urban Fantasy and not Fantasy (though it was on a fantasy list). Really good story that had a predictable plot but interesting characters and side characters. A mage who doesn't know he is one who is hiding a big secret - but with good examination of the mage world (though it could have been much more fleshed out...I still don't know how humans really can't see it because no one was really worried about that).

This is one of those books where the cover and title tells you absolutely nothing about what the story is about. If I had based my wanting to read it on the cover I would've never have picked it up. It was such a good story. I loved that in the beginning it had a mystery sort of theme going on, but later it went on being more about the magician world. It's a definite must read for anyone who likes this theme xD
