Vampire Queen #9

Taken by a Vampire

Rate this book
Joey W. Hill’s Vampire Queen novels keep the pages turning, your imagination running, [and] your dreams carnally vivid” (Bitten by Books). In her newest installment, a servant sentenced to death is sent into hiding and finds a passion she never expected in her new protector…

Groomed from birth to be an Inherited Servant and serve only the most powerful vampire Masters, Alanna never resented her destiny. Then she did the unthinkable: she betrayed her Master to the Vampire Council. Now death is her future, but until her Master is captured, she must be protected. The Vampire Council assigns her to Evan, a vampire whose wandering lifestyle makes him the perfect guardian…

Alanna’s training was for a vampire of power and ambition, not for someone like Evan who lives in mountainside shacks and caves. Even his servant, Niall, is rough mannered. But these two men are about to teach Alanna something her rigorous training never did: how to feel, how to desire …perhaps even how to love.

Then the Council captures her Master, and Alanna has no choice but to accept her destiny. But Evan and Niall are no strangers to defying fate—and they will stop at nothing to make Alanna theirs forever…

This book is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive ($12.85–Grrrrr Penguin Publishing) for a book that was released two years ago. Still, I loved everything about it, especially Chloe and Brendan's wedding scene, which was one of my favoirte parts of the story. I LOVE when authors give their readers a glimpse into the future lives of beloved characters from one of their other series.

Unholy fangs and other bluidy guid thangs! This MM/MFM/MMF/MF is the ninth book in the Vampire Queen series, and the 22nd book I've read by this author. While I've never rated a JH book less than 5 stars, it's easy for me to say this is THE BEST book I've read by her.

More than any other Vampire Queen book, this one dissects the rules and servitude of this vampire world while taking huge breaths to inspire with the most unorthodox and compelling love story in this series. It convinces through the heartwarming interactions of a three-hundred year friendship (Jewish Vamp Evan and his Scottish servant Niall) and an overly-disciplined girl who just wants to love and be loved (InhServ Alanna).

Your face will hurt from smiling. The backs of your eyes will burn with anxious emotion. You'll never want this to end. What the dymanic between the three MC's does is shove you heart first into their teetering--yet simplistic--lives and tangle you so thoroughly, you'll feel you might just die with them. And death is an ever-present threat for this trio, lying in wait, too often kicking your pulse to dangerous levels.

When the sun goes down, JH forces you to look, without ever averting your eyes, at the most perverted of the perverted. You'll find some of the usual kink in this tale, but there's no traumatizing dinner parties. No slurp-slurp-pass-around-the-servant. The sexual audacity is really quite tame...relatively speaking. I would've expected to miss it, but I enjoyed the experience of JH's incredible talent without the shock value. And more importantly, had Evan and Niall embraced the taboo activities commonly found in this series, it would have belied the attitude and orientation of their characters and their story, as they are anomalies in this vampire world. This may be why I found it so easy to relate to and love them.

If you're following this series, you definitely don't want to miss this installment.

This tells the story of Alanna, Evan & Niall & it's fantastic. Period.

Alanna we were introduced to in Vampire Trinity, this picks up a few weeks after she has "betrayed" Lord Stephen. A-hole. He's on the run but still makes time to plunge her into waking nightmares that are slowing driving her insane yet the Vampire Council has decided not to kill her because she is the only link to Stephen but Lord Brian eventually finds a blocking agent. Along the way, someone thought to bring in Evan & Niall to console her which also works remarkably well to break through her nightmares. Evan is a Jewish vampire (I really enjoyed the irony of this) but also an artist & Niall is his 300 yr old servant which, if you're familiar with the series, means he's reaching the end. Something that hasn't been broached up until this point but something I've often wondered about how it would be handled.

Niall by all outward appearances is a dominant but the nature of his relationship with Evan requires his submission although Evan is the only one he submits to-something of a rarity in vampire circles. He's also Scottish so deciphering his brogue is challenging at times. The beautiful & simultaneously tragic thing about their relationship is it's all unspoken need & yearning for something deeper that neither of them is willing to voice until Alanna acts as a bridge between the two-sad it took 300 yrs to happen but it is what it is, I guess. She's strong & brave & self-sacrificing so focused on being an InhServ (inherited servant) that she's divorced herself almost completely from her own desires, wants or needs until Evan & Niall push on those boundaries again & again demanding that she give herself fully to them-heart, soul & mind, warts & all. Naturally, this knocks her off balance & she struggles to obey them which acts like a vicious circle. I respected her when she was introduced & respect & like her even more after reading her story. It's just a lingering feeling & I could be way out in left field but I feel like this story isn't done. It could be but it could not be just as easily, if that makes any sense. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to wait a year plus to find out. :(

Loved it! Truly can't get enough of Joey Hill. She can write like nobody's business, I tell ya. Gideon, Daegan & Anwyn still hold the gold place trophy for me as far as triads go but these 3 are a close second & this one has much more m/m interaction than Gideon's story. AND it's like a Joey Hill reunion! There are people from her Nature of Desire series as well as the regular cast of characters who make appearances in most of the Vampire Queen books. It was fantastic to catch up with Tyler & Marguerite (one of my all time favorite stories) & Chloe & Brendan then she threw in a healthy dose of Gideon & Daegan too! I think I melted at some point reading this. So so good!

10 Stars, if I could give this book 10 stars I would.
Note: My review of taken by a Vampire containers no major spoilers as promised to Ms. Hill.
Taken by a Vampire by Joey W. Hill is the 9th book in the Vampire Queen series. It is the journey of Alanna, a vampire servant trained almost since birth to serve a vampire and her new Master Evan and his servant Niall. Alanna’s rigid and controlled upbringing as an InhServ doesn’t prepare her for service with
Evan who is shall we say a Bohemian Vampire and his 300 year old Scottish servant. The following best describes Alanna. “She was a Vampire’s servant. The sum total of her identity. It was an honor like no other.” “Her training controlled everything. No wasted gestures, such that she had an exceptional stillness to her, almost like a vampire.”
Evan is an artist of some acclaim, painting, photography, sculpture and even doing tattoos. (Marcus from Rough Canvas handles his work.) Niall is described as a bear of a man, tall, well-built, tawny eyes, longish hair and a sexual dominant in his own right, though he is a servant to Niall.
Evan, as an artist seeks what is below the surface into the soul, and Niall want to reach beneath the surface of the perfection of servitude of Alanna to the real woman, one with emotions, feelings, thoughts and ideas of her own.
Now as to what I thought of the book. ABSOLUTELY, AWESOMELY FANTASTIC!!! Sexy hot, emotional (yes, ladies and gents, have a box of tissues handy) a beautiful story. This book of Joey’s will become one of my favorites of hers along with Afterlife, Vampire Instinct and Holding the Cards.
There is so much I would like to expand on but a promise is a promise. But a few minor spoilers:
~The flashback of Evan and Niall’s first kiss.
~Alanna’s run in with a bear.
~Evan’s way of punishing a servant, a cold dip.
~Alanna’s first time at a human wedding
~Seeing Miah and Nerida again.

I think this book has usurped "Beloved Vampire" and "Vampire Trinity" for me, as the most powerful book in the VQ series; at least emotionally.

This story, via wonderful characters of Niall, Evan and Alana, is about coming to terms with who you are and who you are not, what is important and what is not, in the face of all of life's truths including the final truth.

Despite being certain where Ms. Hill was leading me throughout this story and being reluctant to go there, she manages, once again and despite the fictional nature of the tale, to get you to think beyond your normal and even comfortable places, about what is real, and important and ultimately true. She is the Master of this genre for that ability; no doubt in my mind.

Take this journey. Its vintage Joey W. Hill as it applies to the psychological, but with an extra concentration on the heart this time around. Its emotional, often raw, but ultimately worth the trip.

Hint: have chocolate nearby. Seriously...

Blog rating: B-

Alanna is an InhServ, a vampire servant who was chosen from birth to be trained as such. An InhServ is the highest form of servant and they’re normally given to vampires who are on the political power path for the Vampire Council. Her Master, Stephen, was a real ass, to put it frankly. He served on the Council but was very deceitful and Alanna went against all her training and instincts to turn against her Master and turn him in to the Council. There’s now a hunt on to find Stephen, but as Alanna is third marked to him, when he dies so will she and in the meantime, he’s making her life a living hell in her head, messing with her, torturing her, so much so that a vampire scientist has created a blocker for Alanna to take that keeps Stephen out of her head, but it also removes the ability for the Council to track Stephen. The hunt to find him is on and Alanna is placed in protective custody with another vampire and his servant, Evan and Niall. They have a very unique relationship, especially in seeing how the other relationships in this series have gone and they both have protective streaks when it comes to Alanna. The transition for them all isn’t smooth however and with the threat of Alanna’s death hanging over all their heads, they start to form a bond that will be very crushing when Stephen’s death happens.

It made me sad to read about Alanna’s life. She was put into the InhServ program basically from birth and trained to be a servant. That was her only focus in life. Her will, her opinions, everything was stripped out of her and her only purpose comes in serving her Master. She doesn’t know what to do with herself when Evan asks her what she wants. She has no wants, she’s never been able to have them and the transition from going from a Master who didn’t appreciate her to Evan and Niall who both want to love her is a major overload to her system and one that takes a long time to overcome. Evan understands where she’s coming from a little better than Niall does and it leads to the men butting heads, which is a shock all on its own as Niall is Evan’s third marked servant. It felt like they needed to break Alanna down to be able to build her back up and to get her to start using her mind. It’s hard for her though knowing that her time is limited, death hangs over her hand for much of the story and she’s scared to start wanting things only to have them cruelly taken away when she meets Stephen in the afterlife and knows her torture at his hands will continue for eternity.

What stood out most to me was the relationship Evan has with Alanna and Niall. It’s unlike any other in the series so far, and I loved it. Evan isn’t an incredibly dominant vampire, in fact Niall comes across as the dominant in the relationship, especially when it comes to Alanna, and while Evan still commands respect for being their Master, it’s much more subtle. Not present are the huge vampire gatherings where the servants are expected to perform any and all sexual acts that their masters demand. There is one similar scene with a group of D/s humans and Alanna is instructed to pleasure one of the female dominants. Otherwise, it’s a pretty tame book when it comes to the type of sex that’s included, at least it’s tame for this series! There is still plenty of action between Evan, Niall and Alanna but the main focus felt like it centered more on their relationship and how they can make this last beyond Stephen and beyond the milestone that Niall is approaching, 300 years.

A vampire servant’s lifespan is around 300 years and Niall is at that point. He’s showing signs that his death is coming quickly and it adds another emotional layer to the trio’s relationship. Niall wants there to be a way for Evan to third mark Alanna so he’ll have someone when he dies. Alanna wants to be with both men, men who showed her love and appreciation, something’s she never had and Evan wants both his servants to be with him always. A lot of things need to work out right and there is a sweet happy ending, but it’s an emotional ride for everyone to get there.

The reason for my rating being down slightly is the story felt a little bogged down. There are some flashbacks that give us some depth into Evan and Niall’s relationship and while interesting to build their bond, I just found the book very easy to put down. It’s a good, solid story, just not one that had me captivated throughout. But I do appreciate that this story isn’t quite as hardcore as some of the others in this series. Some previous books have scenes that are quite frankly hard to read. Evan, Niall and Alanna’s story felt more real. The bond between Master and servant is there and obvious in some ways but it doesn’t completely control their lives and I really liked seeing their relationship go beyond that distinction and be more about the love they all have for each other.

Alpha males plus submissive females in a menage will always catch my attention. When it's vampires and lowly humans written by Ms. Hill, I'm in! This is a 3.5 star paranormal romance. Alanna is a human raised to be a specific kind of vampire servant. The training is so close to formal protocol in a D/s and SM relationship. This is no surprise as it is Ms. Hill's delicious vampire erotica.

I like when an author uses BDSM themes and doesn't spell it out for a reader. Those who are into kinky books will read this with pleasure. Those who don't know about BDSM and some of the types of protocols may find something which interests them. It may spark that desire to learn more about kink.

With two alpha males, it's a pleasure to see the dominant Evan balance easily between his switch male servant, Niall and his newly submissive Alanna. The back history about Evan and Niall is poignantly sweet. Bringing Alanna into their long established relationship finally completes them. The question is, will Niall remain a switch? *raises eyebrow*

The sex in this story is smoking erotic. Seriously, two alpha males sandwiching an uber-submissive, what more can I ask for? The little bit of BDSM shown in here with a wedding, which crosses another series of Ms. Hill's is so good. Too bad the trio needed to cut out before the night time festivities begun. *pout*

The ending is really not a surprise. Ms. Hill sets it up way from the beginning. The resolutions to the two main conflicts are eagerly anticipated. This is a sweet romance with only a very mild hint of darkness. What is nice about this romance is all the flashbacks to the most memorable memories Evan and Niall share with Alanna. This highlights more bonds between the two mean and brings Alanna into their inner circle. Lovely. *sigh*

It will be interesting to see if this triad appears in any other stories down the line. A reader can only hope. Lastly, for those who are into a big of F/f, there is a very small taste of it in here. mmmm! This book is recommended to vampire lovers who have a penchant for Uber-Doms.

At a Charity Auction in April for the National Autistic Society, I won the bid my choice of any book from Joey W Hill. I chose Taken by a Vampire Ms. Hill sent a copy by email prior to the May 7 release date as well as a signed copy of the book. It was an amazing story of two men taking in a girl whose emotions, and everything that she believed she was now questioning. Where duty was her purpose for living and where love had no practical place in her life. The story tells how Alanna fines that love can be symbiotic with duty. As she struggles with her personal identity. Her protectors Evan and Niall are faced with the reality that their own relationship is dysfunctional. Their love and concern for Alanna subtly changes their own relationship. Alanna's growth throughout the story is the catalyst that glues them into a kaleidoscope masterpiece of a romance of Dominance/submission were a loving relationship flourishes and strengthens, Evan, Niall and Alanna.
It is definitely one of my favorite books by Joey W Hill, and I highly recommend it as a must read.

My least favorite of the series for two reasons. The imagery that I've come to love from Joey W. Hill was missing and of course my hated thing in the book... the annoying , has to be fawned over , needy woman . The only thing that kept me going was me Niall and Evan. There are other ways to show a woman may be in need of love beside the ever constant in a book won't eat, can't make choices, needs constant reassurance woman. Boring.

NO VAMPIRE DINNER?? SAY WHAAAT???? Booooo.

Evan was sort of the back burner which is weird since he was the vampire here. I didn't like him being the weak Jew guy sort of stereo typical. I mean Israel has one of the strongest armies in the world. However I like that he was artsy and the story of him being changed because of that. To see what an artist with immortality could do. Needed more of him : (

Niall amazing. A great story here, a servant dying. The Kilts I loved it love love love. I liked that he was at the forefront of this book. The three together were weak in the sex department. There was just something non Joey W. Hill about it. With the exception of Niall taking Evan.

Daegan and Gideon stole the show along with Lyssa and Jacob. sigh.

I'm not going to even mention the woman's name although I did appreciate the servitude part of her story, wish there was more of it.

Another excellent example of why I can't get enough of Joey W. Hill!

Joey's Vampire Queen series is my all time favorite series and this book did not disappoint! Alanna, Evan, and Niall are absolutely amazing together, the banter, conflict, and heat in this book kept me turning the pages! I didn't want this story to end. If you haven't read any books in this series that's okay, Joey has a way of seamlessly filling in details so you won't be lost. If you have read this series you won't be disappointed.

Alanna makes a fatal mistake in betraying her master, as an Inherited Servant this is the ultimate dishonor but when things on the Vampire council change instead of being shunned she is offered protection, at least until she can help the council find her former master. Evan and Niall aren't generally interested in politics but they both find themselves drawn to Alanna and are all to willing to protect her from not only her former master but also from herself. Alannas struggles with what she's always known and the new feelings she can't comprehend had my heart breaking for her, Evan and Niall help her overcome some of her fears but the biggest fear of all is that when all is said and done Alanna is scheduled to die.

I cannot get enough of Joey's books and if this is your first journey into her world I must warn you... with Joey one book is never enough!

I read anywhere between 400-500 books a year and though my thoughts and opinions vary for each one there are only a handful that make a true impression in my heart that I’ll never forget. This is one of them.

Joey Hill is a Master storyteller. This author’s ability to transport the reader into her written world is a rare gift that keeps me on a constant mission to discover in other author’s.

There have been times when a book has captured my heart and turned me into an emotional mess. One of those times was yesterday as I read Taken by a Vampire. I was a hot mess from the beginning, and I would’ve been able to read it in one sitting had I not needed to stop to take a breath that I had unknowingly neglected to take.

I suck at reviews so I’m not even going to try to give this book poetic justice with my words because I don’t have them. I will say that Taken by a Vampire is now my favorite book within the Vampire Mistress series.

I've stated this before - Hill is the best at writing characters. They are so diverse and beautifully presented. On the surface, you have dominant vampires and their human servants. But it's much more complex than that. Each vampire and each human has his or her own desires and struggles. Each coupling (or tripling) is singular, seductive, and moving. I loved these characters. This book in the series was probably the most emotional for me. It truly is about finding and accepting love. And Hill is able to present it in a completely un-sappy way.

If you haven't tried this series yet and like vampire books, especially ones involving BDSM, I highly recommend you give it a shot. I haven't been let down by Hill yet.

Alana is a third marked vampire servant to Lord Stephan, raised from birth to serve. She reveals his betrayal of the council and suffers from his ability to access her mind trying to drive her to suicide. She is treated with a chemical blocker and put in the care of Evan, a Jewish vampire and Niall, his Scot third marked servant. Their unusual relationship is the perfect answer for Alana's discovery of herself and the three become tied together in every way. Great character development and wonderful humor. Love this series.

Wow...just when I think I have a favorite...another story comes along and changes everything.
Alanna, Evan and Niall's story is a grab ahold and get ready for one hell of a ride. I tried to read it slow but that wasn't possible.
Alanna has such deep, ingrained training that Evan and Niall can't seem to penetrate the things she was trained to believe in.
This was a world building at it's greatest.
The sensuality was off the charts.
No one writes erotica like Ms. Hill...
I love, love, love this book.
HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Wow, a story that made me cry and laugh and root for the main characters the whole time. I will not forget this story :) Great worldbuilding, characterbuilding, I have a weak spot for Niall, and I really believed this threesome, everyone was important. I hope there will be more stories in this series.

So, what I hate about most erotica is it’s mostly wham bam thank you ma’am. This ain’t that. If anything, I took a star because it is unnecessarily wordy. This book had an honest to goodness plot! I will definitely read more of this author and if you like vampire erotica (I like almost all erotica), this would be one you may like.

There was no table clearing :(

Must ponder.....review to come

ok, ok, ok....so there was NO table clearing or vampire dinners that we've come to expect from Joey Hill BUT what we did get was a heartfelt story complete with the damsel in distress and the knights in shining armor.

The story revolves around Evan (a made vampire), Niall (Evan's vampire servant of 300 years) and Alanna (a 3rd marked Inhserve to a powerful vampire and who has a whole dramatic list of issues).

First off, I'll talk about Alanna. This is a woman who was promised to serve a vampire before she was even born. Nothing in her life was her own. Everything she ever thought or felt was to be in the best interest of serving her vampire master. She thought she'd be loved in the process....but in reality she had no voice, had no will of her own. Her story is really quite sad. Evan and Niall can breakthrough her defenses and show her how a master and servant relationship should be (can be). Niall's devotion to his master is complete with sarcasm, banter and wit and it just baffles Alanna that this type of relationship is acceptable.

Niall (what a great, great character!) being 300 years old, is nearing the end of his long life. He becomes smitten with Alanna. I'm not sure if the attraction was initially because of her being the "damsel", or simply that he knew his life was coming to an end and wanted to find someone to be close with. But he and Evan become very protective of Alanna and develop a close bond with her. Knowing their time together could be stopped at literally any moment, they help
Alanna find her voice and find her sass. She sees a closeness with Niall and Evan that they have simply not stated out loud or come to terms with and Alanna is the key to their realization of how much Niall and Evan really do love each other.

Evan is an artist and doesn't realize, until Alanna shows him, that Niall has been his muse for the last 300 years. He isn't ready to lose Niall and finds himself falling for Alanna, too. I wish I could have gotten a little more from Evan...(felt this was more of an Alanna and Niall book)

With all that being said, even tho this may have been the most tame, IMO, of the Vampire Queen series, it was still touching. Joey Hill has the ability to make her dark world quite beautiful and romantic.

From the moment she was born Alanna was to become an Inherited Servant. An honorable destiny and one she excelled at. Until the day she betrayed her vow by turning her Master, made vampire Councilman Stephen, into the Council as a traitor (Vampire Trinity - Vampire Queen, #6). Now the council wants to use her to find her Master and hope they can do it before he destroys her mind body and soul. To that end they send her on the road with made vampire Evan and his servant Niall. Being a servant to Evan is total culture shock to Alanna. She was trained to serve the highest of the high and to make their will her own. Evan and Niall encourage her to think outside her Masters wishes to think of herself and her wishes. A totally foreign concept to her. Alanna knows that when the capture Stephen they will kill him and as his third marked servant she will die with him. But as she gets to know Evan and Niall she is determined to make the most of her time left and she learns that sometimes servitude can be more than duty. Now that she is going to die she is just starting to live.

Once again Joey W. Hill takes us into the world of the Vampire Queen. This story puts you through the ringer. You run the gamut of emotions from despair to ecstasy and all points in between and ask for more. I can’t get enough.

I quite like Joey W. Hill's writing so I read this book - I don't love BDSM etc though, so in this case it balanced out. (Usually the writing well outweighs what I'm not really into, but in this case ... I felt like it was a bit much. Not sure if it was the book or my mood - though the book is quite long.)

Alanna is an interesting character - literally trained to be a sub all her life - and naturally being one too. What is also at issue is that she has "no" personality - it's been trained out of her/subverted? It begins to emerge though and I know a lot of people like the "bratting" aspect.

For Even and Niall ... man. I basically hoped/expected THE WHOLE TIME for what happened to happen but ... I'm still glad it did.
Niall was my favorite, basically. Evan was too like ... "I'm a god."

C or C+ maybe B- if I'm less grumpy

Joey has done it again...
This story was heart warming, erotic to nth degree, and packed with characters that are as real and fleshed out as any I've ever read.
This book had me so turned inside out that I had to stop myself more than once from skipping ahead and reading the last chapter so I could reassure myself that what I was afraid was going to happen doesn't. The suspense was killing me and...I admit it...I was sniffling and cried a little when I got to the part of the book where I was SURE my biggest fear was taking place!
Love Love LOVE this book!

3.5⭐️'s

This is MUCH better than my rating. But a rating is personal, what's a 5 to me may be a 1 to you. It's beautifully written. It's engaging. It's very sexy. But.... I skimmed. Just not my kryptonite, I guess. One thing I do want to note, the menage is very well done. Not a lot of writers can pull it off without someone feeling like a third wheel, and it's usually the female. But not here, you can feel the care they have for one another. Tymber Dalton can do that, too. So I might try another one in this series, but not for a while.

As all Books in the Vampire series, Joey W Hill just keeps bring out the stops, and Taken By a Vampire lived up to expectations.
Ms Hill heightens the suspense and digging deep into her character's souls until we cry, laugh and love with them.
Thanks again Mistress of the Pen

This is more like 3.5. Appealing characters, as Evan is built a bit different than some of the other Vampire characters. Another eventual triad developing.

Choices

This book was great even when it had me worried and almost in tears because it makes you feel. This book hits all the big emotions happiness, passion, sadness, jealousy, anxiety, and even confusion. While it wasn't always blatant the confusion and introspection these characters felt was so relatable and felt so real like you were seeing someone's actual discovery of themselves or where there place is in life or a relationship in a variety of ways. This author does a brilliant job of not only mingling the passion of bdsm with real life situations while keeping the fantasy intact but this series brilliantly weaves in the layer of paranormal and magic that sets it apart from so many other stories out there. All 3 of our characters fought for themselves, each other and their dreams in both big and small ways. Their relationship wasn't always easy or smooth but the best ones never are. Nial was just delicious I mean who doesn't love a good accent or a kilt. While even hotness was a little more hidden but quick to catch fire once you saw it. And Alanna was kind of like a bridge or medium to really complete the circuit and make everything flow. These characters were written so well with a natural flow and chemistry, where each one had something to balance another. And the ending was perfect an HEA that left me wanting more even if it's just glimpses of them in future books but still satisfied with where they were. If you are just getting into books with bdsm or want your kink with A side of paranormal you absolutely can not go wrong with anything by this author. This book was also filled with many choices and seeing how those choices could affect others but also understanding that a choice in the end is singular in a lot of ways even if it causes a ripple effect. And you can't truly force someone to choose a certain way that choice has to be made freely. This was a beautiful tale of struggle and love and so much more and I would absolutely recommend giving it a read.

This is such a different story from the earlier Vampire Queen stories. It is intriguing how laid back these two men are. Evan is so absorbed in his art. He is very absorbed with how everything can be become a painting or sculpture. I am surprised that he volunteered to mark Alanna. He doesn't seem the type.

Niall is also a surprise as a servant. I understand that there is a debt that needed to be paid and the fact that he was grieving the loss of his family but he is himself an alpha male. It is an interesting dynamic. Into to this mix is a Inherited Servant. She has been trained from a young age to be whatever a vampire wants or needs. When her master Stephen, tries to eliminate the council and fails he goes on the run leaving her behind. The vampire isn't done with her and torments her endlessly through the master/servant link. This is how the two men come into her life.

It is interesting to see the relationship unfold between the three individuals. Both men have little to do with society as a whole. They have more or less traveled the world finding places that interest Evan artist senses. Alanna is lost without the structure that has been so much a part of her life. She is drawn to the men but it isn't sure why. Mainly because she has no experience with the outside world.

Alanna world has always been very structed and regimented. She has never been given the chance to make her own choices. So being a servant to Niall and Evan expands Alanna's view of the world. She sees and feels what it is to be a servant of a vampire that values what she was trained to be and what more she can become. it is a rollercoaster ride of emotion throughout the stories. However the last few chapters will make you cry from all the emotion and changes in the lives of the three. Ms Hill never fails to deliver a wonderful story full of emotion and heart.
