Amelia Riding--young, vibrant, haughty, and known throughout the land for her pampered wealth as well as her lush beauty--holds the captivation and adoration of all.
But there is one man who wants nothing to do with her: Tim Woodman. Coarse, crude, a recluse by nature, Tim is a hard man with an iron will, and he uses that will to dominate and command those around him. He has no interest dealing with a haughty, insolent brat of a girl like Amelia Riding.
Until one night, Tim Woodman saves Amelia’s life--and uncovers her strong, but buried, submissive nature. Tim will need all his patience and skill if he is to lay her submissive spirit bare. To do that, he must first tame Miss Riding’s unruly ways.
So begins their dark and sordid relationship as Master and Pet.
Tim has a lot to learn his new pet: the true power of her submission, the dark ecstasy of obedience and surrender.
But winter is harsh in their cold and bleak land, and predators lurk in every shadow. For some, Amelia’s hot-blooded body and ethereal beauty would be the sweetest prey of all…
Warning: Contains graphic sex, BDSM, anal sex, and heavy submission.
I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and submissive. My husband is my Dom of over eighteen years. We have a CPE (complete power exchange) relationship dynamic.
Some people call me a smart-assed masochist, but that's not exactly true. I'm not a masochist: I don't enjoy pain. What I like is that fact that I don't like pain. I suffer for those whom I love.
I am a huge fan of Doctor Who. I crochet, but I don't knit. I cut coupons. I'm horrible at math. I have a functional addiction to twitter and Fetlife. I'm honest, but I can be coy if I'm trying to flirt. I hate my nose. I like the color of my eyes. I can be a brat…and I take a good punishment for it.

You know those books that you start reading and you're thinking, what the hell, but it starts to get a little better with each chapter, I felt this was this kind of book. I started getting more into the story once Tim and Amelia's interaction began. In the beginning, we get to view Amelia in her surroundings. At first, I didn't care for this, however, it became clear what the author was doing to show Amelia as disobedient and spoiled.
Tying in a red riding hood concept was nice. I think it gave the story a bit more interest for me. Once Tim and Ameila's characters started to interact, it definitely became intense with master and submissive. Tim opens Amelia's eye to this BDSM world that confused her but yet excites her. Their form of BDSM took on the do as I say when your told, punishments along with sexual rewards. To let the reader know, some scenes between Tim and Amelia became or could get intense to hardcore. It did get a bit bloody at times along with a few anal and very graphic scenes. Apart from their intense BDSM, both characters became deeply involve with each other. I like that both characters were not all as they seemed. Even though I figured out who Tim really was earlier on, it was still interesting. While that is taking place, Amelia is dealing with an unwanted groom to be and family secrets. So, there is other story lines that will keep the reader engage.
Other than a few buts for me that comes from personal taste, there isn't any complaints on my end. The one thing I will say is that once Tim and Amelia became physically intimate for the first time, thereafter, the author told us of some of their physical acts and what and where they did it. I wanted more details on some of those encounters. Nevertheless, we did experience more from them but I think some of the ones mentioned seems like it could have been epic scenes in the book.
I loved Shelby's play on the Red Riding Hood Story, still set in yesteryear but before the present knowledge and use of Safewords and rules or guidelines. Showing how BDSM play has always been around for some and nature of masochist and sadists wil out when given the chance to complement each other.
Amelia's awakening to Tim was so erotic. The BDSM play and sexual awakening a real turn on. The commitment she gives him in the end just right and his marking and claiming her an unusual format for blood play that seemed right in the context of this story but I would have baulked at in real life. This also gave me reason to add the story to unusual implements as carving your symbol in your partner to declare ownership and love doesn't happen to all every day.
The father, so weak, so pathetic and yet he supposedly loved Amelia and trying to do what he thought best with a well off good looking man for an arranged marriage...but the mother I could initially have slapped, but then how knowing the facts can alter your perception!
The slime ball of a fiancé gave me the creeps and his end as would have happened in times long gone where fairy tales were first started was rough, but I loved the justice, as opposed to nowadays and t'would have police and CSI over it all looking sceptically at events and after someone to blame.
The end is as all fairy tales a coming together, baddy gets his and heroes get theirs and all comes good in the end.
There's an occasional typo. I have looked at it in terms of 4/5 star border but opt for five to show as it is a BDSM erotic retold fairy tale unusual and works but retains the elements of the original story, wolves included.
I never read any of Shelby Cross' books and saw this was a BDSM fairy-tale and thought how hot will this be and decided to give it a go. At first, I started out thinking Amelia was an innocent young lady not knowing that she was just a spoiled brat that was never taught to behave properly until she met Tim, who taught her quite a few things about herself, a little too much for my taste. I liked the story except for the harsh and bloody moments, which was a little hardcore for me but I guess some people are into that, and left me thinking WTH. The couple did compliment each other. As I continue to read, the characters became so intense with each other that I wondered when the ax was going to come down. I knew who Tim was from Amelia's description of the conversation between Tim and her father and also what really happened in Tim's wife too. When the ending was near I couldn't believe the eye opener that came. Everyone was not who they seemed to portray themselves to be, beginning with Amelia, who was introduced to her BDSM nature down to the lies of others. The erotic twist that came with fairy-tale of Red Riding Hood was a good at times except those moments where things became a little rough for me and had to take a break until I could come back and finish with a happy ending.
Admittedly, Shelby is one of my favorite authors, however this was the first full length novel of hers which I have read. I loved that the additional length allowed the characters to develop further and become more deeply entwined within each other's lives as the novel progressed.
The story itself was enticing and a fantastic erotic twist upon Red Riding Hood without feeling forced to follow the fairytale. It covered various elements of BDSM including Domination, submission, bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism, subspace, pain play, servitude, humiliation and more.
Despite being an obvious BDSM novel, my very vanilla friend has also read the book and very much enjoyed it, Shelby's style of education through her writing allowing even the most novice / vanilla reader to enjoy and appreciate this book.
It always surprises me when an author can take a story and totally tweak it and make it new and unique. While this was short (it didn't need to be longer than it was) it still held my interest and was very well fleshed out. If you like BDSM books you might consider giving this a go for a cheapie and a shortie it was well worth it. Now will it ever be on the NY Times Best…probably not but entreating for a smut read nonetheless.
I enjoyed this short 200 page story. At first I was like..... WTF? Where is this going but quickly liked the characters. Only one scene in the book with a heavy domestic BDSM situation that almost made me put the book down and hope she left the master woodcutter and never looked back. The scene was too cruel in my opinion so readers be warned. Other than that I was happy with the ending.
That was so romantic! I loved it. Such escapism. I adored the description of the dynamic and of submission specifically, I felt it captured the drive to submit beautifully.
It also led me to think a lot about my submission; where I could do better, let go more, embrace it more. And yet is was still a total fantasy, a world to lose myself in for a little while.
I loved this book. It's my first by Shelby Cross and it wont be my last. It combined so many of my favorite elements. Fairytale, bdsm, historical, HEA. Even though its short at 200 pages the story is not rushed in any way. The interactions are able to develop in a realistic manner. Everything is resolved in a fitting way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested.
Well it was good for how short it was, and very well written. I have not read anything from Shelby Cross before and I may give her another go.
Some of the scenes in the book kind-of had me saying. "Wow this guy isn't a good dom." He lies to her a few times which a Dom should not do ever. The aftercare after certain heavy scenes is practically nonexistent, and he punishes her when he screws up. Trademarks of an inexperienced or just plain bad Dom. Then I realized that it's set during some time and place that didn't have clubs or Fetlife or education so I forgave it for the most part. One thing that did bother me is that she didn't have a safeword or anything to get him to stop. Several times he just lays into her and she has absolutely no defense. I just think in this story were she's really a big time masochist and unaware about practically anything sexual safewords would be the way to go. But I digress.
The story arc was engaging and interesting for such a short book. The descriptions were rich, which set up the characters and the fantasy nicely. I like the "wolf" in the story, and the fateful interaction with him in the grandmothers house. It was well done.
Will I read it again. Probably not, since knife-play and severe beatings are not my thing. Blood, ick. But it was an interesting retelling.
This is the BEST BDSM fiction book I have read ALL year. I read it on holiday during the summer and I could not put it down. I found myself longing to be Amelia Riding.
The descriptions where beautiful, the characters were full, believable and honest and most of all the BDSM relationship and the way it was played out between the two main characters was utterly believable. Non of this utter nonsense about BDSM schools or Masters in grand castles with naked slaves etc but just two people discovering each other and their D/s selves.
I loves that Amelia was feisty and strong and bloody mad at being spanked the first time and yet, just like me, utterly turned on. Her journey to accepting her submissive nature felt so real and true to me and the man who shows her the way was also brilliantly drawn by Shelby's words.
The branding scene haunts me.... Damn you Shelby, do I really want that for myself?
If you read just one erotic/BDSM book this year then I suggest you make it this one.
Oh I should mention I have one small criticism, it was too short and I felt the ending was ever so slightly rushed. It is not really a criticism so much a sadness I guess. I wanted more.
I was curious to find out how Cross would 'twist' the original "Red Riding Hood" tale.
So...we meet Amelia Riding, who's spoiled and headstrong. She's intrigued by Tim Woodman, a local recluse who lives near her grandmother's house. On a visit to her grandmother's, on a whim, she stops by Tim's cottage and.....oh my!! How deliciously kinky!
It goes from kinky to very intense, and bumped up hard against my discomfort zone during a couple of Tim's punishments. Seriously, if I'd been Amelia, I'd have been outta there!
I'm not sure I ever really got to know either Amelia or Tim very well. We see Amelia being drawn into to Tim's kinky and seductive web, and we see Tim gradually falling for Amelia, but I never felt like I knew why they felt and acted as they did.
Cross does a nice job of pushing the action along with the creepy fiance and the wolves!
It's a solid 3 1/2 stars, and I might revisit this to bump it up to 4.
I really liked this book, it was nothing like I expected, and for the better!
We are set sometime back, and it isn't really clear where, but, we have a definite hierarchy and our heroine comes from the town's elite. Young, and still single, she has been entranced by the town, seemingly, woodsman.
This and that happen, and she ends up spending lot of time with him, even though she has recently been betrothed to the son of the towns wealthiest man. There is something off with her fiance but nobody seems to catch it but her. She continues to get closer to her woodsman and there is some really, really, hot stuff between them
Everything implodes, as one would expect, but she still ends up where she wants to be. It was quite a ride to get to the end, and it stays true to the fairytale, with a few liberties to stay on track
Overall, this was an amazing adaptation, and is bang on with it's story and the BDSM elements it incorporates.
This was my first time reading a book by Shelby and I was very impressed, like her smutty storytelling.
I however would have given it more stars if there had been more angst in the story (what can I say I'm a glutton for punishment).
Although this was a short book I felt that it didn't need to be longer it was just perfect the way it was. Love the whole unique twist on kinky fairytales at the moment.
This is the second time I've read this now. And had to change my start rating from a 4 to a 5! The only thing negative I can say is that there were a couple of spell check mistakes from Tim to time. Also the story line was predictable. How ever that did not take away from this delicious story at all. I loved that it was a story of 24/7 complete power control. It was spanking good & yet so loving and tender. Extremely well written also. So happy ire-read this again
It's almost winter and the wolves are getting braver coming back to the forest. But they aren't the only one's you have to watch out for.
Off to Grandmamma's house Red realizes that stopping to watch Tim Woodman chopping wood probably isn't the best or brightest thing she does. But he's just so.... easy to watch. Red's father decides it's time for her to be married. Will the willful Red stand up to her father? Or will she bend to his wishes and marry the most eligible man in town?
The red riding hood concept grabbed my attention. I was excited about the book before I even read the blurb. I mean who doesn't love a big bad sexy wolf?
I was actually surprised by the intense level of BDSM. I was kind of expecting a more vanilla level of BDSM (no idea why I just was lol). I did find myself wanting a few scenes in the book flushed out more.
Very original and fun take on Little Red Ridinghood!
I picked up this book up as part of a challenge. I am so glad I did as I would have otherwise missed an enjoyable read. A very clever reconstruction of the original 'Little Red Riding Hood' told amidst an historical setting. Goes to show you don't need all the whizz bang equipment available nowadays for a very effective bdsm scene!
I really enjoy fairy tale re-tellings and this one was great. The story was good and conflicts were just right. Meaning --- not too angsty and the characters were true and none were TSTL. Which happens alot in these type of stories.
To me the story was a mix of domestic discipline and dominance.
The story followed the traditional red riding hood closely enough without taking it step by step. It worked for the story as it established a connection between Amelia (Red) and Tim Woodsman.
It was pretty enjoyable to read; however, the amount of misspellings, grammatical screwups, & syntax errors was atrocious. Why can't people proofread their work before sending it to print?!
