Catherine Converse is an independent author living with her husband and four children in beautiful Montana. She studied Business at Carroll College in Helena, Montana and Marketing Communications at West Virginia University. Her love of writing took off in her years working as a marketing consultant using creative writing to sell. Now she uses it to take readers on an adventure. The In Between series is her first journey into the world of publishing.
I didn't like this book at all. It seems that I've always been able to find some redeeming quality in any book that I read. In that spirit, I finished this one, but it was painful. To start with, the main character fell in love with the guy pretty much instantly; the author expects the reader to buy into this when there's really no journey there. I mean, she meets him, then she loves him.
The whole premise of the book is that 18-year-old Adie has dreams that are premonitions of the future. Understandably this ability is driving her a little crazy, especially reading about the incidents a few days later in the newspaper & wondering if she could've stopped these crimes. Then, voila, Jeff, who's been posing as a student teacher in her class, reveals himself as a recruiter for this company that's funded by the government to utilize these Visionaries' dreams to be able to intervene before these crimes happen.
So, at this point I'm thinking that although this is completely fantastical, that's what I love about many of the books that I read. I was still intrigued, but keep in mind I was only a few chapters in. From very early on, the book plummets downhill. I can't say that the author isn't detailed in her descriptions, but it seems like her details are used on the wrong things, like the scenery in the wilderness of this underground world in which this agency resides. I really needed more details about these pre-cognitive abilities & how they worked, I needed to be convinced to care about these characters...and I wasn't.
Adie's friendship with Dannika is another example of the non-existent relationship building in this book. One minute they're saying "nice to meet you" (and honestly, Dannika doesn't even really like Adie at first; she feels threatened by her) and only a few details and events later they're the best of besties.
The plot becomes completely convoluted, there are secondary characters that I felt were so irrelevant that there was no real need to even introduce them to the story. There was the plot and there were a couple of additional sub-plots that she attempts to intertwine with the main plot until it turns into a confusing mess.
Even after the book's climax when everything is supposed to start falling into place (maybe not completely & that's ok too!), I had difficulty deciphering who the bad guys were versus the good guys. It was just frustrating. I'm all for solving puzzles along with twists and turns in a novel, but these were just so pointless, I didn't even care if I ever knew what happened at the end. But, for some reason I just kept plowing through, I HAD to finish, lol, don't know what that's about!
And lastly, I'm all for cool character names, but there's such a thing as trying TOO hard. This was waaaaay over the top. Just sayin'. Anyway, I'm no book critic, that's for sure; and I've never said anything so absolutely negative about anything that I've read before, I feel kind of gross doing it actually! But I also need to be honest if I'm going to share my reading experiences with anyone. Otherwise, the fantastic "reviews" that I give won't hold as much weight, at least I don't believe they will. :)
“The In Between” (Book One of The In Between Series) By: Catherine Converse was truly an ‘edge of your seat’ kind of read that I could not get enough of. When I heard about this book, I was very captivated by the storyline and cover alone.
Basically, there are two girls with very opposite pasts who join a secret intelligence agency, which happens to be located deep underground. As if that wasn’t intriguing enough, we learn that the girls use their psychic dreams to prevent murders. I knew I had to get my hands on “The In Between” because it sounded so fresh and new; “The In Between” is unlike any book out there right now that I have read.
The two girls, Adie and Dannika, form a ‘unique’ friendship and begin dreaming about the same murder case. The girls soon learn that they do not know the whole story behind their new employment; the very agency they work for may not be what it seems. After an escape attempt by the less than stable Dannika, a secret department is stumbled upon and the girls now fear for their lives.
The suspense and crystal clear character descriptions kept me reading this book until all hours of the night. The descriptions overall in this book are just outstanding. Converse has a talent for writing suspense, and some pretty vivid descriptions that suck you right into the book. Without giving anything else away I will just say that I am anxiously awaiting the second installment of “The In Between Series”, “Fade to Silver” (to be released very soon).

Wow! The In Between is a one stop shop for excitement, intrigue, a little romance and paranormal.
Adie is a senior in high school who has vivid dreams. Dreams that are bad premonitions that she can't control. She is given the chance of a lifetime to help those she dreams of. She meets Dannika, a girl her total opposite, but share the same dreams. Dannika has demons of her own to face.
Follow along with Adie, Dannika and a few others as they journey to stop a sequence of dreams from becoming reality.
Catherine Converse has become one of my Top 10 Authors of all time! Her creativeness with characters and story lines is unbelievable. The In Between is a first for me as far as reading about dreams becoming reality and I am so glad that it was Catherine's story =)
I am uber excited to continue with this series! Kudos Catherine on such an awesome start to an awesome series!!!
Her idea was fascinating, but her execution was flawed. Think rough draft with incomplete sentences, grammatical errors, inconsistency, too much telling with not enough showing, forced romance that doesn't feel real, and technology that doesn't even pretend to make sense. Who stores frozen brain parts in a vault under a bank? Was it refrigerated? Who would kick a bomb? One minute Adie decides she might be able to find someone who isn't Jeff and "ta da", the next page brings Witt to dinner and she falls for him. What is an "impire?" I have too many questions that weren't adequately explained.
Soccer star Adie has dreams. Not the fluffy bunny kind of dream, oh no. She dreams of murders over and over. Being haunted by the victims' eyes would be bad enough - but then Adie realizes the murders are actually happening in real life. She ignores them as best she can, not knowing what she can do to stop them. When she's approached by her teacher's assistant, Jeff, she finds out that there is an entire organization devoted to taking these psychic dreamers and using them to stop the murders before they happen.
This is such an interesting premise. It's action-packed and fun, mixing technology and the supernatural. I'm looking forward to the next in this series.
This book was simply FANTASTIC!!!!! Words can't express how much I enjoyed this book. The fact that it was unique and original gave it huge bonus points from me. I haven't read another book like it so I was immediately captivated after the very first page. I was shocked at how quickly it reeled me in. The story was full of mystery, adventure, romance and had a lot of action. There were so many twists and turns in this book that I was shocked and surprised so many times. It kept me on the edge on my seat the entire time. The story was beautifully written. I really felt everything the characters felt. Catherine did a great job with this book!!!
Adie's nightmares are death. She sees a murder before it happens, but she doesn't do anything about it. She is scared and common sense tells her, no one would believe.her. She goes to school and plays soccer. She is so good that she is getting a scholarship for it. One day, she falls asleep in glass and sees the death the captain. She ignores the paper,s news, everything for two weeks hoping not to see or hear anything about it. Jeff has been watching her for a while to see if she was ready. He recruits people like her. When he takes her to the IPA, her whole life changes. She finally accepts that maybe she can do something about these murders. Adie's partner Dannika is considered strange and different, but a strong bond forms between these two girls. They start having nightmares about the same case which shocks everyone. While trying to solve this case, Adie and Dannika start realizing that the agency has secrets. Someone is leaking information and betraying all of them. Will these two girls be able to solve the serial case and find out who is betraying them? What new secrets will Adie find out about her dreams? You all will have to read the book to find out.
Character development is really important to me in stories. I love being able to watch characters grow and become stronger. Catherine did a great job with this aspect of the book. Adie completely changed by the end of the story. I loved how she finally took charge and put her two cents in. They even wanted her opinion. I loved all the characters in this book. Well, the good guys anyway. Each of them really grew on me. Characters are what make a story magical and fun to read. I was able to relate to the characters in this story.
I loved Adie. She was a great heroine. Finally seeing her accomplish what she was suppose to accomplish with her dreams was awesome. She learns a lot about herself as the story goes on. She even realizes that her dreams may be different. I loved her relationship with Jeff. Even though they were not aloud to be together, there were a few sweet kisses her and there. I loved watching their relationship grow throughout the book. Adie has some type of feelings for Witt though. I haven't figured out what yet. That my turn into a love triangle in the next book. Who could not love Bain. I would marry that man in a heart beat. I loved seeing a strong, muscular man's soft side. Dannika was a fun character. No one understood her but Adie. That is why they grew so close together and and became best friends. I adored their friendship.
The ending was a shocker!!! I so did not want that to happen. But like everyone said, this might be Dannika's right path. Talk about a huge cliffhanger. It sure left me wanting more. I can't wait to read the sequel, Fade to Silver!!!! I need this book NOW!!!! I recommend this book to everyone who wants a GREAT book to read!!!

I had the opportunity to do an author spotlight on Catherine Converse and her YA paranormal novels The In Between and Fade To Silver, a few months ago on my blog. As I read the material for my spotlight, the concept of the book intrigued me and I put her book in my TBR pile. I got the book in January and read it in a couple of weeks. Here are my thoughts about it!
The In Between introduces us to Adie, a high school senior with a promising future in soccer - who just happens to have the extraordinary gift of dreaming about murders before they happen. She is recruited by an organization - the IPA - to become a Visionary and have her dreams interpreted and acted upon to prevent the murders.
As Adie settles into her new life - deep underground in IPA’s headquarters - she is paired with another Visionary named Dannika. Together, the two slowly forge a bond and work together to help prevent more killings. The focus of their work becomes a shadowy figure who seems to anticipate their intervention in his plans and who threatens their lives. That is as far as I will go describing the story so I won’t spoil it!
I found the story to be new and refreshing. The characters grew throughout the book and I did like the way Catherine gave them more personality as the story progressed. The introduction of romantic interests adds a dimension, but there were some awkward moments with them such as the first meeting between Jeff (the IPA recruiter) and Adie. Nonetheless, the relationships evolve and become an integral part of the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed The In Between and I bought the second book in the series, Fade To Silver (which I am reading now). Bravo to Catherine Converse! My rating: 4.5 Stars!!! (I wish GR would allow half-stars).
“The In Between” (Book One of The In Between Series) By: Catherine Converse
Kismet's Review:
The In Between cover leaves you in complete suspense and wonder; you asked yourself, what this book is about? Once I started to read this book I truly couldn't put it down. Converse's ability to bring a refreshing take on suspense in the Young Adult Market allows you fully appreciate her skills to describe and build the correct amount of anticipation.
About the Book: Imagine that you realize that your dreams are actual psychic dreams. Imagine that the nightmares you experience and the horrific scenes you witness could be prevented? Adie realizes long ago that her dreams are in fact actual events but feels helpless that she can't do anything about it. She tries to live her life like any other graduating Senior but when she realizes that someone she knows has been watching her every move, what will she do?
Adie learns about a secret intelligence agency located deep beneath the surface of a busy city, and they need her! Her dreams are the keys will give them the ability to possibly stop a murder from happening. She meets a fellow Psychic Dreamer name Dannika but realizes quickly that Dannika is an obstacle herself. They form a bond allowing Dannika to respect Adie but she discovers something and Adie needs to help her while they are trying to catch a serial killer.
What did they discover? Did they catch the Killer? You just have to read it to find out!
I give this book 4 Stars! Kudos Catherine on a well written book!

This was one of those books that I wasn't really sure what to expect when I began reading it. I was worried that the whole secret intelligence agency hidden from regular society theme would be a bit too "over-done" or too much like other books, but I am a reader and therefore I will read anything and everything at least once! That being said, I am so very glad I read this one. It was a brilliant story and it was not over-done at all and it was not at all like any other book or story out there! Kudos to the author for creating a very unique, intriguing, well developed, fascinating, and just plain fun book.
This book took a lot of time on character development so you really get to know each and every character very well and by the end you are extremely well acquainted with the important ones. You also are familiar with the agency and other such areas. I had to stop myself there because I almost found myself giving some information away that I shouldn't! I must be careful here so I won't say too much more about the story as it's very involved and to say one thing could quickly lead into another that could possibly lead into me giving things away I shouldn't! I'll just say that the author did a great job of having one thing lead to another and to say too much about any of it would ruin the surprises so perhaps it should just be read to find out.
All in all, this was a fun read and I am very much looking forward to reading the next one in this series. This book is definitely worth taking the time to read!
Adie Brighton is a college-bound soccer star who dreams of murders before they happen and has since childhood, although she's never told anyone. Her life begins to change when she's recruited to be a visionary for a secret underground intelligence agency. Now she actually has a chance of stopping the murders before they happen with the help of her troubled partner Dannika, her new love interest Jeff, and a team of dedicated IPA agents.
But anything is possible in a world where dreams reveal murders before they happen, and Adie and Dannika soon find themselves in danger. Can they stop the perpetrators before it's too late, or will they become the next victims?
THE IN BETWEEN is a YA crime/sci fi thriller recommended for ages 13 and up. Even though it's a little out of the scope of what I normally read and review, I enjoyed it, especially the character of Dannika who is as complex and interesting as they come. It's truly unlike anything I've ever read before, although I would say that if you enjoyed the movie Inception or are a fan of crime TV shows then you will like THE IN BETWEEN.
The In Between, by Catherine Converse, is a fast-paced read that offers intrigue, excitement and romance. The main character Adie is immediately likable and a character that readers will easily relate to. Adie is a fascinating young adult, who has had psychic dreams from a young age. When she is offered the chance of working for an underground intelligence agency, to use her dreams for good, she boldly agrees.
It is once she recognises the potential of her ‘gift’ and realises how important it is to the world, that Adie’s life really changes. With the development of a tentative relationship with both Dannika and a dreamy love interest, Adie takes the reader on a thrilling journey of nail biting tension and a captivating mystery, all in the name of catching the bad guy.
The concept for The In Between’s plot is creative. The plot structure is well developed with numerous plot twists and the characters develop in interesting ways.
The In Between is an action packed fantasy YA read suitable for sci-fi, fantasy and romance lovers. A very enjoyable 4 fluttering fairies!
Disclosure: The In Between was received for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Adie Brighton is a teen, getting ready to graduate high school. She's also a psychic, has been since eighth grade, but she hides her fantastic ability, afraid of how people will treat her. She feels like a coward, but she lacks the courage to do anything. Adie takes a leap of faith and dives into a new future. Catherine Converse has created a young adult series that draws the reader into the action from the very first word. Adie's concerns, her commitment are evident from how much she cares about all those around her. The person reading this series, especially the first book, The In Between, is compelled to keep turning the page, to read on without a break, to discover if Adie can help with her visions. Converse has created a well-crafted world that appears normal on the surface, yet is anything but. Adie is very believable as a young woman focused on a future she wants, but then is drawn into a group where she stands out because of what she has hidden. I highly recommend this book for all young adult readers with a taste for adventure.
I really like the idea of this book but it wasn't executed well at all. I needed more descriptions of the science behind the characters being able to enter dreams and change things. Don't just say "well it happens!" because that doesn't cut it for me. Figure out how you want them to accomplish this in your world and then tell me about it.
There was too much telling rather than just showing so I felt like I was getting hit over the head with the details. Perhaps don't continually tell me what color clothes the characters are wearing. I don't care.
The "romance" in the book...good lord. It just happened. Poof! They're in love! Sigh. Give me something better than that because that never occurs in real life. I wanted more story on how Jeff and Adie fell in love but instead I got instantaneous lovey-dovey crap.
I was looking forward to this book based solely on the description of it, but the actual execution of it was flawed and disappointing.
This was a little veer off my usual reading genres, however the synopsis got me interested and after I got through the 1st Chapter, I was pulled in and read every spare time I had, very difficult time put down. It's not just from the story's plot, but from the Dynamics of each character, whom are believable and genuine. The two heroines; Addie & Dannika develop an intimate friendship - closer than with Dannika's twin. Their personal struggles drives them closer, which turns out to be an asset, as well as, possibly put them in grave dangers. This is an awesome story; thriller, paranormal, romance, covert ops & great characters dynamics.
'Catherine Converse' has now been entered into my "Authors to watch", as I look forward to the next installment of this great series and perhaps her other stories. ♥ ~Blessed Be
This book is utterly amazing. I was totally lost in the story and by the time I finished, it was 2:30 am! Catherine did an amazing job mixing the paranormal with the criminal in this action packed story. Adie is an amazing character who is very easy to relate to. Throughout the entire book you find yourself rooting for this heroine and hanging on to every word of her self-discovery. I love the fact that Catherine hinted at certain things during the story but wouldn’t give you a straight answer until the very end. As if this story could get any better, Catherine put a teaser from the second book in the series at the end and all I can say is OMG! You do not know what you are missing and I highly suggest everyone find out soon. This story is not only for a YA audience but an adult audience as well who loves twisted tales of deceit and criminal mischief.
5 out of 5 stars Let’s start off with this word “FREAKINFFANTABULOUSLYAMAZING” I don’t feel that totally says it about it, I couldn’t come up with a better word, not that that is a word haha. I loved this book, words can’t describe my amazement towards it. I loved the storyline, it automatically peaked my interest. It took me awhile to get the concepts but once those hit me I was thinking to myself “This is amazing, how did she come up with an idea like this?” Another one was “What if this is possible?” I would honestly be terrified out of my wits, but hey it would do a whole bunch of good in the world! I want to let you all know I one hundred and ten percent recommend this book to any person, young old, genre loving people, you won’t regret this book!
The story was very entertaining and I would be interested in reading the next book. What bothered me were the development of the relationships and assumed knowledge. Adie suddenly is best friends with Dannika although the development of their relationship was very short and insignificant. This made me care less about situations throughout the book when either girl was worried about the other. There were also a lot of instances where it seemed the author assumed we knew certain information that would be critical for the situation, when, in fact, we didn't know. This made things confusing at times. Overall though I did enjoy the book. I loved the dreams and the communication with Ops to stop the bad guys.
I would have loved to give this book four or even five stars and I would have been able to if the author had just hired an editor. I loved the story - fantastic paranormal romance. If you can dream about murders before they happen, can you stop them? And if so, who would be interested in harnessing those powers? Adie (Is that supposed to be Addie?) is recruited by the super secret intelligence agency - the IPA - Impire Peace Agency. What is Impire anyway? Is it a misspelling of the word Empire? If so, it is one of many misspelled words in the book along with grammatical errors and jumps in time and missing information. The book is captivating and thrilling with plot twists and paranormal abilities and romance and danger and intrigue, but it really, really, really needs editing.
I just loved this book! First, it is an entirely new concept to the paranormal world, for myself anyway. I loved the main character in the story, and her growth throughout the story was remarkable. She takes things in stride and isn't afraid to voice her opinion when she feels warranted. She is independent in so many different ways.
The only thing that I found disappointing is that we didn't get to learn more about her partner. However, I have already read the second book in the series to write up my review, and a little more is brought to life there. This series is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone, teens and adults alike. It is very easy to relate to the characters and the story is just wonderful.
I liked this book and its premise. My cousins sister-in-law wrote it so I decided to check it out. I liked the characters, the plot, the relationships. I liked the twist with Addie's dreams and her relationship with annika. Others have said the relationships should have been more fully developed instead of the reader having to assume so much about them. I agree with that a little, but I also see how talking every night and sharing secrets could result in a great friendship. I remember the quick feelings of young love, quick to offer the heart... So none of that really bothered me at all.
All in all I enjoyed the book and will read the next one when it comes out. As a new author, she has such great potential and did a great job with her first book.
I started this thinking it was a different book due to a file mix-up. I was stuck with it for a few hours offline before I realized the mistake. First, I totally lost respect for the 17 year old heroine when she goes off into the woods with this older man she barely knows in chapter 2. Then he takes her to a secret agency that is 20 miles underground. 20 miles? And, no, not just a bunker or something... it's a whole underground community with elaborate furnishings and a large population. And they go horseback riding. Underground. Right. Aside from how ridiculous the story was getting, it was full of editing errors. Bailed at 27%, but should have bailed when I saw "sneak peak" (sic) in chapter 1.
Two stars means "it was okay" and that's how I feel about it. I did think the teen romance stuff added a fun element, but I couldn't get into it. The world she made is neat-o and all, but maybe I didn't like it since it didn't follow any set rules? It was like fantasy but set in our time, so instead of magic and dragons, she has dreams and animal/human brain interface neurotechnology. She never explains why the main character was even chosen for her role in the agency--I thought she might at the end as a teaser for the next book or something. If the girl has these prophetic dreams, and she gets recruited, how did they know about her to recruit her. I don't mean to bag too hard on this book, I think lots of people would like it. Maybe more of a teen audience?
Nicely written, cool premise! There were some spots that moved a little slow for my tastes, but still a pretty good book. I was also able to predict some of the ways things went, which was a little disappointing to me! I've read in other reviews that the end just blindsided people, but I saw it coming from a mile away! Oh well! A fun read that leaves me excited for the next in the series!
Being a single mom of two that works full time, 6 days a week, lets just say I don't get to read a lot. Once I purchased this book on my Kindle, I could not put it down! There are three book series that I HAVE completed and I rank this book up there with them. Harry Potter, The Twilight Series, and Hunger Games. I think that's enough said... Can NOT wait until the next one is out!! Come on "Fade to Silver"!
The In Between offers adventure, mystery and romance, all in on book! I loved reading a book that is suitable for both young readers and adults, similar to other series like The Hunger Games and The Twilight Series. The characters in this book are easily relatable, yet their adventures are unforgettable and full of supsense. I can't wait to see what adventures lie in the sequel. A must read!!
I thought I had reviewed this book months ago! Oh well...
Surprisingly enough, this was a very enjoyable read. This series is aimed at young adults but the book reads like a "regular" one. The characters are young but the plot is strong and the idea behind quite original. The book is very fast paced and fun to read. Very enjoyable!
This is a really good story filled with adventure, mystery, drama and love. The author's imagination gave life to the story. For instance, a couple of times I felt like I was in the portals with the lions and able to touch them. What I enjoyed most was Addie's ability to dream in real-time. This fascinated me.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The story is well written, and the characters are likeable. I've started reading the next book in the series (the teaser was at the end of my ebook), so I'm looking forward to finishing that in the near future as well.
