This book challenged just about every single one of my preconceptions about what I prefer to read and reminds me that I don't know ANY of what I think I know, especially when it comes to the craft of writing. I've been dancing around Delaney Diamond's work for months. I'd heard great things, but hadn't taken the time to dive in because I thought she only wrote romantic suspense (preconception #1) and also thought that some of her books were shorter than I like to read (preconception #2) so might be long on plot but short on character development (preconception #3). WRONG. WRONG. AND WRONG.
Her writing in this book has both depth and breadth. The page count is immaterial because she managed to give you rich, lush detail about the characters, the setting (Brazil), and the emotions at work. She created both an emotional and physical landscape that I could see and feel, and she did it with remarkable economy. No extra verbiage, just relevant detail. Others have recounted the plot so I won't do that here except to say that I felt the characters' love, longing, loss, passion and pain. And the sense of place she portrayed with remarkable skill as well. How many times have you read a book where the writer tells you it's set in, say, Italy, but they may as well be in Skokie, Illinois for all the description they give you about the location?
And to do the book justice, I have to point out that if you want a lot of "plot" in your romances, some mystery or intrigue, this book has that as well, but not at the expense of the development of the characters. Once in awhile you run across romantic suspense where lots of sh** happens but you have no idea why the hero and heroine like each other, much less love each other. And when they fall into the sack, you're like, 'wait, what?!'
That is most decidedly not the case here.
Delaney Diamond does what I wish more writers would do - she sprinkles seemingly minor details into the story that add dimension to the characters' relationship, like this: "He'd tossed his suit jacket haphazardly on a chair near the bed. She always used to get on him about leaving his clothes lying around like that. . . [I]t only took a few more steps to put them in the right place, but he never seemed to get that far. She missed giving him a hard time and having him call her a nagging wife. Then she'd tell him he was spoiled, and he'd grumble that if he were really spoiled he'd be able to do whatever he wanted in his own home." That's the kind of thing that makes characters live and breathe for a reader, and there was just enough of it in this book to make me feel Sabrina's sense of loss when she feared her marriage had been damaged beyond repair.
If you have the same "book prejudice" problems I have had, please read 'Second Chances'. It'll make you a believer. Now, I'm off to buy The Arrangement!!!
This was a great follow up to The Ultimate Merger. Sabrina and Renaldo, whew they were on fire! After the last book I thought these two were impenetrable but boy was I mistaken. The fights between these two will have you shivering in your boots. They had such passion behind their words whether loving or hating one another, and sometimes it was almost scary. Renaldo was a mean SOB at times, but an awesome lover as well. The sex scenes between these two will certainly have you fanning yourself. I haven't read all the books in this series, but after reading these two it makes me want to go back and revisit the earlier books. Well done Delaney Diamond!
Yep, not really a fan of this book. Besides the extended family dynamics, there didn't really feel like their was a true connection between the H & h. It was all hot emotions, no slow burning seduction and definitely no real fight to keep the love of your life.
It glorified the female character way too much. She played the helpless victim and believed things could get better if she ran. Then Mr dark & brooding has to come in, sweep her off her feet and play happy-reluctant-protector, again.
As for the male - too much 'I am big man, you are wet woman' for me to like him. And believe me, I got serious droolage for Alpha men.
But in all fairness, I get edgy reading books that start with marital affairs. So from the offset my view was thoroughly coloured. Don't take this as a personal attack on this writers choice. In fact I congratulate any author that starts off like this. But I'm a firm believer that there has to be a degree of maturity when moving through the story. There were parts where I caught glimpses of it, which saved me from DNF-ing this read. But not enough to earn this particular book more than a 2 star.
This was the follow up of Renaldo and Sabrina's story "The Ultimate Merger" here that story ended as a happily ever after or so we believed.
Book 2 opened up with such a bang (and not in a good way) that I couldn't catch my breath. I was screaming "What Just Happened Here" the story begins with Renaldo believing Sabrina cheated on him, now I didn't believe it till the scene panned to him holding the pictures of a very Naked Sabrina and the man in the photo name was Mateo. From that scene my whole world went black, I'm scrambling trying to figure out how could this be Sabrina when she loves Renaldo so much. And then the scene that devastated me after reading how Sabrina was trying to explain, Renaldo picks her up and forces her out of their home. I don't know who was more broken over that scene...Renaldo, Sabrina or Myself.
Just from what I have written will definitely let you know that this book was completely well done. Every emotion that the author wanted to bring out of the reader she has accomplished it and then some. Renaldo was a man completely broken, Sabrina was a woman completely broken so how do you go about fixing it? Is it salvageable? Is it worth fighting for? All of your questions and then some will be thoroughly answered.
Every little nuance that is often missing from stories was well captured in this book and that believe it or not is the reality of real life.
I can't say anymore at this point but this, these two fought hard against each other, those around them and their inner demons. Reconciliation, Forgiveness and Love conquers all darkness is what will save Renaldo and Sabrina da Silva.
How could Renaldo throw Sabrina out without giving her a chance to explain what happened at the club? Why did Sabrina keep meeting up with the drug addict, who was black-mailing her behind Renaldo's back?
There are so many twists and turns, which makes this such a great read!
I love when Love wins at the end but trust me they went through a lot for their Happily ever after plus She even made me mad a couple of times I wanted to stop reading the book lol Wonderful book and on to the next one and Happy reading
I loved the follow up story between Renaldo and Sabrina. It begins with the wedding and everything is going well until Renny discovers proof of his wife's infidelity. Renny was understandably hurt, betrayed and angry. Being a latin alpha male didn't help. He set out to hurt Sabrina as much as he believed she hurt him.
Poor Sabrina is confused. There's no way she could have willing cheated on the man of her dreams. She tried to take care of it so he would never find out, however as fate would have it he does. She is dazed, confused, disappointed and hurt, however she was a woman about and tried to endure his venom. She still doesn't understand how something like this could have happened, however she's willing to do almost anything for a second chance, which Renny is not inclined to give.
The bombshell drops!! Who would have thunk it! Who would have ever imagine who set out to destroy her life and happiness. I know a was caught with my mouth hanging open. I loved it and felt it was a definite page turner. Great follow up!! Yep I recommend it.

If your like me, you love the stories Delaney Diamond tells. The heart, the emotion, the attention to details... and let's not forget about the passion! I've had the opportunity to read several of her stories as well as meet her in person, and I have to say, Delaney is really cool people!
I got hooked on the free short story snippets she shared on her blog a few months ago that lead up to SECOND CHANCES, called The Ultimate Merger. There we were introduced to Sabrina, a hard working black woman whose achievements was never fully appreciated in the company she worked for, and Renaldo, an equally hard working Latin hottie who knows how to get what he wants, in work, and in private. The two of them meet, sparks fly, and an affair begins. Just as it seems its nearly over, secrets come out, are overcome and a happily ever after begins...
Or so we thought.
Now, I don't know about you, but when Delaney dropped the preview chapter of Second Chances, I was shocked and the nosy side of me had to know what in the world led Sabrina to give up everything she'd gotten when she married Renaldo: love, passion, security, respect, and appreciation in both her personal life as well as her career. I was not disappointed. The way things ended up happening left me speechless.
There were times when Renaldo rubbed me the wrong way with his reactions, but it was understood because of his upbringing, character, and how passionate he was about his feelings (not talking about the bedroom stuff here). I appreciated the fact Sabrina started finally accepting the things about him and his family and being willing to change in order to save her marriage.
I recently finished this book and l was left completely satisfied. I have read from this author before and it seems like she is improving with every new release. There is a balance between great storyline and great storytelling. The events in the book take place roughly one year after the events in Ultimate Merger. Renaldo and Sabrina’s idyllic union is on the rocks due to an indiscretion on our heroine’s part. A night at the club with her friend ended up in an adulterous one night stand. When her husband discovers the truth, she vows that she loves him and has never wanted another man but him. Such statements contradict her suspicious behavior towards Renaldo. To him, it is an “unforgivable sin”, so his reaction is to immediately kick her out. Unfortunately, Renaldo has to call back his traitorous wife in order to close a business deal. They will have to feign an idyllic marriage in order to retain a profitable business deal with the mayor. In exchange for an appropriate and believable behavior, Sabrina will be rewarded with 6 million and a divorce.
Sabrina will of course use this as an occasion to prove that she is trustworthy and still loves her husband. Although he still harbors feeling for her too, he categorically refuses to hear her justifications and reassurance of her love. He basically lashes out on her during a good chunk of the book…Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for Sabrina? Fortunately, some external events enabled both characters to reexamine their feelings towards each other as well as their faults. Some very strong character traits may have pulled them apart; and of course they needed to communicate more. Each catalytic moment enables both Sabrina and Renaldo to realize that they could open up gradually to each other and make it work. We also learn that our hero’s past is not as perfect as it seems and that some past tragedy may have molded his views on Sabrina’s failing. Both characters have some deep rooted issues that influenced some of their behavior and it is nice to see them letting go of their past for the sake of their love. *Sigh* I feel really strongly about adultery and didn't think I would take this book well, but is showed me that love is greater than the "unforgivable".
I appreciated the effort form the author to incorporate some old acquaintances. It was made in an organic way and satisfied my curiosity. It was such a pleasure read about alexia and Leo again. I love them to bits and it’s good to see that their marriage is still strong. And I was happy to see what Jewel was up to lol(trouble of course!!). I like how Renaldo's family played a small role in rekindling our main character’s love, which is nice.
It seems like the author did some research about Brazil to make her story more authentic and interesting. She didn’t go overboard with the details, (I didn’t feel like I was reading a travel guide) but it was just enough for the reader to absorb the general atmosphere of the country; it sure piqued my curiosity. As mentioned before, I really enjoy her writing style, because she didn’t have to tell me much for me to know what the protagonists were feeling. Some passages really stood out to me such as the family reunion/birthday and that’s where I can tell she puts time and effort to her craft. Thank you Delany for that great read!!
WOW...AWESOME follow-up to the short teaser The Ultimate Merger...sorry it took me so long to get to it...Renny and Sabrina's tale was SWEET and SEXY....but then it took a HORRIBLE turn after they were wed...I was so sad at the unfortunate turn of events that took place in their whirlwind romance. Poor Renny...couldn't wait to see if he would get past the ultimate betrayal of his wife or if Sabrina could convince him to forgive her...I was TOTALLY caught up in their INTENSE drama...and it was nice catching up w/Leo and Alexa. Worth the wait!
Renaldo & Sabrina had a beautiful life, they got married not too long after they met, they love each other, so why wait … so when something unthinkable happened , that even Sabrina couldn’t explain , herself , Renaldo couldn’t forgive her , but she is an integral part of a major project in his company… He threw her out of their house, now what!?
I did suspect what happened, because things didn’t add up… I don’t want to leave any spoilers so you will have to read it and find out.
I really didn’t want to like the heroine in this book. When I read the blurb and found out that Sabrina cheats on her husband, I almost didn’t buy her book. The only reason I bought it was because I love the authors work and I couldn’t see her letting it stand that way. I am so glad I didn’t listen to my initial thoughts. I loved this book. This couple overcame so much.
I felt really bad for poor Sabrina for the majority of "Second Chances." She was so guilt ridden for what she thought she'd done to destroy her marriage. Renaldo didn't make it any better, treating her like DIRT, mostly because he was angry with himself for still wanting Sabrina, and how dare she give to another man what belonged to him!!! Then throw Jewel into the mix. Let's just say my suspicions were correct about her all along! Excellent read!
STORYLINE: A year has passed since Sabrina and Renaldo met in The Ultimate Merger and married each other. One night Sabrina goes out and the unthinkable happens, but like the old saying goes—things aren’t always what they seem. Renaldo cuts Sabrina out of his life, but needs her help to cement a business deal, and Sabrina uses this chance to prove her love to her hubby and try to get back in his good books.
PLAYERS: Sabrina da Silva is a workaholic, who is devoted to her spouse and has helped him expand his business since their marriage.
Renaldo da Silva is hot, passionate and stubbornly refuses to believe that there may be extenuating circumstances surrounding Sabrina’s gaffe.
I liked the passion that’s evident when Sabrina and Renaldo are together or think about each other. The glimpse into Brazilian culture and lifestyle (particularly family values) is enlightening and enhances the storyline.
I could have lived without the angst that the couple faces early in the book. Of course, they had a year of happiness, but I felt for both Sabrina and Renaldo as each of them dealt with the damage to their relationship. I do, however, understand and appreciate that this is how the romance is supposed to go.
Second Chances was like meeting old friends. It’s a quick read that pulled me along for the ride and kept me interested. I wanted to see things work out for two ambitious people who clearly love each other. There is a twist at the end, which keeps things realistic—the plotline would have felt too perfect without someone in the story having feet of clay.
If you’re a romance junkie, and like intense sex scenes, you’ll enjoy Second Chances.
Betrayal, the unforgivable, love, and sexy scenes!
I enjoyed Ultimate Merger novella and was thrilled to know there was more to Renny and Sabrina's love story. I was blow away by how amazing this story was. There was the shocking 'betrayal' by Sabrina, the unwillingness of Renny to forgive, the secret revealed about his past, and a marriage being tested. This story takes place in Brazil, Renny's home country, far from Chicago, where Sabrina, lives. I loved the exotic locale and thought that it added to the story.
I felt for Sabrina, her goodness and her love for Renny, despite what happened. I also felt bad for Renny. What a tough position to be in. Their love always shone through. The family aspect added to my enjoyment. Family can be a good thing or a burden.
When the final surprise is revealed, I was shocked. This story worked for me on the suspense level. Then there were those wonderful sexy scenes with Sabrina and Renny! This story worked as an erotic romance as well.
Loved this follow up story between Renaldo and Sabrina. They truly loved each other but when evil deeds get in the way, their trust and love takes a back seat. Sabrina's love of family unknowingly put her in a hurtful place with her husband. Renaldo's childhood pain didn't allow him to give his wife a chance to explain or consider her doubts about that night, so he was quite mean to Sabrina. Secrets played a big part in their hurt, but true love had a strong hold on their hearts, so I am glad the truth was revealed about the whole Mateo drama, and that Sabrina never cheated. Happy that Renaldo and his sisters will get to build a relationship with their mother. Renaldo and Sabrina truly are a Dynamic Duo.
5.00 stars. This is an excellent story, well written with great character development and a storyline that moves along and maintains the interest of the reader, it has mystery with Sabrina and Renaldo having a great romance with steamy love scenes. Renaldo and Sabrina de Silva have their marriage threatened when Sabrina's cousin sets her up and leaves Renaldo thinking his wife has been unfaithful. Because they were in the middle of a business deal, he moves Sabrina back into their home, while there, they uncover the cousin's betrayal and they rekindle their love and maintain their marriage.
Wow! Second Chances did not disappoint. It wasn't what I expected but what I expected. Feel me? Anywho, it was a great read. What Jewel did to Sabrina was way beyond low after the way Sabrina helped her out. But all in all I was happy that Sabrina and Renaldo got their happy ending after all they've been through. At times I wanted to punch Renaldo for the way he spoke to Sabrina but I know he was hurt. That arrogant bastard lol. Hot Latin Men. Renaldo was definitely yummy.
The author did her thing again! I read the"Ultimate Merger" and I would not have guessed the ending. "Renaldo" could be an AZZ when trying to hurt Sabrina as his hurt . The author always manages to paint a picture that I can visually see the movie in my mind's eye. I like the reconnection with the birth mother. As always, the author has entertained and amazed me.
Terrible how family can almost ruin your life! Jewel and Sabrina are cousins who are like sisters. They had a rough upbringing but stood by each other. When Sabrina meets Renaldo and gets married, it should have been her happily ever after…. She thinks she cheated, her husband can’t stand her , but her needs her to close a deal. Can they work it out or is she doomed to walk out of his life for good ? Loved the story, great plot twists.
This was really good! I am glad that Renaldo and Sabrina got their HEA even though Sabrina was getting on my nerves by not telling Renaldo what happened to her. Even when he found out, she still kept trying to handle Mateo on her own. I was not surprised with the actual set up and who was responsible that was revealed at the ending. I also knew that the first book with Leonardo and Alexa would also be connected and that Leonardo is Renaldo's cousin. Good story!
Sabrina and Renaldo....another good love story with a little twist. Did she or didn't she sleep with Mateo? Renaldo certainly thinks so as soon as he sees the pictures she was foolish enough to leave at home. Still, they love each other but he forcefully puts her out of their home. She's a fighter though and has no intention of giving up and is determined to make him understand her side of the story.
